OUT-OF-AREA LOOK

Logjam at top of leagues The team has 15 returning starters from last year’s playoff squad, and 18 seniors, including QB Jordan Mulloy and several standouts on defense. » Manitowoc should again be a challenger for a league title and playoff berth. » Pulaski will be led by new coach Gary Westerman, who was the defensive coordinator at state powerhouse Kimberly in 2007 and 2008. Westerman also says he will install Kimberly’s offensive gameplan, which has averaged 33.7 ppg in the last seven seasons. But just one starter returns on offense.

Sheboygan Press staff

With the absense of an undisputed powerhouse expected in the three conferences area teams play in, races for league championships are expected to go down to the final week. In the Fox River Classic Conference, as many as four teams have been called championship “favorites” by coaches. In the Eastern Wisconsin Conference, two-time defending champion Plymouth lost a lot to graduation, while Two Rivers and Kiel both look like programs on the way up. And in the Central Lakeshore Conference, two-time defending champ Oostburg is reloading, but Cedar Grove-Belgium and Ozaukee are both poised to take over the top spot.

FRCC

» Ashwaubenon surprised many by going unbeaten in the Fox River Classic Conference last year. Again the Jaguars’ talent has graduated, but nobody will count them out this time. Defense was the key for the team last year, as it allowed just 9.9 points per game. But just three players return on that side of the ball. » Perennial powerhouse Bay Port has just one starter returning on offense, 201-pound running back Mike Ahlborg. But the Pirates have won at least six FRCC games every season, and nobody expects this one to be much different. » De Pere had a down year in 2010, but with an extra year of experience is expected to be more competitive. » Notre Dame has never missed the playoffs since joining the WIAA in 2000. Last year was a near-miss thanks to injuries; nearly 20 players were injured in its season finale against Ashwaubenon. Notre Dame’s already in trouble, as senior linebacker/running back John Ihlenfeldt tore his ACL and MCL in the off-season. The team hopes he can return by the end of the season. Alex Miller (697 yards, 6.2 average, 10 TD) was a first-team All-

FRCC running back and kick returner last year and is back for his senior year. » Green Bay East should be much improved, led by a senior class numbering 22 strong. East lost four games by 10 points or less, so the added experience should be a big boost. » Gone from Green Bay Preble is 25-year head coach Pat Prochnow, who retired after last season. In is longtime assistant Paul Donart, who has installed an entirely new offense and defense. However, 5-foot-10, 215-pound running back Brad Boockmeier returns and is expected to carry the workload after playing last year at 190 pounds. Donart says Boockmeier is arguably the strongest and fastest player on the roster. » Green Bay West, a team with just five wins in seven seasons — including zero in 2010 — has a new coach in Jeff Behrendt, who replaced former NFL standout Harry Sydney. » Green Bay Southwest will enter the season full of talent and potential, and are considered the odds-on favorite to win the FRCC title. Fifth-year coach Bryce Paup hopes to lead the squad to its first league crown since 1975.

» Campbellsport won just two games in 2010, though led strong squads from New Holstein and Kewaskum before falling. The Cougars will attempt a two-platoon system, and the triple-option offense will again be led by senior QB Tim Whitty. » Kewaskum returns a lot of talent from last year’s EWC runner-up squad, especially on offense. » Two Rivers returns a wealth of experience and should continue its recent program ascension led by coach Brent Luebke. » Waupun will attempt to rebound from a winless season. With juniors and sophomores getting the bulk of the playing time last year, the expectations have been raised. The Warriors return a whopping 16 starters. Press top-half predictions FRCC 1. G.B. Fresh approach

Players to watch

By Pete Barth

Sheboygan Press staff

Stability and continuity are critical to success in the game of football. With each case of coaching turnover comes a new overall approach, different schemes and new terminology to learn. Sheboygan North is now on its fifth head coach in the past 14 years, with only one winning season in that span (way back in 1999). Enter Karl Nienhuis, who hopes to bring stability — and of course, winning — to a program that hasn’t had much of either for a while. Nienhuis, who was an assistant at North the past three seasons, including the last two as offensive coordinator, is running the program his way, with a revamped staff and his ideas. When he was hired in December, Nienhuis was asked if North could be a consistent winner in football. His answer: “Absolutely, yes.” Eight months later, he hasn’t changed his mind. “We’ve had some really good practices and I’m pretty happy with how things are going,” said Nienhuis. “The players are practicing hard and doing everything we ask. I think things are going really well so far.” North had a spirited quarterback competition that wasn’t settled until Wednesday, when Aaron Peterson edged out Taylor Lutzke for the starting job. Peterson is more of a thrower, while Lutzke is more of a movethe-pocket player. Peterson will have the luxury of handing off to battering ram feature back Reed Konter, who is up to 230 pounds (from 205 last

