HEALING Kristen Downing uses large, bold paintings to tell the stories of civil rights figures and heal from pain.

FEBRUARY 2022
Artist Kristen Downing was sitting at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, years before the con-
8
struction of the new terminal, when she noticed paint chipping on one of the doors. Where most would have seen an imperfection, she saw inspiration. So the Kenner native snapped a photo, with plans to recreate the texture once she got back to her studio as a background for her next painting. While creating, Downing noticed she’d accidentally spilled paint on the canvas, but she wasn’t mad about it. She was in the midst of developing her signature style. It’s the first thing you see when you look at her large-scale paintings depicting Black Americans — the backgrounds containing bold splashes of color applied with spatulas contrasting against black and white line work, stemming from her work as a tattoo artist in New Orleans for more than a decade. And that’s completely intentional. “I paint large pictures with bold colors, so that’s grabbing your attention with that abstract background,” Downing says. “Once I got your attention, you’re looking within all of my subjects on that canvas … You’re going to be drawn in and you’re gonna pay attention to what’s on that canvas. From there, your job is to go home and do more research about the story that I’m telling on that canvas.” After a police officer shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014,
Downing sits in front of one of her paintings.
Kristen Downing’s art is characterized by bold, attentiongrabbing colors with abstract backgrounds.
“The Son of NOLA” represents the strength and survival of Black men in New Orleans.
Downing’s painting of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress.

Downing began to center her work around protesting in America and telling Black stories. She’s gone on to paint both national and local figures like Ruby Bridges and Oretha Castle Haley to educate the community on Black history because “the schools didn’t tell it enough,” she says. Downing says that many people, even native Louisianans, hear these Black stories for the first time through her art. This was true when she painted a mural of Martha White, a Black woman from Baton Rouge who in 1953 refused to get up from a seat in the “whites only” section of the bus, spurring Black residents to start a bus boycott. The moment would serve as the model for Rosa Parks to take a similar action two-anda-half years later, which Martin Luther King Jr. organized. White died last year at the age of 99. “I painted a mural of her. People didn’t even know who she was,” Downing says. “They didn’t even know her story.” Downing says she learns something every time she creates a piece, too, like when she painted a mural of the Canal Street lunch counter sit-ins organized by the New Orleans chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), including Oretha Castle Haley. “I know Oretha Castle Haley from the street sign,” she says. “I’d never seen a picture of this lady, and I’m about to be 40 years old.” Downing is currently one of several artists featured in the “Healing History” exhibit at The Cary Saurage Community Arts Center in Baton Rouge, which runs through Feb. 24. Her four pieces have messages like “I am a woman healing” and “I am a man healing.” It’s a subject she’s been grappling with a lot lately, as her mother passed away from cancer. Covid has hit her family hard, too, she says. She lost her mother-in-law to the virus, her husband was hospitalized with it and she contracted it, too. With the exhibit, she wants to show people that it’s OK to heal and to ask for help. “The way I grew up I didn’t too much hear that in my family,” Downing says. “All I heard was, ‘Pray about it. Pray about it.’ I don’t recall people seeing therapists, and that’s in the Black culture. We’re not accustomed to that. We don’t have the resources for that … (but) everyone should have access to that. It should be free because although we can pray, we still need someone to sit down and talk to, and everybody don’t have that.” Though the exhibit just opened on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Downing says she’s already hearing the same sentiment from collectors, friends and people online alike: “Everybody is saying that it’s needed,” she says.

Go-to recipes for parade season
Fat Tuesday Shrimp Salad “The thing we really like about this recipe is you can put it
with anything — it’s versatile. You can make it to put on a sandwich, chips or crackers, or jazz it up with other stuff if you like. You can take it with you on the route. It’s a nice pick-me-up. It won’t weigh you down while you’re out there, and it doesn’t need to be heated.” — ALEXIS RUIZ, co-owner of The Munch Factory (6514 Congress Drive, 504-459-2180; themunchfactory.net).

Favorite Classic Punch for Grown Folks
“The last few years Mardi Gras has been
more than a little chilly, so here’s my personal favorite party punch. While it’s best served warm, it absolutely works at any temperature. The recipe is based on a hundreds-of-years-old rhyme for making punch in the colonial era. Just like New Orleans, this predates the United States of America itself. The rhyme is, ‘One, sour / two, sweet/ three, strong/ four, weak/ five for spice, because it’s nice.’” — MARK SCHETTLER, General Manager of Bar Tonique (820 Rampart St., 504-324-6045). INGREDIENTS: 10 lemons 20 ounces of white sugar 30 ounces of either Jamaican Rum or VSOP Brandy / Cognac, or 15 ounces of each 40 ounces of tea (recommended: half black tea or Earl Grey, and half orange spice) Optional secret ingredient: one can of hard cider, like St. Arnold or Aval Grated nutmeg
D I R EC T I O N S :
Ideally, these are decaf teas, but if not, no big deal — this just means you’re gonna be serving drinks that have the effect of a vodka-Red Bull. Brew it strong, as you want a lot of flavor from this. Once it’s brewed good and strong, you can discard the tea bags.
1. Put the sugar in a large pot. This is the pot you’ll be serving from, so make sure it’s big enough to fit all the ingredients. With a peeler, peel all 10 lemons. Mix the lemon peels into the sugar, making sure the peels are all fully coated in sugar. Cover the pot, and leave it to sit, ideally overnight but at least for 4 hours. The oils from the peels will leech into the sugar, giving you a flavored sugar that’s called “oleo saccharum” (so basically “oil sugar”). You’ll want to let it sit before continuing with the rest of the recipe. 2. Juice the lemons. You want at least 10 ounces of lemon juice. If you end up with more, hold onto it because if you find this recipe too sweet you can just add more lemon juice. Strain the pulp and seeds out. 3. Add tea. I like to do half black tea/ Earl Grey and half orange spice or orange pekoe. You could do all or either. I don’t recommend flavors like passionfruit or hibiscus or mint or anything like that.
4. Add the lemon juice to the pot and stir. You can add the tea as well, as long as it’s still hot. The point right now is to totally liquefy the sugar. The acid in the lemon juice will do a lot of that work for you, but of course hot tea can help, too. Keep at it until the sugar is totally melted and incorporated — you should be able to dip a spoon in and pull it back out without seeing any sugar crystals on it.
Optional: I like to add a can of hard cider at this point.
5. Add the booze. I like to do half Jamaican Rum and half VSOP Brandy/ Cognac. I recommend only doing aged rum and/or brandy/cognac, and definitely do not use unaged stuff like vodka or gin. The better quality you’re willing to use, the better it’s gonna taste — this isn’t meant to be freshman-year-of-college jungle juice. You deserve better now. Remember, a 750 milliliter bottle has about 25 ounces in it, and 1 liter has about 32 ounces.
6. Warm it up and serve. It should be warm enough to feel cozy when you drink it. You can keep the pot on a very low heat for as long as you want. Ladle into mugs, and give it a few scrapes of nutmeg on top. Trust me on the nutmeg though, it’s not a step you want to skip. If you’re putting it in a Thermos and taking it to go, I’d probably go ahead and add some to it even though it won’t be on top anymore.
PHOTO BY DMITRIY SIDOR /GETT Y IMAGES
TIPS: One part lemon juice (sour), 2 parts sugar (sweet), 3 parts booze (strong), 4 parts tea (weak), and a few scrapes of nutmeg on top (spice). One crucial part of that: The sugar needs to be prepped at least four hours ahead of time, and ideally overnight. This will keep for a couple of days, so you can make a big batch on Sunday or Monday and get after it until Tuesday night.
