Mantels MAGNIFICENT
Tips for decorating historic architectural features By SARAH RAVITS New Orleanians don’t often use fireplaces for tending to actual fires, but mantels are historic architectural features that can serve another important purpose: to display seasonal decor, antiques and other pieces for our abundant celebrations. Decorating mantels “always adds to the personality of the space in general because it reflects the person who lives there,” says interior designer Regina Correa of Studio Riche Designs. Correa helps clients select different colors and textures depending on the time of year. For autumn, she goes with browns, oranges, deep reds and gold colors, whereas during the winter she switches it up to reds, greens, golds

Correa praises this mantelpiece for its symmetry and festive colors that work for both fall and winter.
This look could conjure autumn vibes because of the skeleton decor, but it can also work year-round for those with more Gothic inclinations.

and silvers. Wood, wool and warmer textures also work in mantel decor during colder months to conjure up coziness. Correa (who did not design the mantels pictured here) says she favors a more minimalist look, instead of overcrowding the space. She also recommends adding items of interest that are different sizes, shapes and height. “Make sure your eye is always moving from one thing to another,” she says.

FUN FINDS IN Metairie
10
In the heart of Metairie, Gordon’s is a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away from the behemoths of Target and other big-box stores, a block off Veterans Memorial Boulevard on Waverly Street. The family-owned business is run by brothers Ryan and Jason Chalmers, who named the business to honor their father. The shop is situated in an unassuming strip mall but inside it is bursting with seasonal decor that changes depending on whatever the region is celebrating. Right now they are gearing up for the winter holidays and say that customers are already excitedly shopping for Carnival decor even though it’s months away. For the Greater New Orleans area, it’s a year-round place to shop for home goods and gifts. Gordon’s also sells staples like greeting cards and photo frames, along

with crafting supplies and novelty gifts like socks, kitchenware, accessories and pre-made holiday wreaths for all occasions. “It’s an eclectic mix of everyday goods and seasonal merchandise,” says co-owner Jason Chalmers. Since it opened at its location on Waverly Street, the store has tripled in size, says Chalmers. It expanded to take over commercial space next door, and the current inventory occupies 6,600 square feet. The brothers say they pride themselves on service, selection and price — in that order. “If you don’t serve your customers, then they don’t care about your selection or your prices,” Jason says. He says Gordon’s customers are mostly local, and that the brothers are considering expanding to the Northshore because they have received so many requests from the area recently. “Our clientele is as eclectic as the products we offer,” he says. “We have something for almost everyone.”

from major retailers can be a challenge. A wood shortage has made prices sky-high or pieces unavailable, and pandemic-related problems in supply chains mean it could take months for new furniture to arrive. Thankfully, there are a plethora of places in New Orleans where used and antique furniture is ready today. It takes only a bit of creativity and elbow grease to transform it into a standout piece in your home. At Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations, “A lot of mid-century modern pieces come through,” says Marguerite Oestreicher, executive director for the New Orleans area Habitat for Humanity. “The inventory changes literally every day.” Having furnished most of her own home from the Habitat ReStore, Oestreicher says employees have seen a number of unique projects that bring new life to older pieces. Locations are at 2900 Elysian Fields Ave. in New Orleans and 2425 Williams Blvd. in Kenner. Chalk painting is an easy and affordable way to give furniture and cabinets a face-lift. Most projects can be done in a day, and the only prep is to thoroughly clean the piece before getting started. “You can transform anything and everything,” says Kim Brandt Burr, co-owner of Nola Gifts & Decor, who sells over 40 shades of Jolie chalk paint at her Metairie and Destrehan locations. “You can get any piece to have a farmhouse look,

Giving an old piece of furniture a new color makeover can be a DIY job that takes a day. For bigger projects, or for those who are limited on time, a number of local stores provide custom services
or modern and shiny white, or do a layering technique with gold gilding wax. You can add stencils … you can take it to whatever level you want to take it to.” Chalk paint can even be a cheaper and quicker alternative to reupholstering cushions. “One customer’s red patio cushions faded from the sun, and she bought a can in the color ‘rouge,’ thinned it out with water and painted the cush-

ions,” Burr says. “We still talk about how amazing it was.” Burr will resume offering classes on chalk paintings — aimed at everyone from beginners to advanced DIYers — including a class on how to apply delicate gold leaf on furniture. Check the store’s social media pages for announcements. Some stores in New Orleans will do the refinishing work for you. At Dop Antiques on Jefferson Highway, owner Michiel Dop said customers who fall in love with an antique piece — but not its color or finish — can have custom work done by store employees.
“We offer custom paint jobs and hardware on antique pieces,” Dop says. “I’ve seen customers think of anything and everything, like one customer who wanted to take the top off of a buffet and replace it with a stone top.” Aside from full color and finish customization, other benefits to refurbishing furniture include getting high-quality pieces for a fraction of the price. “It’s much better than particle board,” Dop says. “And it’s eco-friendly; you don’t have to build something new, which is what I like about selling antiques.”
