10 your spring garden tips for sprucing up
By Lee Cutrone Photos by Cheryl Gerber
ow is the time to refresh your garden for the warmer months ahead. For many DIYers, that means making a beautiful show of pastel or N vividly colored flowers epitomizing the rebirth of spring, but it also means planning for the summer heat that will follow spring’s mild temperatures. Welcome Home asked local landscape designers for their favorite ways to do both. Whether you choose to plant a colorful display of seasonal flowers or simply tend to the plantings you already have, here are 10 tips to help ensure optimum conditions for a garden of delights. • 1. Out with the old — Just as we perform spring cleaning in our homes, the best place to start in the garden is with a good cleanup. Remove fallen twigs and sticks, cut back dead wood and trim spent blossoms. Trimming will allow you to see things better, visualize new ideas, make room for new growth and help prevent insect problems. “I like to give everything some elbow room,” says landscape designer Kim Alvarez of Alvarez + Basik Design Group. “Give everything a good haircut, except for things about to bloom.” While many people like to clean out the leaf litter left from winter, landscape designer Matthew Ponseti of Ponseti Landscaping calls fallen leaves “nature’s free mulch.” He likes to use them as a layer of insulation beneath a top-dressing of mulch. • 2. Take stock of conditions in your garden — Once everything is clean, it’s a good time to assess challenging areas. Before planting, you need to know whether your soil is healthy, if your flower beds drain and how much sun exposure there is wherever you plant. Landscape designer Kenny Rabalais of the Plant Gallery advises digging 6 to 8 inches for a handful of soil from below the surface, then taking the sample to a good nursery for advice. (Healthy soil is a loose, dark-brown mixture; clay-like soil, sandy soil and soil that hasn’t been touched in years will need some conditioner). Rabalais also recommends checking the amount of sun in the garden at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m., so you’ll know what vegetation will flourish there. Also make sure flower beds are 3 to 6 inches above the lawn line for proper drainage. Rabalais says you always should check the information on plants to determine whether they are sun-loving or shade-loving and how much water they need. • 3. Make a plan — Whether drawn on paper or simply conceived in your mind, a plan will reduce the chance of costly mistakes and will help you determine what you need to purchase. Ponseti recommends drawing of your yard to scale to avoid unorganized planting that fails to make a statement. Landscape designers emphasize the a plan should go beyond what looks good and include considerations such as the maintenance page 11

It really works One gardener follows the experts’ advice By Kandace Power Graves
t all sounded too easy — and kind of derailed my usual lack-of-time excuse for the reason my flowerbeds look like wildflower experiments gone bad — so I thought I Iwould follow the advice of our three expert landscapers and dress up my front yard. It only took a few hours to shape up one bed that’s visible from the street and the overgrown mess that greets visitors in my entryway. It was as easy as they said — and has changed the curb appeal of my home.
Before: This front bed gets a lot of direct sun, especially in the afternoon, and is dissected by a spreading fig tree that will have large leaves. I generally have to replant this bed every spring.
>
Before: Plants had outgrown the space they were planted, and the half-hidden birdbath only emphasized the mess.

required, how large plants will grow and any placements that could be problematic. For example, crepe myrtle trees are beloved in New Orleans, but landscape designers don’t recommend them near driveways or pools because they shed their blossoms and make a mess. Likewise, trees like magnolias, which have shallow root systems, and oaks, which become huge over time, shouldn’t be used around
After: I used groups of flowers, including dark purple petunias, to add a soft texture and vibrant color. I then added yellow, red and white plants in varying heights. Mulch is the finishing touch.
After: Cutting the cornstalk plant (aka Dracaena fragrans) to half its height made the bed less imposing, and adding bright blooms and smaller plants made the space feel organized and serene.
driveways, patios and other areas where roots can cause concrete to crack or shift. • 4. Mulch flower beds — “Everyone’s least favorite thing to do is buying and spreading the needed amount of mulch, but it’s the best thing you can do,” says Ponseti, who favors processed pine needles over other mulch choices and waits to put down new mulch until the oak trees have have finished dropping their leaves. In addition to
keeping weeds at bay and retaining moisture, mulch gives a garden a finished look. • 5. Look for variety — “There are a hundred different shades of green, and different greens and different textures look good together,” Rabalais says. “Different leaf structures, variegated and nonvariegated, different sizes (of leaves) and different colors give character to a garden.” page 12

