City Elections Update Your Vote, Your Voice On November 7, 2023, Gallup voters will decide if the Mayor and City Council should have the authority to move Gallup’s Municipal Election date to the Regular Local Election date in November in odd-numbered years. If voters approve the measure, the City Council will decide whether the election of Council members and the Municipal Judge should remain in March of even-numbered years, or move to November in odd-numbered years.

Background Gallup is a “home rule” city, meaning it has a founding Charter and does not depend on the State of New Mexico for its existence and authority. The Charter is similar to the U.S. Constitution, it sets the basic rules by which the City is governed. One such set of rules are those governing the City’s elections. In 2018, New Mexico adopted a statute, known as the Local Election Act, allowing cities to “opt in” to the regular general election held in November of odd-numbered years. In order for Gallup to “opt in” to the regular November election, it is necessary to amend the Charter’s requirement of a March election.

The ballot measure does that by giving the City Council the authority to move the City’s election to the November date.

One Election Date The City is asking voters to make this decision for a number of reasons, including: - Having municipal elections on the same day and ballot as other general local elections will increase voter turnout and participation by making voting more convenient and simpler.

- A substantial cost savings (approximately $40,000.00 every two years) will be realized if all local elections are held on a single day. The ballot for the November, 2023 elections will include a Yes or No question for the “Authority to Opt In.” If voters reject the ballot question, City elections will continue to be held in March of even-numbered years. Gallup’s TradePort plan inches forward

lans for a Gallup TradePort are progressing with a pending application for a User Fee Airport and Foreign Trade Zone, which might also eventually lead to expanded passenger service.

Interim City Manager JM DeYoung said the application process is expected to take several months.

“My guess is that there will

be some back and forth as we go through the process, especially with regards to our terminal design and some things we might need to do to accommodate new services out of our airport,” he said.

City leaders envision a bustling trade port that would link the city’s road and rail transport assets with air freight to help local businesses save time and money.

import and hold raw materials duty-free, and export fi nished products to other countries with reduced duties. That can reduce the time it takes local businesses to get imported supplies because they would bypass Customs inspections at overloaded coastal ports by shifting inspections to the local zone.

The city started the process last November, when the council approved applying to the New Mexico Department of Transportation for money to plan the project. The hope is that a trade port will serve local businesses and attract new manufacturing and warehouse operations to McKinley County.

To keep the plan moving, the city council has approved a contract with law fi rm Miller & Co. to submit an application to Customs and Border Patrol to provide supervision for the User Fee Airport and Foreign Trade Zone. Part of the initial process included a local canvass to see what businesses might benefit from a Foreign Trade Zone. “ T hey d id n’t f i nd a ny that met the need initially.

However, there have been discussions recently with companies potentially coming to town that could qualify for

Interim City Manager JM DeYoung trade zone services,” DeYoung said.

A Foreig n T rade Zone requ i res a Un ited St ates Customs and Border Protection agent on site, which comes with a five-year commitment and $200,000-per-year price tag to pay for the agent in Gallup, since the nearest one now is in Albuquerque.

That money would likely come either from businesses that take advantage of the Foreign Trade Zone or a New Mexico Department of Transportation grant.

Meanwhile, the state has extended the grant that helps the city have Advanced Air passenger f lights between

Ga l lup a nd Pho en i x for another two years, so those f lights should be available into 2026, DeYoung said, and Advanced is looking for ways to expand Gallup service, possibly to other destinations.

The next step toward a Foreign Trade Zone is a related program called a User Fee Airport. The UFA would not only open the possibility of a Foreign Trade Zone; it would let air carriers offer passenger fl ights into and out of Gallup from Canada and Mexico.

“The UFA and that designation also allows planes to arrive from a foreign country directly to your community and clear Customs there at the airport with the CBP officer,” attorney Bryan Brown told the council when they initially considered the idea. “Likewise, it allows planes to leave for foreign countries such as Mexico directly from the airport with customs review of the release of the airplane and the passengers to fly to Mexico or to Canada.”

State marshals investigating Gamerco blaze Staff Reports

T

he New Mexico Fire Marshals are investigating a structure fire that occurred in Gamerco around 4:30 am Oct. 21.

