CHILDREN'S WORKSHOP: Celtic Design Easter Eggs

Join storyteller Rab Swannock Fulton for fun tales for all the family, and afterwards use your imaginations to create your own stories.

Historically, Galway City and the Claddagh Village were great attractions for artists and travel writers. Join artist and motivational tutor Mark D. Smith (BA Hons.) as he leads a class inspired by images of old Galway. All materials will be provided.

Join artist Sinéad McKiernan in using Celtic designs and spirals to decorate your eggs with paint. All materials provided.

Join Brendan McGowan of Galway City Museum to learn about some of the folklore and traditions associated with St. Brigid and her feast day, and afterwards have a go at making some of the various types of Brigid's crosses. Age: 9+

Visit the Jack B. Yeats exhibition with artist Sinéad McKiernan and afterwards, inspired by the colour and lines of the Yeats paintings, create a colourful piece of felt.

TALK: City of the Tribes Galway is known as the "City of the Tribes". Join author Adrian Martyn to find out about these tribes and why the city is named in their honour. Age 12+

Join Brendan McGowan of Galway City Museum to learn about some of the folklore and traditions associated with St. Brigid and her feast day, and afterwards have a go at making some of the various types of Brigid's crosses.

Galway City Museum is filled with visually impressive and quirky artefacts relating to the history of the city. Join artist and motivational tutor Mark D. Smith (BA Hons.) as he leads a class in which you observe and sketch your favourite objects. All materials will be provided.

DOCUMENTARY FILM: Not Fade Away (2004)

Tourist promotional film from the 1950s on the attractions of Galway in all of its glamour. Beneath the statue of O'Conaire in the Square, two old men sit and talk. The narration comments: "In Irish leisurely conversation is an everyday art. This wisdom of contentment is a characteristic of the Irish. BEALTAINE WORKSHOP: Telling Tales Do you have a Galway memory, story or folktale to share? Now is the chance to preserve your legacy in writing and tell your story in your own words. Whether you want to share your own life experiences or record your local or family history, this four-week reminiscence writing workshop led by writer and facilitator Pete Mullineaux will help you get started. No previous writing experience required.

CRAFT WORKSHOP: Maritime Galway… All Sewn Up Inspired by the museum's quayside location and its Galway Hooker centrepiece, join artist Sinéad McKiernan to make a textile piece using sewing machines and hand embroidery with nets, threads, ropes and fabric. Machines and material provided. Adult

In May 1909, Albert Kahn, millionaire French banker and philanthropist, embarked on an ambitious project to create a colour photographic record of, and for, the peoples of the world. Join Fidelma Mullane as she recounts the story of French photographers Mademoiselles Mespoulet and Mignon and their visit to Galway City, the Claddagh, Roscam, Spiddal, and Headford in 1913.

Join local archaeologist Anne Carey to learn the skills needed to become a junior archaeologist. Afterwards visit the museum’s archaeology displays to see some of the exciting finds unearthed in the city.

TALK: The Blakes... bloodier than the 'Bloody Bodkins' The 'Positive' Blakes frequently resorted to violence and subterfuge, all but exterminating the Athy family in a feud, and producing one of the most notorious spies in the Elizabethan secret service. Join author Adrian Martyn to learn more about the “Tribes of Galway” with a special focus on this intriguing family. Age 12+

ILLUSTRATED TALK: Galway's Forgotten Distilleries

The Columban Fathers Present President Kennedy in Ireland was produced by the Columban Fathers shows the president visiting Dublin, Wexford, Cork, Galway, and Limerick, with excerpts from his speeches. There were several films made of the Kennedy visit, but this was the only professional film shot in colour. Courtesy of the Irish Film Institute.

There were several whiskey distilleries in nineteenth-century Galway. Join Mick Quinn as he explores the topic of Galway's forgotten distilleries, with a special focus on Persse's at Nun's Island. Age 12+

GALLERY ART CLASS: Family Drawing Session

TALK: The Lynchs... Galway's First Tribe

ILLUSTRATED TALK: JFK in Galway

Drawing Day was initiated by the National Gallery of Ireland to provide an opportunity for people of all ages to try their hand at drawing under the guidance of professional tutors. Celebrate Drawing Day 2013 at Galway City Museum by taking part in our family drawing session led by local artist Bernadine Burke.

The 'Proud' Lynchs were the first of the Tribes of Galway and one of the most influential, giving the town 84 mayors – entrepreneurs, fraudsters, explorers and slaves – between 1484 and 1654. Join author Adrian Martyn to learn more about the “Tribes of Galway” with a special focus on this illustrious family.

On Saturday 29th June 1963, US President John F. Kennedy visited Galway as part of a four day trip to Ireland. Join Brendan McGowan of Galway City Museum as he discusses the background to the president's visit and enjoy some contemporary photographs and film footage.