page 11
• 6. Work with layers — Using layers in your garden will create a lush look. Rabalais suggests starting with the tallest plants in the rear and moving forward with increasingly smaller plants. As a rear layer, Rabalais usually chooses an evergreen because they never defoliate and can hide a fence, brick wall or raised portion of a house. Ponseti recommends using grasses as one of the layers in a less formal yard and boxwood for a more formal look. Alvarez is fond of the contrasting textures achieved with coarse-leaf plants like fatsia coupled with ferns, which have a softer appearance. • 7. Group flowers together for impact — Planting a flat of impatiens all together will create a stronger impact than spacing them apart. Groups of single colors also pack a punch. Alvarez suggests planting flowers in groupings to accentuate focal points like areas near a front door or places where you spend time in the backyard. • 8. Fertilize — Fertilizing during your spring spruce-up will benefit seeds and bulbs that already have come up as well as new plants you’re installing now. The right fertilizer will make your flowers more abundant, and they’ll last longer. The key is to make sure the fertilizer comes in contact with a plant’s root ball. Rabalais’ favorites are a time-released capsule dropped into the soil before putting in a bedding plant, or a liquid fertilizer that requires a little more work but gets into the root system the same day you water your garden. Ponseti’s recommendation for spring is zero-nitrogen fertilizer for the short term and a 15-5-10 blend of fertilizer once your plants begin to grow more aggressively. He also suggests an herbicide for lawns to control clover and dollar weeds. • 9. Incorporate sounds and scents — Truly spectacular gardens are a feast for the senses. Along with using beautiful

displays of springtime color, these landscapers suggest bringing in fragrant plants like gardenia, citrus trees, jasmine and herbs, which lend themselves to side and backyards more than front spaces. The sight and sound of a water feature brings a peaceful, personalized touch to a garden, but landscapers caution that fountains must be regularly maintained. What to look for: a gold filtration system and a base that’s large enough to hold an adequate amount of water without it splashing over the side. For those who want to go maintenance-free, Alvarez recommends a small wall-mountable fountain that can be plugged in and provides instant sound with no hassle. • 10. Make the most of your gardening dollars — Rabalais suggests dividing a 6-inch or 8-inch English ivy into three sections (use a kitchen knife to slice it apart), then planting the sections around the base of a pot of spring flowers. Ponseti suggests buying potted plants at least 4 inches tall, because anything smaller doesn’t have an adequate root system. He says gardeners also should look for double-seeded plants because they are fuller and have a better survival rate. Alvarez says you can find good deals on plants at local farmers markets. If you have a green thumb, plant one or two different types of seeds instead of just using plants purchased from garden centers. Two of Alvarez’s favorites to start from seed are nasturtiums (they’re easy to grow and are edible) and moonflowers (they’ll bloom by late spring or early summer, and their white flowers open in the evening).