In an interview with the Sun, McKinley County Sheriff Ja me s Ma ior a no I I I sa id his deputies and the Gallup Fire Department were dispatched to 400 Ray St. in the

early morning hours. Metro Dispatch had received multiple calls of a large fi re and possible explosions in the area. A shed in the resident’s backyard had caught fi re.

The fi re spread to the porch at the back of the house, and was climbing onto the roof.

The homeowner wasn’t home at the time, so MCSO deputies had to notify them of the situation.

Three people were believed to have been at the residence when the fi re started. Two of them have been identified, but at 4 pm MCSO deputies were still trying to find the third person.

No deaths related to the fi re were reported.

Mariano said the situation has not been ruled an arson case.

He also said the house was heavily cluttered with trash, which made it difficult to determine where the fire star ted. There were many fl ammable materials spread throughout the yard.

U.S. Highway 491 crash leads to two deaths Staff Reports

T

he New Mexico State Police are investigating a car accident that killed two people around 6 pm Oct. 19 on U.S. Highway 491 in McKinley County.

The initial investigation

indicated a white Dodge pickup truck, driven by Charles Lane, 64, of Aztec, New Mexico, was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 491, near milepost 34.

For unknown reasons, Lane’s vehicle left the roadway and crashed into the rear of a commercial motor vehicle that was

parked on the shoulder due to mechanical issues.

There was a two-year-old passenger in the pickup truck, who sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene of the accident. Lane was transported to a hospital in Albuquerque, where he later died due to his

injuries.

The two people who were in the commercial motor vehicle did not have any injuries.

According to the NMSP

press release published Oct. 21, alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the accident.

The NMSP are investigating the incident.

tate Police will be conducting sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and registration, insurance, and

driver’s license checkpoints in all of New Mexico in November.

This is done in an effort to reduce impaired driving and change society’s attitude about driving while under the

influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.

Hundreds of lives could be saved each year if every driver made the right decision not to drive impaired.

Luján, Blackburn introduce resolution to support global nuclear safety Staff Reports

ASHINGTON D.C. — U.S. Senators Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M., and Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., introduced a bipartisan resolution in support of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s role promoting nuclear security Oct. 26. This resolution reaffirms U.S. interest in preventing the spread of nuclear weapons, securing nuclear materials, and ensuring that the IAEA has the resources to successfully carry out its duties. It also upholds IAEA’s position as an indispensable organization for strengthening nuclear security and facilitating

U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján access to applications of nuclear technology.

U.S. Representative Bill Foster, D-Ill., has introduced a companion resolution in the

U.S. House of Representatives.

The IAEA serves as the world’s central independent intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the nuclear field, and pursues the “safe, secure and peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.” Founded in 1957, IAEA is tasked with verifying that states comply with their commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and other non-proliferation agreements.

Bigfoot…real or fake?

NAVAJO NATION RESIDENTS CLAIM TO HAVE SEEN THE CREATURE

It may be grainy, but some people believe this is a photo of Bigfoot. There are hundreds, even thousands, of people who claim to have seen the strange creature in North America.

n November of 2020, 58-year-old Emerson Jim of Window Rock, Arizona, set out to hew down some trees in preparation for winter. Mapping out his route, he and other family members set out past Saint Michaels heading to the Summit. With the cold season coming up, Jim wanted to gather as much firewood as he could in hopes of not having to make the tedious trip again. Little did he know that this trip would cease any future firewood gathering in this area for him, as he believes he had an encounter with Bigfoot.

Bigfoot is said to be a large and mysterious creature that inhabits the wild forest areas of North America. Bigfoot is also known as Sasquatch.

Most people who believe in Bigfoot’s existence, or claim to have seen one, describe a figure covered in long strands of hair that have an apelike feature and stand up to eight feet tall. Some claim the creatures are shy, which makes them elusive.

Jim said he’ll never forget the obnoxious stench and howlish scream he heard that day.

“I thought maybe an animal had died in the area and was beginning to rot, but the odor was overpowering,” Jim said.

"My family and I kept moving further into the grove of trees to select some good pine to cut down when we heard this howling noise. We stopped dead in our tracks and just froze.”

Place softened butter, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl; beat together with an eclectic mixer until smooth.

Gradually add flour, baking powder, and salt, continually beating until combined, refrigerate dough for 20 to 30 minutes.

2. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Lightly grease baking sheet.

