The word Siyakholwa means ‘We Believe’

Siyakholwa! we believe!

The Siyakholwa Group has endeavored to restore belief and hope to poor communities where there has been little or no hope. Poverty is a reality, but hope can inspire change. What started off as Siyakholwa community projects in the Eastern Cape in 1998, has gained momentum, and with the aid of government and private investment, communities and lives are being transformed. The future is bright for South Africa and developing communities around the globe. We hope to model the truth that change is possible. The Siyakholwa Group is a structure that has been established to bring together the group of companies that have evolved out of Siyakholwa Development Foundation over the last 17 years. The Siyakholwa Group is made up of three main companies focusing on different segments to alleviate poverty. The Siyakholwa Development Foundation is focused on community projects, Networx Training Foundation helps

challenged communities through training solutions and capacity building in the area of leadership, entrepreneurial development, life skills, technical and early childhood development interventions. Siyakholwa Business, primarily existing presently as Qobo Qobo, Essential Oils project, brings the hope of entrepreneurship and profitable business models. Each company is overseen by the executive team responsible for oversight, leadership and management. Our focus is helping communities and people become independent and realize the skills they possess and the potential of available resources. Our projects help make this a reality. Join us as we work to break the cycle of poverty, helping people reach their potential and ultimately transform the economy and quality of life in their communities.

The Story of

Brian and Jeri du Plessis, the founders of Siyakholwa, is one of miracles and perseverance... In 1997 Brian du Plessis retired from Barlow Rand, and together with wife Jeri, they sold their home and almost everything they owned in Krugersdorp, South Africa. With their old caravan in tow, they set out in search of a destitute community to serve. After scouting several areas, they landed in Keiskammahoek and have been there ever since. With their caravan parked in an old, deserted milk shed, Brian and Jeri encountered numerous trials, errors, and were often left wondering if this idea of serving communities in need was in fact God’s plan for their lives. Learning from numerous experiments like growing cabbages with no market to sell them, they slowly began implementing projects to uplift the poorest living in their new community. With this focus on uplifting people, they fixed and planted. From teaching people basic agriculture, to how to

4

fix old toilets, their work did not go unnoticed. Soon Siyakholwa saw government and corporate interest in joining them to help people to rise from poverty. The projects have been amazing and with each faithful task completed, more has been entrusted to the growing organization of Siyakholwa. Over 7,200 workers in multiple locations have been trained with skills for gainful employment and entrepreneurship. Brian and Jeri remain involved on the executive committee; however, with a younger team emerging, they now are enjoying life as grandparents as well. They will tell you that God has been faithful and that this story is not about them. They were simply the hands He could use to get Siyakholwa off the ground, and are delighted to see the increasing impact on many lives and communities.

Leadership The experience of the Siyakholwa leadership team spans many years and the team has developed a reputation for executing projects effectively and getting the job done.

6

Currently, the Siyakholwa Group, across all their companies and projects employ over 30 people at 5 offices spanning the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, as well as Gauteng.

Each entity (Siyakholwa Development Foundation, Networx Training Foundation and Qobo Qobo), although registered non-profits with their own Directors are bound together firstly through relationship, and secondly through a Memorandum of Understanding that is also written into each constitution.

Our administrative hub serving the companies both administratively and financially is based in East London. Our satellite offices where we implement our projects are situated in Keiskammahoek, Umtata, Port Elizabeth, Delft (Cape Town) and Muldersdrift (Gauteng). Over 7500 people have been reached through the 7 projects.

Leadership, from our perspective, is about influence and servanthood and we prefer a team approach where everyone is aligned and working within their passions.

On a day to day basis the team is managed by the executive team comprised of Odwa Njoba, Greg & Dale Eland, Dumisani Peter and Tafara Shuro.

Siyakholwa! we believe!

The Siyakholwa Development Foundation is geared to building sustainable enterprises and projects. We promote a pardigm where instead of people and communities relying on donors or sponsors for sustenance, they work on jobs where revenue is created and they ultimately develop their own income, becoming selfreliant. In the Eastern Cape alone around 7100 people have taken part in the Siyakholwa Development Foundation (SDF), which is in essence a community work programme comprised of various projects. The aim is to break the cycle of poverty. The impact of this project sees dignity and a sense of purpose restored to those participating in the SDF programme. People are given a work experience, not only changing their economic outlook but changing the family life at home as breadwinners are better able to provide for those they love.

