Reinvent and Rise by Dr. Ed Womack
when you wake in the morning. The first 15 minutes of the day will shape and define your day; it sets the tone and it prepares you to face a new day with confidence, conviction and courage. That 15 minutes should entail meditation, consecration and intentional consideration of what is a priority for you that day.
Have you ever wanted to have a new experience? Are you bored with the same old R.U.T (Repetitive Unproductive Thinking)? Are you Ready to do the work required to Rise to your full potential in Life? Well sense you responded with a resounding YES!!! Let’s start with the aspect of Reinventing yourself. That encompasses several characteristics, reinvention and consistency of doing it daily. There is an adage that says if nothing changes, nothing changes! In order to experience a Real Rise in your life, work and play, you will discover your activities must be consistent and set to a new paradigm. This process can begin to yield results in as little as 21 days if applied consistently. That is the same amount of time it takes to change or to create a new habit. It is my estimation that it takes closer to 90 days to enable habit convert it to a way of life. The process of reinventing yourself can be initiated during to very key times of the day, first thing in the morning and the last thing at night. When you wake up, you can and should literally condition your mind to do several things. Likewise, there are things you can intentionally do before you retire at night. Let’s start off with the activities for those first moments 3 - Game Changers Magazine Jan/Feb 2017
Each one of these attributes allows you to zero in on the thing that is the focus of your future. It lets you get your mind right, it allows you to get your mind cleared, to affirm and to develop a mindset so that you can reach the goals that you set. You must ask yourself how can I do better today than I did yesterday? You must also ask yourself, what is the continuous movement to take me from where I am, who I am, to what and who I want to become? These are the questions someone destined to REINVENT must ask themselves. Many times we are afraid of who we can be, literally afraid to ask ourselves those critical questions. We’re fearful of what others may think... as if it matters. We must make up our minds to do one thing better today than we did yesterday. That allows us to overcome the traps, the traps that say we made mistakes so therefore we’re not worthy to continue. It must be understood that those mistakes are necessary to keep the REINVENTION moving forward. No one is perfect, but excellence is an attitude that can be achieved. We can with the first 15 minutes dedicated to a power pursuit and a solid foundation.
The last 15 minutes of the day should have the same consideration. One practice that is life changing is to do breathing exercises. My favorite recommendation is what I call the “Long 8”. It consists of taking eight seconds of slow breathing in and the same 8 seconds of slow breathing out. It helps to slow the heart rate and prepares you for a good night’s rest. Another one of my favorite recommended strategies of REINVENTION is known as Sankofa, which means looking back at what has already happened, to see the mistakes that have been made. But the key isn’t to beat yourself up; the key is to prepare yourself. Sankofa can be tremendously help-
ful in aiding you to begin to look back at all the bad choices, the poor choices, the stupid choices that we may have made. During this Sankofa practice you will learn not to beat yourself up because of the previous choices that were made. The reality is we have all made some bad choices in life at one point or another. For those of us who choose to take REINVENTION seriously, we must learn to acknowledge and recognize the outcomes of those decision for what they were, bad decisions and vow to Do better now that we know better. The Reinvention Recap The Rise and Shine 15 minutes
could ideally start with prayer, silent meditation, an affirmation or anything that can attribute to positioning your mind in a quiet place of peace. While this will not eliminate the obstacles that life naturally brings, it will certainly prepare you to deal far more effectively with the Blows of life that are sure to come The last 15 minutes of the day should also be a calming, quieting of the heart and mind to prepare you for a truly restful sleep. This would also be an ideal time to employ the strategy of Sankofa to reflect upon the things that transpired during the day with the express intention and desire to evaluate and grow from the encounters.
To reinvent yourself means that you no longer ignore the “3 at Me” That would be the three fingers that are pointing back at you on the occasion you dare to point a single finger at any person, place or thing outside of yourself. At the end of the day REINVENTION is primarily an “Inside Job” and it belongs exclusively to you, whether you like it or not. What you do during the day must be erased during the night with sleep, rest and preparation for tomorrow. Sleep is a restorative and rejuvenating experience. When you engage in Proper Prior Preparation for the Powerful Procedure, you are able to REINVENT and RISE.