3. Remove dough from the refr igerator in sma ll amounts. Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of waxed paper. Use the waxed paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped cookie. Press one almond into one end of each cookie to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze the cookie near the tip and again near the center of each to give the appearance of knuckles. You can also cut the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more fi nger-like appearance. Arrange the shaped cookies on the baking sheet.

4. Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are slightly golden in color, 20 to 25 minutes.

5. Remove the almond from the end of each cookie; squeeze a small amount of red decorating gel into the cavity; replace the almond to cause the gel to ooze out around the tip of the cookie.

BIGFOOT | FROM PAGE 12 A deafening silence came over the forest after the screech.

It was around 4:30 pm when Jim and his family were in the forest.

They started to leave, but then they began hearing branches breaking, as if something heavy was stepping on them. Jim and his family took off running after that, and they haven’t returned to that forest since then.

The Navajo people have stories of a large hairy creature, sometimes even considered as holy men, called Yeti Di Kluii. In recent times, sightings have been common in the remote areas of the Four Corners region. As of 2012, there’s been an increase in sightings of a Bigfoot creature in the Chuska Mountains of the Navajo Nation.

One ma n, Jer r y Lewis, came across Bigfoot when

he took his livestock into the mountains. He spoke to the Far mington Daily-Times in 2012 with the help of an interpreter.

“My animals froze and I saw the thing walk over the hill, it was taller than 8 or 9 feet, taller than the bushes, upright and hairy,” he said.

The most recent Bigfoot sighting wa s captured on video Oct. 8 as a married couple were celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary traveling on a train between Durango and Silverton in southwest Colorado. Shannon Parker and her husband Stetson spotted Bigfoot while fi lming the countryside.

“As we are passing by the mountains, Stetson sees something moving and then says, ‘I think it’s Bigfoot,’” Shannon said. “It was a cool sight for us to see, and seeing is believing.”

This repor ter did some digging and found that the legends of Bigfoot go back beyond recorded history and cover the world. The fa sci nation with Bigfoot has prompted enthusiasts to form Bigfoot S ea rch clubs. T he whole paranormal aspect of searching for Bigfoot has grown immensely.

In 2013, some 300 people gathered over the weekend at the Walter Collins Center in Fruitland, New Mexico, for the inaugural Northern New Mex ico Big foot a nd Pa r a nor m a l C on fer e nce.

Speakers came from as far away as Georgia and Missouri.

“It was a summer night when something that was black, tall, and covered in hair tried to turn the doorknob of my mobile home and then fled off the porch,” Harris said.

The next morning, Harris found a footprint measuring about 18 inches long and four inches wide outside her mobile home.

Honoring the dearly departed EXPERIENCE DAY OF THE DEAD IN NEW MEXICO Staff Reports

N

ew Mexico is a melding of many cultures and ways of life both modern and centuries-old. These are woven together to form a vibrant tapestry of people and traditions unlike anything else in the nation. One such tradition is Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead.

A Mexican holiday dating back hundreds of years, Día de los Muertos originated with the Mexica (popularly known as the Aztecs). Before Spanish colonization, the celebration took place during the summer. Later it was moved to autumn in order to coincide with the Catholic celebrations of All Saints’ Eve, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day. The modern iteration of the Día de los Muertos includes three days representing three related, but separate, ideologies — chock full of inspiring traditions that bring both closure as well as the feeling of time spent with a loved one who has passed. The celebrations are bright and elaborate, and they include the building of ofrendas (private altars) in celebration of the departed; honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds (the flower of the dead), and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed; and bringing gifts and belongings to graves.

Other traditions include muertos (the bread of the dead); cardboard skeletons; tissue paper garlands; fruit and nuts; incense; and other traditional foods and decorations. The holiday is now celebrated around the world, and each culture brings their own unique twist to it.

The three days celebrate HALLOWEEN

those who came before us and who have passed on. Death is an integral part of life, and one that everyone experiences, and Día De Los Muertos celebrations bring comfort and understanding instead of fear.

During the end of October into early November, gatherings and parades are held throughout the state. Whether you celebrate every year or you’re simply checking it out for the first time, these community celebrations welcome you with open arms as you honor your own loved ones.