GET
organized meet with clients, and they’re feeling so overwhelmed that they’re crying,” NaIdineoften McCoy says.
By Frank Etheridge
>
One might assume McCoy is a psychologist, but while understanding her clients’ personality is crucial to her job, she is part of a burgeoning industry of professional organizers. McCoy, who moved to New Orleans from Florida after marrying a Louisiana native, opened Organized Impressions (504-4212569; www.-organizedimpressions.com) in January 2012. The business helps customers organize everything from office paperwork or a kitchen pantry to a child’s art-project area — and maintain the order. “By the time they call me, they’re already in over their head, so there is often a need for hand-holding,” says McCoy, who also is a space planner. “People would be surprised at how successful some people are at work, but they have just this huge wall between work and home, and home is just, ‘Something I can deal with later.’ “I get to know the client first, just meet them, see if we’re a good fit, because I will be working on such a personal basis — sometimes, I’m literally going through their underwear drawer.” While fairly new to New Orleans, professional organizers have built a niche industry over the past 25 years, with the most established markets in New York and California. Exact services and locales vary, but one constant of the business is the need for professional organizers to understand a client’s psyche. Professional organizer Jill Pollack, host of HGTV Canada’s decluttering show, Consumed, provides an example of this methodology. With a degree in psychology from Columbia University, Pollack says poor relationships with people lead to an over-attachment toward things — which leads to clutter, frustration and, in the worst cases, inner chaos and turmoil. McCoy recalls going to events in New Orleans and hearing reactions ranging from, “You’re exactly the person I’ve been looking for!” to “I can’t believe people pay for you to do that.” After running an ad on Groupon, demand for McCoy’s services skyrocketed. “People needing organization started coming out of the woodwork,” she says.
McCoy understands the root cause of clutter because she became a “mini-hoarder” when, as an 11-year-old, she was allowed to bring only one toy when her family fled East Germany. “I began to hold onto everything,” says McCoy, now 35. She attributes overcoming her hoarding habits to her parents’ staunch German discipline. “There is this belief in America that more is always better,” McCoy says. “So often when a person decides they want to get organized, they run out to the big-box stores and buy all types of storage containers. They think that’s the solution. Then they keep getting frustrated, and then angry, when it doesn’t work. What you should really do is begin with your belongings first, and then consider what would be the best way to arrange them.” Beyond examining the reasons behind (and thus the solutions for) an individual’s disorganized, cluttered work or home space, McCoy says, “Organizing is more of a training program than anything else, creating these basic rules for your life, such as, ‘If you get something out, you put it back.’” A crucial habit to develop is to devote 10 minutes a day to decluttering, starting with one

corner of your home or office and removing things you don’t need, she says. “People say all the time, ‘I just don’t have time,’ because they’ll look at a room full of clutter and think, ‘It’ll take me all weekend, all week, to go through all that,’” McCoy says. “But if you think about how much time you lose looking for a missing item, add that up on a daily basis and it’s a huge amount of wasted time. “Besides understanding the whole psychology as to why it is they hold onto these things they don’t need, the habit of daily decluttering needs to be created in order to be best organized. … Organization is an actual

habit created over and over and over.” McCoy started out as an interior designer. She noticed that many designs did not account for how people actually worked and lived within a space, especially in homes with active, school-aged children, a growing client base for McCoy. “Having a cluttered house when you have children is one of those things that you won’t get around, even if you are really organized,” she says. “So I advise the parents to have a good idea of what it is they want in their house, and from that develop ground rules for what will and what won’t be allowed in the house.” Such personal knowledge, discipline and habit is necessary for someone to become more organized — and pass along those tools to their children. “Kids are sponges,” McCoy says. “If you show them disorganization, they will know disorganization, but if you show them the habit of decluttering, the habit of being organized, then those are the habits they’ll carry to an organized, productive life.”
Nadine McCoy’s tips for establishing order
1 Involve the child as much as possible. 2