year) and, Nienhuis said, got faster. He’ll probably operate out of the fullback position. “I think any coach in the state would love to build his offense around Reed,” Nienhuis said. “In the offseason, he hit the weight room hard and conditioned hard.” Offensive line could be a strength, with three returning starters, including talented Adam Stoeckigt. Junior Tyler VanCalligan, the brother of three-year starting quarterback Derek, was in the quarterback race too, but Nienhuis likes the idea of using him as a “slash” type player at various offensive positions to get his quickness and play-making ability on the edge. He’ll play some running back, some wingback and some split end. Defensively, North struggled much of last year, particularly down the stretch.

In their last three games, all losses, the Golden Raiders allowed 34 or more points — while scoring an average of 28. Nienhuis has a new defensive coordinator, Corey Roberson, a former standout at Lakeland College and a longtime indoor league professional player. Roberson has installed a 4-4 with zone principles (North ran a 3-5 with lots of man-toman last season). “I’ve noticed improved pursuit,” Nienhuis said. “I’m seeing 11 guys flying to the football within the scheme of things.” Some of the top players on that side of the ball through camp were Stoeckigt up front and linebackers Trevor Peters and Mark Kiser. Defensive back Naji Allan is one of the fastest high school athletes in Wisconsin (he qualified for the state track meet in the Division 1 100-meter dash last

spring). He’ll start at corner and get a handful of plays on offense at receiver to stretch the field. North has won three games in each of the past two seasons, which is better than the one win combined in 2007 and 2008. The Golden Raiders haven’t won more than four games in any season this decade. “Looking at the schedule, there’s no magic number of wins I’m looking at,” Nienhuis said. “Our focus right now is, did we get better ever single day? We ask the kids, ‘Did you get better today?’ That’s really our focus right now as a team. “I’m most happy with how the team has come together. The players are really getting along, working hard, working for each other. I see a team coming together, and that makes me most proud.” Reach Pete Barth at pbarth@sheboyganpress.com

Building on momentum By Pete Barth

Sheboygan Press staff

There’s no way to tangibly measure the sociological value of a playoff appearance to a high school football program in Wisconsin. But in a time of dwindling participation numbers at many schools, there’s no doubt that making the postseason gives any program a jolt of positive energy. Last year, Sheboygan South went 5-5 overall and made the playoffs for the first time since 2004. “It definitely gave the program a shot in the arm,” said Chris Hein, who enters his seventh season as head coach. “I told the team at our banquet that those players rejuvenated our program. Last season was huge. I told the seniors, they played a huge role in throwing the brakes on a couple of tough years and getting our program back.” Now the challenge for South, which prior to last year had five consecutive losing seasons in conference play, is to keep the good times rolling. “We want to make being a playoff team the expectation around here every year,” Hein said. “That’s a high standard, because this is a very good conference, but our numbers are improving and the kids are excited.” There are 32 seniors and juniors on this year’s roster, up from last year, and there’s a monstrous freshman class of 50 out for football, the largest Hein can recall in his 10 years with the program. The long-range future looks bright indeed, but Hein’s focus is on the present. And though the Red-

wings graduated plenty of firepower from last year’s team, Hein said South should be physical and fast on offense. The key will be getting a young defense up to speed. Four starters return on each side of the ball, led by two-way lineman Eric Morgan, a 5-10, 293-pound three-year starter. Once a center, he is now a left tackle and will be key to the Redwings’ running game. Morgan is joined up front by returning starters Alex Austin and Derek McLaughlin on a unit that should be South’s strength. The new starting quarterback is Jake Pribbernow, a 6-3 senior who played key minutes when standout Ethan Berlin was injured last year. Not the running threat Berlin was, the lean Pribbernow has good pocket presence and leadership

skills, and Hein’s confidence. Athletic Ashon Anderson gives South a dangerous option at QB in the “Wildcat” look. Halfbacks Ben Steen and Branden Capetillo (one of the best wrestlers in the state who returns after taking a year off from football) and fullbacks Taylor Ditter and talented sophomore prospect Andrew Wildmann give Hein the option of mixing I-formation plays in with the base spread formation plays. All-State wide receiver Riley Tutas is gone, but Thomas Murray is solid and former receiver Jake Knuth (now a tight end) will give the Redwings another solid pass-catching option on seam routes. Matched up against linebackers, Knuth should enjoy favorable matchups. Defensively, the team