Check out these events that will take place around the state: • Día de los Muertos in Santa Fe - Santa Fe’s second annual Día de los Muertos opens at 4 pm Oct. 27 with festive mariachi music and traditional entertainment on the Santa Fe Bandstand, festooned with papeles picados, the colorful cut paper decorations seen at celebrations throughout Mexico.

Signature Mexican foods that have enriched New Mexico’s own cuisine will be available as well as decorative items that customarily adorn ofrendas that honor those who have passed on. Expect to see brightly colored masks, decorative skulls, and hundreds of marigolds!

The evening opens at 5 pm with welcome remarks before the night lights up with live music from singer/songwriter and New Mexico State Historian Rob Martinez; Las Flores del Valle, a women-fronted trio pa ssionate about sha r ing many musical genres including boleros, rancheras and original songs; Lone Piñon, a New Mexican string band or “orquesta típica,” whose music celebrates the integrity and diversity of the region’s cultural roots; and The Mexican

Standoff, a socially conscious, bilingual LA/Mexico-City based “alternative ranchero” band with a comedic twist.

• Dia de los Muertos in Mesilla - Expect lots of music, folklorico dancing, food, and altars constructed for dearly departed family members at this Oct. 28 event. This community event is free to the public and held on the historic Mesilla plaza.

• Dia de los Muertos in Albuquerque - Day of the Tread. ‘Day of the Tread’ is a Day of the Dead/Halloweenthemed bicycling event for cyclists of all ages and skill levels. There is adventure for everyone. This event takes place in the Sawmill District in Old Town Albuquerque.

Q&A about a haunted doll

Tohatchi woman recalls a scary moment from her childhood

I

n 1982, on the reservation land of Tohatchi, just north of Gallup, little 5-year-old Geneva B. Wheat had a favorite doll she adored. She received it as a gift from her father who often was gone most of the time due to working on the railroad.

The Sun spoke with Wheat about her childhood memories of her doll and the strange incident that happened to her when she was 5, that still to this day sends shivers down her back.

Her father came home from working on the railroads one day and gave her a very special gift.

Wheat: Lots of ideas ran through my head just trying to guess what it could be. We didn’t have many toys back then, in fact we didn’t even have much growing up poor, so that’s why I was excited to

Sun: What happened?

Wheat: My dad reached around and grabbed his old Army duffle bag and pulled out our gifts. He started fi rst with my little sister and gave her a purple stuffed teddy bear. My sister quickly grabbed it and screamed so happily and took off with it. My mom called her back and told her to say thank you to our dad and she took off again with her new friend.

Sun: Now it was your turn, huh?

[Ms. Wheat wipes a tear from her cheek.]

Wheat: It was like the whole world stopped as I couldn’t wait for my dad to pull out my gift. He began joking with me and saying in Diné where was my gift and saying he might have lost it. I remember telling my father it’s probably way in the back of the bag and I could get it. He nodded his head and I quickly lunged forward and reached into the bag.”

[Ms. Wheat begins to cry.]

Wheat: I’m sorry, it still affects me to this day and I wish I never went into that bag.

[Ms. Wheat wipes away more tears.]

W heat: I reached into the bag and pulled out this huge life-size doll dressed in a Bilagaana’s (Anglo) dress in pink. I just stared at it. I started to cry and told my dad thank you over and over again. I clutched onto that doll and wouldn’t let it go. She had shiny blond hair, a chubby face, and she was about 24 inches tall. I just called her Baby and she was my fi rst and only doll I ever owned. After what happened, I never had a doll after that, not even to this day.

Sun: I know this is hard, please go on.

Wheat: My sister and I would pretend we were teachers, her bear and my doll were the students. We would come up with all sorts of games with our new playmates. My mom would be constantly washing and cleaning up our buddies from all the mud and dirt on them, along with us too. When school began, I would put my doll on my blanket and tell her goodbye and couldn’t wait to play with her after school.

Sometimes my little sister would be playing with her when I got home from school and I would get mad at her.

I would tell my sister that Baby doesn’t like her a nd only likes me, then I would get i nt o t rouble w it h my mom. One day, I came home and my sister was playing

with her again and I got mad and said the same thing to her. I was only 5 and didn’t think much of it when my sister said that the doll likes her better.

[M s. W heat stops a nd begins again.]

Wheat: I hate telling this next part because I can still remember every little detail.

