• SPRING 2021
In time, couples started planning micro-weddings, the industry-coined term as a wedding with no more than 50 people. And micro-wedding we did in fall 2020. My fiancé and I cut our wedding guest list by 85% and followed in the footsteps of many “Covid couples” before us who decided to still legally join together while following public health guidelines. We had an intimate, outdoor wedding in the backyard of my childhood home in the 7th Ward with immediate family members and close friends in attendance, a far cry from the 200-person event planned for the Audubon Tea Room at the Audubon Zoo. When planning our micro-wedding, there was no shortage of vendors who were already adapting to serve these smaller events, making the most of a time when their livelihoods were halted overnight. “All of the weddings I have done since the beginning of the pandemic have been small weddings of just close friends and family, typically at max of 40 guests,” says Traven Stout of Gris Gris Photography.
At Perrier Party Rentals, tables, chairs and place settings for events at homes, rather than rented event venues, became the new normal in 2020. “We had more couples who never thought about doing a home event before turn to home events because they didn’t want to wait anymore,” said Gail Benoit, general manager. “Every single home wedding we did during the pandemic was a result of the couple not being able to have the event in the location they originally wanted.” Some restaurants pivoted to provide catering for backyard weddings. For our backyard event, we used The Munch Factory, which provided a plated meal and masked servers. Owner Alexis Pearson Ruiz says the restaurant has catered three micro-weddings since the pandemic began more than a year ago. While a smaller, scaled-down event was nothing my fiancé and I had ever imagined when we began planning our wedding, the silver lining was that the backyard celebration brought a focus back to the union. A way to celebrate with close family safely, and for many reasons, resulted in a truly unforgettable evening. It’s an experience shared by many couples who opted for a scaled-down version of their fantasy wedding: The smaller event still provided an innumerable amount of joy, despite not everyone on the original list being able to bear witness in person. The sadness and disappointment of not

the year 2020 certainly brought the concept of “something new” to another level, and for many, the experience of planning a wedding during the ongoing pandemic could best be described as chaotic. In March 2020, rather than go to my second wedding dress fitting, I was recycling boxes of invitations for my May 15, 2020, wedding date, which was canceled overnight. I was mailing out “postponed due to uncertainty surrounding COVID-19” postcards, and instead of relishing in Instagram posts about flowers and sparklers, I was sending countless emails to vendors, hoping that “global pandemic” was an acceptable reason to waive a change fee. In the spring, postponing a wedding six months later seemed like a safe bet, and my fiancé and I decided on it. But then, as fall 2020 loomed with no end of the virus in sight — and as the city of New Orleans further reduced capacity limits of gatherings — we decided to reschedule the big event again to 2021, a year-and-a-half after our original date. The wedding planner we spent hours with creating a menu and setting up a floorplan was furloughed. The hotel where we had booked a block of rooms has since gone out of business. This was completely unknown territory. Proper wedding etiquette has plenty to say about table settings and name cards, but there’s no worldwide pandemic etiquette section. Engaged couples who had weddings planned after March 2020 all had the same conversation: What do we do now?

Looking Ahead:
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE WEDDING INDUSTRY?
With the wedding industry still currently flatlining due to the pandemic, experts say bookings for large gatherings are planned in earnest for fall 2021. In fact, wedding venues are now backlogged with rescheduling so many weddings from 2020 that newly engaged couples are finding calendars at popular venues are already filled; they aren’t just competing with other recently engaged couples for dates, they are competing with rescheduled dates from 2020 as well. “Events that had to reschedule from 2020 have taken up most of the dates in 2021,” Culbertson said. “Starting

The author’s wedding was originally scheduled to take place at the Audubon Zoo with the theme of ‘They All Asked For You,’ a nod to the Meters’ song. The pandemic altered those plans. Some couples are opting to wait until the pandemic is over to get hitched, while some have gone ahead with smaller, outdoor gatherings while following public health guidelines.

