Least like the Other Searching for Rosemary Kennedy
music by Brian Irvine directed by Netia Jones Irish National Opera Orchestra conducted by Fergus Sheil cast includes Naomi Louisa O’Connell, Stephanie Dufresne and Ronan Leahy
‘building new audiences for opera with its adventurous spirit… INO is achieving something special’ JOURNAL OF MUSIC
An explosive and thought–provoking work of experimental music theatre. It traces events in the life of Rosemary, eldest daughter of Joe and Rose Kennedy, sister of JFK, using heavily redacted materials from the archives, and only recently pieced together by biographers and academics. The events in Rosemary’s difficult life leading up to her disastrous lobotomy at the age of 23 by the ‘kings of lobotomy’, Walter Freeman and James Watts, create an exploration of definitions of intelligence, expectations of gender, medical showmanship, patriarchy, the impact of the media and the demands of this extraordinary family. Rosemary’s life creates a portrait of America in the 1940s and 1950s. It is a picture that is as relevant today as it was then.

Dead Dog in a Suitcase [and other love songs] by Carl Grose music by Charles Hazlewood directed by Mike Shepherd
‘Mayor Goodman has been assassinated. And so has his dog. Macheath the contract killer is dangerously on the loose. What the HELL is the world coming to?’ Following their triumphant GIAF debut in 2017 with Tristan & Yseult, Kneehigh are back with their theatrical tour–de– force Dead Dog in a Suitcase [and other love songs] based on John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera. Kneehigh’s wild reinvention of this classic musical satire is busting with wit, wonder and weirdness. Using their legendary mix of puppetry, physical theatre and live music, the extraordinary cast of actor–musicians shoot, hoot and shimmy their way through this timeless story of power and lies in this trail–blazing and much celebrated production.

Epiphany
a new play by Brian Watkins directed by Garry Hynes cast includes: Grace Byers, Bill Irwin, Kate Kennedy, Julia McDermott, Aaron Monaghan, Marie Mullen, Rory Nolan and Marty Rea
‘And it all clicked, like my insides were parts of a puzzle… And it got me thinking, well how on earth does a holiday die?’ Snow falls softly on an uncanny evening. In an old city house, adrift in a modern world, a cheery host gathers a group of friends to try and reignite a forgotten tradition. But when the guest of honour, Gabriel, is unusually late, the participants find themselves unmoored and craving answers. And there just might not be enough wine, or goose, or time, to fend off some long–neglected anxieties that haunt their souls. 2019 is Druid’s year of new writing with all work being world premieres by living writers. As part of GIAF 2019, Druid presents Epiphany, and three Druid Debuts.

Now is the Time to Say Nothing is an interactive immersive video installation exploring the role of screens in observing global conflict. Using video and immersive sound, it follows the real story of Syrian artist Reem Karssli as she captures her daily experience of the Syrian conflict on camera. We see what emerges when she is contacted by a group of teenagers from the UK who want to see beyond the footage they’ve watched on their TVs. Together they co–author an experience which attempts to connect audiences to the human story behind the news. Created over four years, following Reem into an exile which forces her to leave her camera behind, Now is the Time to Say Nothing is an intimate exploration of what it means to stay connected to each other and of what happens when war and the need for survival get in the way.

Based on extensive interviews following the 2014 shooting of black teenager Michael Brown by white police officer Darren Wilson, this tour–de– force show gives voice to a community haunted by injustice and a country yearning for change. Awarded a Critic’s Pick by The New York Times and hailed as ‘a must see show that will have a profound effect on everyone who views it’ by Broadway World, Until The Flood explores the dark forces of American history, race and politics that exploded in the streets of Ferguson, Missouri and sent shock waves across the nation. Pulitzer Prize nominee Dael Orlandersmith [Yellowman, Forever, The Gimmick] brings the voices and emotions of the people who lived through these raw events to the stage.

‘Everything meets there. Anord. Abandoned by their mother at a young age and left in their teens to fend for themselves by their troubled father, the women have created their own emotional ecosystem. While Caireen embraces motherhood Fea struggles as she watches the boy grow in the likeness of his father whose body lies buried beneath the hawthorn tree. Cleft — a visceral story of one family’s unrelenting will to survive — and ultimately to make choices based on instinct. The Creative Team also includes Zia Bergin–Holly and Carl Kennedy.

Lisa O’Neill is an Irish songwriter like no other. Her roots may be sourced in folk and traditional music but her work opens up a landscape beyond any settled sense of genre. Her work is filled with tension and emotion, contextualizing themes of love, loss, heartache and sorrow today through referencing tales from the past with beauty, honesty and defiance. Junior Brother is an Irish alt folk singer playing sometimes humorous and sometimes heady tunes. Strange stories, poetic and arcane, unfold with reckless abandon upon an idiosyncratic guitar and foot tambourine accompaniment.

Tinariwen ‘great soul and prowess’ THE GUARDIAN
For Grammy–winning Saharan blues band Tinariwen, the desert is their home, and their hypnotic and electrifying guitar rock reflects complex realities of their base in northwest Africa. Founded in the 1980s in Tureg camps in Libya and exposed to western music these poet–guitarists and soul rebels deliver songs imbued with aching beauty and lonesome poetry. Their music expresses the aspirations of their people, the Kel Tamashek or ‘Touareg’ of the southern Sahara desert. Their music was bootlegged and traded around the region, earning them a devout following and after travelling for ten years you can now join these world soldiers as they make a welcome return to the Festival for a night of achingly beautiful desert rock.

In The Flesh is an enthralling exhibition by one of Australia’s most exciting and important contemporary sculptors, Sam Jinks. The exhibition, which includes new and existing work, explores the themes of intimacy, empathy, alienation, mortality and acceptance. The work of Sam Jinks draws on our shared fascination with the human figure, a fascination that has persisted through the history of Western sculpture. His hyper–realistic representations of the body, constructed from clay casts, poured silicone, fibreglass, resin and human hair, reflect the impermanence of life and the body’s fragility, while simultaneously capturing the intimacy, strength, empathy and vulnerability which defines us. The viewer becomes suspended in an intense moment of intimacy with the work, a moment that cannot ordinarily be achieved amongst strangers. As we stare at the figures frozen in states of vulnerability, be it babyhood, old age or quiet contemplation, we glimpse our own vulnerabilities reflected back.

After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2014, she established Annlin Chao Studio, working to extend the boundaries between art, animation, and moving images. Physically and mentally, human beings exist in a two– paralleled world. Because we are so concentrated on disguising reality rather than being aware of our authentic selves, this true world exists undercover. In her exhibition The Parallel Mind, Annlin Chao explores three different mindsets, disclosing secret stories behind the surface. Which one is real, which one is surreal? Without dialogues, there are no solid answers, only silent thoughts drifting in the space. Supported by the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan.