One night my little sister and I were on the floor playing school with our playmates like we always did. My sister said again that Baby likes her more and I said she likes me more because I’m her mama. I had Baby sitting right next to me and said to the doll, “You like me more because I’m your mama, huh.” But this time the doll moved its head toward me.

I got up so fast and screamed in terror and ran toward my mom.

Sun: Wow, are you serious?

Wheat: I couldn’t stop screa m i ng, cr y i ng, a nd I couldn’t believe what just happened. My mom thought I was just joking, but I kept telling her that the doll moved. I was so scared that I clung on to my mom. She got up and went toward the doll, and I quickly let go of her and ran outside.

I was freaking out so bad and didn’t want to go near that doll.

It just slowly turned its head and looked at me. Oh my God, I can still see it in my head. It was frightening, and being only 5-years-old at the time, it felt so much worse.

me down, I was so scared that nothing could calm me down.

My mom eventually threw the doll outside in the trash that night. I had many sleepless nights as a kid because of that doll.

Sun: I appreciate you

telling us your story, but what happened to that doll?

Wheat: I remember my mom taking the doll and throwing it in the trash can outside.

The next day she checked to see if it was there still for my benefit - it was. She built a fi re

pieces. Roll one dough piece around each hot dog, creating the look of a mummy. Place dots of mustard on the top of each for the eyes, nose, and mouth. Arrange hot dogs on a baking sheet.

Bake in the preheated oven until crescent dough is golden brown and f laky, about 10 minutes

I sti l l get frea ked out when I see dolls like her. I have daughters that play with dolls, but nothing like what I had. Be careful when you buy things like that, because

you never know what you are bringing into your home. I’m a grown woman and as funny as it sounds, that incident that happened to me as a child still haunts me…I mean it just slowly turned its head towards me and looked at me.

Pretzel Broomsticks Prep Time: 10 minutes Total Time: 10 minutes Yield: 12 Ingredients: 4 string cheese sticks, or more as needed 12 pretzel sticks 1 leaf fresh spinach, cut into strips, or more as needed

Directions: Cut each string cheese stick into thirds. Snip the ends of each third into thin strings to look like a broom.

Place a pretzel stick into each piece of string cheese to create the broom handle. Tie a spinach stip around the cheese.

Possession movies, past to present CHECK THESE PICKS FOR HALLOWEEN FARE

t has now been 50 years since one of the most financially successful horror pictures of all time was released to audiences. The Exorcist (1973) was a landmark and influential film that told the story of a little girl being possessed by a demon. It included a lengthy and memorable confrontation between the force and a pair of Catholic priests.

The movie became Warner Bros.’ all-time highest grossing picture during its original run and is still adored by fans today.

Wit h H a l loween a r r iving and readers looking for creepy v iewing options, it seems like a n appropr iate time to examine just a few of the effective and underseen possession films from the past five decades.

For those who don’t enjoy the horror genre at all, there

i s a t it le or two to check out.

The comedy Al l of Me (1984) sta rs Steve Martin as a n at tor ney who is asked to a mend t he w i l l of a we a lt hy bu t no t o r iou s l y difficult client. As it turns out, this woman (played by Lily Tomlin) is a bedridden spinster who believes she is about to die and has hired a my s t ic t o t r a n s fer her sou l i nto a not her w i l l i ng individual.

A m i s t a ke occu r s a nd t he prot agon ist f i nd s her soul both in his head a nd in possession of half of his body. There is some dated humor and it takes a while for things to get cook ing, but once the soul transfer o c c u r s , M a r t i n’s p e r formance is amazing. He truly convinces viewers that two different people are fighting to control his cha racter’s

body and the physical struggles are outrageously funny to behold. The mov ie ha s never received a Blu -r ay release, but is available to st rea m for f ree on a few sites.

T h a t s a me ye a r, i nde pendent producers Cannon F il ms ca me up w it h one of t he mo s t bi za r re a nd half-baked mov ie ide a s e v e r. T he y decided that a film combining elements from their popular Enter the Ninja series with F la sh dan ce a nd T h e Exorcist would result in box office gold. The result was Ninja III: The Domination (1984), one of the most ludicrous pictures of its era.

It featu res a n aerobics instructor (Lucinda Dickey) who gets possessed by a n ev i l n i nja a nd goe s on a rampage. Everything about it is completely bonkers and it’s the kind of mov ie that gener a t e s l au g h - out -loud moments instead of chills.