Establish a toss out or donation routine. Every three to six months, toss items that are broken or worn out and donate outgrown clothes and toys that no longer interest the child. Find out what is important to the child (toys he or she plays with, favorite stuffed animals), because long-term success comes only when your child participates. When organizing, plan specific zones based on interests or activities such as sleeping, arts and crafts, reading, games, etc. Make use of vertical space as much as possible. Place items such as special collections, decorative or breakable items, higher up. Label everything so it’s easy to find and easy to put away. Using uniformly colored containers provides a calming, cohesive look; containers in a variety of colors visually add to the clutter. Establish a toy routine — such as assigning a personal basket for each child to make picking up toys easy — every night. The daily activity will teach your child personal responsibility — and the fundamentals of organizing. Finally, keep purging.
Make room for baby Maintaining order … beginning at birth efore a baby is born is the perfect time to organize a nursery and other areas to make things easier for sleep-deprived parents, family members and babysitters to find what they need to B take care of the infant. It’s also a habit to establish throughout your child’s early years.
1
One of the biggest organizing mistakes you can make is putting things away only to forget where you put them the next time you need them. Labeling helps avoid having to reorganize. (When you have all kinds of boxes, drawers and more to label, consider using an automated label maker to create labels that are more uniform and neater than handwritten ones.)
2
When organizing a nursery, label the boxes, drawers, etc. where clothes, diapers, bibs, bedsheets and everything else for baby are kept so no one has to dig through drawers and closets looking for what they need.
3
Label all formula and baby food in the refrigerator with a date.
4
Make a noteboard of important phone numbers (parents, doctor, emergency contacts) and notes (allergies, feeding schedule, medications, etc.).
5
If you use day care services, label bottles and personal items to make things easy on your day care provider and avoid mixups.
6
Every couple of months go through clothes and toys and discard or donate items that are too small or you don’t use. If you plan to save baby items, store them in boxes labeled with the clothing size or appropriate age range.
7
For toddlers, you can use a picture on a label (below the words) to help them identify where their things are and where to return them during cleanup. welcome home 17

13 mbracing stylish trends in your home decor can make your rooms stand out E and seem livelier. Some are simple and inexpensive, so pick one and see if it makes you love your home even more.
Pros share what’s hot in home style and toekicks. Chrome and polished nickel appeal both to younger homebuyers and baby boomers who are modernizing their retirement homes. Tall, slender outdoor lanterns in contemporary, cottage and transitional styles will work well in smaller urban spaces. 5. Follow your metal urges — Susan Goldstick, whose Susan Goldstick Inc. manufactures the decorative hardware and hand-painted furniture she designs, predicts home furnishings will shine in 2013. New metal colors such as rose gold and gun metal will be mixed and pierced. Hammered and oxidized textural metals will be especially popular. Vendors will add metal to their wood pieces, and faux animal print metallic will provide texture and reflective light in the textiles arena. 6. Trendy + old equals good style — In the past few years, a foundering economy has influenced people to invest more in their homes and spend more time there. Even as the economy shows signs of improving, however, homeowners still find comfort in “cocooning” in the warmth and safety of their homes, says Graeme Smith, conceptual designer at Second Nature kitchens. Adding an on-trend color, such as cranberry or velvety chocolate, to a soothing palette of muted tones and adding delicate detailing creates timeless interiors. Incorporating vintage pieces into the design fosters feelings of nostalgia, heritage and safety. 7. Wood is good — This year’s trendy furniture boasts reclaimed wood or a synthetic wood that looks reclaimed, according to Lenny Kharitonov, president of Unlimited Furniture Group. Wood and metal combinations are popular, such as a desk with a wood top and an iron base. Thee also senses designers feel a new freedom to mix metals, linen or stone into wood, with

