WHAT TO WEAR

WHEN SAYING ‘I DO’ Bridal experts discuss trending fashions in wedding gowns B Y S U Z A N N E P F E F F E R L E TA F U R

The Lunella gown is boho-chic, from $1,500 to $1,900 at Pearl’s Place (3114 Severn Ave., Metairie, 504885-9213; www.pearlsplace.com).

what they will wear while sashaying down the aisle. Others flip through stacks of magazines and scan Pinterest, gathering bits of inspiration before they even visit a bridal boutique. Regardless which camp you fall into, if you’re on the out there. Take it from four local bridal boutique owners, who are well-versed in wedding fashions. Here’s what’s trending and why.

Mandy Wienhusen, owner of Town & Country Bridal, has witnessed the return of what she calls “ladylike dressing,” a movement inspired by recent royal brides. “Over the past few years, bridal gowns have been heavily influenced by couture Israeli labels showcasing risque designs and gowns that leave little to the imagination,” Wienhusen says. “It’s refreshing to experience the shift of New Orleans brides opting for more conservative, classic necklines and silhouettes.” The sophisticated gowns are made of structured fabrics, such as silk faille, Mikado silk and

crepe; and they tend to be a true white, rather than a champagne or a similar shade. Clean designs — from trumpet silhouettes to full, “twirl-worthy ball gowns” — are heavily requested, Wienhusen says. Melissa Estess, owner and co-founder of The Bridal Boutique by MaeMe, has seen sleek gowns grace the runway, but often they’re paired with a dramatic veil, cape or detachable train. She also says gowns with romantic details and floral lace patterns are in, along with sheer fabrics placed on plunging necklines, side cutouts and low-cut backs of dresses. “The back of a wedding gown has become as important as the front,” Estess says. “Show-stopping trains and back details have

become a staple in this season’s wedding dress lineup.” Fluttery “boho chic” styles also are enjoying popularity, says Courtney Schulman, co-owner of Pearl’s Place. She cited the Willowby collection by Watters — “a boutique favorite” as an example. Each dress from this line, she says, would look perfect paired with a bouquet of wildflowers or placed in a rustic venue illuminated by fairy lights. Estess says some brides have shown interest in the bohemian trend, but usually select more traditional gowns and add a touch of whimsy. “Fit and flare gowns still remain the most popular silhouette for our Southern brides,” Estess says, noting that ball gowns are making a comeback.

Graceful crepe gowns are having a moment, Schulman says. “There is a return to the timeless and classic gowns with no lace or beading — a look that I adore,” she says, pointing to the simple yet elegant dress that Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy wore on her wedding day. But still, there’s been an emergence of the “Romantic Rebel,” Wienhusen says,

The Eureka dress has a dramatic train, from $1,600 to $1,900 at The Bridal Boutique by MaeMe (3331 Severn Ave., Suite 102, Metairie, 504-266-2771; www.maemebridal.com).

explaining that brides are balancing traditional soft textures with unexpected elements. “One of our favorite looks is a sleek, crepe column gown paired with an edgy lace bomber jacket,” she says, adding that sweet details like pearls are still prevalent but are found unexpectedly paired with a plunging neckline and lace. Brides who want some color lean toward ivory, and many current wedding fashions feature a warmer or slightly darker lining that showcases an overlay of ivory lace and delicate beaded details, Estess says. Unconventional dress colors on the market include champagne, blush, almond and milky latte tones.

The March dress has romantic details, $2,600 to $2,900 at The Bridal Boutique by MaeMe.

When it comes to accoutrements, brides relish the idea of an overskirt because it offers the best of both worlds, Wienhusen says. “They can have a ball gown moment for their ceremony, but then transition into something more manageable for their reception by removing the overskirt,” she says. This season’s bridal jewelry has an organic feel

and features floral themes, Estess says, noting that gold and rose gold are now displayed alongside silver tones. Yvonne LaFleur, owner of Yvonne LaFleur clothing boutique, says earrings and bracelet pairings are in style, along with pearl and Swarovski crystal hair ornaments and glitzy beaded belts. “The right-now style is what makes the bride feel beautiful and fits her body and venue,” LaFleur says. For many New Orleans brides, that special something is a stunning cathedral veil. All the boutique owners say this adornment is a perennial favorite. “Cathedral veils with lace are beautiful, classic and timeless,” Schulman says. “They pull together a bride’s look and give everyone the goosebump moment.”