O ne of t he mov ie’s mo s t notable sequences involves a Japanese exorcist performing a ritual that results in the possessed woman literally spinning head over heels.

B u t w h a t a b ou t f i l m s t h a t a r e a c t u a l ly s c a r y ?

N a t u r a l l y, y o u c a n’ t g o wrong with the original The Exorcist. It’s still at the top of the heap for possession movies.

The film boa sts unusually high production value,

a thoughtful screenplay about t he st r ug g le between good and evil, showstoppi ng ef fec t s work and compelling performances from Max Von Sydow, Jason Miller, Ellen Bu r st y n a nd you ng L i nda Blair. The exorcism scenes truly feel like a battle being waged and the climax involving a steep set of stairs is hard to forget.

Sur pr isingly, one of its off icia l follow-ups is a lso worth a watch.

T he Exorcist III (1990) is a sequel that focuses on the police detective from the f irst mov ie (i n t h is f i l m the cha racter is played

by George C . S c o t t) .

He investigates a ca se involv ing an institutionalized serial killer who has a connection to the original feature. A s the stor y pro gresses, viewers learn that a familiar demonic entity in the murderer’s body is possessing patients and staff at a local hospital, resulting in more slayings.

L ike t he or ig i na l f i l m, this effor t wa s wr itten by William Peter Blatty (based on h i s ow n novel), w it h Blatty himself also taking over the director ial reins.

T he f i l m ex udes a n eer ie atmosphere throughout and features a couple beautifully

s t a ged jolt s (a long shot involving a hospital corridor is impossible to forget).

Although many might not initia lly think of them a s demonic possession movies, the Evil Dead series from Sam Raimi are great titles that do f it i nto the category. His or igina l tr ilog y, i nclud ing T he Evil Dea d (1981), Ev i l D e a d II (19 87 ) a nd the more comedic Ar my of Darkness (1992) are genuine cult classics.

The f irst two claustro phobic effor ts are set at a remote cabi n a nd featu re college-age kids play ing a recording of an archeologist reading the Necronomicon or Book of the Dead. The group must do battle with a Kandarian demon who physically attacks and possesses severa l of the cha racters.

The mov ie made a hor ror hero of its lead Ash (Bruce Campbell). In the high-energ y second f ilm (my persona l favor ite), the hero’s hand becomes possessed by the demon, which leads to a bloody confrontation that is both horrifying and hilarious as the man battles his own severed appendage.

The later Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead (2015 - 2018) continued delivering more gruesome fun. And for those wonder ing, the Evil Dead (2013) remake is also quite

SCARY MOVIES | FROM PAGE 20 potent and worth checking out. As for the recent Evil Dead Rise (2023), it certainly has its moments, but takes a deadly serious approach to the mater ia l. This lack of humor ultimately exposes some of the concept’s sillier attributes.

Another effort that may make one initially scratch their heads is the Spanish found-footage feature REC (2007). It presented aud iences with the tale of a T.V. newswoman stuck in a quarantined apartment complex where a viral outbreak turns p e o pl e i n t o z o m b i e - l i ke monsters.

So, what does any of this have to do with possession mov ies? Well, the equa lly impressive REC 2 (2009) picks up i m med iat ely after the clo se of t he first chapter and relays mor e ba ckstor y. A militar y team and M i n ist r y of Hea lt h f ig u re stor m t he loca le wea r i ng body ca ms, but it is soon revea led t hat t he gover nme nt worke r i s a pr ie s t working for the Vatican. He revea ls that the outbreak

is not virus-based and that “patient zero” who is hiding within the building is actually possessed by a demon.

T h is tw ist spi ns the entire series in a new and fascinating direction. It’s a fast-paced, pulse-pounding and terrifying feature that puts viewers in the middle of t he a c t ion a nd m a ke s them feel as though they are present w ith the leads. A couple of additional sequels followed, but neither capture the excitement and urgency of the first two films.

In si di o u s (2010) f rom James Wan (The Conjuring, Saw) is a possession f ilm that also send s sh ivers down the spine.

T h is t a le follows a family whose youngest son fa lls i nto a coma. When family members star t seeing a threatening red-faced demon randomly appearing, the father (Patrick Wilson) learns that he has the power to project h i msel f i nto the spi r itua l purgator y where his child is lost, all among the dark forces who seek to possess him.

