THE HOME OF DESIGNER AND STATIONER ALEXA PULITZER AND HER HUSBAND, SETH LEVINE, SHOWCASES CREATIVITY AND SOPHISTICATION By SARAH RAVITS Photos provided by ALEXA PULITZER Pre-pandemic, designer and stationer Alexa Pulitzer and her husband Seth Levine threw lavish theme parties “whenever I
had a reason,” Pulitzer says. “I was raised on entertaining.” Pulitzer, who has twice in recent years been named a “Top 100 Salonniere” for her power to bring people together at sophisticated, festive gatherings, says she and Levine purchased their spacious residence in Faubourg St. John in 2012 with their love of hosting in mind. “We make a solid pair,” she says. “I take pleasure in procuring the live music, logistics and aesthetics, and Seth is fabulous at curating chefs, bartending and taking care of our guests.” The house fosters a creative, welcoming environment. Pulitzer oversaw the renovation of the Eastlake Victorian home eight years ago, which included the installation of new electrical and plumbing work, triple crown and plaster mouldings, wood floors and a new

In the salon, a repurposed baker’s table now serves as a bar. A second bar, pictured beneath a painting depicting three saints is lightweight and functional.
The green painting, left, is by local painter Mallory Page. A painting above the mantel, center, is by Pulitzer’s grandfather, Leonard Flettrich. Above the antique buffet, right, is an 1800s Dutch masterpiece. All furnishings are antiques.

stairwell. The couple also turned the attic above a grand center hallway into a playroom for their children and transformed a former horse stable on the property into a guesthouse for visiting friends. Pulitzer says her goal in updating the home “was to create a warm habitat that worked well for all our entertaining needs.” Large paintings by her late grandfather, Leonard Flettrich, a prominent Tulane architecture professor, hang throughout the home. “I chose a dark color palette as a moody background for my grandfather’s abstract paintings,” Pulitzer says. In addition to honoring a lineage of artists in Pulitzer’s family, the home’s aesthetic also reflects her globetrotting adventures. Pulitzer studied fine art and lived in Italy during her 20s. “I have a fondness for Italian opulence, European antiques and an earthy palette,” she says. She also mixes these elements with unexpected, more spontaneous accents — such as a taxidermied elk head in the salon, which she brought home from Decatur Street “one drunken St. Patrick’s day.” The salon, which they often refer to as “the music room” is one of her favorite spaces in the house and is close to her home office. But these days it is a quieter place for reflection and focus amid COVID-19 restrictions that bar them from throwing their usual gatherings.

Pulitzer and Levine’s son, Edge, now use the salon as a study area while learning from home at an antique writing desk. “I wanted him to be closer to me in case he has questions,” Pulitzer says. With Edge, their daughter Kagan and a newly adopted Doberman, Pulitzer and Levine say they spend more time than ever in their backyard, and in the Pac-Man shaped pool after long days of working and schooling from home. The dining room, once the site of dinner parties that spilled into nearby rooms and the expansive center hallway, now hosts wholesome family pingpong tournaments. As she waits to host her next party — many months from now, most likely — Pulitzer is content to stay put. “I don’t need to go anywhere,” she says. “There’s something to be said about your home when it can make you very happy.”

Creative Connections at Home Malone

situated in a bright little house at 4610 Magazine St. and is filled to the brim with art. The cozy front porch is decked out in colorful papier Carnival flowers and door hangings, and the shop’s floor-to-ceiling shelves are stocked with greeting cards, home accents, oil paintings, other functional art pieces and accessories that display a distinct, Southern flair. “Home Malone is an art gallery you’re not intimidated to walk into,” says owner Kristin Malone. “It’s a place that feels like home where you can find a gift that comes with a story to tell.” Malone started the business out of her carport in 2011. She had found herself confused with how to spend her
extra time after finishing college, during which she worked a full-time day job at a Seventh Ward supply and fabrication shop, while taking classes full-time at night. She tapped into her art background and love for rustic folk art to make New Orleans-themed kitchen signs and a operate a furniture refinishing business, and she participated in art shows and festivals to sell her crafts. When she opened the Home Malone storefront in 2016, showcasing her network of hardworking makers was a no-brainer. “All of the makers we carry are located in the Southern states — Texas to South Carolina — and about 50% of the 160-plus makers we carry are Louisiana-based,” Malone says. She purchases about 75% of the store’s inventory wholesale and pays