Awards & Accolades SDF was chosen as the site to launch PHASE 3 of the EXPANDED PUBLIC WORKS PROGRAMME (Oct 2014). Over 3000 people attended the event, including the President of South Africa, Ministers of Parliament, and a number of government leaders. SDF was acknowledged by the President as a model site in the country. THE KAMOSO AWARDS for BEST COMMUNITY WORK PROGRAMME project in the country, was won by Siyakholwa Development Foundation in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Beneficiary of funds raised from ALGOA CARES GOLF CHARITY GOLD DAY 2015. There were more than 45 worthy applicants. More recently, finalists at the INSPIRATION AWARDS 2018 hosted by Mercedes Benz.

Smart Start is a program

taking children from the poorest parts of South Africa, our most precious resource, and encouraging early learning and brain development. You can imagine that when people are living from hand to mouth, they are not always aware that by implementing simple exercises and routines, their children will reach important developmental milestones. Smart Start hopes to see all children living in South Africa benefit from early learning skills with exercises and activities to ensure their cognitive skills are ready to succeed in school and in life. Over the last two years Siyakholwa have established over 408 social franchisees to date in Keiskammahoek, Stuterheim and East London reaching and feeding over 3400 children a day. The plan is to see 3500 franchises reaching 52000 children, with trained individuals, sharing their knowledge with mothers

The Community Work Programme (CWP)

is a South African government programme that provides an employment safety net. It supplements livelihood strategies by providing a basic level of income security through work. The programme was started to address high unemployment and contributes to strategic goals of government in addressing poverty and unemployment. It is based on the recognition that policies to address unemployment and create decent work will take time to reach people living in marginalised areas with few opportunities. The CWP does not replace government’s social grants programme but supplements it. The programme is targeted at unemployed and underemployed women and men of working age. It aims to give those willing and able to work the opportunity to do so, and

Siyakholwa! we believe!

afford them the dignity and social inclusion that comes from this. What makes the CWP different is that it is also a community programme. Work must be ‘useful work’. It must improve the area and the quality of life for the people living there. This includes fixing community assets like schools, road and parks, and setting up food gardens. People in the area help to decide on the kind of work needed, and what is most urgent. This could be looking after orphans and vulnerable children, helping sick people, assisting teachers at schools, looking after children while their parents are at work,

and working with the local police to improve safety and reduce crime. Currently Siyakholwa are an implementing agent in the Eastern cape managing over 7200 Participants. Siyakholwa have excelled in this programme and were the winners of the EPWP Non-State Sector Komaso Awards for the best CWP project in 2014 &2015. Siyakholwa was also chosen as the site for the Expanded Public Works Programme’s phase 3 launch on the 3 October 2014 and acknowledged as model Site by the President of South Africa.

9

The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) aims to provide poverty and income relief through temporary work for the unemployed to carry out socially useful activities. This programme aims to bring the unemployed into a temporary working environment • • •

help them obtain skills and gain work experience ensure they receive a stipend (allowance) enhance their chances of future employment and/or trigger their “entrepreneurial spirit”.

Siyakholwa has been running this project successfully in Cape Town (Delft), Gauteng (Muldersdrift), as well as East London. We currently have registered on the programme 300 Participants.

Siyakholwa Bee, Peach & Maize Milling Project The Siyakholwa Bee, Peach & Maize Milling Project is an exciting endeavor. Around 1500 peach and citrus trees have been planted, nurtured and harvested. Women have been trained in producing and bottling delicious jam! In conjunction, the Bee Keeping Project has launched with 30 hives, and a goal of expanding to 100 hives in the next 2 years. This project aims to encourage people to start honey businesses in the future. The Siyakholwa local honey is the best in town! The Maize Milling Project provides a service to the local communicty to mill and bag their maize.

