After surviving record temperature highs this summer, it’s safe to say that everyone is ready to embrace a new season. The Adore team has been doing just that as we planned out the rest of our content for 2023. This fall will bring new features, an epic holiday issue (yes, we’re already thinking about that…), and so much more.

This issue opens with a feature on LAKAN, a new made-tomeasure brand by New Orleans native and designer Lakan Golden. The waste-free studio is located in the Lower Garden District and is an exciting addition to the local fashion landscape. More style content follows with our team’s take on what to wear to fall weddings, brunches with friends, parties across town, and

P.S.

the office. A gorgeous home designed by Whitney Wilkinson, a story on all things neutral, a sweet wedding that took place at the historic Latrobe’s on Royal, and our first Shop Dog duo can also be found in this edition.

I also wanted to note that this is Adore’s 50th issue — a special thank you to everyone that has helped shape this publication along the way, all our loyal readers, and our amazing advertisers. In between issues, stay connected with us on all our social media platforms (we are @nolaadore across the board) and sign up for our weekly newsletter delivered straight to your inbox. Head to our newly designed website (nolaadore.com) to get on the list. See you next month!

Thank you to everyone who shared our A-List issue! The feedback was astounding, and we loved working with these 15 noteworthy New Orleanians. If you missed the issue, head to our website to browse the digital edition.

YOURSELFSuit

Quality over quantity is the name of the game at LAKAN, a new made-to-measure brand founded by Lakan Golden. After working in the fashion industry in New York then pivoting to bespoke menswear in Dallas, the designer felt the call to create more feminine pieces that can be worn for decades to come. With a focus on fit and form, the craftsmanship and detail behind her eponymous collection is intentional and aims to help women dress effortlessly. Back in her hometown, she debuted her first pre-designed silhouettes (which include suits, jackets, trousers, vested shells, skirts, and shirts) and opened her Lower Garden District studio for in-person consultations and fittings.

“I believe there is a subtle artform woven into the energy and thoughtfulness it takes to put yourself together,” Lakan said. “There is an air of confidence that can be created by introducing an element of routine and uniformity in your wardrobe. This is why suiting for women will remain in

style forever. A tailored look will always read polished and chic transcending time and place.”

For such a premium and specialized product, the ordering process is quite simple. During the initial appointment, clients meet the designer to pick the pieces that will complement their needs and lifestyle. With Lakan’s guidance, the fit, fabrics, silhouettes, and any customizations will be finalized (virtual fittings and consultations are also available). Fabrics are ordered and measurements are sent to the inhouse New York-based production team. The product is created almost entirely by hand within a few weeks by a team of highly skilled master tailors. The garments arrive back in New Orleans for a final fitting, and any additional tailoring is finished locally before heading to their forever home.

“There is a wide range of fabrications, colors, patterns, and textures to explore with a well-assorted suiting wardrobe,” she explains. “Choosing pieces that will carry you from the office to a cozy fall dinner or even a formal affair is such a cool thing, as is building on ways to deconstruct and curate the pieces overtime. For example, layering a tailored jacket with a chunky knit and boot for a more casual outing with friends or wearing a full 2- or 3-piece and dressing up the whole look with a statement heel and jewelry for a more formal affair.”

“I target a female clientele with entrepreneurial spirit and am passionate about guiding them toward a more naturally cultivated style identity and wardrobe that are not designed, fit, and produced for the masses. I think it is so cool to teach and watch how they build on new ways to deconstruct and curate their same pieces to carry them through all of their ambitious and casual pursuits of life.”

8 ADORE • September 2023

The designer mainly sources fabrics from Europe. “For custom pieces, we use a lot of Loro Piana and Holland & Sherry wool, linens, and cashmeres. We have several other top-tier partners around Northern Europe as well as Japan.” For the upcoming fall collection, expect to see dreamy Italian camel hair and Nappa leather pop up throughout.

While suiting has been around for ages, LAKAN’s model offers a take on what sustainable fashion can look like. “I do believe consumers are consciously choosing higher quality over quantity, intentionally seeking out more timeless pieces that contribute to a stylistically long-lasting wardrobe. I have always felt passionate to guide my clients toward a more naturally cultivated style comprised of unique textures and colors that are most relatable to their individuality. This cannot be done by producing for the masses. By leading a madeto-measure business for women, I am able to produce a waste-free, low-impact environmental footprint, all while building out this tailored capsule of wardrobe for each unique figure and desire for specific color and seasonal palettes.”

Jackets start at $1,895, with custom starting at $2,495; custom trousers start at $1,295; and a range of other separates start at $495.

