Mission

GAMBIT’S

Founded in 1960, The Blood Center is the primary supplier of blood, blood components and plasma derivatives to local hospitals throughout South Louisiana and parts of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We are a non-profit, community service organization guided by a volunteer Board of Trustees, comprised of community leaders and hospital representatives. The Blood Center supplies over 30 hospitals and numerous outpatient transfusion facilities in Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi. Many of these hospitals, including Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, Tulane University Hospital and St. Tammany Parish Hospital, treat patients from throughout this region. Our mission is to provide a quality supply of blood components to meet the needs of the communities served by The Blood Center, and to provide the technical support needed by the blood banking profession to achieve the highest safety and ethical standards.

Fun WHILE GIVING BACK

THANK YOU FOR READING GAMBIT’S GUIDE TO GIVING PUBLICATION. This annual insert tells the stories of the many wonderful non-profits that create an impact in our community. I hope you enjoy reading about the new things happening with these organizations and how you can get involved to help make a difference. One of my favorite things about supporting non-profits in the greater New Orleans area is that there is always an opportunity to attend a great party, gala or festival while helping a group raise money. Louisiana nonprofits are naturally skilled at throwing a good event and know that fundraising can be fun. These are a few upcoming events that you can attend to help support a great cause: Art Against AIDS (Dec. 1) will raise money for No/AIDSTask Force; and on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31) Big Night New Orleans will donate a portion of ticket sales to Son of a Saint. There also are events for kids like the Louisiana Children’s Museum Pajama Party Brunch (Dec. 1), Communities in Schools’ Once Upon a Party (Apr. 7) and City Park and Friends of City Park hosts many kid-friendly events all year. When you bring your children to one of these events, talk to them about

what your are supporting and why, to help instill philanthropy at a young age. Please read the entire guide to find more events to put on your calendar. And while special events do help fundraise and create awareness, event production can get costly and the organizations’ net profit may not always be as much as you may think. From venue rentals and tables and chairs to live entertainment and marketing expenses, there are many costs associated with throwing a good party, and not everything can be donated or offered in-kind. Many of these groups are in need of direct monetary donations. Year to year, nonprofits rely on donors and grants that may come and go, and funds from a previous year are not always guaranteed the next. To help make a difference for a non-profit that you feel passionate about, consider making a donation on Giving Tuesday (Nov. 27) or before the end of the year. Thank you for reading this year’s publication, I hope you find some new non-profits to support in the coming year via attending a great party, making a direct donation or even volunteering and lending a hand.

Where did you go to school? In New Orleans, we often start our conversations this way. Our commonalities come from shared traditions, friendships, and experiences. Habitat homebuyers are fellow New Orleanians you interact with every day: your child’s school bus driver, the bank teller you see every week, or the attentive technician at your doctor’s office. Like all of us, they work hard every day to achieve their goals. Every month, more than a third of renters in New Orleans hand over half their paycheck just for rent; but through Habitat’s homeownership program, it doesn’t have to be that way. With your help, hard working local families become homebuyers and in so doing, build stronger communities and create generations of change.

Joy. Hope. Peace. This holiday season, help us deliver real hope to abused and neglected children. Court Appointed Special Advocates are volunteers who serve on behalf of children in foster care. When a vulnerable child has a CASA volunteer, they have someone who listens, someone who fights for them, working alongside teachers, social workers, parents, lawyers, and caregivers. A CASA volunteer’s sole mission is to help clear the way for a child to move out of the complex, overburdened foster care system and into a safe, permanent home. Kids with CASA volunteers representing them are half as likely to spend time in long-term foster care as kids without a volunteer. And once CASA kids leave the system, they are much more likely to stay out of foster care - permanently. Last year more than 130 CASA Jefferson volunteers stood up for the abused and neglected children in our community, bringing safety, stability, and hope into their lives.

Hundreds of families with sick kids are sent to New Orleans for medical treatment each year. Ronald McDonald House Charities® of South Louisiana keeps these families together and near the care their children need. Adopt-A-Room is the perfect corporate or individual giving recognition to consider. Sponsoring a room at the New Orleans Ronald McDonald House helps provide a comforting home environment, meals, transportation, and the opportunity for parents to find comfort going through similar difficult situations. Visit rmhc-sla.org/adopt-a-room for all of the details.

Good Work Network (GWN) helps make our economy work for all. Since 2001, we have helped over 2,000 women- and minority-owned businesses grow through education, action planning, and access to opportunity. In New Orleans, where one-third of all small businesses are minority owned, but earn only 2% of all business receipts, this work is more important than ever. Invest in an equitable economy of small, local businesses by giving to GWN this season.

New Orleanians enjoy the best food, music and culture in the country. Shouldn’t we all get to enjoy great neighborhoods too? Rising rents and discrimination are forcing out the very people who make New Orleans special, pushing them further from jobs, good schools, groceries and other resources. Help secure a brighter future for all New Orleans families by supporting the fight against housing discrimination today. To learn more and donate, visit www.gnofairhousing.org.
