The Islands of Antigua and Barbuda are strategically located in the Leeward Islands, literally in the Heart of the Caribbean, best known for their deeply indented coastline, natural harbours and protective coral reefs, rolling hills and white sandy beaches. Starting off Fort Charlotte outside English Harbour, the 600-nautical-mile course offers fantastic sailing around some of the most stunning islands in the world.

ANTIGUA CARNIVAL

JULY / AUGUST

Le carnaval est le roi incontesté des festivals culturels. Ayant vu le jour à l’époque des colonies pour fêter l’émancipation des esclaves noirs d’Amérique (en 1834), il commence la dernière semaine de juillet et dure jusqu’au premier mardi du mois d’août. On l’appelle Jumpin’ n’ Jammin’, et c’est une fête colorée et émouvante. Les activités se déroulent dans les rues de St. John’s et à l’Antigua Recreation Ground qui se transforme en “Carnival City” pour cette occasion. Toute l’île vit le carnaval comme une fête, avec des danses dans la rue, des costumes magnifiques, des concours de steel band et de musique calypso et avec l’élection du roi et de la reine du carnaval. Le moment principal de la fête a lieu le premier lundi du mois d’août quand, à quatre heures du matin, les feux de joie s’allument et commence le J’ouvert morning (prononcer juvei): tout le monde se retrouve dans les rues de la capitale pour former un immense serpent dansant. On this island the pinnacle of all cultural celebrations is Carnival, elements of which are deeply rooted in the original festivities that were held to celebrate the emancipation of slavery in 1834. This is a ten day event that begins in the last week of July and ends during the first week of August. The festival features colourful parades, Carnival queen pageants, the local calypso, soca and steel pan music competitions and live entertainment on the streets. The culmination is two days of dancing and revelry in the streets of St. John’s, with carnival bands full of merrymakers dressed in elegantly decorated, colourful costumes.

ANTIGUA MANGO FEST • AUGUST

Une fête entièrement consacrée à la mangue, ce fruit délicieux qui se décline en vingt variétés sur l’île. Les passionnés, les chefs professionnels et les agriculteurs se réunissent pour célébrer la cueillette de ce fruit exotique exquis. Cela entraîne une compétition intense où les chefs et les “bar tenders” se défient dans un concours de cuisine en plein air avec des recettes à base de mangue naturellement ! A food and drink festival dedicated to the local fruit - Antigua is said to have over twenty different varieties of mango. This is a time when amateur and professional chefs, as well as farmers, come together to celebrate the harvest of this delectable, exotic fruit. The competition is stiff as local chefs and bartenders use the opportunity to attempt to outdo each other in concocting their great mango recipes. Held at the end of July as part of the Mango Festival, the Cades Bay Pineapple Farm holds Pineapple Awareness Day, an open day with a 30-minute walking tour of the farm, pineapple tasters and light drinks.

STEPS TO BE MARRIED IN ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA

The ceremony is held by the registrar between 6 am and 8 pm. Two witnesses must be present. You can get married in the courthouse or elsewhere for a small additional cost. It is also possible to have a traditional church service although this will take a little longer as you will need authorisation from the local ecclesiastical authorities who might require you to attend a short prenuptial course. Weddings on the island are legally valid and, of course, all documents produced must be the originals, in the correct name.

J.-C. d’une peuplade pacifique, les Arawaks. Ceuxci avaient un grand talent pour la céramique dont des restes ont été trouvés dans toutes les îles des Caraïbes. Ils s’installèrent à Antigua où ils construisirent de petits villages sur les côtes, et y vécurent jusqu’à l’invasion des bien plus aguerris et féroces Caribes. Il paraît que les Arawaks avaient la tête légèrement pointue parce que, dès leur naissance, ils déformaient les os du crâne des enfants à l’aide de petites planches de bois serrées par un bandage étroit. La forme du crâne était encore accentuée par une touffe de cheveux qui retombait sur la tête rasée, pour rendre leur aspect agressif et effrayer les envahisseurs éventuels. Mais leur tempérament était tranquille : ils vivaient de la pêche et de la culture du maïs et du manioc. Dans leurs tribus guidées par les caciques se distinguait le chaman qui était en contact avec les esprits et pratiquait les rites religieux et la divination. Les Arawaks faisaient usage de tabac (qu’ils fumaient avec une pipe particulière ou enroulé en cigares) et d’une liqueur dérivée du maïs. The earliest people to live in Antigua and Barbuda were primitive people who probably arrived from South America about 2,000 BC. They were followed by seafaring Arawak-speaking farmers and fishermen about 200 bc. The Arawaks were skilled in the art of pottery making and they settled in villages around our coastlines. It is said that they had slightly pointed heads, as their skulls were deformed by using pieces of wood strapped tightly to their heads when they were children. A tuft of hair on top of the shaven head accentuated this shape. They were a peaceful people, catching fish and growing corn and cassava. Their tribes were ruled by a chief, or cacique. Their religious leader, the shaman who was in contact with the other world and performed religious rites and divination was held in great respect. The Arawaks used tobacco, which they smoked in a special kind of pipe, or rolled into cigars, and drank a liqueur made from corn. In 600 AD their peaceful existence was disturbed by the arrival of a warlike tribe from the Amazon forest, the Caribs. Their name derives from the Spanish word caribal, meaning cannibal. The Caribs conquered and occupied all the lands of the Arawaks. In 1492 Columbus sighted the island of Watling in the Bahamas, paving the way for Spanish colonisers. He was followed by the English, French and Dutch, who fought for dominion over the islands. Although Colombus never landed on Antigua he named the island in honour of Santa Maria de la Antigua, the saint he worshipped in Seville. Antigua remained under the rule of the English with only a brief takeover by the French in 1666. Once