Lake Vista

GREEK REVIVAL

When one local couple found this 3,565-square-foot home in Lake Vista, they knew it was perfect for their family. However, while the house had great bones, it needed major updates to fit their needs. That’s when they turned to Whitney Wilkinson, founder and principal of Whitney Wilkinson Design Studio.

“This project was the largest I had taken on other than my own personal renovations,” Whitney

says. “The homeowners put a lot of trust in me, and I felt confident I could deliver as I had the support of a great contractor (Luiz Saviani of AHI) and an exceptional custom woodworker (Colin Keith of Sweet Bay Studios).”

The New Orleans-based designer selected everything from lighting and plumbing fixtures, custom window coverings and flooring, to a whole-home paint and wall-covering schedule — and everything in between.

ISLAND TIME

In the kitchen, Whitney reworked the island, taking it from a multilevel counter to a large counter-height island. The backsplash is from Stafford Tile & Stone; the island lighting is from Visual Comfort; and the barstools are by Serena & Lily.

NIFTY NOOK

These Thonet caned-back armchairs in smokey green leather from Sterling Provisions Acorn Studio (sourced through Merchant House) set the tone for the breakfast area. The custom banquette with a short, scalloped skirt is finished in an indoor/outdoor fabric by Perennials Fabrics.

FAMILY FUN

The walls in the family room are painted in Pointing, while the bookcases are painted in Vert de Terre and the ceiling is painted in Pavilion Blue — all by Farrow & Ball. Whitney recovered the chairs from Consign Consign in fabric by Sister Parish.

SMART STORAGE

The butler’s pantry echoes nature with Farrow & Ball’s Lichen paint color. The classic pendant is from Dop Antiques.

PINK RETREAT

The homeowners’ main request was to take full advantage of the views of a park from the living room, kitchen, and primary suite. “[They] wanted classic and traditional but also young and fresh — a home that was thoughtfully designed and collected; equal parts interesting and inviting,” she says. “My role was to help them take risks but balance those risks with traditional time-tested design choices for core features like flooring, countertops and tile, and hardware.”

Following her clients’ wishes, Whitney found inspiration in nature. “The color palette was inspired by the view of the park outside of the main living area,” she says. “Because of the open concept, the downstairs was painted mostly in one color, Pointing by Farrow & Ball. We chose multiple different greens and blues to mimic the outdoor views.”

Overall, Whitney shares that the homeowners were incredibly conscientious about all of the details that make a house a home. “Good design, function, and beauty is truly a lifestyle lived here.”

In the primary bathroom, Whitney opted for a light shell-pink color (Opal by Benjamin Moore) reminiscent of a sunset. The vanity is custom-made; the bathtub is by Victoria + Albert; and the tile is from Stafford Tile & Stone.

GARDEN PARTY

The formal dining room has an English garden feel with bursts of color and pattern. The dining table and armoire are from Dop Antiques; the large-scale floral curtain pattern is Magnolia by GP & J Baker; and the chandelier is from Visual Comfort with shades by Pooky Lighting.

ENCHANTED ESCAPE

The wallpaper in the powder room, a funky take on a floral and fauna pattern, is by Ferrick Mason Textile and Wallpaper Design. The Dop Antiques mirror is flanked by sconces from Hudson Valley Lighting.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Whitney Wilkinson seamlessly delivers timeless design that is truly one-ofa-kind to each client. The designer’s wheelhouse includes everything from executing full-service interior design schemes to providing guidance on historic renovations and new builds. No matter the project, Whitney is sure to create an elevated yet comfortable environment. For more information, visit whitneywilkinson.com.

WORK FROM HOME

The office is richly colored in Inchyra Blue paint by Farrow & Ball. Whitney sourced the rug from Etsy, the desk from Chairish, and the wingback chair from Merchant House.

SLUMBER PARTY

The primary bedroom lacked storage, which Whitney solved by sourcing bedside chests from Consign Consign. The Duralee curtains by Robert Allen Design add a pop of color.

Corbin Carter and Michael Jones’ love story began in 2018 when the two decided to grab dinner in New York City after matching on Bumble. Sparks instantly flew, and the memorable first date ended with a spontaneous trip atop the Empire State Building to take in the city views.

Over the next three years, Corbin and Michael made it a priority to travel together, exploring 29 states and four countries. They had visited Louisiana numerous times, and after Corbin popped the question in September 2021, the couple knew Latrobe’s on Royal, the historic French Quarter venue, was the perfect place to tie the knot. “We knew we wanted to focus on three things: great food, a classic/cool-looking space, and a great party,” the couple shared. “We were able to thankfully achieve all three!”