upon delivery, which allows makers to use the funds to keep creating. Artists who are interested in submitting their work for consideration can visit the artist application on the Home Malone website that lists all of the store’s curation criteria. Malone is fully involved and selective about what makes the cut. “I ask where the product is being made and how it is being made,” she says. “If it’s not being made locally, is it being ethically made? And how are the extra profits made by outsourcing benefiting the local community? Our goal is to invest in and encourage local production and let the community know how items are made and why products cost what they do.” Curation is a creative process for Malone, who believes art should be accessible to all budgets and also carry the work of artists that put the same level of love into their creations as she does into her store. “Our mission is to be overly thoughtful in our curation in order to make the biggest

local impact we can,” Malone says. “If we ask you to shop local, so will we.” Home Malone is home to a variety of multi-functional art pieces that are both visually appealing and usable. Among her current favorites are ceramic oyster shells that can be used to cook on the grill or used as a soap dish. Recently, Home Malone brought in a new line of hand-painted iris ceramics that include wine glasses, serving plates and a champagne chiller lined with 22-karat gold. While they do work with seasonal or trendy items, she says, “Our main goal is to provide classic products that will be used for the long term and make them worth investing in.” Home Malone has seen an uptick in interest amid COVID-19 restrictions for home decor and colorful door hangers with local symbols, Malone says. The business has

taken community safety seriously and shifted its online experience to make it more convenient to buy and receive items with limited contact. Still, Malone says, it feels strange to keep the doors locked. Both of Home Malone’s locations — the other is at 629 N. Carrollton Ave. — are in historic houses, and customers used to come in and say that they had friends who lived there decades ago and describe where they had dinner and watched television together. It’s these types of moments, bonding with a supportive local community, that foster a sense of enthusiasm among the Home Malone employees and creators, Malone says. She recalls when a loyal customer brought her two young daughters to birthday shop for her with

a budget and Malone’s guidance. A few months later, a young couple came in to the shop with the secret results of the gender of their unborn baby, chose a pink and blue onesie, and asked a shop employee to read the results and wrap up the onesie that matched the gender while they had breakfast next door. After the gender reveal gathering, they shared the video with Malone. “Even though we’re small, I know we can make a big difference in the world,” she says. “To think that I’m one of the few that get to run a business that is supported by locals on one of the most prolific shopping streets in one of the most magical cities on earth is surreal and humbling.”

vice versa. Sunrooms, porches and side galleries are versatile areas that can serve as both places to relax and entertain — while bringing more than a hint of sunshine into the home. Residential interior designer Alex Robinson of A. Robinson Interiors (arobinsoninteriors.com) did not design these homes herself, but she offers advice on how to incorporate similar accents.

the look
The Old Metairie home of interior designer Alix Rico features an elegant balance of earth tones, which gives it a serene feel, Robinson says. Plus, she likes the way Rico layered her plants. “Putting the taller plants in the front creates a lot of depth,” Robinson says. Mid-century planters like Rico’s remain in style, and spherical planters are also trendy right now, along with “anything that’s a natural material — cement, wood, things like that,” Robinson says. The spacious Uptown sunroom of Mathilda Currence allows natural light to accentuate views of the backyard. It also incorporates outdoor furniture. Robinson says to look for “organic” patterns and UV-resistant fabric to complement this type of atmosphere. At the Bywater home of Christina Maras, doors lead from the kitchen to a lush garden and pool area. “I like this color scheme,” notes Robinson. “They successfully show off different elements like siding, shutters and the doors all using different colors, but they have the same value and intensity.” Fragrant jasmine grows around a window at the Bywater home of Robert Mercurio and Kate Palmer. Robinson says this could be a source of inspiration for a vertical garden or a “living wall,” which can be grown indoors.

A window treatment around the doors at Mercurio and Palmer’s home gives it a “casual and inviting,” vibe, Robinson says, noting that the extended curtain rod helps frame the door and make it seem bigger and even “warms it up.” A driftwood centerpiece on the table adds another element of nature.