returned to the crown with the Peace of Breda in 1667, Antigua became an important colonial naval base. An arsenal was built in English Harbour, a natural hurricane hole, and the British fleet was stationed at the port. Its most famous commander, Horatio Nelson, is commemorated here at Nelson’s Dockyard. Antigua’s soil was most suitable for intensive farming. When the demand for sugar increased from the 17th century the island became known for the production of sugar cane. As local labour was not sufficient, this period saw the rise of the slave trade where shiploads of people were transported over from the African colonies. The socalled ‘slave triangle’ worked as follows: European ships docked in Africa, particularly West Africa, laden with cargoes of little value. The goods were offered to slave traders in exchange for strong healthy people who could cope with the inhuman conditions of the sea voyage (which could last up to three months) and, once across the Atlantic, would be a reliable workforce for labour in the fields and sugar plantations. The triangle was completed with the ship’s return to Europe laden with sugar and other goods obtained from the sale of slaves to landowners. The abolition of slavery in 1834 and the subsequent introduction of the process of sugar beet refining in Europe led to the decline in sugar cane cultivation. An important event took place in the early years of the last century, when, in 1914, the USA reached an agreement with Panama for the opening of the famous canal. Since that time America has had a strong influence on the area. Between the two world wars, a new ethnic group arrived on the island: the Syrians and Lebanese. They came to Antigua as small traders and integrated well into the community, operating in a range of businesses. The end of World War II marked the beginning of the process which would lead to independence from Great Britain. In 1967 Antigua and Barbuda became an Associate State, answering to the UK only in matters of foreign policy and defence. In November 1981, Vere Bird, the Prime Minister and charismatic leader of the independence movement led the country to independence. Today, Antigua and Barbuda are part of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), which promotes economic co-operation, trade and joint action on major common problems. Since the 1960s the two islands have gradually abandoned their agricultural economy, transforming themselves into a tourist paradise.

Les fleurs magnifiques, dont certaines, comme le flamboyant et l’hibiscus sont les symboles de l’île, ont été pour la plupart “importées”. La superbe bougainvillée arrive de la Méditerranée, mais elle présente ici des dimensions et des couleurs uniques.

FAUNE

Sur la terre ferme, une des espèces à admirer est celle des hérons ; sur les côtes, les hirondelles de mer, les pélicans, les pétrels et les frégates, de grands oiseaux de mer dont les ailes déployées mesurent deux mètres, vivent à Barbuda dans une oasis réservée. Au dix-neuvième siècle, pour arrêter la prolifération des reptiles venimeux on introduisit un petit mammifère féroce, la mangouste, d’ou la disparition des serpents. Les insectes sont rares tandis que les rainettes vertes, avec leur coassement typique, sont beaucoup plus répandues Les moutons, les vaches et les chèvres sont nombreux : ils furent introduits sur l’île par les premiers colons. Les fonds marins abritent des poissons de toutes les couleurs, que l’on aperçoit facilement en plongeant avec masque et tuba.

WILDLIFE

One of the many species that can be found inland is the heron while on the coast look out for terns, pelicans and petrels. Frigate birds have a wingspan of up to 2 metres and their own nature reserve on Barbuda. In the 19th century the mongoose was introduced to Antigua in order to control the spread of poisonous snakes which eventually disappeared altogether. Insects are rare whereas the croak of the green tree frog can be heard often. The island is home to cows, sheep and goats brought over by the first colonists and the ocean holds tropical fish of all colours which can be seen easily with a mask and snorkel.

