FOR 20 YEARS, PENNY FRANCIS OF ECLECTIC HOME HAS BROUGHT NEW DISCOVERIES INTO NEW ORLEANS HOMES.

An ever-evolving passion for interior design compelled Penny

Francis to open Eclectic Home 20 years ago this month. As its principal designer and owner, she says, “I was obsessed with furniture for as long as I could remember. The store has allowed me to showcase what ‘eclectic’ meant: [incorporating] diverse periods and styles.” Francis says she’s always looking for new, cutting-edge discoveries in furnishings and other designs, while also including timeless pieces into the mix. The 7,000-square-foot showroom is filled with one-ofa-kind accents, art, wallpaper, furniture and other decorative home goods. “We like the exclusivity and the idea that you won’t see our wares everywhere,” Francis says. But the boutique-style Riverbend business, which Francis primarily runs with her daughter Casi St. Julian, is more than just a wellappointed shop that appeals to clients of many different tastes. Staff also provides full-scale interior design services. Recently, it earned national accolades as one of Architectural Digest’s “40 Best Home Decor Stores in America” list. “We pride ourselves in creating designs that are reflections of the client and how they live,” she says. Francis and her team believe that there is a right and a wrong way to
be eclectic, and that’s where the skill of an experienced designer comes in. To accomplish an eclectic look, she says they approach each home project with the goal of helping clients achieve living spaces that reflect individuality. First, they consult with them to understand how the space will function and figure out clients’ preferences in textures, colors and furniture styles. Francis encourages them to expand their vision, often by showing them images of other home projects. The Eclectic Home team also works with clientele to spotlight and complement elements of personal significance, such as family heirlooms, while also incorporating newer designs that fit with a desired aesthetic. “We love to always add a little bit of the unexpected and stay away from matching,” Francis says. “We love contrasts in interiors, whether in color, texture, pattern or form. We want you to be engaged in the entire room, not focused on only one element.” Francis’ business has grown over the last two decades. Casi St. Julian, her daughter, serves as Eclectic Home’s senior designer, and her other daughter, Camryn Francis is a sophomore at Savannah College of Art and Design studying architecture. Penny Francis says she’s not sure what Camryn will do

when she completes her studies, but for now, she and St. Julian enjoy consulting with her for architectural expertise. Francis says she enjoys collaborating with her daughters and seeking their guidance. She and St. Julian have found ways to complement each other’s ideas. “We had to listen and appreciate what each other provided,” Francis says. “I am a Boomer and she is a millennial... But it makes for a perfect, well-balanced and original design aesthetic that speaks to our clients and how they live.” For more information: 8211 Oak St., 504-866-6654; eclectichome.net | Instagram @eclectichomenola
Giving back
The design team works with clients to personalize their spaces and introduce “unexpected” items, says Francis.
Eclectic Home has survived Hurricane Katrina, the economic crisis of 2008, the BP oil spill disaster and now, the COVID-19 pandemic. While all of these disasters have delivered blows to the small business community, Francis believes in the resilience of the business community. “We are in it for the long haul,” she says. “It is small businesses that are the heart of this community and economy. Supporting your local businesses keeps people employed, your tax dollars here in the city paying for the services we all want and need.” She says she’s also committed to giving back to those in need, through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity. The shop provides Habitat’s ReStore business (2900 Elysian Fields Ave., 504-943-2240) with products and furnishings to allow them to raise funds for continued assistance with homebuilding for those in need.

realtor Bryan Francher, co-owner of Francher Perrin Group, says hallways are often “the first statement that people see.” But whether it’s in the form of a welcoming entryway or a portal to get from one room to the next, he says it’s vital to put care into your hallway’s decor. “It’s part of the whole experience of the interior,” says Francher. He notes that homes with center halls — a classic architectural style — are popular requests, “the most coveted,” he says, especially for families. Because unlike in traditional New Orleans shotgun homes, in a center hall home, one isn’t required to pass through a bedroom in order to access the next room. Ellen Macomber, artist and designer, treats her hallway as another place to showcase her colorful, vibrant aesthetic. “I utilize every inch of space in my house,” she says. “It’s also a high-traffic area and it makes my eyes happy to pass by on my way from one room to another.”