having the wedding of my dreams was replaced with contentment and gratitude. April Ward, who wed on April 13, 2020 (her originally planned wedding day) with just her husband and the officiant in their backyard said, “Our families were watching on Zoom, and I remember it was really peaceful. A lot of people just want to marry their partner and I’m glad we have come up with ways to still be able to do that and share it with our families.” Experts say smaller, more intimate gatherings may be a trend moving forward, even as regulations relax for large gatherings.

show proof of vaccinations to attend? Again, there’s no rulebook. No matter what type of celebration, Culbertson said large gatherings can’t come back quickly enough to bring a battered industry back to its feet. The institute laid off 24 salaried staff members during the pandemic, leaving just two employees in the events department. As the events calendar fills up, more employees are coming back on the payroll. “The [wedding] industry has taken a beating during Covid,” she said. “The businesses that have survived will go from zero to crazy once regulations are lifted.”

in September 2021 through May 2022 most, if not all, of our Saturday evenings are already booked.” Nicole Young, who got engaged in October 2020, said a lack of availability was an unexpected challenge when booking her wedding at Il Mercado in the Lower Garden District. “I wanted a November 2021 date, but I couldn’t get November, so I went with January 2022,” she said. “A fall wedding date is already a hot ticket item to begin with, and just exacerbate that with couples moving their dates, and November availability just completely disappears. I felt more pressure to book and make decisions with all the vendors.” The pressure is also on for couples who rescheduled from 2020, including evaluating whether it’s even worth it to spend the money on the big party after all. Is it faux pas to re-wear a wedding dress that you wore in your backyard celebration? Can you un-invite coworkers from a job you were laid off from during the pandemic? The wedding of Nick Foreit and Chad Wallace
R by
When my friends
Jim and Katja Vella asked me a few months ago to officiate their wedding, the answer was easy. I’d known Jim for years, and having seen him with Katja on and off for the last year, it was clear he was happier and more at ease than I’d ever seen him. It wasn’t my first hitchin’ post rodeo: I’d married my friends Chad Wallace and Nick Foreit back in 2017. And, as the founder

of the First Church of Count Chocula, Abridged and ordained minister in the Universal Life Church Ministries, I was wellacquainted with the holy rolling necessary to oversee such auspicious occasions. It did, however, get me to thinking. I realized that while I could remember plenty of weddings I’d been to over the last few years, I couldn’t really think of the last time I went to one in a church with a Very Very Official Officiant from said house of worship.
R
Best friends overseeing the deal? Sure. Backyard affairs with loads of flowers, live music and a family member doing the deed? Absolutely. Hell, I’d even seen my friends Joel and Jenai get married by Joel’s boss. But a minister who at best vaguely knew the happy couple solemnly reading from a holy book? Nope, drawing a blank. “I’ve definitely seen the trend [to friends and family] since before Katrina,” says Michele CaswellAdams, the owner of Unique Weddings & Events on Baronne

Street. “I’m seeing it with more and more of couples,” she says, estimating that as much as 75% of the weddings her firm plans are opting for someone other than official officiants. The lack of formality and increase in intimacy has meant “ceremonies are getting funnier and funnier,” Caswell-Adams says. It also lets couples be more creative in how they do their vows. At one wedding just before the pandemic began, the couple had decided to use their respective siblings as officiants. Now, this may not seem like an option for the faint of heart: Your siblings know you better than anyone, and they have an all-access pass to the black box of your most embarrassing moments. But it’s that sort of intimate knowledge that can produce some of the most touching — and fun — ceremonies, CaswellAdams says. The pre-pandemic wedding officiated by the couple’s siblings ended up being “one of the funniest weddings I’ve done,” she says. There’s a variety of reasons why partners have increasingly turned to less traditional officiants. One obvious factor has
been the abandonment of strict cultural notions about where a wedding can take place. With more and more weddings taking place outside of churches over the last 30 years, it’s made other changes in centuries old traditions more possible. Another factor is money. Weddings have always been expensive affairs, and each succeeding generation has seen skyrocketing costs. For couples that are paying their own way, this can be a huge factor in what they do as part of their nuptials. At between $400 and $450 a pop, officiants may not be the biggest ticket item in a wedding, but it’s still a big expense, especially when all you really are getting is a stranger suddenly involved in one of the most important moments of your life. And, Wallace says, even if the officiant stays for the party — which, let’s be real, is the entire point of getting married — they end up “just standing in the corner” instead of being a part of the celebration. His husband, Nick Foreit, agrees. “There’s always that bit of awkwardness, because the officiant only knows a small part of them.” Which, ultimately, is the main

