Introducing Akril The new, environmentally friendly way to add colour, functionality and durability to your design projects. For residential or commercial projects – wet areas, decorative panels and virtually any vertical surface – Akril is brilliant. It’s lightweight, cost effective and easy to use on site. Best of all, it lets your ideas shine through. Benefits and applications: The very durable Akril panel was originally developed as a cost-effective alternative to painted glass – but its versatility, flexibility and workability let it stand alone in all kinds of domestic, commercial and display situations. Akril is an environmentally friendly, highly engineered polymer, enhanced with colour. Quite simply, it offers a new source of design inspiration for showers, laundries, kitchen doors and walls and any area in the home or office where direct heat will not be applied. Being half the weight and up to 40% more cost effective than painted glass is a great start – but Akril has so much more going for it. It‘s the ideal canvas for architects and designers where facelifts or image upgrades are needed because they can be completed quickly and efficiently. Its readily available and easy to install, reducing lead times and delays. Akril has higher heat distortion than conventional polymers (up to 100° Celsius) which means it has more applications and scratches can be polished out.
Architectural Specification
Put simply, Akril Panel allows builders to turn up on site and deal with any variation presented in the construction phase in a creative and cost effective way. That’s brilliant. Brilliant!

Substitution
Health and Safety
Akril accepts no liability if the products are not used in accordance with instructions contained in this technical literature. Substitution of the specified or recommended components with alternative brands can compromise performance dramatically and may void any warranty.
Under normal conditions of use, Akril Panel presents no known health hazard. Careful lifting techniques must be employed to minimise risk of injury. Sawing and machining equipment must be fitted with dust extractors to ensure that dust levels are kept within standards laid down by Occupational Health and Safety Australia.
Akril and other products
Dust masks conforming to AS/NZS 1715 and AS/NZS 1716 and eye protection conforming to AS/NZS 1337 must be worn at all times during machining and sanding operations.
Akril systems include different Akril products which are manufactured and supplied by CME Coatings Ltd of Australia.

Storage and Handling
Waste Minimisation
Deliver Akril to site immediately before installation to reduce the risk of damage.
If you are planning on using Akril for a large project please contact us for custom sizes to minimise wastage.
Akril must be neatly stacked to avoid sheet distortion and damage. This can be achieved by stacking on a clean flat surface. Sheets stacked on a concrete floor must be separated from the floor surface by a moisture barrier such as a polythene sheet or placed on bearers (min 75 x 50).
Durability When stored, handled, installed and maintained in accordance with this document, Akril has a serviceable life of at least 10 years
Akril must be kept dry being stored inside a building and under cover. When stacking high, ensure bearers are vertically in line to best distribute the load.
. Akril will not be liable to any persons if the conditions as to storage, handling, installation and maintenance of Akril as outlined within this document are not complied with. It is the obligation of the installer of the Akril to convey this information to the relevant owner / occupier.
Architectural Specification
Consider floor loadings as Akril weighs in the range of 1200kg/m3. Large or multiple stacks may quickly overload the flooring structure. Akril may be leaned against the wall where floor storage is unavailable. The maximum number of sheets that can be stacked this way is 10, before edge loading on the first sheet is considered excessive. To reduce the risk of toppling, the bottom of the first sheet must be placed 15 cm from the wall and stored on a soft floor such as carpet.
Akril is a painted product and needs to be carried and stored with care to ensure the back of the panels which are painted are not damaged. Leave protective film on until ready for installation. Leave front film on the panel until the last possible moment.

Forming Akril as panel inserts
Akril Panel has excellent flexibility: 6mm sheet can be cold-bent to a recommended minimum radius of 1.5m
Akril can easily be installed into framed moving items such as cupboard doors, sliding wardrobe doors and swing door frames. Akril can also be used as office partitions.
4mm sheet can be cold-bent to a minimum radius of 0.8m Akril Panel can be bent using heat to a minimum radius of 6mm. This is however a specialised process and should only be attempted by an experienced acrylic thermoformer or acrylic fabricator. As with all acrylic sheet products, the bending process actually modifies the structure of the material and as such will void warranty.
Akril as complete moving panels Akril can be laminated to conventional building panel such as MDF or similar, allowing the concealment of hinges, latches and other hardware.
Machining Akril has superb machining characteristics. It is able to be sawn, routed, drilled, tapped, laser and water