The sleek Megan gown has long sleeves and a low-cut back, starting at $2,500 at Town & Country Bridal).

FIVE HOT SPOTS FOR HONEYMOONS

Plus a few other travel tips THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER when it comes to a honeymoon destination. The options can become overwhelming, however, so we gathered some tips from travel agent Marie Lowe of Designer Travel Inc., who’s been in the business of booking dream vacations and romantic getaways for more than four decades. Timing is an important element when planning a honeymoon, she says. Some newlyweds want to leave the morning after the wedding, but others choose to unwind from the festivities before going on a trip. If you’re getting married on a holiday weekend, you can cut costs by delaying your honeymoon. To find the best deals on airfare, Lowe suggests looking for good rates in advance, but generally not more than six to nine months before the trip. “My recommendation is to not pick anything around a holiday,” she says. “It keeps the airfare down and it keeps the cost of accommodations lower, too.” She recommends taking direct flights when possible since the wedding planning, ceremony and other commitments may have sucked up much of the couple’s available days off work. Here are Lowe’s top five trending locations for honeymoons.

It takes a while to get there and the airfare can be costly, but once you arrive, Thailand proves it’s worth the trek, especially for those who want to lounge in the sun in proximity to turquoise waters. “Generally for honeymoons, people want to go lay on a beach somewhere,” Lowe says, and Thailand offers that and much more, including luxury accommodations available at a fraction of the price of other tropical locales.

Boasting some striking parallels to New Orleans, our northern Canadian sister city of Montreal is a cultural hotbed of delicious cuisine (hello, poutine!) and historic architecture. For those seeking Francophone experiences, the plane ride is much shorter (and less costly) than, say, a flight to Paris. It’s also an excellent option for couples with a busy work schedule who can’t take off a lot of time and don’t want to waste any of it on jet lag.

C A NC U N , M E X IC O Mexico, and Cancun in particular, is a popular and budget-friendly destination for newlyweds, Lowe says — and there are direct flights from New Orleans. Situated on the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is a hit with tourists for its numerous resorts and white-sand beaches. It’s also a good choice for couples who enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling.

This exotic city in the Arabian Desert on the Persian Gulf has a lot of ultramodern architecture folded in with older traditional buildings. There is a vibrant night scene, and the city is known for luxury shopping venues and accommodations, including resorts and theme parks on artificial islands offshore. “This place is incredible,” Lowe says, adding that couples easily can find five-star hotels for roughly $250 a night. Other draws include the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa; luxury shopping; and contemporary architecture.

An increasing number of newlyweds are favoring domestic travel, Lowe says, including Northern California, which can seem like a whole different world. San Francisco is a popular destination, she says, and its proximity to picturesque Napa Valley for wine tasting also is a major draw. She recommends spending a few days exploring San Francisco before heading into wine country. Another West Coast city that draws honeymooners is Seattle (you can book direct flights from New Orleans), which is great for both urban explorers and those who love the outdoors due to its location on Puget Sound near numerous islands and mountains.

WHILE PATRICK AND KOI BEARD WERE DATING, they included their pups in

as many outings as possible, and even threw birthday parties for them. So when the couple decided to tie the knot, they wanted to include Buddy and Bella — Labrador-pit bull siblings — in their nuptials. “They pretty much were our children, and we really wanted them to be part of our wedding,” Koi says. “They’ve always been very spoiled.” On July 19, 2014, Koi and Patrick were married on the lawn of St. Mary’s Chapel in Kenner’s Rivertown neighborhood. Buddy and Bella, who were nearly 2 years old at the time, wore formal canine couture, wagging their tails and greeting friends at the ceremony. Bella dazzled in a white dress and a delicate veil, partially crafted by Koi, while a dapper Buddy donned a suit that cost nearly $240 — a “ridiculous amount of money,” Koi says. “It [cost] more than my husband’s tux,

but it was worth it,” Koi says, adding that Buddy’s suit was accessorized with the same tie worn by Patrick’s groomsmen. Since many elements of their wedding were homemade, the couple found other ways to minimize their budget and create a wedding with a rustic feel, he says. Before the ceremony, a close friend of the Beards dressed Buddy and Bella and brought them to the venue. “Somebody else was completely responsible for them,” Patrick says. His best man and Koi’s maid of honor escorted the frisky canines down the aisle. “The dogs were so excited because they saw a bunch of people they wanted to see,” Koi says. “Buddy was sniffing every person on his way forward.” After making their appearance, Buddy and Bella posed for a few pictures and went home.