• 1. Add a splash of color — The annual fashion color report from industry leader Pantone, which developed the Pantone Match System (PMS) for color matching, sets the tone for home decor and fashion. The palette of dusk blue, lemon zest, African violet, grayed jade, linen and “tender shoots” is emboldened by Monaco blue, poppy red, emerald and nectarine. Marc Thee, founder of Marc-Michaels Interior Design, the top residential interior design firm in the country, also sees a move toward pure color palettes such as cream and sea grass, khaki and white, or neutral with a pop of yellow. 2. Paper the wall — Repositionable wallpaper will be a decorating mainstay this season, says Todd Imholte, president of Murals Your Way, one of the world’s top online destinations for wall murals. The company produces 10 collections of peeland-stick wallpaper available in patterns and styles such as vintage, dots, flower prints and modern. The wallpaper can be removed and reused hundreds of times without losing its adhesive qualities. The mural company offers color-matching, so it is easy for customers to pair the wallpaper with an existing paint color or updated decor. 3. Smarten your kitchen — New contemporary kitchens will include European frameless laminate cabinetry, multi-tasking appliances, hands-free faucets and increased smartphone and tablet functionality, according to Jamie Gold, a kitchen and bath designer in San Diego, Calif. Value-oriented remodels will remain popular, she predicts, with homeowners incorporating existing flooring, fixtures, cabinets and/or appliances into their design plans to save money and retain favorite design elements. 4. Light up — Jeff Dross, senior product manager at Kichler Lighting, says energyefficient LED products will dominate lighting trends and will be prevalent under and above cabinets, in coves, tray ceilings

the juxtaposition of materials and finishes creating a beautiful combination. 8. Tile may be better — One of the biggest style trends of the year for high-traffic areas is porcelain tile that emulates the look of hardwood flooring, says Lori Kirk-Rolley, senior marketing director at Daltile, a national manufacturer of tile products. The tiles meld the natural beauty of wood with the longlasting durability and easy maintenance of tile. Rectangular tiles — particularly those in long, linear planks — will remain popular in floor and wall applications. 9. Be natural — Consumers’ environmentally conscious focus on using organic, sustainable materials continues, and Orange, Calif.-based Budget Blinds recommends woven wood shades made from bamboo, grasses, jute, reeds, rattan and other renewable resources. Make solid dining room. choices — Exterior design and landscaping can say just as much about a home as its interior architecture and decor. Artist/designer Pablo Solomon, who has been recognized for his environmental designs, says stone, concrete and brick are good choices for the outside of the house because they blend into the environment, require little upkeep and are superior materials to wood decks that are susceptible to weather, metals that are prone to rust and plastics that dull over time. He also sees an increased use of native plants, which he says page 20

can save water and reduce the need for pesticides. 11. Follow the pattern — HGTV designer and television personality Taniya Nayak recommends using a bold pattern — on the wall or on furniture — to give your home design added punch. “No one wants a house that lacks personality,” she says. “The easiest way to infuse your style, while staying on-trend, is with an impactful pattern.” Popular this year are chevrons, a bold V-shaped pattern; geometrics, graphic, colorful shapes that deliver a vintage-modern feel; ombre, a subtle color gradation of similar shades; ikat, trial swirls and diamonds reminiscent of tie-dye; and Moroccan and other culturally inspired exotic motifs. “These powerful patterns can be easily achieved with a fresh coat of paint and a premium painter’s tape,” Nayak says. (She recommends FrogTape, which has PaintBlock technology so people can create intricate patterns.) When using bold patterns and bright colors, it may be best to incorporate the pattern onto one accent wall or window treatments. 12. Mix well — The key to updating your home with the latest trends is
finding a balance, Nayak says. “It’s all about making it personal and adding elements that fit your lifestyle and design personality, without breaking the bank.” One great way to make a big impact on a small budget is to mix materials like modern and industrial details. “The rustic look will be extremely popular in homes in 2013, as it’s elegant and comfortable,” she says. One way to achieve it is by using reclaimed wood in furniture or picture frames. You also can mix different finishes throughout the room. By resisting the urge to match every piece, you’ll have a space that looks current and works nicely. 13. Use your imagination — Just because a product is made for a specific purpose, doesn’t mean you can’t reimagine how it could be used. For example, hanging materials on the wall that are typically used as flooring can be breathtaking. Wood planks or concrete panels add richness and texture.
When using a bold color and a dramatic design together, as seen here with the yellow-andwhite chevron pattern, limit its use to a single wall or area so you don’t dilute the impact.
A hot trend is translating patterns from walls and fashion to furniture — and combining materials such as wood and metal.