FREESTYLE UNTITLED
BY CHEYANNE KAMILAH WILLIAMS The hardest thing I had to do was let go of the one I love because I loved me more. As I read his reasons for me leaving, it's always that I went against the will of the Most High. But how does one know the will of another without acknowledging their own? What has always been missing in those expressions of desperation and manipulation was accountablity. The conflict manifested as I became aware of the oppression to be who I truly am. Denying the initiation needed to myself by being what someone wanted me to be came crashing down inevitably. It hurts and still does, but as it hurts I allow healing to nuture me. Calling forth the traumas I buried deep so I could take the initiative to look at me as I've never done before. Im now at a place where I can see, feel and know myself internally without running or hiding from me. Removing the guilt and accepting that I've made the divine deposits that I contracted in my karmic 5 - Game Changers Magazine Jan/Feb 2017
relationships. Free to move forward with closure instead of confusion. Building my realities and destroying the illusions. Welcoming expansion that I once hindered because of sacrificial compromises. Declaring to myself to be fully operative in my truth and nothing else being an option. I tried to hold on and carry the weight but it got too heavy and I dropped the plate, shattering in pieces that were impossible to put back together. Sitting, reflecting, accepting this wasn't meant to be forever. Battling the fear of the 'what ifs' and the 'how woulds'. Remembering that every new beginning provides better tools than what the old one could. Its a new day, a new chapter, creating possibilities of my own happily ever after. Making space for the one who will love me as I Am and as I become. Opening the door to my solitude Screaming FREEDOM. I am no longer on the run.
I'm here.

Are You Looking To Create A New You? by Shana Thornton Happy 2017! It’s a new year and a popular time to execute those much talked about resolutions. Many people talk about new starts. Are you planning to drop the excess weight? Are you wanting to jumpstart your new business? Are you looking to reconnect with a beloved family member? The list can go on indefinitely. Humans tend to want new starts. Now it takes a lot to achieve these new goals. Discipline, a positive attitude and a bit of courage are always needed to complete the tasks. Thus, many people imagine and desire a completely new person with no cloudy past or poor decisions. It seems quite simple, right? No. There is need to create the concept of a new person. Trust me, a new you may not be needed. Smile! A new attitude may just be the magical ingredient for a lot of resolutions. Although you may believe the creation of a new individual would be ideal, the notion is quite unrealistic. It couldn’t happen even if we truly wanted it to. Yet, some individuals daydream about the possibility to no end, which prevents any substantial growth. Some individuals convince themselves that there can never be any real change in their lives because the past
will always exist. Yes, our past experiences are here to stay. I also know that our past experiences do not have to define us. By no way are you forever bound by your past mistakes or circumstances. You can grow and excel. We are all flawed. There is no doubt about this fact. Resolutions are intended to guide us along our path of progress. We all are work in progress. We often want to make edits of our lives along the way. It’s a logical notion. We should not want to completely throw away the blueprint. As one great friend says, “there are a lot of lessons in all messes.” I truly hope you have a successful and productive year. Keep learning and keep inspiring for all of us. Jonathan Fleming:
A Second Chance at Success written by Kameelah Montgomery
13 - Game Changers Magazine Jan/Feb 2017
I
t was a clear and breezy, autumn afternoon in Brooklyn, New York. I hastily parked my car on Atlantic Ave., adjacent to the Soul Spot, a soul food restaurant located in the heart of Brooklyn. I was running a tad bit late for my luncheon meeting with Mr. Fleming, and because of this, I found myself feeling a little out of sorts. As I walked inside the restaurant, I could see him sitting in the back, quietly hovering over a plate of those tasty smothered lamb chops the Soul Spot is so famous for, talking on the phone and feverishly writing something on a pad. When I approached him, he immediately looked up, excused himself from his phone conversation and stood to greet me. Jonathan was a tall man in stature but with a seemingly quiet demeanor. I believe that’s why I immediately began to feel at ease. So, after spending an entire afternoon chatting with him, I soon found the preconceived notion I had of his character to be very true…. I present to you this month’s feature story, Mr. Jonathan Fleming, a real live, second chance, success story. Jonathan has lived in Brooklyn New York all of his life. He was born May 1st, 1962 in St. Johns Hospital. He is now 54 years old. He was raised mostly by his Mother, Patricia Fleming. His Father, Johnny was assaulted in 1988 and passed away when he