PETS

“We know our dogs really well, and they can handle a small group at a time, but with a large group, they get kind of overwhelmed,” Koi says. “So we thought it was important to walk down the aisle and then get back home.” Since the reception venue wasn’t dog friendly, Patrick and Koi displayed life-size cardboard cutouts of Buddy and Bella dressed in their wedding outfits near the entrance to the room.

Expert Advice Choosing an appropriate venue is important for couples who want to include pets in their wedding, but brides and grooms also need to consider their pet’s temperament, says Ann Becnel, a New Orleans-based dog trainer and owner of ABC Dogs (www.abcompaniondogs.com). “The type of dogs that are going to do well are very stable-minded,” Becnel says. “They should do well in new environments. Since the wedding is long, the dog has to be able to relax.” Couples who decide to include their dog have options, she says. They can find a confidante or an experi-

enced handler who will escort Fido down the aisle and sit with him during the ceremony. (A chew toy will keep the dog busy.) Or they can train the pup to perform a “recall down the aisle,” without becoming distracted by guests, and a “strong stay” command to avoid getting rambunctious during the vow exchange. But they would have to work on this about six months in advance, and practice at the venue with a few people present, Becnel says. “A lot of people want immediate results, but that just isn’t the way dog training works,” Becnel says. “They have to be realistic about their timeframe.” Couples also should make sure the celebration takes place in a safe, pet-friendly environment, and consider whether the dog will want to participate. “When the big day comes, if the dog is too anxious or gung-ho, (the couple) should abandon the idea so that they’re not on ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos,’ ” Becnel says. “They shouldn’t expect the dog to perform miracles on the day of their wedding.”

Questions To Ask and

FOR CATERING! ARMO C Y TR

Things To Remember

BY K A NDACE P OW ER G R AV E S YOUR WEDDING DAY SHOULD BE CAREFREE AND CALM, and the bridal couple should be relaxed and confident that their planning will result in a seamless transition from ceremony to reception to sendoff. Planning a wedding means handling a million details, trying to foresee a number of scenarios and guests’ needs and making certain the things you plan are a match for the space and adhere to the rules at your venue (many don’t allow candles with flames, for example). For couples doing much of the planning themselves, it can be overwhelming. How do you know what to ask? Here are some things to remember and questions to ask.

Questions

• Who announces transitions and keeps the timeline on the wedding day? • Where are guests allowed to smoke? • What should a bride have in her day-of emergency kit? • What is wedding insurance and is it needed? • Does the space accommodate a live band or DJ? • Does the couple need to hire security or is it provided?

Don’t forget

• FA L L 2 01 9

• Remember to include your photographer and videographer in the food and beverage count. • Put someone in charge of gathering items left in the dressing rooms, any gifts brought to the wedding and any decor, personal items and food that must be removed from the venue. • Make sure you designate someone who will pick up any cards brought to the reception. The day-of coordinator should have a safe place to keep them. • Have someone pick up your cake topper and properly prepare it for freezing. • Ask a family member or friend to take charge of the bridal bouquet and attendants’ flowers and arrange a place and time for them to be picked up or preserved.

BRIDE + GROOM

• Who pays for what in a wedding? • Does your venue allow candles and sparklers, homemade desserts and edible guest favors? • Which vendors should receive tips on top of their contracted prices? • What is a reasonable day-of timeline? • How many hours does the couple get the venue for the rental price? • When can your vendors get into the venue to decorate, set up, do sound checks, etc. Is any equipment available to them, such as a ladder, microphone, etc.? • How long does the couple have access to the venue for rehearsal? • What time must everyone be out of the venue after the reception? • What is the deposit fee, and when is the remainder due? Is any of it refundable? • What is the rain plan? • Does the venue allow your choice of caterer and beverage service or is the couple required to use an in-house vendor? Same question for the wedding cake. • Is staff for bar and food service included in the venue fee? • Can the couple use candles at the ceremony and reception? (Some venues require flameless LED candles and lights). Are sparklers allowed for the sendoff? (If so, remember to have pails of sand where guests can douse hot sparklers.) • Who is responsible for setup and breakdown? • Does the venue provide parking and where is it? • How can one accommodate people’s dietary issues? • What type of transportation should be provided for guests? • What does the venue’s coordinator handle? • Is the couple allowed to bring in food and alcohol for the bride, groom, attendants, etc. to drink and eat while getting ready? • Is there a place for the bridal parties to get ready for the ceremony?