1 The contemporary home in Esplanade Ridge belonging to Josh Mayer and Jill Dupre features elements of Swedish design, Moroccan textiles and Cuban art. In the hallway, an antique rickshaw collected on their many travels, is an unexpected element just underneath the staircase.
2 A colorful hallway at the home of Bryan Francher and Dan Brockhoeft features custom wallpaper and repurposed Mardi Gras masks placed on top of skullthemed Day of the Dead artwork by their friend, artist Joel Dyer. Dyer also painted the two-paneled “Feast of St. George” on the wall. “The hallway is full of color and has a lot of personality, which I like,” Francher says.

3 A long hallway that leads toward the rear of Ann Barnett’s home is filled with works by artists she has represented at the gallery she co-founded, the Hall-Barnett Gallery, “I can’t stand to see an empty space,” she once told The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate. “I have to fill it up right away.” Taxidermy, flamboyant sculptures purchased around the world and antique furniture are prominent in this space.

A stained-glass piece by fashion designer and artist Ellen Macomber, which she created while living in Amsterdam after Hurricane Katrina, hangs in an upstairs hallway window above a bench filled with sock monkeys — “overflow” from her young son, Donald. The bench was a score from a real estate sale. A colorful rug ties the space together.

TIPS FOR CHARACTERISTIC, EXTERIOR PAINT COLORS OF NEW ORLEANS By SARAH RAVITS | Photos by CHRIS GRANGER

New Orleans homes are characterized by historic architecture
22
styles, eye-catching details and famously bright exteriors. The only neighborhood with major paint regulations is the French Quarter, which is overseen by the Vieux Carre Commission, a regulatory agency that preserves and maintains the architectural and historic character of the neighborhood. The VCC requires buildings to adhere to specific colors that are generally more toned down, says Ashanti Smith, a sales representative at Sherwin Williams paint company. Sherwin Williams has created a line of 24 approved colors that residents and owners can use when updating their exteriors in the historic neighborhood. (The paint colors can be purchased from other paint companies, as well and must be approved by the VCC). Colors have been given names like “Pirate’s Gold” “Chartres Street Green” and “St. Ann Yellow.” The French Quarter, Smith notes, doesn’t use the same “bright yellows, golds or reds that I see in other areas of town.” But outside the French Quarter, pretty much anything goes, so if you’re looking to give your home a fresh coat of paint, local designer Jennifer Kelly of Design Lab NOLA has a few important tips. “Use a minimum of three colors,” she says. And to go above and beyond and be extra customized, “Use up to five.” She also suggests painting samples on the house directly and looking at them throughout the day and night to see how the colors change with the sunlight, and after it sets. And finally, both Kelly and Smith say to channel your creative side when choosing how to dress up your exterior. “You don’t want the same thing everybody else has,” Smith says. “You want to differentiate from your neighbors.” For more information: Sherwin Williams, multiple locations, sherwinwilliams.com; Design Lab, (504) 388-8781; designlabnola.com.
Shades of purple are playful and give the home a lighthearted, whimsical touch.
Kelly says “If you don’t have a lot of architectural details, look for at least one element to ‘pop’ with a complementary color.”
“Have fun with your shutters,” says Kelly. “This is a great place to add another color.”

painted a pleasant shade of light blue. The color is known to have a calming effect, but there’s also a bit of folklore — as well as functionality — behind it. In Georgia and South Carolina, the Gullah, descended from West African enslaved people, believed this color, known as “haint blue” would ward off ghosts and evil spirits. They believed that these malevolent supernatural figures could be tricked by the blue paint, thinking it was water, which they could not cross. The tradition caught on across the South. But there are also a few more functional explanations, for those who don’t believe in ghosts. Ashanti Smith, a sales representative at Sherwin Williams, says porches across the South are painted these colors because it can repel insects, who are tricked into thinking that it’s the sky. “It might be a myth,” she says. “But some people swear it works.” In a previous issue of Gambit, Blake Pontchartrain noted furthermore “it’s likely that substances once used in paint actually repelled insects. The chemical composition of paints has since changed, but many blue porch ceilings are still around.” Regardless of your beliefs, the tradition has stuck, and to this day, light blue porches are ubiquitous around New Orleans and the South.