was only 26 years old. “After my Father passed, it was only me and my Mother. She was the matriarch of our family. She came to New York when she was pregnant and vowed to always take care of me the best she knew how. Although I veered off the beaten path, so to speak, she tried to instill good values in me and would tell me to always be an honest and loving person. She also
taught me good work ethics. She would say, Work hard and care for others. That’s what’s most important in life”, said Jonathan. At the age of 5, Jonathan and his Mother moved to Marcy projects in 1967. That was the one and only apartment she had until death. He shared with me that growing up his Mother worked as a maid, and he had to watch her get up early every morning to go and
clean other people’s houses. That was very embarassing to him. He wanted to move her out of the projects but she refused. She let him know it didn’t matter where you live, but how you live. So she continued working hard to ensure that she would be able to give him whatever he needed. She had 3 sisters and 3 brothers and she made them also do the same. Jonathan stated, “My Mother was my best friend. I used to tell her she was selfish because she refused to have any more kids. She would laugh and let me know that was never gonna happen. I soon realized she meant every word, for I grew up as an only child.” Although Jonathan loved and adored his Mother, he discovered that whenever he was out of her watchful eye, roaming the mean streets of New York, he became so consumed by it and consequently began a downward spiral into a life of robbery and drugs. He was very violent, which sparked a stream of arrests and subsequently jail time. He was first imprisoned at the age of 21 and spent 8 months. The second time he was arrested he served 2 full years. But in 1989, he was incarcerated and served the longest period of time which was almost 25 years. Ironically, this time, Jonathan had been convicted of a crime he had not committed. One week shy of his first parole board hearing, he was exonerated of all charges and has been
released from prison for about 2 1/2 years. “When my counselor came to my cell and told me I was being released, I literally sat down and cried. My first thought was my Mother. I knew I was going to be able to hold her again after years of feeling hopeless and thinking the opposite for so many years. Even though this particular jail time was not warranted, I realized that my actions led me to be in a place where I could sit and reflect on all the destructive things I had done in my life. My decisions had not only hurt me but everyone in my family. That’s why I’ve decided now that I’ve been released, I am going to do all that I can to make this world a better place and I believe I am on the right path to doing so,” stated Jonathan. Fast forward to present day, I found Jonathan to be simply, a man of God that suffered in prison. He stated that he is not a bitter man but just blessed to have gotten a second chance in life. He shared with me that he is not the person he used to be, but a business man, a motivational speaker and self-proclaimed life coach. Jonathan stated, “I help people. I realize God saved me and put me on a shelf to preserve me, so one day I’ll be able to tell my story. Shortly before I was released I began to seek God. That’s why I’ve started a foundation that helps those who are just getting out of prison and need a helping hand to guide them along 15 - Game Changers Magazine Jan/Feb 2017
their way. I am that helping hand. The Jonathan Fleming Foundation headquarters is located in Jonesboro, Ga. His days are filled with endless phone calls, meetings and interviews. The foundation helps people who are just coming home from prison with housing and employment. Jonathan stated, “If need be, our staff will go to the prison and pick our clients up. Our only focus is to assist them with whatever is needed in order to get them on their feet. We accomplish this by taking a few necessary steps. First and foremost, we provide them with basic counseling. We make sure we know exactly what their goals and aspirations are and provide them with just that. We then locate various agencies that can offer them employment and begin searching for affordable housing once they’ve secured a job. We also help them with transportation, food and clothing. In less than one year, we’ve had 14 clients come through our doors and we are proud to say, so far, we are enjoying a 100% success rate. I want this foundation to continue being a success. Kenneth Thompson, the District Attorney in Brooklyn who helped me, decided to do the right thing by continuing to release our black men that had been falsely accused like myself. To date, he has exonerated 19 prisoners. I think very highly of him because he is bringing long
awaited justice to so many families. He came to my Mothers’ funeral and spoke passionately about how glad he was to be able to give me those years with my mother and also apologized for the pain and suffering I had to endure. Sadly, fifteen months after her funeral, he also passed away from a long bout with cancer. He was a God-send to me. I want to continue where he left off. I have vowed to spend my second chance in life being an advocate for the innocent.” Jonathan’s Foundation extends outside the walls of his building. He is also a motivational speaker in many churches, schools and prisons. He has traveled to many cities sharing his story with the young and old alike.
