Drag Brunch is every Saturday and Sunday at the Country Club
When planning a bachelorette party in New Orleans,
there’s no shortage of options for boozy Bourbon Street debauchery. But the city offers many other experiences beyond Bourbon that can be just as memorable — and just as boozy — with the bonus of getting you and your bride tribe out exploring new parts of the city. You may even pick up a new skill along the way.

Every Saturday and Sunday, a fabulous and unforgettable brunch awaits at the Country Club in the Bywater — with optional bottomless mimosas! — as drag queens put on a show while partygoers dine. Many bachelorette parties enjoy a show while indulging in crab cakes or fried green tomatoes and eggs along with the Bloody Mary bar. Reservations are accepted at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays but book up quickly, so you’ll want to get your reservation ASAP. To make it an all-day event, post-brunch, pay the $20 per person daily pool fee and enjoy the afternoon while continuing the party. The Country Club is at 634 Louisa St., (504) 945-0742; thecountryclubneworleans.com.

One of the perks in New Orleans is that it has year-round built-in fun with festivals and events. Plan your bachelorette party around one of the city’s many events with live, local music and guaranteed good food to boot. Highlights include French Quarter Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Buku Fest, Voodoo Fest, Satchmo Summer Fest, Beignet Fest, National Fried Chicken Fest — and of course, Mardi Gras. Visit neworleans.com/ things-to-do/festivals for a full list of festivals and remember to check on the pandemic safety guidelines and get vaccinated beforehand.

For a part workout class, part sexy dance routine, bring your babes to Awakenings studio for dance offerings — including burlesque and twerking lessons — with multiple poles that can accommodate large groups and events. The private pole and aerial party package includes an hour and 15-minute class and costs between $25-$30 per person, depending on the studio location. Guests will learn basic pole tricks and dance moves as well as how to climb the pole. Instructors also mix in games to make sure the guest of honor feels special. Bonus: For an extra charge, hire a “Hunkomania” scantily clad male dancer to join you in the studio. Having video footage gives couples something to look back on and remember for decades.
Bostock says. “I think for the future, it might end up being for more intimate weddings and elopements.” Korry Melton, with Bella Productions Wedding Films, says the pandemic resulted in videos being more important than ever. “Recent trends in videography have aligned with recent wedding trends due to the pandemic — smaller weddings and more focus on family and close friends,” Melton says.
New technology
Technology in wedding videography has dramatically improved over the last decade with 4K video and drone footage nearly standard offerings. “In 2007, everything was still standard definition, TVs were just getting to be widescreen and
high definition. Now we are into 4K which gives a better quality and higher pixels,” Bostock says. “During the pandemic, I spent time learning new equipment.” Your Day Production uses wireless microphones, multiple cameras to shoot several angles and camera stabilization accessories that keep equipment steady — even when the videographer is moving backwards shooting a couple coming down the aisle or running through a sparkler exit. “Drones were really big three to four years ago, but I don’t see people requesting them as much,” Bostock says. “It’s a cycle — something new will come out and then it’s a fad for a while, and then it slows down.” PAGE 13

churches have great Wi-Fi,” Bostock says. “For one wedding, the church’s Wi-Fi was intermittent, and I was trying to get on my mobile hotspot and there were so many people in the city that weekend, it was like being in the Superdome and trying to text someone a picture.” Livestreaming also drains a laptop’s battery, so it’s important to have a full charge or position the computer near an outlet when possible. “I remember one outdoor wedding, the computer battery was going down quickly and I moved my car and plugged the computer charger into my car,” Bostock says. As the city reopens to larger gatherings, fewer couples are requesting livestreaming services. “No one has booked me on it since the city opened up,”

Instagrammable music video-style highlight of a couple’s big day to coordinating a livestream of a ceremony, trends in wedding videography are constantly evolving. “The last five years is really when everyone wanted to have social media short clips,” says LaVina Bostock, a videographer and owner of Your Day Production, which has been in the business since 2007. Instagram highlight videos, which max out at one minute in length, are generally sent within two days following the event as a teaser for the forthcoming full-length video. Overall, New Orleans videographers say that more couples are choosing to add professional video footage of their wedding day. “I have definitely found that there’s an influx of people who want video now,” says Shainna Miles, owner of Silver Loop Studios, which has been in the business for 11 years. “Video was popular before, but nowhere near as popular compared to a wedding photographer, but now, that playing field is starting to level up due to how important and timeless videos are and having that memory for decades to come.” During the last year, local videographers added Zoom and livestreaming services for micro-weddings with a reduced number of guests. Livestreaming a ceremony is a tougher challenge than it appears. “The hardest part is the internet, because we cannot control the internet service and not all