Splashbacks
Permeability
WET AREAS
When installed in wet areas, the rear of the sheet must be sealed using a suitable sealer. (See www.akril.com.au for a current list of approved sealers.)
Akril is ideal for use as a wet area splashback. Most local bodies now require a waterproof barrier to the area immediately behind a splash zone (bathroom vanity, bath etc). In this area Akril is fully compliant with all council requirements.
Heat tolerance
KITCHENS
Akril makes an excellent splashback for areas behind worktops and hobs. Although Akril is not recommended for use behind gas hobs or burners. It is recommended an non combustible material goes behind the cook top 150mm high or more complying to the appropriate standard. Akril can be used past the point of 150mm high from the bench top. Alternatively a non combustible material could be used all the way up.
Akril is classed as combustible material and must not be installed behind an open flame, cook tops or when the Akril Panel has been engineered with a higher heat resistance than standard Acrylic:

Cutting Panels Hand and Plunge Router
Ensure the panel is well supported either on a table or solid flat surface. Cutting on a smooth surface will reduce the chance of marking the surface during cutting. Make sure to shake off any debris on the machine or vacuum clean between operations.
Hand/ plunge routers are easy to use with Akril. Always clamp work piece solidly and use guides with the router.
Before cutting Akril, check measure dimension and square.
Routers are an excellent tool to dress a previously sawn edge which will then require less finishing.
Using a suitable marker e.g. ballpoint pen, pencil etc mark out the sizes. Always use a fine tooth aluminium blade suitable for cutting Akril (see page 14).
Table Saw
Generally speaking, panels can be cut using most commonly accepted practices used for machining MDF.
Akril can be cut to size using a circular saw. It is important to use the correct blade (see page 13 ) as this reduces the blade corner chips to an absolute minimum, thereby reducing the possibility of chipping the sawn edge of Akril.
CNC Router
The most critical times when machining with any Architectural Specification Flat Bed CNC Routers are ideal for cutting Akril into circular blade are feed-in and feed-out. Both must be almost any shape. A large selection of straight and profile router bits are readily available to produce almost any edge profile.
taken very carefully and at a reduced feed rate. Always allow the panel to pass through the blade at an even rate – never force the panel.
Automatic Plane
Laser Cutter

Akril is suitable for laser cutting. As with any CNC process, complex shapes can be produced to high precision and repeatability. An experienced operator is able to achieve a perfect mirror-polished edge requiring no finishing. Due to its highly specialised nature, advice on this method is beyond the scope of this document. Consult an acrylic fabricator for laser cutting contractors experienced in working with acrylics.

SAWING To cut, lay sheet on a flat firm surface. Cut with a fine tooth aluminium blade. Allow 3mm expansion gap around panel. Use Neutral cure silicone to adhere to surface.
Circular Saw With quality equipment, an excellent edge finish can be achieved with Akril. The main factors in achieving the best possible outcome with a circular saw are: • Panel rigidity. Clamp the sheet on both sides of the cut. • Saw stability. Always use a good quality fence or guide to improve saw stability and straight-line cutting. • Saw bearing quality. The price of a circular saw can be a good indication of the quality of the bearings used inside. Cheaper saws often use bushes that offer little to limit the blade’s sideways float, and will begin to wear quickly. This will have a dramatic impact on cut quality.
Architectural Specification
• Blade selection. Always use a blade with the correct cutting geometry. Aluminium blades generally work well with Akril.
Opening
Reduce the cutting depth to allow the blade to cut approximately 7mm through the Akril, preferably cutting into a sacrificial MDF board or similar.

Drilling
Hand Drilling
Drilling Akril is easy and professional results can be achieved following these guidelines:
In most site applications, drill bit options are minimal. In this case the best option is to use a blunt drill as shown bel.
• Ensure an MDF panel or something similar is behind the Akril when drillings.
HAND DRILLING In most site applications, drill bit options are minimal. In this case the best option is to use a blunt drill as shown.
• Many different drill forms have been assessed and work well but all should have the cutting edge ground off (blunt) so that the drill ‘wears through’ rather than ‘bites into’ the Akril . • High cutting speeds are advised and be careful to back off the drilling pressure when breaking though the bottom of the hole DRILL GEOMETRY
Machine Drilling Specialised drills are available for drilling Akril. Most are designed to be used in either CNC machinery or at least a drill press.

Hole Saws
Powerpoint: Jig Saw Technique
Hole saws should be sharp, but the pilot drill blunt. It is recommended to drill the hole saw half way through, then turn the Akril Panel over and finish the hole. This prevents the edge from ‘blowing out’. Debur the edge with 100-grit sandpaper.
Determine the position of the outlet on the panel and mark the perimeter of the cut-out. Drill a 10mm hole inside each corner. Insert jigsaw blade and cut along the lines, leaving the radiused corners intact (this prevents stress in the panel)
Cut Outs When measuring and marking for cut-outs around power outlet boxes etc, ensure enough clearance is given for the switch body and that the cover plates or bulkhead fittings will cover the finished cut-outs. In wet areas, use an approved sealer to seal the edge and a 50mm perimeter of the painted side of any cut out. (see page 29).
Powerpoint: Hole Saw technique Specification Architectural Determine the position of the outlet on the panel and mark the centre. Now mark 20mm either side of the centre mark. Drill each hole with a 65mm hole saw.