Jonathan stated, “Whenever I speak at the various schools I tell the youth how important it is for them to continue with their education, get good grades and graduate. I let them know what has happened to me can surely happen to them as well. I then tell them about my past and let them know, if I wasn’t living a riotous and disobedient life, I wouldn’t have ended up in prison. When I have an opportunity to go to the churches, I impress upon the men how important it is for them to be in their sons and daughters lives. I have four sons, Jonathan, Lavaughn, Jamel and Darius. All of my sons, except one, have been to prison. I believe this is a direct result of me not being in their lives. Of course, if I could
do it all again, I would make sure my sons knew their Father and I would raise them to be the young men they were ordained to be.” In just two short years, Jonathan is living out his dreams and is very appreciative for the opportunities that are now being afforded to him. He is indeed grateful to be able to help others and is changing the game in a professional and respectable manner. I was a pleasure spending the afternoon with Mr. Fleming. His parting words to me were, “No matter what you’ve gone through in life, God will see you through. He is never gonna give you something you cannot handle.”
I can truthfully say he is a living example of those words and taking his second chance at success very seriously. Jonathan’s accomplishments: Autobiography: Made Guilty: Proof of Alibi Record label: Dream House Entertainment Real estate owner: Georgia and North Carolina Part owner: Jazzy Browns, an upscale nightclub located in McDonough, Ga. He is also part owner of Dubai Live NC, located in Raleigh, NC. He has written a movie script about his life and is presently looking to have it produced in the upcoming months. Are You Free? By Vincent B. Watkins , JD
By the President of the United States of America: A Proclamation. Whereas, on the twenty-second day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two, a proclamation was issued by the President of the United States, containing, among other things, the following, to wit: “That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free. We are free! The Emancipation Proclamation was preceded by a mindset that is reflected in the 1862 letter of Charles Hazzard. Slavery is likely to be abolished by the war power, and chattel slavery destroyed. This, I and my European friends are in favor of, for slavery is but the owning of labor and carries with it the care of the laborer, while the European plan, led on by England, is capital control of labor by controlling wages. THIS CAN BE DONE BY CONTROLLING THE MONEY.... Chas. Hazzard
While we would like to believe that we are free, we are not. Many of us are tethered to superficial social mediums. We are addicted to mind numbing broadcasts of propaganda marketed as news. We are bound by the invisible shackles of financial debt that keep us chained to dead end jobs that pay us just enough not to quit. Free is not a label that can be so easily attached to many of us. The truth of the matter is that many of us are as much in bondage today as our pre-1865 ancestors were. The challenge that we have before us today is to free our minds from cognitive enslavement that cause us to celebrate the systemic conditions that perpetuate the inhibited lives that we live. We have some real problems plaguing our community. Consider these quick facts: • 70 percent of the households in African America are headed by women. • The leading cause of death for our future leaders is murder. • 1 in three black men will be imprisoned by the State of Georgia. • African Americans makeup 60 percent of the prison population. • And check this out, African Americans make 30 percent of the state’s population, pay 25 percent of the state’s taxes, but only get 1.2 percent of the state’s contracts.
