NEW ORLEANS CITY PARK 1 Palm Drive | New Orleans, LA 70124 | neworleanscitypark.com

504-482-4888

City Park is as magical and unique as the city of New Orleans. The 1,300-acre outdoor oasis has enchanted New Orleanians since 1850, making it one of the nation’s oldest urban parks. Urban parks are substantial to the general well-being of our communities through direct and indirect health improvement, social cohesion, air quality, water management and economic success. Each year, the Park garners 16 million visits, where guests can stroll under the historic oaks and picturesque moss canopies. 90% of the Park’s annual operating budget is derived from selfgenerated activities, many of which are still closed due to pandemic restrictions. Individual giving helps support Park operations: everything from protecting the grand oaks to planting flowers, maintaining the playgrounds, mowing the grass, and much more. With City Park being at the heart of New Orleans, nearly twice the size as Central Park in New York City, and home to the largest collection of Live Oak trees in the world, the advancement of the Park is vital to our region. Each day, we see many reminders as to how City Park is special for our community, as thousands of our local citizens are taking advantage of our open recreation space.

Preserve and improve City Park spaces for recreational, educational, cultural, and beautification purposes.

Letter from the NEXT MONTH GAMBIT WILL TURN FORTY and for forty years, we have been committed to covering the stories that need to be told in our community, from the positive to negative – our stellar editorial team has always been committed to sharing local news with our loyal readers. And this year we have been on overdrive, from COVID-19 to a devastating storm season in Louisiana to an important election cycle— there have been so many stories to tell.

Publisher

ADOPT-A-NONPROFIT this holiday season

In 2020, we made a commitment to cover first-responders and COVID-19 heroes in our annual 40 under 40 issue, we looked at how COVID-19 has affected our performing arts and music communities, and we partnered with the New Orleans Junior Journalism Project to help give a voice to the youth who are committed to equitable media and journalism integrity. For four decades, Gambit writers have dedicated their livelihoods, and their lives, to telling stories that hopefully move you, entertain you and inform you — but there are always so many more stories to tell.

Non-profits can be adopted too! Gambit’s Adopt-a-Small Business program was designed to help small-businesses and nonprofits, who are struggling to survive amid COVID-19. Through this program, an individual can gift an ad in Gambit at a reduced price and donate that ad to a nonprofit to help share their story. Visit bestofneworleans.com/shopsmall for more details.

That is why every year at this time, we work with our nonprofit partners to share their stories with New Orleanians to promote the significant and meaningful work they are doing in our community. In a time of uncertainty—our nonprofits need you more than ever. From monetary gifts and donations to volunteering this holiday season, we hope that you will find a new nonprofit in Gambit’s 2020 Guide to Giving that you will want to get involved with in the new year. Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast (PPGC) has provided essential services to patients in Louisiana for over 34 years, and is the only provider in Louisiana specializing in reproductive health care for low-income and medically underserved individuals. Our expansive list of services includes contraception care, STI testing and treatment, LGBTQ+ care, including hormone replacement therapy, and new telehealth options that expand our services to cover the entire state — proving vital during a global pandemic.

– Laura S., PPGC Patient

G U I D E

“I left my appointment at Planned Parenthood that day as a new advocate for them. The experience exceeded all expectations. Then, my Pap smear came back irregular. It happens, but when you don’t have insurance that irregularity can be a nightmare financially. Planned Parenthood stood by me.”

Our education and advocacy teams continue to fight forward, despite challenges at the state and federal level, including the dangerous adoption of Louisiana Constitutional Amendment 1. The local charity reopened Ronald McDonald House New Orleans, a home away from home for out-oftown families of seriously ill or injured children needing medical treatment in the New Orleans area in late September. At the Ronald McDonald House, families get a free place to stay, meals to eat, transportation if needed, and a built-in support system where families help one other. Due to COVID-19, most musicians and performers have been unemployed since March, with no end in sight.

Since then, the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic & Assistance Foundation hasn’t missed a beat. We’ve adapted to combat the pandemic’s extensive damage to our music and cultural community by offering local musicians both in person and telehealth medical solutions, appointment-based COVID-19 testing, free food access, expanded mental health resources, musician-specific PPE, and more. Support us to continue these initiatives, so we can help ready our city’s culture makers for whatever comes next. Break down the barriers standing between musicians’ access to the health care they deserve and make sure New Orleans music survives and thrives

To achieve justice for low-income people in Louisiana by enforcing and defending their legal rights through civil legal aid, advocacy, and community education. There is no place like home for the holidays, but this year thousands of our family, friends, and neighbors will be facing eviction in the new year, as federal protections against eviction expire. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic we have seen a 670% increase in requests for legal assistance with unemployment benefits, and a 300% increase in eviction cases as vulnerable families struggle to put food on the table or keep a roof over their heads. SLLS is here to help. Our attorneys are on the front lines fighting for fairness every day to protect families facing dire circumstances. Undoubtedly, these are challenging times. If those of us who have the resources to isolate are feeling the impacts of COVID-19, we know worse is true for those who’ve historically had the least access and societal protection. In 1995, LaFHAC was founded to end all forms of housing discrimination. Twenty-five years later, we remain committed to this mission. We all must play our part in uprooting and rebuilding systems that are designed to oppress. Access to fair housing is a human right. With your generosity, the fight for housing justice continues. Visit https://lafairhousing.org/donate to support this critical work.

We aim to expand the Library’s scope through dollar gifts, program support, and advocacy. Our board, staff, volunteers and members give their time, energy, and financial support in order to ensure the Library has what it needs to thrive as the vital community institution that it is. Friends give away over 300,000 books annually to teachers, senior centers, shelters, hospitals, prisons, and to the 200 Little Free Libraries stewards in Orleans Parish.
