The fourth largest estuary in the United States is the Mobile bay having a discharge of rate of 62,000 cubic feet of water per second

Mobile Bay covers an area of 413 square miles. It is 31 miles long and can have a maxim width of 24 miles. The deepest parts of the bay are found within the shipping channel having an average depth 10 feet.

Mobile Bay is an inlet of the Gulf of Mexico. The mouth is formed by the Fort Morgan Peninsula and Dauphin Island. The bay is considered an estuary because the Mobile River and Tensaw River empty into the northern end.

Scuba Dive Key Largo, Florida Saturday May 17 - Tuesday May 20

Come join Campus Recreation and Outdoor Adventures as we go scuba diving in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, Florida. FAST FACTS

Scuba stands for "Self-contained underwater breathing apparatus"

Once you get below 10 meters depth, you can't see red or yellow! If you cut yourself your blood looks blue. Sound travels five times faster underwater than in air, which makes it almost impossible to establish where sound is coming from, as we rely on the time difference between our ears to do so

QUESTIONS? Contact Randy Hunter at rhunter@southalabama.edu

Established in 1963, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park was the first undersea park created in the United States. The park, combined with the adjacent Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, encompasses 178 nautical square miles of coral reefs, sea grass beds and mangrove swamps. These areas were established to protect and preserve the only living coral reef in the continental United States.

There will be two days of driving (1600 miles roundtrip) and two days of diving. Six people are required for the trip to make. The cost for three nights of camping and transportation is $110 per person. Dive costs will be dependent upon what gear you will need to rent and how many dives you want to do over the two full days of diving we will have available. We will probably dive with the folks operating out of John Pennekamp (check their website for prices.) Other dive companies go to more secluded spots but are more expensive. When six people have signed up for the trip, a meeting will be scheduled to discuss logistics.