Obviously, story elements harken back to The Exorcist, but this movie manages to

add new wrinkles by sending characters into a supernatural dimension filled with demons. The cast are compelling and the movie’s jump scares are perfectly timed, making the film quite effective (for this reviewer, none of the follow ing chapters have been as successful).

One title that seems to have fallen off of the radar is t he per iod ch i l ler, T h e Quiet Ones (2014). Yes, it do e s n’t del iver a ny t h i n g truly unique, but it is a pot ent hom age to British supernatural hor ror f i l m s of the 1970s.

T he plot involves a student hired to fi lm an experi ment i nvolv i ng a you ng pat ient who eit her ha s a psychological disorder, telekinetic powers, or has been demonically possessed. This young man becomes sympathetic to her and as strange manifestations continue, his inability to remain impartial puts the entire group in danger. The film is no masterpiece and the ending doesn’t land perfectly, but the performances from Jared Harris, Sam Clafl in and Olivia Cooke are solid, some of the jolts work and the movie certainly suggests that the possession

theory may have some merit.

Of course, a recent and very different title making a big splash is the Australian f i l m Ta l k t o Me (2 02 3).

T h i s ef for t i nclude s a severed, embalmed hand that very briefly allows a user to be possessed by a random spirit from beyond the grave. When a 17-yearold (Sophie Wilde) and her friends play the game, the br ief i nteract ion i n it ia l ly gives them a drug-like rush.

But when one of the players is left too long in the void, he loses control of his body a nd what follows is tr uly unsettling.

The mov ie m ilks ever y oppor tunity to send chills down the spine and does so with style and aplomb. While there are a few moments that stretch believability (like the lack of secur ity at a local hospital), this is a very different and original take on t he po s s e s sion f i l m t h a t delivers the goods.

Those are just a few movies that may be of interest.

I f y o u’r e l o o k i n g fo r more ideas, The Amityville H o r r o r (19 7 9) f e a t u r e s demonic forces in a house

inf luencing the actions of a fa m i ly ma n (James Brolin).

While this “tr ue stor y” was eventually revealed to be a hoax, it still has its share of spine-chilling moments.

The stoner h o r r o r /c o m edy Idle Hands (1999), involved a lazy teen doi ng bat t le with his own severed a nd demonically possessed hand.

It entertained this reviewer a s a you ng m a n a nd h a s since become a cult item.

Additionally, the moody prequel Annabelle: Creation ( 2 0 17 ) h a s plenty of atmosphere a nd sta nds a s the best title in the Conjuring s p i n - o f f series.

And that is only a few of the many possession films just waiting to be watched a nd wor m t hei r way i nto your psyche this Halloween.

Blu-ray/DVD Roundup for October 27, 2023

elcome to another look at some of the highlights arriving on Blu-ray and DVD. BIG NEW RELEASES!

CADDY HACK: Few would think of a golf course as a setting for terror, but this low-budget horror/comedy a t t empt s t o do so. When a group of golf caddies begin vanishing (only to be found later torn to bits), the owner of the facility attempts to cover up the deaths. As it turns out, a group of pesticide-mutated gophers are the responsible party. The unhinged course groundskeeper decides to wage war and go toe-to-toe with the dangerous creatures.

There have only been a couple of online reviews thus far. One

states that the humor is cringeworthy and that the picture isn’t as entertaining as it could have been. But another maintains that the monsters in the movie are entertaining and that the screenplay delivers plenty of effective lowbrow laughs.

THE MEG 2: THE TRENCH: The Meg was a tongue-in-cheek horror/comedy about a killer megalodon that became a surprise late summer hit in 2018. This sequel finds the first film’s protagonist unattached after the passing of his significant other and co-raising his late partner’s daughter with her uncle. As it turns out, this relative is financing a major undersea exploration of the region where the megalodon first appeared. The hero tags along to make sure the operation goes smoothly, while the youngster

Of course, things go horr ibly w r on g and the group end up trapped at the bottom of the sea. While there, they discover other strange life forms that haven’t been seen in millions of years.