NETWORX is the Siyakholwa

Education and Training programme and is passionate about helping people, organizations and communities reach their full potential through training, multiple skills development, mentoring, and leadership development. The head office is based in East London, and satellite offices in Gauteng and Cape Town. South Africa is a country grappling with rampant AIDS, poverty and unemployment, and a disenfranchised and uneducated poor population. South Africa’s problems are beyond what government programs or policies can solve alone; change must also occur from the grassroots level, through private enterprise, entrepreneurship and spiritual transformation. Networx Training Foundation recognize that although progress has been made in the fight against poverty, rural development remains a challenge in South Africa and

at the centre of this mountain is education and training for rural people. As the vast majority of our population are either school leavers or those who could not gain access to tertiary institutions, Networx identified the need to provide affordable education, training and skills courses that meet with the relevant standards & qualifications as required by the South African Qualification Authority. With this in mind Networx a separate training arm was established in March 2013 and Networx Training Foundation was accredited and registered as a training provider with the Education Training and Development Sector (ETDP) SETA. This training offers communities a variety of both accredited and nonaccredited training interventions that are both academically sound and practically relevant. The core competencies focus on leadership/ management and entrepreneurial development, technical skills, life skills, farming and early childhood development.

11

Networx has trained thousands of learners through the various programmes that they offer but realize that training alone that does not include a framework that includes mentorship and work opportunities will be ineffective. Therefore, all training happens within a social economic development model that leads towards either job readiness and work placement, entrepreneurial businesses or supplement income.

Planting seeds to change lives starts with our children.

12

Networx, is a subsidiary of the Siyakholwa Group (Pty) Ltd umbrella and is registered as a Section 21 company (REG: 2013/0307966/08) and has full accreditation with the ETDP SETA. Our accreditation number is 10664 and registration number is 2257. Networx also partners with the Master Artisan Academy that is a SETA-accredited training provider (MERSETA No: 17-QA/ACC/0536/1.

Projects

The Siyakholwa Group believe that some of the current development models and dependency on government funding and grants is not a sustainable model and some cases counterproductive. The primary purpose of Siyakholwa Business will be to set up a cluster of sustainable social enterprises and services for profit which enable marginalized communities in South Africa and beyond to grasp opportunities and overcome poverty and joblessness. Currently the Qobo Qobo Essential Oils is the sole entity under Siyakholwa Business. However, other proposed future businesses include: Bee Keeping, Peaches/Jam Making, Maize Milling, Metal Work, and Management Services.

18

Siyakholwa! we believe!

Qobo Qobo Essential Oils The vision of Qobo Qobo is to become a financially profitable grower and supplier of Essential Oils that provides a consistently top-quality oil meeting and ensuring customer satisfaction through continuous improvement. Qobo Oobo will also create awareness and promote and sell natural products and essential oils to the wider public. The Essential oils programme was established in 2006 on a small scale and the potential here is endless. In partnership with South African Breweries Foundation, Qobo Qobo Essential Oils is a non-profit organization which establishes eight independent farmer units from Keiskamahoek in the Eastern Cape to grow rose geranium for profit. The sites belong to local emerging farmers who provide the bulk of the distillation’s plant material and who take full control in the crop production on their lands and provide rose geranium bio mass to the central processing plant at Siyakholwa Development Foundation. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) initially researched the project after which the foundation was given startup funding by the Eastern Cape

Development Corporation. Root stock was purchased from the CSIR. The Development Bank of South then funded two propagation nurseries so that the planted area could be extended. Thousands of rooted cuttings have been distributed each year since 2006 to increase the resource while the foundation has a R600,000 distillation plant which consists of 2 by 1 ton pots. The distillation plant can process up to 40 hectares of rose geranium per annum. The oil, produced by the foundation and tested by Dohne Agricultural Research Institute and the CSIR, is of some of the finest quality in the world. The overseas market has been explored by the foundation with indications that it will generate excellent income. Beneficiation of the oils is a future option. It is also envisioned that phase two of this project will be to develop well-established farmer units to progress and introduce value-added components where they may be able to make products that use the oil as an ingredient or package the oil into smaller containers.

19

The Vetiver Conservation Initiative The Vetiver Conservation Initiative was initiated in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Bountiful Grains. The “Vetiver grass project” have been implemented for conservation practice and the building of “Stone Check Dams” for donga reclamation. This labourintensive practice produces a significant benefit to communal lands through conservation of soil, water and nutrients. Siyakholwa Business has a nursery of the order of 10,000 plants that are being sold for stocking new areas.
