"Modeling healthy habits for your children not only benefits their well-being but also encourages them to prioritize their health." As a Board-Certified Pediatrician, I often engage in delicate conversations with patients and their families. One challenging dialogue centers around weight—a sensitive topic that may evoke discomfort due to its associated stigma and shame. However, creating a safe space for discussing weight is crucial, especially considering the medical complications that can arise from obesity, such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and more. The alarming rate at which children and adolescents are diagnosed with obesity —19.7% of American children—is concerning. The good news is that obesity can be prevented. Modeling Healthy Behavior: It's vital for parents to lead by example in adopting healthy habits. Demonstrating intentional efforts towards personal health can inspire children to follow suit. This includes maintaining a healthy weight, reducing the risk of diabetes and hypertension, strengthening muscles, and improving sleep. Outdoor physical activity also contributes to better mental health for children.