reason couples are picking people they know to help them tie the knot. It creates a more personal and intimate ceremony, which can in turn better reflect the couple, their families and friends, and the union they’re about to create of all those disparate things. At the first wedding Wallace went to without a traditional officiant, “he was this hippie-dippy dude. And when he started, he said ‘Guys, this is awesome!’ And I thought, ‘Yes!

This is what I want!’ ” “If you’re married in church, the script is written … I trusted you to know your audience and read the room,” Wallace says. Likewise, it was a no-brainer for Jim and Katja Vella to ask me to oversee their vows when they decided to get married. “It can be a more intimate endeavor. You pick someone who can better cater to your desires [because they know you],” Jim says, adding “I liked the freedom and versatility of it all.” And he was right, the ceremony — which ended up being a brief affair amongst a handful of friends because of Covid — was a direct reflection of Jim and Katja. Talented artists with goofy streaks, the couple wore matching monkey suits and leashes to be married at the backyard bar of BJ’s. The witnesses were some of the couple’s closest friends. It was a perfect reflection of who they are. And if a priest had suddenly showed up to conduct the ceremony, it simply wouldn’t have made sense. “You’re part of the family,” Jim says. “And if we could have a family member marry us, why wouldn’t we?”

owner Martha Claire Breland is looking forward to April, when she will finally unveil a new section of the boutique that is geared toward engaged couples and newlyweds looking to create fashionable tablescapes for home entertaining. It will also be a go-to spot for longtime married couples to update staples. “I envision popping a bottle of champagne with a newly engaged couple,
and pulling together a table that is functional, fun and comfortable for their wedded bliss,” Breland says. “We want their registry to speak to their personalities. Picking out something you use every day or see every day should be an experience — and we look forward to the opportunity.” The 500-square-foot area of the shop will have a bit of a salon feel — with comfortable seating so customers can linger for a while — and will feature sample tablescapes and decor from local artists and classic tabletop lines
including Juliska, Vietri, Costa Nova, Annieglass and Beatriz Ball. Breland has been working on setting up the space with interior designer Betsey Hazard from House of Hazard. “[Hazard] has an amazing eye for color and has been instrumental in setting the tone for the new space,” Breland says. “The initial intention of the space was a wedding registry, but as the space evolves, we’ve realized that newlyweds are not the only ones who need new place settings. I’ve been married for 11 years, and
Judy at the Rink’s expansion, slated to open in early April, will offer table settings, dishes, glassware, stationery and other home accents.

Breland says she delights in the fun of choosing place settings, whether it includes swapping out a tablecloth, choosing new wine glasses or incorporating festive napkins to an existing setting. “Entertaining and setting your table is an expression of yourself, and we want to offer fun options,” Breland says. “A tablecloth and napkins can change the whole feel of a table. Everyone was entertaining at home last year and it was fun to add a pop of color on the table.”

there comes a point when you have to replace your everyday plates.” Breland predicts business will pick up this spring, especially as New Orleans is slowly coming back to life after a year of shutdowns and canceled plans. She says opening up this section of the store was a “natural fit,” because many of her customers come to the Garden District shop seeking wedding gifts. “We listen to our customers and are constantly searching for new and fun ways to freshen up the table,” she says.
