Woyzeck in Winter is an electrifying fusion of two masterpieces: Büchner’s Woyzeck and Schubert’s Winterreise. Woyzeck and Winterreise were written within ten years of each other – the twenty–four songs of Winterreise in 1827, the twenty–four scenes of the play in 1836 – by troubled geniuses, both of whom died young. Thrillingly reimagined by Conall Morrison and a leading creative team, this visually stunning new production, sung in English, promises to be a Festival highlight. Starring Patrick O’Kane as Woyzeck and Camille O’Sullivan as Marie, the music will be played live at each performance by musical director Conor Linehan, and the stellar Irish cast also includes Stephen Brennan, Peter Coonan, Susannah De Wrixon, Rosaleen Linehan, Barry McGovern, Rory Nolan and Shane O’Reilly. Following the sensational success of their first opera, The Last Hotel, Donnacha Dennehy and Enda Walsh join forces once again on an explosive new production. One of Ireland’s leading actors, Aaron Monaghan, plays The Second Violinist. He is joined by singers Máire Flavin, Sharon Carty and Benedict Nelson, together with a 16–strong chorus, and Crash Ensemble, the group founded by Dennehy and described by the New York Times as ‘the Irish new–music band that plays with the energy and spirit of a rock group’. Joined by the phenomenal creative team from The Last Hotel, Donnacha Dennehy’s music is infused with lingering echoes of the Renaissance works of Carlo Gesualdo, creating a sonorous backdrop for the haunting orchestrations and pulsating rhythms that drive the opera to its inexorable conclusion.

Two men meet for a pint in a Dublin pub. They chew the fat and set the world to rights. They talk about their wives, their kids, their kids’ pets, their football teams, life and death and what heaven might look like. Adapted from his blog and novel of the same name Two Pints, which attests to the comic genius of Roddy Doyle, is performed in a number of pubs in Galway City and county. Roddy Doyle is one of Ireland’s most prolific authors writing for both stage and screen in addition to many best–selling novels. He wrote the screenplays for The Snapper, The Van, Family, When Brendan Met Trudy and he co–wrote the screenplay for The Commitments, which he also later adapted for the stage. He won the Booker Prize in 1993, for Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha.

A man with a breaking memory tries to stick the pieces together and find some salvation. In a house that isn’t his house – in the bathroom of that house – and staring back from the bathroom’s mirror – is a man he no longer knows. Bathroom is the fourth in a series of theatre installations by Enda Walsh following on from Room 303, A Girl’s Bedroom and Kitchen. Enda Walsh’s recent work includes The Second Violinist, an opera with Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy which premieres at GIAF 2017; Lazarus written with David Bowie; Arlington the play, and three short texts presented as Rooms, which tour to New York in May 2017.

Audiences are invited to take part in a spectacular architectural event devised by the French artist Olivier Grossetête. Over four days, thousands of cardboard boxes will be transformed into the building blocks of a democratically assembled building, created solely through human power and collective endeavour. The public watches in amazement and play a formative role as an extraordinary new structure rises from the ground. Once the structure is completed and admired, the audience join forces in a massive celebratory demolition as the cardboard building comes tumbling down. The People Build has captured the imagination the world over from Australia to South America and Asia to Europe.

Roving eyes are watching you; they watch your every move. Close–Act’s illuminated and mysterious skeletal i–Puppets are from another time and place. A parade of drummers and percussionists meander through the city streets from the Spanish Arch to Eyre Square beating their infectious rhythms through the heart of medieval Galway. The main creative force behind some of the most cherished recordings in rock history, The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson presents the 50th anniversary celebration tour and the final performance of Pet Sounds live at the Absolut Big Top. Performing with special guests Al Jardine, Blondie Chaplin and a 15–piece band, the album will be performed in its entirety followed by many of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys’ greatest hits. Recorded in 1966, Pet Sounds is considered to be one of the greatest albums ever made, rivalling only The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band with Wilson rewriting the rules of what a record could be. The album entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and tops MOJO magazine’s ‘Greatest Albums of All Time’. Altan ‘The hottest group in the Celtic realm…’ THE BOSTON GLOBE

The New Orleans Swamp Donkeys are an extremely versatile group of young musicians who play traditional and modern jazz, blues and original music all heavily influenced by New Orleans–derived styles. Described as early jazz with a modern twist these are passionate musicians who are inspired by the feel of a hot 1910’s New Orleans speakeasy. Their sound is enormously accessible with their frontman, the Louis Armstrong–sounding, soulful and sweet James Williams fronting a very hot band that is resolutely New Orleans jazz.

The Dublin Gospel Choir continue to amaze audiences all over Europe with a brilliantly adaptable repertoire of songs. They also spread considerable joy!

The West Cork Ukulele Orchestra is a nine–piece juggernaut of musical excess, brought together for one purpose: to rock the planet, ukulele–style! Armed only with their tiny ukuleles and a wall of harmonies, they perform playful versions of classic pop songs, with arrangements that are as inventive as they are irreverent.

The bedrock of Beoga’s sound lies firmly within the Irish tradition, with an added hint of blues and a raunchy New Orleans vibe. Beoga’s popularity continues to flourish as they captivate audiences on a global scale. In 2017 they collaborated on two songs with Ed Sheeran on his album Divide, firmly placing them in the mainstream spotlight.

