crystal lighting and rare decor reflecting Old World European elegance fill a 20,000-square-foot warehouse on Jefferson Highway. Owner Michiel Dop has worked in the antiques industry since before he opened his New Orleans storefront 20 years ago. A native of the Netherlands, he became interested while helping his friend Pieter Den Dikken expand his antique business internationally — including to the United States — when the Dutch interest in antiques began to decline in favor of more modern furnishings. At the time, Dop and his now ex-wife, a born and raised New Orleanian, would travel to New Orleans for the holidays. Intrigued by the local interest in antiques he noticed while walking around the city, he began brainstorming ways to launch his own business. “We would shop on Magazine Street and in the French Quarter, and I quickly realized that antiques were popular in the city and the rest of the South, with its rich international history,” Dop says. Realizing this could be a business avenue, Dop and Den Dikken spoke with antique dealers throughout Louisiana and Mississippi. “At the time, there were no digital phones or cameras, so we had Polaroid pictures of furniture and architecturals from Europe. When we visited Ricca’s [Architectural Sales] in Mid-City and met with
Every month, Michiel Dop receives a 40foot shipping container filled with imports from Europe, Italy and Asia.
Customers can find antique architectural elements, crystal lighting, furniture and other decorative items at Dop Antiques.
Peter and Roland [Ricca, the owners], we hit the jackpot. We showed them pictures of beautiful French doors and they fell in love with them. They immediately put in an order for as many doors as we could possibly find,” Dop recalls. This solidified a long-lasting relationship with Ricca’s, and Dop Antiques was born shortly after. Though opening the business brought Dop permanently to the United States, Den Dikken remains his buyer in the Netherlands — and Dop still considers him like a brother. Every month, a 40-foot shipping container filled with imports arrives at the Jefferson Highway warehouse. And, as the name implies, the store offers mainly antiques, but also some modern items and brand-new accents as well, in a range of prices — from affordable to high-end. “Most of our items are from France, and we also have items from England, Italy, Egypt and the Far East,” Dop says. “My favorite French style is Louis Philippe for its simple lines and design. I also like mid-century modern, but it’s not something that a lot of people appreciate here.” When the business first opened, Dop strictly sold goods wholesale. But after Hurricane Katrina, he decided to sell both wholesale and retail. Some of the Old-World glamour also can be found in movies. Dop says production companies often approach him to stage sets for Michiel Dop seated on one of his favorite couches in the warehouse. PHOTO BY SAR AH R AVITS
period pieces, and his furnishings have been featured in blockbusters including “12 Years a Slave,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Into the Badlands” and “Django Unchained” — among others. “My pieces will fit in any decor [scheme] since I sell such a large variety of items and styles,” Dop says. Dop Antiques also works with decorators and designers, both locally and all over the United States, and offers furniture and decor for event rentals as well. Dop and his staff also create custom furniture. “I’ve always liked to work with my hands,” Dop says, crediting a carpenter he hired 15 years ago for teaching him these skills. “He told me a lot about woodwork and all the different finishes,” he says. And, although learning the process was a lot of trial and error, “We have learned a lot and can now make fabulous pieces of furniture in any style, finish and shape.” Though initially impacted by the pandemic shutdown, business has resumed at a healthy clip and the warehouse is open once for the mask-wearing public, and Dop is relieved. “I love my job,” Dop says. “I love what I sell, I love building furniture, and I love the fact that I can meet interesting people.” INFORMATION: 300 JEFFERSON HIGHWAY, (504) 3735132; DOPANTIQUES.COM

Hanging Outdoors Fall entertaining might be different this year, but it can still be safe and fun By SARAH RAVITS The normally anticipated fall entertaining season
will look a little different this year thanks to COVID-19, but fear not: There are still ways for New Orleanians to host festive gatherings while adhering to safety guidelines. Public health experts have noted that outdoor hangouts are the way to go — and party planners agree. Christina Chapuis, Wink Design & Events marketing and business development manager, is accustomed to helping people host huge gatherings. But now, more toned-down affairs — or “microevents” as she calls them — are on the horizon. “People are getting stir-crazy, and they want to be creative and do cool things,” she says. Chapuis recommends hosting “picnic-style” get-togethers and suggests guests bring their own blankets and items to spruce up outdoor areas. She also says to use larger tables to help people spread out while dining together al fresco, and if hosting an open bar, cover the cocktail glasses to avoid spreading germs. Chapuis encourages creativity with creating barriers to remind people to maintain the six-feet-apart rule. “It doesn’t have to be a plexiglass barrier; there are really cool arrangements and functional centerpieces that can remind people to stay further away,” she says. “There are ways to bring people together and be safe but not super awkward.”
