Since its inception in 2011, NOFW has been setting the stage for style along the Gulf Coast by ushering in the Southern region’s premier fashion tastemakers. The weeklong fashion fete establishes a strong awareness of local designers, models and beauty artisans. It has become an important contributor to the New Orleans culture and is celebrated in conjunction with the city’s legendary cuisine, music, art, and film. #NOFW8 is partnering with New Orleans Entrepreneur Week (NOEW) to add a fashion pitch component to the Top Design Competition. This is a natural alliance as fashion designers are creative individuals with a instinctive entrepreneurial spirit. The 10 finalists will have the opportunity to compete their collections on the NOFW runway, as well as further their business goals by taking their concept from the runway to retail. 2017 top design winner: haute holaday Using unconventional materials, touchable textiles and life experiences as her inspiration, Mimi Holaday designs cuttingedge fashions that make everyone do a double take of her haute styles. Think Gatsby meets gypsy — this contemporary collection gives a feeling rich in culture, modern style and silhouettes that celebrate the female curves. Holaday, a spirited New Orleans native with an innate sense of style, combines sequins, tassels, Venetian lace and vinyl to create daring fashions for those who don’t want to have a cookie-cutter style. Mimi Holaday was crowned New Orleans Fashion Week Top Designer 2017. Her collection swept away both the judges and audience by also winning the Yelp People’s Choice award. When asked how she felt about winning NOFW’s Top Design Competition, she said; “EPIC! Best feeling in the world. Hard work and then big reward made all the stress and worrying worth it!” In the last year Holaday has been working strategically in building her brand by launching a new website (halomimi.com), hosting popup boutiques from New Orleans to New York, and introduced a mobile-boutique one of the newest trends to reaching one’s target market. Mimi Holaday will present her collection on the runway Friday, March 23. Doors 5:30 pm, Runway 7:00 pm. Photographers: Mike Smith, Tom Havard and Christina Weeks

it’s going to be an evolution . . . of fashion! new orleans fashion week celebrates 300 years of fashion

luxe marketplace The LUXE Marketplace is within NOFW and is intended to build brand awareness and cultivate relationships between designers, boutiques, and consumers. It unites and inspires the fashion community by providing guests an opportunity to discover and shop new designers, boutiques, and revisit favorites.

From the regal bustier period of Marie Antoinette to the seersucker suits of the southern gentlemen, NOFW takes you on a journey through the style eras of New Orleans, adding a touch of panache to the city’s Tricentennial celebration. The “Evolution of New Orleans Fashion Week” is a reflection of fashion and the many people and places contributing to the 300 years of New Orleans couture influencing our region and the world alike. No doubt New Orleans rightfully takes pride in the role that its elegant gowns, highend lace, and fine linen fabric have played in evolving its diverse culture.

The New Orleans Jazz Marketplace will host this special edition to NOFW on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 from 7:00-10:00 pm. The evening will include stylized presentations recognizing the history and evolution of New Orleans fashion. As well as pay homage to the city’s fashion leaders, recognize iconic eras and landmarks, and showcase select fashions from some of the most memorable New Orleans’ moments. “To not include fashion would be a missed opportunity to shine the spotlight on a most relevant and significant facet of the history and culture of our city,” said Tracee Dundas.

“The fashion evolution reflects the days when shopping on Canal Street was a grand “dress up” occasion and getting a new outfit from department stores such as Godchaux's and Kraus were highly anticipated rights of passage; to continued contributions from hallmark family fashion institutions like the Rubenstein's, Meyer's the Hatter and Mignon Faget that makes New Orleans uniquely our own.” The cultural combination of history and fashion will create a walk down memory lane for some, an educational moment for others, but a celebratory evening for all.

2018 top designer competition: designer showdown When New Orleans Fashion week rolls out (March 16-24), fashion aficionados will be eager to see a designer showdown consisting of an amazing group of emerging designers. This elite group of 10 talented designers will present their collection in front of a panel of judges composed of fashion professionals and an audience of fashion influencers, friends, fans, media and buyers. For most of these designers it is the first time showing their collection on a platform of this caliber. For everyone this has been a yearlong process filled with anticipation, drawing from various inspirations, sketching, cutting, sewing, editing, re-sewing and going back to the drawing board many times. It is this creative process that fuels a designer at the prospect of showing their collection on the runway. And, all would agree that the journey to reach this juncture is one in which they are fully committed. Every designer lives for the adrenaline rush they fell as they see their collection walk down the runway. It solidifies the fact that putting all of their blood, sweat, and tears into their collection is 100 percent worth it.

Top 10 Finalists: Jarred Henry, Nadine Hancock, Candis Cullison, Amaya Cannon, Jeanne-Claire Benton, Courtney Childs, Jarithza Carlson, Jacob Burkett, Victoria Henley, Jada Hunger. Not pictured: Jacob Burkett, Victoria Henley, Jada Hunger Photogrpaher: Trent Dardar As New Orleans Fashion Week enters its eighth season, its Top Design Competition has become one of the signature events. Over the years the TDC has been recognized as a breakout opportunity for emerging designers as well as a stepping stone that has been instrumental in taking a designer’s career to the next level. From local boutiques picking up a designer’s line to invitations to show at other fashion weeks and castings on Project Runway, New Orleans Fashion Week has played a significant role in the next chapter of many Southern designers. This season will be no different as NOFW has partnered with New Orleans Entrepreneur Week to add a fashion pitch component to the TDC event. This partnership will help to further propel the designers as they strive to build their brand into a thriving business. Designers are finding function and success in showing their wares on New Orleans Fashion Week’s runway, realizing that the concrete pavement of New York is not the only route to success. The Monastery will be the backdrop for NOFW’s runway fashions shows with the Top Design Competition (March 22) kicking off the series. No doubt these designers will bring their A Game to the catwalk as they vie for the crown of being named NOFW’s Top Designer—a title that comes with an impressive prize package, including Retail Placement in Hemline Metairie Rd., Brother’s Project Runway Sewing Machine from AllBrands. com, Privy Label Consultation, Gustavo Escenelle Photo Shoot, Midori Makeup Artistry Service, Cash Award from Lot 1701, Feature in New Orleans Living, & NOFW9 Feature Designer.