Finishing the edge after cutting
Bending Akril
If the Akril edge is to be left exposed, it can be easily finished to a polished glass-like quality. A good finish left from the machining process will take considerably less time to finish.
4mm Akril Panel can be cold-bent to a minimum radius of 0.8mm.
Always peel back the protective film 25mm from the edge while polishing. Remove any sanding dust between grades and polishing compounds immediately.
Double-sided tape can also be used to help secure the panel during adhesive curing phase.
6mm Akril Panel can be cold-bent to a minimum radius of 1.5mm.
It is recommended to clamp the panel while the adhesive cures.
HAND FINISHING
Fixing of Cold Bend Panels
1. Use a 240-grit paper to remove any cutter marks from the machined edge and then progress to a 400grit then 600 grit.

Hydrogen/ Oxygen mix. Contact an Acrylic fabricator for this service. An experienced operator can leave an excellent finish.
• Roll Akril onto the curved surface starting at one end and smoothing the panel out in the direction of installation.
BUFFING
• There is no need to apply excessive pressure – a firm hand is enough to spread out adhesive
Buffing speed is approximately 1,100~1,400 r.p.m. (buff speed should be 700~1,500m/min.) and abradant is jointly used. If buffing speed is too high or if buffing is placed at one part, sticking or inner stress can be generated by heat.
• Clean up any adhesive that spills out the sides of the Akril. NOTES • Great care must be exercised using double-sided tape as once stuck, it is virtually impossible to remove or re-use • Methods may vary between different adhesive product, always follow manufacturers instructions. TM

Architectural Specification Getting started Not all walls and floors are square. For aesthetic purposes, plan for part panels to be placed at the interior corners of the room ensuring they are also from the same batch, which can be referred to on the batch number on each sheet. Walls may need to be packed out to ensure wall become square so Akril is installed flat. Hint: Wall can be packed out by building up silicone on one side and using a straight edge to check for square. Note: Panels are usually installed vertically on walls, but can be fixed horizontally in a dry area for contrast or to create a feature. If panels are to be laid horizontally, ensure continuous support is provided behind all joints as the vertical loading is increased. It is never recommended to install panels horizontally in a wet application.

Installing Walls
Removing Protective Film
Walls lined with plasterboard, or a similar flat substrate, are ideal for direct fixing provided the surface is flat, sound, dust-free, properly fixed and stopped to a level-3 minimum finish.
Akril is supplied with protective film on both sides: Recycled Sticker:Akril is also supplied with a recycled sticker number 7, which should be left on the Akril for its recycled life after use.
Note: When installing Akril over a rough surface such as Brick, place the panel and be careful not to move the panel up and down to position it as it may scratch the paint on the pack of the panel.
Painted Side: has a plastic film design for protection of the painted surface. Remove this film when all machining operations are complete and the panel is ready to be adhered to the wall/surface.
Concrete and Masonry Walls
Exposed Side: has a clear plastic film designed for protection against scratches. Remove the film completely at the very last stage by gently peeling down the sheet surface – never peel at right angles to the sheet as this may pull the sheet away from the installed wall/ surface.
Ensure concrete/masonry wall is dry and will remain so. Fully cured concrete/masonry can be suitable to fix directly under ideal conditions, however it is recommended that you seal the surface with an approved sealant first to ensure permanent adhesion.
Architectural Specification
Never attempt to cut the protective films with a knife as this may scratch the surface.
Renovations
Items needed during installation
When using Akril over existing walls, previously painted surfaces must be checked for integrity and remedial work carried out where necessary. The surface should then be cleaned and scuffed with coarse sandpaper to ensure a good key for adhesion.

General Installation Akril should be used on fully lined walls e.g. waterproof board, plasterboard, fibre-cement board or masonry walls, etc. The first sheet should be installed at the internal of the corner and work away from the internal corner. The first sheet adhered to the internal corner of the wall and the next sheet is in installed over the trailing edge of the first sheet and so on. Please ensure there is a 3mm expansion join around the sheet as per the diagrams in the coming pages. It is possible to allow for expansion on one side of the sheet when installing 1 or 2 sheets as detailed on page 22 below. Akril will expand and contract in hot and cold temperatures and should never be jammed in tight on corners or butt joins.

