The First Thanksgiving The first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated in 1621 by the Pilgrims (the first people to travel to America) and the Indians. It was a celebration they had after the crops grew and there was a lot of food. It started when the Pilgrims first came to Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. The first winter there was really bad and many people died. That is when the Indians decided to help the Pilgrims. The Indians taught the Pilgrims how to plant and grow corn, pumpkins, beans, peas and other crops. They also taught them how to catch fish. This helped the Pilgrims so much that they decided to have a celebration to thank God and the Indians for all their help. This was the first Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Now Today, Thanksgiving Day is a day when most Americans don’t go to work or school. They usually celebrate by having a big dinner with their family. At dinner many people eat turkey with cranberry sauce and have pumpkin pie for dessert. It is still a day when people remember to thank God for everything they have and some families take turns praying or sharing what they are thankful for.