not only the island’s history but also its plant life which is permanently stamped with the passing of its foreign conquerors. Many species were brought over by the Europeans who introduced them from their other colonies. The native vegetation consists mainly of shrubs and includes rainforest plants like giant bamboo, rubber trees, mahogany, creepers and numerous varieties of orchid and climbing plants like philodendrons. On the coast grow acacia and fig trees, succulents and agaves. A common sight around the lagoons and hurricane holes is the mangrove whose roots help to hold onto sand and coral fragments, making it an essential part of sea ecology. Many of the island’s flowers are foreign, like the flamboyant which originated in Madagascar and Egypt, and hibiscus, both of which have settled in so well as to become emblems of the island. The beautiful bougainvillea was originally a Mediterranean plant but here comes in different sizes and beautiful bright colours. Coconut palms which are so much part of the image of the Caribbean were imported from India with the papaya and the mango. Almost all the island’s edible species come from other parts. Captain Bligh of ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ fame brought the breadfruit tree to the Antilles from Tahiti. He was transporting a cargo of saplings to plant on the islands in order to provide low-cost food for the slaves working on the sugar plantations. Sugar cane itself came from other tropical regions and replaced most of the area’s rainforest. The avocado and the guava originated in Brazil, cocoa came from Central America and the banana was brought over from the Canaries. The earliest inhabitants of the Lesser Antilles cultivated cassava from which tapioca is made and it too played an important role in feeding the slaves cheaply. One of the island’s indigenous trees is the manchineel. Its fruit, which looks like small green apples, has a pleasant scent but is inedible - it can cause violent gastro-intestinal upsets and can even be fatal to children.

On the road between Jolly Harbour and Johnson’s Point this long white beach boasts a wealth of stunning colours. It is very popular with the locals who come here mainly on Saturdays and Sundays. There is also a small restaurant and a bar.

On the west coast and accessible through the Hawksbill Beach Hotel is a series of four beaches. The third beach is the island’s only nude beach.

C’est probablement une des plus belles plages d’Antigua. On y arrive en suivant un sentier qui part de la forêt tropicale (environ une heure et demie à pied), ou bien à pied ou en tout-terrain à partir de Falmouth, en suivant la route qui conduit au Spring Hill Riding club, ou en bateau.

•Pour arriver à cette charmante plage vierge située sur la côte sud-ouest, il faut suivre un chemin de 300 mètres à partir de la route principale qui relie Jolly Harbour et Johnson’s Point.

Half Moon Bay is situated on the east coast and takes its name from its distinctive shape. It is an ideal place for body surfing or you can swim in the calm waters on the left hand side of the beach. It is a popular beach with the locals who visit it mainly at weekends.

Perhaps one of the most beautiful beaches in Antigua, it can be reached along a path that leads from the rain forest. The walk will take one and a half hours. Other options to reach this beach are by boat or a 4 X 4 vehicle from Spring Hill Riding Club.

This long beach is on the southwest tip of the island. You can buy a snack or relax with a drink at Turner’s, a local restaurant. A little further along the beach is OJ’s Bar & Restaurant, an excellent place to sample fresh fish and lobster at reasonable prices, and other lovely restaurants.

Situated on the southwest coast, Ffryes Bay lies alongside the road between Jolly Harbour and Johnson’s Point. It is accessible along 300 metres of road. At the western end is Dennis Bar & Restaurant.

Pigeon Beach is situated in the English Harbour area at the end of a short dirt road that runs behind the Antigua Yacht Club. The beach slopes gently down into crystal-clear waters. On the beach is Bumpkins, a nice local beach restaurant.

Galley bay: Un endroit idéal pour les surfeurs, bien que cette plage située à l’Ouest de l’île comporte également une partie très calme, convenant parfaitement aux baignades. C’est là qu’est implanté l’hôtel du même nom, composé de charmants bungalows, que l’on peut rejoindre par la petite route du village de Five Islands. Dickenson Bay, la plus fameuse, est entourée d’une série de grands hôtels : on peut y pratiquer tous les sports nautiques, et le soir elle devient un lieu de rencontre et de divertissement. Fort James, est la plage la plus proche de St. John’s. Son nom vient du roi qui qui régnait à l’époque où fut construit le fort. Jolly Beach: presque entièrement occupée par le resort du même nom, elle a un accès public juste derrière l’entrée principale de l’hôtel. St. James’s Club dont l’accès se fait par l’hôtel, qui propose des tarifs à la ½ journée ou à la journée avec de nombreuses activités. Runaway Bay se trouve sur la côte nord-ouest de l’île, non loin de St. John’s : c’est une longue plage blanche qui contraste avec la couleur turquoise de la mer. Dutchman’s Bay: près de l’aéroport, est une autre plage bien protégée par les récifs, que les passionnés de windsurf connaissent bien. Deep Bay: est une belle plage à proximate de St. John’s. Jabberwock Beach Située sur la côte nord de l’île, où l’on trouve une école de kite surf, un sport acrobatique amusant à pratiquer et à regarder.