The majority of critics slammed this follow-up. About one-quarter did state that it was everything fans would hope for, delivering silliness and plenty of sharks (as well as other beasts) eating up cast members. But everyone else complained that the film had a needlessly convoluted plot, didn’t deliver thrills or laughs, and forgot to focus on the title monsters.

It stars Jason Statham, Jing Wu, Shuya Sophia Cai, Cliff Curtis, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta and Skyler Samuels.

BL ASTS FROM THE PAST! It may not be the busiest week for new films, but older titles are more than making up for it.

Arrow Video is releasing a Blu-ray of Sammo Hung’s The Iron Fisted Monk (1977). The director stars as a man seeking vengeance for the murder of his father. This title marks the famed martial artist’s directorial debut, and it’s considered to be more disturbing and violent tha n ma ny of t he pictures he made afterward.

A r r ow i s presenting a 2K restoration of the uncensored cut of the fi lm (which received an adultsonly Category III rating in Hong Kong). You can watch the movie in Cantonese or Mandarin with English subtitles, or choose between two different English dubs of the picture. It also comes with a

martial arts expert audio commentary, two archival interviews with Sammo Hung, a talk with Casanova Wong, a trailer, a booklet with writing on the film and a double-sided poster featuring original and newly commissioned art for the movie.

Messiah of Evil (1974) is arriving on Blu-ray courtesy of Radiance Films. This 50 th anniversary “Limited Edition” release of an eerie low-budget chiller came from the minds of Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz.

The pair co-wrote American Graffiti, I n d i a n a Jones an d t h e Te m p l e of Doom, and Howar d t h e Duck (which Huyck a l so directed) and also crafted this feature about a woman who travels to a small town and experiences some

The movie barely got a release, but has earned a following over the years with its dreamlike imagery. This release includes a 4K restoration from the best surviving film elements, a horror film expert commentary, an archival interview with Willard Huyck, a lengthy documentary on the production, a visual essay on the picture and a trailer. This particular edition also comes with an 80-page booklet with essays on the movie and is limited to only 3000 copies.

The same distributor is also presenting Visible Secret (2001) on Blu-ray. This Hong Kong effort follows a man who falls in love with a woman who claims that she can see ghosts. The disc features a conversation with the director, a visual essay on the movie, an archival making-of documentary and a trailer, as well as a booklet with writing on this feature’s place in Hong Kong horror. Apparently, this is a single pressing of 5000 copies in the U.S. and UK and it will not be rereleased once it’s sold out.

Spea k i ng of creeper s, Criterion is putting out the phe no me n a l Nicole Kidman ef for t T h e Others (2001) in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set (it’s also ava i lable a s a standalone Blu-ray). It’s about a mother and her two children who live at an isolated estate. When a trio of individuals arrive at the home, strange events begin occurring. Besides vastly improved picture quality, it has a “looking

back at the movie” featurette, another segment that discusses the paranormal angle of the movie, an examination of the score, a visual effects piece, a look inside the production, an archived talk with the director and publicity materials.

Mill Creek Entertainment is putting out a “Hard as Steel U lt i mate Edition’’ Steelbook of t he mu s ic a l comedy Walk Hard: T he Dewey Cox Story (2007).

This title is a Wal-Mart exclusive, so you won’t be able to find it anywhere else.

Paramount is putting together the box set Paramount Scares: Volume 1 that contains 4K Ultra HD and Blu-rays of a random selection of their gen re t it le s.

T h i s col le c tion includes Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Rosemary’s Baby (1968), Pet Sematary (1989), Crawl (2019) and Smile (2022).

Severin is putting out some intriguing titles. Clearcut (1991) involves a lawyer who is paired with an Indigenous activist looking for revenge on a logging company. Graham Greene stars in this Canadian effort and the Standard Edition Blu-ray includes an audio commentary with an anthropologist, an audio interview with Greene, a featurette on the score and some short films from the

region with similar subject matter.

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Sony is giving their remake/ reboot of Godzilla (1998) a 4K Ultra HD a nd Blu-r ay Steelbook. It come s w it h tra ilers, a behind-the scenes featurette, a music video and a compilation of Godzilla fight scenes.

Finally, Warner Archive is releasing several catalog titles as made-to-order Blu-rays. You can now purchase Before Night Falls (2000) with Javier Bardem and Johnny Depp, as well as the Katherine Hepburn/Colin Clive adventure film Christopher Strong (1933).
