KOTTURPURAM HOUSE , CHENNAI The story of this house in Chennai revolves around three essential elements - a plinth, a well and a tree. Freshwater exists within just a few meters below the ground surface on this flat site next to the Indian ocean. Hence the first gesture on this land was to build a well to collect water and to establish a datum or plinth to secure one from the flood. The well was made using a method of dry stack stone masonry working on the phenomena of weight and mass with gravity driving the structure into the ground to reach water. The foundation and plinth were built using granite and lime available from the region. The house is conceived as a series of concentric rings whose varying rooms and functions are arranged along the periphery of the plinth enclosing a courtyard that contains a cluster of frangipani trees, a white rainbow shower tree and the well. Around the house is a lush tropical garden, contained by the boundary walls and peripheral structures of staff housing, garage and other facilities. Local brick, granite and lime mortar are the main materials used in the construction of the house. This combination of materials and landscape, along with the layout of the house encourages cross ventilation, and allows for the site to have its own cool micro-climate in the otherwise extremely hot and humid city. The house and landscape continue to flourish owing to the presence of a water network system embedded in the land.

ITHAMPADU FARM HOUSE , NELLORE A farmhouse in a village called Ithampadu, Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. Currently, the work has been initiated for the staff quarters for the workers on the farm. The staff quarters is an answer to the dry hot climate of the place and a co-existing life between humans and cattle of the farm. It is inspired from the houses of the village and the lifestyle of village. The staff quarters is arranged around a big neem tree which gives shade during most of the day. Two bedrooms side by side with a verandah on one side of the tree, a living-dining cum kitchen space along with a bathroom and a cattle shed on the other two sides. The building will be made of bricks and stone. It will be finished with a mud plaster. The roof will be on non-Asbestos sheet and country tiles.

MANIFATTURA TABACCHI FIRENZE Manufattura Tabacchi is one of the oldest tobacco factories in entire Europe. It was designed and built by Giovanni Bartoli and Pier Luigi Nervi . The factory stopped its tobacco manufaturing in 2001. But the whole complex which housed the factory still exists. The clients wanted the complex to be turned into an urban ecosystem consisting offices, residential complexes, commercial and social activities. SANAA and Studio Mumbai are collaborating to do this urban level project. Master plan is done by SANAA and Studio Mumbai aims to work on the social and community spaces and landscape of the project. Initial ideas and concepts have been presented to the clients. The studio at Chennai dealt with one part of the complex- Building 11. Building 11 of Manifattura Tabacchi is a one storied building which will be turned into a restaurant and social space.