Long Bay, beyond Devil’s Bridge, is protected by reefs and is excellent for swimming. There you can spend a day by renting a beach chair and umbrella and having a relaxed lunch at La Tartaruga in a total Italian/Caribbean atmosphere.

OTHER BEACHES

Galley Bay Facing the west, this is the ideal place for surfing fans. althought one end of the beach has a very calm sea, perfect for a relaxing swim. The beach is reached from Five Islands Village. Dickenson Bay, the most famous beach on the island, fronts several big hotels. Here you can practise water sports and in the evening the beach becomes a popular meeting place. Fort James located at Fort Bay is the nearest beach to St. John’s and takes its name from the king who reigned at the time the fort was built. Jolly Beach is almost entirely taken up with the resort hotel of the same name. The public entrance is just behind the main entrance to the complex. St. James’s Club’s private ‘all-inclusive’ beach has many attractions which you can visit for a half or full day. Runaway Bay, on the northwest coast of the island not far from St. John’s, is a long white beach set against the turquoise sea. Dutchman’s Bay is near the airport. Les fruits et les légumes locaux sont saisonniers, normalement ils sont abondants d’avril à octobre. L’importation de fruits tropicaux provient généralement de l’île de la Dominique. Les fruits locaux sont représentés principalement par le fameux black pineapple, une variété d’ananas très sucré qui ne pousse qu’à Antigua, à la forme conique et allongée, mais aussi par plusieurs variétés de mangue, par la papaye, les oranges vertes, le fruit de la passion, la goyave, les bananes comme les fingers bananas, petites et très sucrées. Certaines bananes vertes, les plantains, sont employées comme des légumes cuits, dans la cuisine locale.

LE POISSON

La mer abonde de poissons, comme le mérou (grouper), pagel (snapper), king fish, et le mahi mahi (appelé aussi dolphin fish) ainsi que le wahoo; sans oublier les crustacés comme la langouste, cuite sur les braises du BBcue, ou des mollusques comme les lambis (Conch).

COCKTAILS ET BOISSONS

A Antigua la liqueur par excellence est le rhum, produit par distillation de la mélasse qui lui confère sa couleur ambrée. On le fait vieillir normalement de trois à sept ans. Il constitue la base de bon nombre de cocktails et de long drinks. Une mention particulière va à l’English Harbour Rum, produit sur place et vieilli en fût de chêne pendant cinq ans minimum, qu’on sirote comme un cognac et que les connaisseurs qualifient de: léger, excellent et savoureux. La tradition du Happy Hour est répandue à Antigua : généralement entre 16 heures et 19 heures, on boit deux drinks pour le prix d’un. Partout dans l’île on boit beaucoup de bière, boisson idéale pour se désaltérer et rétablir l’équilibre salin. Les marques les plus répandues sont la Wadadli locale, la jamaïcaine Red Stripe, la Carib de Trinidad et la Heineken, ainsi que quelques marques européennes et américaines. Les caves des hôtels et des restaurants sont très bien achalandées de vins internationaux pour tous les goûts et tous les portefeuilles.

Local fruit and vegetables are seasonal, the height of which is between May and October. A variety of thin, tall, sweet pineapple only grown in Antigua is the famous black pineapple. There are many varieties of mango, paw-paw (papaya), passion fruit, guava, green orange, banana and finger banana. Antiguan fruit is supplemented with fruit imported from the neighbouring island of Dominica.

FROM THE SEA

The sea around the island has a wealth of fish and shellfish, grouper, king fish, dolphin fish, mackerel, snapper and wahoo are all found in the region’s many fish dishes. Lobster is usually barbecued and served with Creole-style rice and spices.

DRINKS

Antigua’s most popular liquor is rum, a white or amber liquid distilled from molasses and aged for three to seven years. English Harbour Premium Rum is aged in oaken casks for a minimum of 5 years and is described by rum connoisseurs as an impeccably smooth, lightbodied rum. Try it here and buy it to take home with you. Beer is widely consumed on the island: it’s the ideal drink for quenching the thirst and restoring the body’s salt levels. The most common brands are the local Wadadli, from the original Arawak name for Antigua, Jamaican Red Stripe, Carib from Trinidad and some European and American brands. The island’s hotels and restaurants have well-stocked wine cellars. French, Italian, Californian, Southern Australian, Chilean, South African and other wines are available in most restaurants and wine shops. The proud tradition of ‘happy hour’ is generally between 4 pm and 7 pm.

