INTRO.

How many times we try to explain a Project and fail to do it? We depend in our presence to explain what we are trying to do. Even when they are only simple questions that have to be answered so that everyone can understand it. Also they are often given for granted in the explanation so we think everyone understands; what is it?, where is it?, why is it done? And in some cases, how it will be done? Everything is reduced to nice looking renders and technical drawings that can’t be really analyzed because of the scale of the drawing and lack of information.

WHERE?

WHAT?

And it is not new for architects that have to find a way to communicate their ideas, Le Corbusier showed us the importance in communication and thanks to his relations with publishers and very simple schemes he managed to spread his ideas through the world in times when sharing ideas was more difficult. There is also Rem Koolhaas who work with Bruce Mau, a graphic designer to make S,M,L,XL one of the most important books in architecture that thanks to the innovative way of describing Koolhaas projects was able to again communicate all of his ideas. And now we can see Yes is More, by Bijarke Ingle that not only he started his book as a comic and using very good methods to transmit the ideas of his studio, but now has also transformed the same book with the use of technology in to an APP that makes the whole experience a very interactive way of understanding architecture. This Portfolio will try to show part of the ideas behind what I believe of architecture responding always to the projects. The next symbols will help identify what are you looking at the page, and also will let you analize and read the project in many ways but always aware of the basic ideas of the project.

Tacubaya D.F. _MEX ´12 Mix use (Housing +offices +library +plaza).

? Regeneration of the Ermita Cinema Building. Opening the old projection hall, turn it to a public space & adding new program to the building.

16

The historic context. The intervention is on the old building by the architect Sordo Madaleno, first of its kind, built in the 60´s, as well as the whole block.

Located in Mexico City, it’s home for many local musicians and artist like Chucho Reyes who lived here. The site is near the olde entrance, that now is the building by Juan Segura The Ermita.

present condition.

Now in the heart of the city is one of the best connected place in the city, three mayor subway lines pass by. Here the mexican archtiect built his house-studio, we can find also the Ortega gardens and the Gilardi House.

Now the place seems to be abandoned, the old tradition for movie theaters in the zone died, leaving the old building forgotten. Insde the main hall got destroyed and divided to become a multicinema that no one likes to go because its a dangerous place.

D.F. _MEX ´12 Shelter for the migrants from south america.

Reference.

L .Can I Have a roof? ? The old shelter has no more capacity. With prefab materials, the main objective is to make a public space for the all the community. 1. The contest asked for a shelter for migrants. 2. So the idea comes from a shelter, and a common thing in every shelter was always a: roof. 3. Create a meeting point where people could have a public space and share a shelter. 4. built with standart materials to spread it through the road of the migrants.

The shelter.

context.

22

Instructions.

To sustain the idea, Mario Vargas Llosa in his book, la civilizacion del espectaculo (The civilization of entertainment) says anything thats not seen, it doesnt exist, so the idea is to put the migrants issue in the mind of the people to make it real, and thats why we respond with a public space.

XL .Mediapark

The Contest asked for a Mediapark in Cd. Juarez Ch. Mex. In the old Convention center PRONAF which is now an almost abandoned place. Arquine Contest. Team: Abelardo G. +David M.+Roberto J. + Enrique de la C. Everyone becomes an observer, violence happends because everyone is afraid to report it due to police corruption so, if everyone can report to a place where everyCd. Juarez CHI_MEX ´11 one can see, no matter what they send, a twitt, a fb post, or a video, then it will then Mediatheque & park become a safe place. ? No cultural space to help fighting the violence. German Impresionist as well as George Orwell said that people change their behavior when they know they are observed, this had an impact on architects like Repetitive module that can transmit images of the Mies Van Der Rohe who wanted to create his transparen buildings. So whay if evcity, preventing & communicating the citizens. eryone in the city could look for each other & there was a transparent city?

24

The site, an old mall and convention center.

the Module.

A Mediapark can’t solve the violence problem @Cd_Juarez but a larger scale intervention may start a change that can improve the situation.

turn it to a Mediapark & public space. Behind a wall you feel safe but you ignore what happends behind it.

Behind a cristal wall you could see, but you will never feel safe watching anything bad.

Expand the modul in the city to have a larger scale impact. turn a wall in to something that can show whats happening behind you will still feel safe and aware.

25

The mediapark or the modul will not change things in short time

26

But as the city learns to use the modul, things will start to change.

? .A Museum?

CLB Contest. Team: Abelardo G. +David M. + Enrique de la C.

Fundidora Mty/N.L._MEX ´11 defending an Idea.

? a contest that asked for a museum of architecture. not do anything and make the people aware that the city is the museum of architecutre. 1. For this contest they asked for a museum of architecture for the city of Monterrey N. L. Mex...But how can can you display architecture like an object in a museum? what’s the correct size & format for architecture? 2. Formalism could take the project to very different paths:

3. But you can speak what you believe:

The city is the museum of architecture

conclutions. Like in the book of Julio Cortazar, Rayuela. In all portfolios & projects the reader has the chance to decide what story to read, or what path to take to understand it. But it is the job of the writter and of course the architect to put all the information necessary to make everyone in the end understand the main idea. Remembering a talk we had after work with the architects B.V. Doshi, Rajeev K. & Sonke H. where it was asked to everyone What is the next step for architecture? Apple proved that with design and creation the world could be changed and with todays technology Zaha and Ghery finally achieved & improved what Robert Venturi exposed in his book Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture where any form could be finally acomplished and architecture became free of style and rather has a more personal identity in each project. But has architecture reach it’s limits? After this, there is nothing more than the creativity of the architects? Solano Benitez tought me that there is a long way to go and we have to really understand, what are we doing? Rethink architecture to achieve its true purpose to humanity, good architecture has to become democratic, it should be everyones right to enjoy & live it unstead of feeling discriminated by who can pay for it. In conclution we have to rethink architecture, and maybe question again the idea of an international movement, not as a set of dogmatic aesthetic rules on how architecture should be, but how can we achieve everywhere in the world good architecture. thanks to all the people that support me.