Installing the Internal Corner and Adhere Sheet
Remove the protective film from rear of Akril. Seal the perimeter and all penetrations and penetration edges with a band of recommended silicone extending 50mm from the edge of the panel as illustrated, above. Apply adhesive to rear of Akril Panel as shown in the illustration. Apply bead of flexible caulking to up-stand lip of tray. Apply a bead of flexible caulking along the full height of the corner

onto the liner at the edge of the anti-fracture membrane.
SEALENT SEALANT ADHESIVE APPROX 100MM APART
The internal corner is crucial to the installation as Architectural Specification it will allow for thermal expansion and contraction. Each Akril sheet will expand and contract 3mm into and out of the corner silicone join. The first sheet will butt into the wall and allow for 3mm expansion while the second sheet will butt onto the first Akril sheet allowing for expansion and contraction against the first Akril sheet which was installed. This will reduce the visable join line to 3mm instead of 6mm.

Pre-drilling screw holes
Do Not Screw Directly Into Akril as it may cause the Akril sheet to split.
Peel back protective film from front face of Akril, to the width of door return + 25mm from the outer edge of Akril. Fit door returns in place ensuring they are in the correct position and plumb. Drill clearance holes through Akril and wall linings using a blunt drill bit outlined in detail for Machining Akril.

Sealing the internal corner
Akril suggests using a neutral cure silicone. A bead is run from the top of the Akril down the internal corner to the bottom of the shower base to seal the panel. This is to prevent any moisture penetrating down behind the lining. Special attention should be paid to the top and bottom of the internal corner and anti-fracture membrane areas.

Note: Run silicone down the internal corner for water proofing

Repairing Akril Gloss Panel FINE SCRATCHES
Maintaining Akril
Fine scratches can be buffed out with 3M Trizact Spot Finishing or a commonly available micro-polish such as Brasso. Use a clean soft cloth and always polish in a circular motion. Remove polish residue with warm water immediately.
Wash with mild soap or detergent, using plenty of warm water. Dry with a soft cloth or chamois. Grease, oil or tar can be removed with Methylated Spirits or Isopropyl Alcohol. Solvent residue should be removed by washing immediately.
DEEPER SCRATCHES
When the surface is rough, for instance cut edge by saw, plane and/or sand the surface to smooth out the surface.
Do Not Use: scouring compounds, steel wool, harsh scrubbing brushes, chloroform, acetone, benzene, toluene, xylene, dichloromethane, amyl acetate, glacial acetate acid, butyl alcohol, butyl acetate, cellusolve, cresols/phenols, ethyl acetate, chlorinated solvents, halogenated solvents, methyl alcohol, sulphuric acid, dilute acids, MEK methyl ethyl ketone (PVC pipe glue).
When sanding, use water resistance paper #600~#1500 in graduation from coarse to fine. Finish by polishing with abradant using a soft cloth. Finishing can be done by buffing. Buffing speed is approximately 1,100~1,400 r.p.m. (buff speed should be 700~1,500m/min.) and abradant is jointly used. If buffing speed is too high or if buffing is placed at one part, sticking or inner stress can be generated by heat.
Architectural Specification
Scratch is eliminated according to its depth, by sanding and buffing or by buffing alone.

Akril Do’s & Dont’s Don t store panels in areas likely to be damaged. Don t store panels outside or areas that may get wet. Don t install in saunas or in steam rooms. Don t install onto loose, damp or dusty substrates. Don t attempt to nail Akril – it will split. Don t use big globs of silicone to pack out uneven surfaces. Always follow manufacturer s instructions. Don t use a bare finger to tool off excess silicone as this introduces bacteria that can cause mould. Don t use abrasive cleaners such as Jiff, or abrasive cleaning pads such as steel wool to clean Akril. Don t store panels on end (upright).
Do consider the impact of colour choice at design. Environments with harsh lighting will benefit from lighter colours in general. Do transport large quantities of panels flat and protected from movement and scratches. Akril is couriered nationwide in smaller quantities as two- panel packs, carefully wrapped in tough corrugated cardboard. Do measure your room and plan the panel/ join layout before beginning. Do check the substrate to be lined is clean, sound and dust free. Do test your method of cutting Akril to ensure a good clean cut, free of chipping. Do follow adhesive manufacturer s instructions. Do use continuous beads of silicone sealant in all joins, and behind all bulkhead fittings/ fascia plates when installing into a wet area. Do repair any minor surface damage promptly and in the manner described herein. Do clean Akril with mild detergent and warm water regularly to keep Akril looking as new.