Un court sentier conduit aux 3 premiers ponts suspendus (longs de plus de 100 mètres), de là on poursuit avec une série de charnières et de ponts suspendus reliés à des éléments de défi qui, sans besoin de force physique, offrent une occasion fantastique d’admirer de haut la végétation, les animaux, et surtout les nombreuses espèces d’oiseaux. There are a number of guided coach tours offered by tour operators and local agencies and this is the best way to get an all-round view of the island. If you decide to go public, local buses are generally small 14-seaters and will take you wherever you want to go at a low cost. Many tourists find it a good way to immerse themselves in the local culture. Bear in mind that quite long waits are possible, especially on routes that require a bus change. There are regular and request stops all over. The main starting points in St. John’s are the East Bus Station near the memorial in Independence Avenue which covers routes to the south-east, and the West Bus Station opposite St. John’s Market where you can catch buses to the south of the island and English Harbour. De son côté, la route principale suit la côte avec une vue sur Cades Bay et de vastes aperçus de la végétation tropicale qui couvre les flancs des collines, jusqu’au village de Old Road. De là, la route se dirige vers l’intérieur et traverse la partie la plus épaisse de la végétation tropicale. C’est le Fig Tree Drive : la route devient plus tortueuse et ombragée par les arbres à pain, les manguiers, les avocatiers et les bananiers. A la fin de Fig Tree Drive on arrive à un stop d’où, en tournant à droite, on emprunte la route qui conduit à English Harbour en traversant les villages de Liberta et Falmouth. Un trajet intéressant réservé aux toutterrain part du village de Liberta vers Table Hill, sur lequel se dresse l’imposant Fort George, long de plusieurs centaines de mètres et construit avec la pierre verte d’Antigua, qui offre une vue particulière sur Flamouth et English Harbour. En descendant et en tournant à droite à Table Hill on emprunte un chemin en terre battue (uniquement pour les tout-terrain) qui aboutit au nord de Bethsda, et le long duquel on rencontre des lamas péruviens. Il faut encore visiter Nelson’s Dockyard à English Harbour, la base navale de l’Amiral Nelson à l’époque de la canne à sucre parfaitement conservée, qui a gardé le charme de son époque. D’English Harbour on peut monter à Cape Shirley, situé dans une position particulièrement privilégiée qui offre une

The road continues winding round the heights of the Shekerley Mountains. At 402 metres, Mount Obama is the highest peak and can be reached only by jeep along a dirt track that turns off the main road near the pineapple plantation; the best views of the island can be seen from the top. The main road continues on to the coast, with views of Cades Bay, until it reaches the village of Old Road. From here it turns back towards the hills, passing through thick tropical vegetation. This is Fig Tree Drive which winds through groves of breadfruit, banana, mango and avocado trees. At the end of Fig Tree Drive is a stop sign where a right turn leads to English Harbour via the villages of Liberta and Falmouth. From Liberta a jeep will take you to Table Hill, site of the imposing Fort George, built in Antiguan green stone, from where there is a surprising view of Falmouth and English Harbour. Another must-see is Nelson’s Dockyard at English Harbour, the naval base of Admiral Nelson some hundred years ago; perfectly preserved, it retains all its historic charm. Today it is an internationally renowned sailing port thanks to the regatta that attracts sailors from all over the world (see our section on events). From English Harbour the road rises to the stunningly situated

Après la visite à Shirley Heights, où l’on peut déjeuner, on reprend le chemin qui conduit à Liberta et on poursuit vers le village de All Saints. Cape Shirley from where you can get a magnificent view over the south coast, Mamora Bay, and, on a clear day, Guadeloupe. The right-hand branch of the road climbs up the hill overlooking English Harbour, ending in the fortified complex of Fort Shirley built by Thomas Shirley, former governor of the Leeward Islands and Nelson’s great rival. Parts of the complex are still standing, including the quarters of the Royal Artillery which now contains a museum, and, higher up, the old guard house which is now a restaurant with excellent views over the yacht-filled English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour. TOUR C : A TRAVERS L’ILE Un autre itinéraire intéressant conduit à la vaste Willoughby Bay, protégée par des bancs de corail. Le trajet est tortueux mais il offre des points panoramiques spectaculaires sur la baie. Le parcours termine par une bifurcation : une route descend à Half Moon Bay, qui est considérée la plus belle plage d’Antigua, entourée d’une baie en demi-cercle de sable blanc, et l’autre, après avoir traversé le village de Freetown, conduit à Nonsuch Bay où se trouve Harmony Hall. Pour rejoindre la partie nord de Nonsuch Bay il faut retourner en arrière et se diriger vers le nord, puis vers le nord-est, vers le village de Willikies. Au bout du chemin, on trouve à gauche Long Bay, une plage de sable blanc protégée par la barrière de corail et, à droite, le Devil’s Bridge, un arc naturel produit par l’érosion des vagues, où l’Océan écume. Le spectacle panoramique de la toute proche Indian Town Point sur Nonsuch Bay, avec ses bancs de corail et l’Atlantique, est une merveille.