Corbin and Michael relied on close friends during the preparation process, such as having Corbin’s sister design the invitations and Michael’s former colleagues Hien Nguyen and Kim Tran of Wink Design & Events take charge of the planning. The 200 guests who traveled from near and far enjoyed an entire weekend of festivities, commencing with a rehearsal dinner at Arnaud’s followed by welcome drinks at the Selina Catahoula rooftop bar.

When it came time to get ready for the big day, Corbin and Michael selected custom tuxedos with black lapels

Corbin chose a French blue tuxedo while Michael opted for dark green – both custom-made from FELLOW New Orleans.

“It’s so rare to be surrounded by people that mean so much to you...we both wish we could have spent a week or longer with our wonderful crew,” the couple shared.

To signify the changing of his last name and honor his alma mater, Michael wore a custom LSU jersey with “Carter” on the back while getting ready.

“My favorite part of the day was the first look! It’s when we first got to see each other on our special day and was a wonderful moment for us to have. There is so much energy on your wedding day — excitement and stress — and it can be overwhelming. But once I saw Corbin, I was ready to go and felt so much love and joy. I’ll remember that moment for the rest of my life and cherish that feeling I had.”

from FELLOW New Orleans — Corbin in French blue and Michael in dark green. Each groom had a mix of ten groomsmen and “groomsmaids” that wore ivory gowns and black tuxes to create a classic feel and allow the grooms’ colorful jackets to stand out. Despite a typical humid morning and mid-afternoon rain shower, the sky was crystal clear by the early evening, resulting in ideal wedding weather.

Latrobe’s held the romantic ceremony where each groom wrote and read his own vows. Corbin got a bit too excited, ending his vows with a kiss instead of waiting until after saying “I do.” A lively reception followed in the historic whisper dome with entertainment by NOLA Dukes Band, heartfelt speeches from members of the wedding party, and a delicious catered spread. “All of the food at Latrobe’s was exceptional. We ordered some traditional creole classics that were a big hit (boudin balls, crawfish spring rolls, and jambalaya), as well as a cornucopia of other food. The late-night Gruyère grilled cheeses and pommes frites were also a crowd favorite!”

Special touches included espresso martinis to keep guests caffeinated and cocktail napkins featuring the newlyweds’ miniGoldendoodle, Oliver. The celebration ended with a second line led by Kinfolk Brass Band as the procession waved personalized “Corbin + Michael” handkerchiefs.

Nina Garcia, who Corbin met in law school, has become a wonderful friend to the couple and officiated the wedding.

"Michael, Corbin, and the Wink team were a total joy to work with. It is always such an honor when clients entrust us with their wedding celebrations, and even more so when one of the honorees has worked in the New Orleans events industry!”

La Louisiane Bakery created the traditional almond cake, along with a four-tiered king cake decorated with mini-OU and LSU helmets to showcase the couple’s college football rivalry. The newlyweds ended the night by parading to Kinfolk Brass Band’s rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” as they crossed over Canal Street.

Shop Dogs Hilda & Hazel

As Scriptura celebrates its 28th anniversary this year, the Magazine Street shop continues to serve New Orleans and beyond with its unique skillset in design and production. From invitation suites to calling cards to personalized anything, the shop provides brides, grooms, debutantes, hosts, and more with custom and artful creations.

Owned by Margaret Jones, David Isganitis, and Sallie Mykris, Scriptura is a wonderful combination of the strengths and skills of each owner. Their favorite part about the business is working with a creative team that they have cultivated over the years. “We all contribute different talents and bring out the best in each other,” they shared. “We also love sharing milestone moments with our customers.”

The team also includes Hilda and Hazel, the rescue pups owned by Margaret and David (along with Harlow, their cat sibling that hangs back at home). The girls clock in Monday through Saturday and often take breaks for treats and

walks around the block. “Hilda is semi-retired and prefers to leave the socializing to Hazel,” the trio said. “Hazel takes her job as greeter very seriously. They are valued staff members that have their own customers who come to see them.”

At the shop, the sisters prefer to hang out and eat lunch with Wendy, their favorite team member. They also like to peer out onto Magazine Street from the window ledge and love to climb up the steep circular staircase that many humans would be nervous to attempt. When they aren’t working the sales floor or critiquing designs, Hilda and Hazel love to stroll in Audubon Park. Since there is a large age difference between the two, the dogs don’t play together that much. Although they have achieved détente, like any younger sister, Hazel likes to hassle Hilda by running around and under her.

During your next visit to Scriptura, be sure to say hello to the friendly duo, but don’t be fooled by their panhandling for food. According to mom and dad, they are professionals.