In June 1982, a small group of singers got together in the then UCG to start a new choir in Galway. Their musical focus was ranged from the Renaissance to contemporary Irish composers. This was the start of Cois Cladaigh. This Festival concert celebrates their 35th year together as one of Ireland’s leading choral groups. The programme will include Renaissance music and contemporary acapella.

Loah, aka Sallay Matu Garnett, is a classically trained singer songwriter of Sierra Leonean and Irish origin who has been hailed for her unique blend of folk and soul, which she calls ‘Artsoul’. Loah co–wrote the song Someone New with Hozier for which they jointly won a BMI songwriting award. Her West–African–influenced sound is a truly unique vocal mix of soul, jazz, gospel and pop. GIAF premieres four newly commissioned art works by John Gerrard one of Ireland’s most celebrated international artists. Featuring the rivers Amazon, Danube, Nile and Yangtze, each computer simulation introduces a portrait of a small section of each river, integrating the buildings and flora on the riverbanks as visible reflections. At the centre of the scene is a gasoline spill – accurately refracting the light to create a vivid prismatic field, endlessly changing shape over time. The roll of the river creates a flag–like form, which the artist sees as a precise political representation of contemporary conditions. As is typical with Gerrard’s work, the scenes are non durational, instead they are rendered live to unfold over the course of an annual solar cycle, with each Flag keyed to its particular local time. Ana Maria Pacheco looks fearlessly into the dark heart of humanity and seeks out the light. This powerful solo exhibition by the Brazilian–born artist features major works that have rightly brought her international critical and popular acclaim. Ana Maria Pacheco is a painter, sculptor and printmaker who was born in Brazil in 1943 and has lived in England since 1973. The first non–European associate artist of the National Gallery, London, Pacheco’s nineteen figure installation Dark Night of the Soul [pictured here] was inspired by her time in residence there. Pacheco encourages the viewer to get close to her figures and exploits the respective scale of each to challenge the audience’s physical and moral equilibrium. Her work deals with issues of control and the exercise of power, drawing upon the tensions between the old world of Europe and the new world of her Brazilian birth and looks unflinchingly upon the perilous world we encounter.

Backstage at the Festival 19 July, 2pm Gallery talk with the artist giaf.ie/ailbhenibhriain Séan Cotter, Gary Robinson and Thomas Brezing examine the use of language, literature and text in the visual realm with all three artists paying homage to words and language in their work. For Brezing, words come before the works begin, they are the starting point in the incubating process; Robinson uses overheard conversations which he moulds and moves from word to visual, while Cotter works with the written word directly applied to paper and canvas, addressing memories and thoughts that form as his work evolves.

Ailbhe Ní Bhriain is a Cork–based artist who works with film and photography. The photographic series Inscriptions combines imagery from a number of different sources, referencing museum artefacts, expansive landscapes and studio debris. The work takes its starting point from a text by Samuel Quiccheberg entitled Inscriptions of the Immense Theatre. This is the earliest published text on museology and outlines the methods for the collection and categorisation of objects, images and artefacts from across the world.

John Beard’s version of The Raft of the Medusa allows one to comprehend the Romantic grandeur and powerful beauty of the great masterpiece by Theodore Géricault which hangs in the Louvre, Paris. Géricault’s painting depicts the horrifying fate of sailors dying on a raft after the shipwreck of the French frigate Medusa off the West African coast 200 years ago, in July 1816. For GIAF 2017 the artist is creating a second much darker, life–size mirrored version of the work which will hang, at a distance of 30 meters, opposite his painting After The Raft of the Medusa. The installation of both of Beard’s enormous works evokes questions of the viewer about aspects of reality, illusion, imagination and memory. #GIAF17

Artistic Director of the Shakespeare Globe, London, Emma Rice is one of the world’s most visionary theatre directors. The former joint artistic director of Kneehigh Theatre for 10 years, her many credits for Kneehigh include the legendary productions of The Red Shoes, The Wild Bride, Brief Encounter and Tristan & Yseult which is playing at the Town Hall Theatre as part of this year’s Festival. 35 year–old Syrian architect and mother of two, Marwa Al–Sabouni was born in Homs, and has a PhD in Islamic Architecture. Despite the destruction of large parts of her city, she has remained in Homs with her husband and children throughout the war. In her recent book The Battle for Home, she explores the role architecture and the built environment play in whether a community crumbles or comes together, and she offers insights on how her country [and a much– needed sense of identity] should be rebuilt so that it will not happen again. Join us for an intimate conversation with special guests including actor and singer Camille O’Sullivan and former Noah and the Whale frontman Charlie Fink as they discuss their favourite albums and what they stir within them; fun, heartbreak and revolution. Full programme announced 19 June.

Druid Debuts staged readings offer the chance to experience work fresh off the page and to share an open discussion with writer and cast. They are a chance to see and shape something new and daring. Many readings have gone on to full productions including last year’s Helen and I by Meadhbh McHugh [Druid Debut 2014]. You never know what you’ll see. Druid Debut titles will be announced online in June.

A rehearsed reading and talk with the original Punchbag Theatre cast of the 1992 Edinburgh award–winning production of Eclipsed. The world premiere of Patricia Burke–Brogan’s groundbreaking play took place 25 years ago. The story of five penitent women in a Magdalene laundry shone a spotlight on a dark corner of a Catholic Ireland. Following the recent Tuam Mother and Baby Home revelations Eclipsed remains as powerful and relevant today.