TOUR D : PLAGES ET RELAX Un court itinéraire à parcourir même en une seule matinée, qui peut être fait en taxi au départ de St. John’s jusqu’à la plage de sable corallien de Runaway Bay. Après un plongeon dans cette eau pure et turquoise, on peut déjeuner dans l’un des restaurants de la toute proche Dickenson Bay.

One of the most popular excursions leads from St. John’s along Factory Road to Betty’s Hope, Antigua’s first sugar cane plantation, founded in 1674 by Christopher Codrington and dedicated to his daughter Betty. The mill has been restored and fitted out as a small museum dedicated to sugar production in the 18th and 19th centuries. Leaving Betty’s Hope continue towards Long Bay and Devil’s Bridge, a natural rock arch produced by the erosion of the sea. TOUR C: ACROSS THE ISLAND Another route worth taking is the one towards the enormous Willoughby Bay, protected by coral reefs. The road winds sharply but opens out onto spectacular views over the bay. The route then splits into two, one of which descends to Half Moon Bay, a crescentshaped bay of white sand considered to be Antigua’s most beautiful beach. (The other passes through the village of Freetown and leads to Harmony Hall). On your way back from Half Moon bay before Frankie’s Gas Station at Lavingstons turn right and then right again on the next T junction towards the village of Willikies which still maintains all its Caribbean flavour and drive through it. At the end of the road a left turn leads to Long Bay, a lovely white sandy beach sheltered by coral reefs. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Devil’s Bridge, a natural rock arch created by the erosion of the crashing Atlantic waves. From the nearby Indian Town Point, the view of Nonsuch Bay is spectacular.

TOUR D: BEACH TOUR This half-day trip leads from St. John’s to the coral sands of Runaway Bay. After a swim in the unpolluted turquoise ocean, have lunch at one of the many restaurants in nearby Dickenson Bay.

Avec son réseau de rues, ses zones piétonnes et ses quartiers commerçants et historiques, St. John’s, la capitale, doit absolument être visitée à pied pour en saisir toutes les nuances les plus typiques. Ainsi vous pourrez découvrir la zone piétonne d’Heritage Quay, avec les magasins et les boutiques de luxe ou l’ancienne zone de Redcliffe Quay, un peu plus au sud, anciennement le marche aux esclaves et, plus tard, des entrepôts généraux. A présent c’est un havre de paix agréable et ombragé tourné vers la mer, où l’on se rend volontiers pour une halte de repos loin de la capitale chaude et grouillante de monde. Plus au nord, Long Street accueille, dans l’ancien édifice de la Court House, le Musée d’ Antigua et Barbuda avec des objets archéo-logiques de la civili-sation Siboney (qui a précédé les Arawaks et les Caribes) il y a environ 4000 ans. En suivant Church Street on arrive à la cathédrale, construite une première fois en bois en 1681, reconstruite en briques en 1720 et ensuite en pierre grise (1848), avec l’intérieur en sapin américain pour résister aux tremblements de terre et aux ouragans. Market Street conduit jusqu’à l’extrémité sud de la ville, où se tient le marché. Les meilleurs moments pour la visite sont le vendredi et le samedi matin, quand le marché est plus animé et plein de fruits et de produits locaux. Le marché artisanal se tient aussi tout près de là.

A STROLL ROUND ST. JOHN’S

The best way to absorb the distinctive sights and sounds of the lively capital, St. John’s, is on foot. In this way you will discover its network of streets, its pedestrian areas and its historic and commercial districts. Shop duty free in Heritage Quay’s luxury stores and boutiques and further south find the historic area of Redcliffe Quay which was formerly the site of the town’s slave market. Today it is a peaceful and shady oasis overlooking the sea and the ideal place to rest from the heat and activity of St. John’s. To the north is Long Street and here you will find the Court House which contains the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. The museum exhibits archaeological remains of the Siboney people who lived on the islands around 4,000 years ago and were the antecedents of the Arawak and Carib Indians. A stroll along Church Street brings you to the Cathedral which was originally built in wood in 1681, then in brick in 1720 and finally in grey stone in 1843. The interior is American pine to resist earthquakes and hurricanes. (The Cathedral is currently closed and it is not possible to go inside due to the huge restoration project). If you like to savour the local culture, don’t miss the market. The best time to visit is Friday and Saturday morning when it is at its most vibrant and well stocked with fruit and local produce. Next to the fruit market is the Arts and Crafts market also worth a visit. The market is, of course, at the end of Market Street to the far south of the city.