While some trends in wedding videography come and go, the essence of the work has remained the same. “I am your eyes and ears on your wedding day, and I carry the importance of knowing that,” Miles says. “This footage gives you something to look back on and remember for decades. When you are filming the biggest day of a couple’s lives, it’s important to be locked in every moment.” And filming is just half the work. Editing the footage to create a wedding video with music and a story is its own cinematic feat. “I’m definitely a storyteller. My favorite aspect is taking these moments and turning them into a story,” Miles says. “I always tell people that photos are great, but a lot of times, you see an image and you don’t know what’s happening exactly. But with video, you get the full moment.” Bostock adds, “If I can get someone who has no connection to the bride and groom feel
emotion and make them tear up, then I have done my job — that’s my ultimate end goal. Also, I love the dancing part. Everyone is so happy on that day.” Melton says that with smaller weddings over the last year, videography has focused much more on the couples. “While technology keeps advancing and allowing easier access to drones and 4K video, attention has really shifted back to how meaningful the day is,” Melton says. Today, videographers are back to work with weddings on the books nearly every weekend. Their work has only increased with rescheduled weddings on top of new bookings. “We’re back on a full schedule for this year and 2022 is picking up,” Bostock says. “During Covid, it was not as long of a day, with micro-weddings having everything done in three to four hours. Now, we’re back to larger weddings that are eight hours from start to finish. Everyone in the industry feels really excited.”

Not only has the way people eat changed, but what is served at events has also shifted. Batiste said many of her clients have requested healthier, plant-based options for their wedding events and it may be a response to the pandemic. “People associate veganism and eating plant-based with being healthier which is why being vegan is trendy right now. Many people have changed their diets and lifestyle to avoid some of those underlying conditions that can make COVID-19 even more severe,” she says.
However, Hall says they see a difference in menu based on where the couple is from geographically. “We listen to what our clients want but we find plant-based menus are regional. When couples come from the West Coast, they are more interested in more plant-based options as they have many friends who are vegetarian or vegan. Typically, West Coast couples have the vegetarian option planned out beforehand instead of it being chef’s choice,” said Hall. “For local clients, the menu is more seafood-focused with a mix of dishes including vegetables like Creole tomatoes and okra. When we do a seated dinner, we always have a vegetarian alternative,” she says.

has been changed by the pandemic, so too has how we share meals, especially celebratory ones. The COVID-19 pandemic shook the hospitality industry as weddings were postponed indefinitely or shifted to becoming smaller, more intimate events. “The process of [the pandemic] has evolved through the past year and a half, and we’ve had to evolve with it,” says Sarah Hall, president of Joel’s Catering and the Il Mercato events space. “In the beginning, we didn’t have any events, but when city guidelines allowed small events again, our weddings were maximum of 20 people.” Travel celebrity chef Gabrielle Batiste of Chef G. Adriane says many clients kept their reservations for smaller events, like bachelorette parties. For now, Batiste wonders if traditional sit-down dinners will be tabled in favor of options that allow guests to follow public health guidelines more easily and reduce the risk. “While it does depend on the person, I have served more buffet-style events than seated dinners,” she says of the past year and a half. “It seems that people are preferring to serve themselves — rather than to have servers.” Hall says that the food style at receptions has been a mix. If it’s an event with a buffet-style meal, as a precaution, the company has staffers serve food so there are not multiple people touching the same utensils. Hall says some couples decided to get married during the pandemic in smaller ceremonies with their closest family members — but now are hosting their receptions at event spaces.

To accommodate COVID-19 guidelines, many couples are opting for outdoor ceremonies and al fresco dining.
Hall encourages hosting events outside with cooling misters and tents for shade during the summer. “Now we have vaccinations, so a lot of the focus from our guests has been their guests getting fully vaccinated. We provide our staff with N-95 masks to wear the entire time during events. We are working to create a situation that’s comfortable for everyone but also safe,” said Hall. As social distancing is still encouraged, many people are opting to sit outdoors for their meals and events. Batiste says pandemic guidelines are easily adaptable to the new trend in New Orleans — food truck vendors. Tap Truck NOLA said they have seen a huge push for truck vendors at events this summer. “We have done more weddings now than before the pandemic began. Because we are completely self-contained and our truck doesn’t require electricity, we can pour anywhere. It’s convenient for weddings that may have downsized to a backyard and want a unique alcohol option,” says Lenaye Doussan, Tap Truck NOLA’s operating manager.

Bisques and other seafood dishes remain classics for New Orleans weddings.

When planning the menu for your fall wedding, Batiste said comfort food is the new fall trend as soups and bisques make their way back onto the menu. “The staples of fall seem to be pumpkin, squash, and sweet potato. Broth soups and warm dishes are favorite dinner items for the fall,” Batiste says. Hall of Joel’s and Il Mercato says the type of food for fall has been mixed as everyone was impacted by the pandemic differently. “Some people want to celebrate in luxury coming out of the pandemic since we’ve been all at home in our pajamas. Lobster, carte with caviar and toppings and fun cocktails are some of the different touches that make that type of event unique,” she says. “There are also some events that have a homey vibe including comfort foods. I think the fall will have a mix of elements of both.”