leaders act as overseers and are selected, elected and re-elected to ensure that we remain locked in our limited worlds of poverty, crime, minimalism, depression, neediness, and ignorance. By the aforementioned facts presented, the overseers are impactful. Our freedom is challenged by the perpetuation of ignorance that is spread through self-denigration and the casual assault on our self-respect through the abusive use of labels such as of Niggers, Bitches, and Hoes. It’s as if we are taking our cues from Willie Lynch himself.
pation Proclamation. I am talking about the freedom to take control of your life and the freedom to dare to believe that you can change the world around you. The freedom to fight against the status quo and not accept what you are told your reality will be. We live in a world where possessing the freedom to think for yourself is frowned upon. We accept underperforming businesses, educators, spiritual leaders, and elected officials because we feel we have no control of our lives. That is only true if we allow it to be. People be brave so that you can be free!
As we inventory the world that we live in, we could go on and on about the problems we are facing. Issues of crime, racial discrimination, failing schools, underperforming elected officials, and pimps posing as preachers hustling to fatten their pockets, monopolize our headlines. When I talk about being free I am not talking about the Emanci-
I submit to you that these conditions are not the products or results of free people, but rather enslaved people. Though we have status, position, and the material accouterments that accompany, many of us are not free. Many of our so-called Game Changers Magazine Nov/Dec 2016 - 18

How do I get grants for my business that is not a nonprofit? look at your local college site and state representatives. Remember, you need the resources to manage the grant. An award will require an audit of some type and exposure that will involve public information about your company. by DeaRonda Harrison Here’s the #1 question I get asked. How do I get grants for my business that is not a nonprofit?
What problem does your business solve?
Foundations, government agencies, and individuals give grants to people with a record of success, not an idea. You may have heard of Dr. Hadiyah Nicole Green. She is a black female doctor that is developing a solution to diminish cancer cells. She recently won a $1.1 million grant to further develop her laser-activation to treat cancer. The VA Office of Research and Development made the award that includes 5 years of research at $200,000 per year. Ms. Green is providing a solution to a disease that takes the lives of millions of people each year.
• training for new and current employees that can be costly for the business • a need for special equipment typically $1m or higher to expand in new markets to improve sales • building improvement or repairs • new technology to improve innovation and need resources to make it happen
What unique product or services will your grant support? You have to properly communicate to funders and be able to speak their language. Do not say, “I need more money for my business. ”You have to speak on how grant dollars will improve a community.
Here are some examples:
Improvement in either of these areas will provide more jobs, which will produce more taxes and increase spending to advance a neighborhood. A grant given to a for-profit business goal is to improve the local or state economy. Typically, grant awards are through economic development at the state or local level i.e., USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) site. Also,
Grants through state and local organizations and nonprofits provide support for • campaigns for tourism • energy efficient technology and • expanding childcare facilities Can you tie your project to some of these for-profit funding opportunities? If not, you can consider a small business loan. Here are a few small interest
loans for specific business types. Loans to Start Businesses in Towns with Less than 50,000 people: Purpose to supply loans to start or improve business and develop industry and employment in rural areas specifically with a population of less than 50,000. Help for Minority-Owned Companies: Purpose to provide funding to private organization to fund management, technical assistance and training services to minority-owned small businesses. See Administrator for Management and Technical Assistance, Office of Business Development Grants to Inventors of
Energy-Related Projects: Purpose to fund the development of energy-related inventions, specifically inventions and innovations grants, advisory services, and technical information. See Department of Energy Grants to Organizations that Assist Women-Owned Businesses: Purpose to get grants paid to private non-profit organizations to conduct demonstration projects for the benefit of women-owned or controlled small businesses. See Office of Women’s Business Ownership, Small Business Administration Loans to Young Entrepreneurs and Small Firms: Purpose to distribute loans to purchase equipment, provide funds for operating
expenses and finance youth projects. See SBA Millennial Entrepreneurs For more grant options or to see what is available for your particular business. Looking for start-up help - Small Business Development Center in your area. SCORE offers free business mentors in your area. Look into crowdfunding whose goal is to gather small investors through a collection of people who pool their money and resources together to fund your business.