Malgré les grands changements environnementaux des dernières décennies, Antigua garde une nature encore sauvage qui reste à explorer. Le North Sound et la lagune de Barbuda notamment restent encore intacts. Le North Sound s’étend de l’île de Prickly Pear, un peu au large de Hodges Bay, jusqu’à Guiana Island qui délimite l’Océan Atlantique sur le côté est de l’île. Cette zone est formée d’une vingtaine d’îlots, d’une grande barrière de corail à l’intérieur du détroit, d’une vaste zone de palétuviers et d’une infinité de baies et de criques. Long Island, le seul de ces îlots qui soit habité, possède un écosystème qui est resté quasiment intouché. Dans la partie sud les palétuviers poussent nombreux sur l’eau. Ils sont à la base de l’écosystème car ils offrent de la nourriture à de nombreuses espèces de poissons dont les barracudas, les poissons d’appât et les langoustes. DISCOVER UNTOUCHED ANTIGUA. Keeping in mind that the country of Antigua and Barbuda is made up of two larger islands and an unusually large collection of smaller ones, you’ll understand why its diverse environments come together into something so beautifully unique. The two bigger islands sit on the same continental shelf connected by 26 miles of shallow waters. Having both limestone and volcanic rocks is unusual and helps give Antigua unique habitats. Barbuda is totally made up of low lying limestone rocks. Caves, beaches and mangrove habitats provide a wealth of ecology that has yet to be properly documented. Antigua has more bays and coves than any other in the Caribbean. The south, volcanic side of the island is hillier and there is usually more rain. This has lead to very different territorial eco systems with one area being described

as the rainforest. Visitors can take taxi, jeep tours and even a zip line through it to get a better look at some of the lush and tropical vegetation there. There are few places that have nearly as many off shore islands as Antigua does. This is mostly apparent in the North Sound which is a large area enveloped in the calm waters provided by barrier reefs and 22 islands. Long Island which is also known as Jumby Bay is where one of the Atlantic’s best scientific sea turtle studies goes on. The endangered hawksbills come to nest each year and a great many fascinating discoveries have been made there. One of the most important islands ecologically is Great Bird Island which didn’t get its name by accident. A large and diverse variety of migratory and indigenous birds spend time there nesting and roosting at different times of the year. Apart from the obvious on Bird Island, there are also many other life forms that make the island a mustsee destination. One that you may see is the Antigua Racer. It’s a totally harmless, non-venomous, grass snake which is one of the rarest animals on the planet. Why? The racer somehow was only found on Great Bird Island and when the first proper scientific study was done back in 1995 only 60 of these animals were accounted for. To the south is Guiana with its vast expanse of mangrove habitat. There are several types of mangroves with the “red” variety sending its long roots into the sea being most important for juvenile fish, crabs, lobster and other aquatic life. While taking an Eco Tour (with Adventure Antigua) you will see all of these islands and their interesting habitats. I could write pages and pages about the food chains and ecological habitats that you will find around Antigua and Barbuda but to keep it simple I will just say that there is a so much more to the country than meets the eye and if you take the time to have a closer look off the beaten path you will enjoy your experience here so much more.

Au nord, Pasture Bay est le refuge de la tortue de mer Hawksbill, une espèce qui risque l’extinction et qui vient pondre ses œufs sur cette plage. La grande quantité de tortues a fait l’objet, durant de longues années, de recherches des spécialistes de l’université de Géorgie. Ensuite nous trouvons Bird Island, un grand îlot du North Sound. Bien qu’il soit le plus fréquenté il reste néanmoins très tranquille. Ici vit l’inoffensif antiguan racer, l’un des deux serpents les plus rares au monde, qui quitte son refuge à la recherche de nourriture seulement en fin d’après-midi quand la température rafraîchit, mais qu’il est presque impossible d’apercevoir. Nous arrivons ensuite à Hell’s Gate, appelé ainsi à cause de son pont naturel. Des passages naturels au centre de l’île conduisent au sommet du pont, et deux passages immergés conduisent de l’autre côté de l’île. Le snorkeling dans cette zone est une expérience extraordinaire qui permet d’apercevoir des espèces particulières comme le poisson-perroquet, ainsi qu’une grande variété de coraux. La dernière île du North Sound, Guiana Island, est la plus grande des îles qui entourent Antigua, avec un écosystème inhabituel. Les rivages au nord, à l’ouest et au sud, sont l’habitat d’oiseaux migrateurs comme les hérons, les bécassines, les hirondelles de mer et les vanneaux. There are many fine apartments, homes and villas for rent. The range is from a basic condo at US$120 per night to a lush, fully-staffed villa at several thousand US$ per night. Villa rentals can be a great alternative to staying in hotels. Renting a self-contained villa is a different and special way to experience island living. Most of these rental villas have swimming pools and close proximity to one of Antigua’s great beaches. Villa rental also provides a great opportunity for second home owners to get an income from their second home while they are not using it.

There is a wide choice of locations and developments in Antigua and also a wide price range. Completed homes start with small condos at around US$200,000 at one end of the scale and large villas on large parcels with extensive gardens at US$20 million and more at the other end of the scale. The oldest development in Antigua is Mill Reef Club on the eastern, Atlantic coast. It was established in the late forties as an exclusive vacation resort for a group of wealthy American families. Other east coast developments include NonSuch Bay a high-end, managed community. On the western, Caribbean side Jolly Harbour is the main development with nearby Sugar Ridge and other smaller developments that benefit from the facilities offered by Jolly Harbour. Sugar Ridge features a boutique hotel, spa, restaurant and shops. The western side of Antigua enjoys spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea with Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis visible on clear days. Tamarind Hills is the newest development on this coast enjoying access to two beautiful beaches: Darkwood and Ffryes. In the North, the residential areas of Hodges Bay, Crosbies, Paradise View, Cedar Valley and Friar’s Hill are close to the capital, the airport, Cedar Valley Golf Course, Woods Centre and other amenities. The north is especially popular with permanent residents and returning Antiguans. The English and Falmouth Harbour area is a vibrant community featuring historic Nelson’s Dockyard, Shirley Heights, several marinas, the Antigua Yacht Club and Spring Hill Riding Stables. Yachting has made this area famous and in the winter months a multitude of the world’s largest and most exclusive sailing and motor yachts visit its marinas. English and Falmouth Harbours offer a great selection of bars, restaurants and coffee shops.

RENSEIGNEMENTS POUR L’ACHAT OU LA VENTE D’UNE PROPRIÉTÉ:

• Pour les étrangers un permis est nécessaire (Non-Citizen Land Holding License). Son coût correspond à 5% de la valeur de la propriété. • Une fois le terrain acheté et le permis obtenu, les travaux de construction devront commencer dans un délai de 2 ans. • Au coût du permis s’ajoute une taxe gouvernementale de 2,5% pour l’acheteur et de 7,5% pour le vendeur. • Les taxes sur la propriété sont calculées en fonction du montant du loyer et sont en général faibles. • Les frais légaux varient de 1 à 2% en fonction de la valeur de la transaction. • La propriété est inscrite dans le regivstre “Land Registry”. • Les commissions d’agence varient de 5% à 7%. • Pour les frais de gestion des propriétés on applique normalement un taux de 10%. • En ce qui concerne les commissions sur les loyers, on applique normalement un taux de 8.33% sur les loyers à long terme et de 20% sur ceux à court terme. • Les taxes concernant les non résidents qui louent leur maison correspondent à 25% du bénéfice net. • Les frais d’assurance s’élèvent à environ 2% de la valeur déclarée hors terrain. • Il est possible de demander un prêt à une banque mais les intérêts sont élevés par rapport aux taux internationaux. • La majorité des habitations doivent avoir leur propre fosse septique et il est obligatoire de faire construire une citerne de récupération d’eau de pluie. • La majorité des habitations sont équipées d’électricité, d’eau, de câble TV, de téléphone et de débit ADSL. • L’Antigua Barbuda Investment Authority offre des avantages fiscaux pour les gros investissements.

INFORMATION ON BUYING, SELLING AND RENTING PROPERTY:

• For non-citizens a licence is required to purchase property. After enjoying the pleasures of the daylight hours, it’s time to check out the after dark scene. The night time entertainment in Antigua is full of choices: from beach bars to fine dining, floorshows and casinos to cinemas, karaoke and nightclubs. In the south of the island, a drive on Sundays up to Shirley Heights Lookout (T. 728 0636), the 18th Century English guard post with its breathtaking views of English Harbour and the ocean, is traditionally a must on everyone’s calendar. N’oubliez pas qu’on conduit à gauche et que la plupart des voitures ont le volant à droite. Les routes sont pour la plupart étroites, tortueuses, presque sans signalisations et avec de rares accotements latéraux.

NATURISME ET RAPPORTS AVEC LES HABITANTS / NATURISM ON ANTIGUA

Le bronzage intégral n’est pas apprécié à Antigua. Le topless est également défendu, mais il existe une plage pour nudistes dans la zone de Hawksbill. Il est également mal vu de se promener dans l’île en maillot de bain. La population est très religieuse (la religion la plus répandue est le christianisme, anglican et catholique), et elle a gardé un sens de la pudeur très marqué qu’il vaut mieux, par respect, ne pas troubler. Nous vous rappelons aussi qu’il faut respecter ceux qui ne veulent pas être photographiés ou filmés : il est toujours mieux de demander d’abord leur permission. La population locale est de toute façon très gentille, accueillante et réservée.

area. Antiguans have a strong sense of modesty that should be respected. Walking around in only a swimsuit is not appreciated.