must replace all three starting linebackers in the 4-3 and six of the front seven players from last year. Of the seven starting defensive linemen and linebackers this season, six will be juniors. Murray, a senior, is an outstanding safety and corners Anderson and Jake Planton return, along with standout defensive end Blake Herbert. The secondary should be a strength. Planton returns at kicker. Hein said South looked good offensively in its scrimmage against Homestead, Kettle Moraine and Janesville Parker, and broke off a few nice runs on iso plays out of the “I.” “Just looking back at the scrimmage, we have a chance to be more physical than we’ve been in the past,” Hein said. “And we have good speed. Our team speed is very good. We just lack experience at some positions.” Overall, Hein likes where his program is and where it’s headed. He said the team’s next big challenge is to start consistently beating the Fox River Classic Conference’s “Big Four” — De Pere, Bay Port, Ashwaubenon and Pulaski. Against the old Fox River Valley Conference teams, Hein said, his Redwings have a winning record over the years. “We’ve got to bring our level of play up to beat those four schools,” Hein said. Last year’s playoff berth was certainly a step in the right direction. Reach Pete Barth at pbarth@sheboyganpress.com

Chris Zablocki is much too positive and big-picture oriented to describe last season as a “down year,” though the Rockets’ 6-4 final record in 2010 paled in comparison to the monstrous 13-1 and 11-1 campaigns Cedar Grove put up the two previous years. “We were very young and we were injured last season, which was a combination we hadn’t dealt with before,” said Zablocki, Cedar Grove’s sixth-year head coach. “But these kids battled through that and made it to the playoffs.” In its first-round playoff game, Cedar Grove was thumped by Brillion, 30-0. In fairness to last year’s Rockets though, they entered the season having to replace nine starters on each side of the ball, and many of the replacements were juniors — albeit highly regarded juniors. “For some of those young men, our season-opening loss last year was their first regular-season loss ever.” Yes, that junior class went unbeaten its freshman and sophomore seasons. “It’s easy sometimes to take things for granted,” Zablocki said. “I think they learned you can’t do that. When we stuck together, we were not a bad football team. The big thing they learned is that they needed to work hard all the time.” Now that group is back, with nine returning starters on offense and 10 on defense. Zablocki is thrilled with the offseason leadership and work ethic this bunch has shown. Apparently, last season’s little bump in the road provided quite the motivational fuel.

Cedar Grove-Belgium has qualified for the playoffs eight straight seasons. PHOTO BY GARY C. KLEIN/THE SHEBOYGAN PRESS “We had the best numbers in the weight room we’ve ever had, and we had the best testing numbers we’ve had,” Zablocki said. “This team has really come together as a Rocket family. They decided to take personal responsibility and initiative to do what it takes to be a great high school football team.” Zablocki said his players organized car pools to get each other to workout sessions, and even won a summer passing league tournament without a head coach. Zablocki chose not to use

one of his contact days, so that his team could establish leadership from within. It’s unfair to compare this team to the state finalists of 2008 or the Level 3 playoff team of 2009. After all, those two teams went 14-0 in Central Lakeshore Conference play those two years. But certainly, there is great potential in this bunch. The depth is strong enough that Zablocki thinks only five players — Nick Peterson, Hunter Buechler Jon Herzog, Chris Peszko

and Robby Loose — will start both ways. Peterson is a returning all-region standout at receiver and he’s also a great defensive back. Zablocki said he’s getting college looks. All great Cedar Grove teams under Zablocki are built around a powerful running game, and this team should be no exception. Alex Giles (778 yards and 10 TDs last year) and Buechler make a formidable pair, with the former being fast and shifty and the latter bringing a little more thump to the position. Both will play at the same time, bringing to mind visions of some of the past Rockets thunder and lightning duos. Quarterback T.J. Obbink returns, and Zablocki said he and Peterson worked quite a bit this summer on routes and timing. Among the top defensive players are all-conference linebacker Darren Koopman and two-year starting defensive lineman Jake Weyker, who was injured in preseason camp but should return soon. Last season, which, by the way, would have been celebrated by many programs around the state, is a distant memory. This year’s team has plans to recapture the conference title rival Oostburg took last fall. “I don’t know what our record will be, but no matter what it is, I told the kids I am already so proud of them,” Zablocki said. “They chose to face adversity head on, and the kind of young men they’ve become as a result is the most rewarding thing to me.” Reach Pete Barth at pbarth@sheboyganpress.com

Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah senior Blake Loucks is new to the program, having played previously at Two Rivers. When he suited up for the Raiders last year, he was just a wide receiver. Now that he’s a Resorter, he’ll almost never leave the field. Welcome to Elkhart Lake, where “two-platooning” is a foreign concept. “(Loucks) was not used to playing both ways when he got here, but we explained to him, that’s how we do it,” said Resorters head coach Barry Feldmann. “We try to give players breaks from time to time, but everyone plays a lot. I think Blake likes it.” Indeed, there’s a certain honor to playing at a school like Elkhart Lake, which is always low on numbers but long on heart. Last year, there was only one senior on the roster and just 22 players in the entire program. Elkhart struggled to a 1-8 record. This season, with 26 players, including six freshmen (a few of whom will play regularly) and five sophomores, lack of depth will again be a problem. But there are nine seniors and some real quality talent returns. Leading the way will be 510, 190-pound senior Kyle Rentmeester, a physical, talented four-year starter who other Central Lakeshore Conference coaches rave about. Ask Feldmann what makes Rentmeester special, and his answer is short and sweet: “Everything.” “He’s smart and so aware of his surroundings on the

KLEIN/THE SHEBOYGAN PRESS field,” Feldmann continued. “He’s just an exceptional player in every way, offensively and defensively. If there’s a tackle to be made, he’s there.” Offensively, Rentmeester will play quarterback but will also line up at fullback at times. On defense, he’ll run the team from his middle linebacker position. While the Resorters will be relatively short on numbers, they won’t lack physicality. Three-year starting offensive lineman Alex Miller just returned from National Guard basic training in Fort Hood, Texas, and will play on Saturday in Elkhart’s opener. “He’s probably our most physical player,” Feldmann said. Tight end/defensive end

Josh Schneider, 6-3 and 210 pounds, “put on a lot of muscle and will be a force for us,” Feldmann said. And two-way lineman Justin Schneider, a 6-5, 275pounder, returns after missing last season due to a shoulder injury. Feldmann sounds upbeat when talking about his sixth team at Elkhart. “I really think we’re going to be OK this season,” he said. “This year’s senior class needs to step up, because those guys are the heart and soul of our program and will be in the spotlight the whole year. Our goal is to make the playoffs.” Whether the Resorters do that or not, they will take pride in their tenacity and ability to field a competitive team at such a small school.

“The low numbers are frustrating, and it wears on you,” Feldmann said. “But I enjoy it. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t. You bang your head against the wall a lot, but the kids make it worth it. After practice (on Tuesday), I had a talk with the kids. I told them that winning is great, but if they can take one thing away from football that they will use later in life, my goal is accomplished.” As for the future of the program, Feldmann said the middle school program is strong, but there are only 14 total boys among next year’s incoming ninthgraders. “That’s not a lot of boys, but we’ll find a way,” Feldmann said. “We always do.” Reach Pete Barth at pbarth@sheboyganpress.com

From 2003 to 2008, Howards Grove head coach Dave Schmid guided his team to six straight seasons of .500 or better football and six straight playoff appearances, culminating in an 8-3 mark and a playoff win in 2008. But the last two seasons have ended with losing records, including last year’s 3-6 mark — the worst of Schmid’s nine-year career. “It was tough on me, tough on my assistants,” Schmid said of the last couple of seasons. “I think we had a couple of classes that weren’t as dedicated as that 8-3 class and some of our other more successful teams. Last year’s seniors, I don’t think football was their first love. We had a couple of track athletes and I think some others played just because that’s what you do in the fall. Football was not something they all really cherished. “This year is totally different. These kids who are out, football is No. 1 with them. They pushed themselves all summer like they thought football is No. 1. I don’t know if 8-3 will happen, but we’ll be on the positive side (of the win-loss ledger) again. I’m pretty pleased with where we are.” Howards Grove returns great experience, with about eight starters back on each side of the ball. The offensive line must replace just one starter, and athletic quarterback Noah Steines (6-0, 185) is back. “He’s a year older, more mature, and over the summer, he really worked on improving his passing

Howards Grove seeks to get back to the playoffs after a seven-year streak of success was snapped last season PHOTO BY BRUCE HALMO/THE SHEBOYGAN PRESS game,” said Schmid of his two-year starter. “I’m not saying we’re an option team, but he’ll run it better this season and be a better passer.” The offensive line, which Schmidt called “one of the highlights of camp,” should be the team’s strength and senior tight end Ashton Holzman, 6-5, 230, could be one of the most lethal weapons in the conference. A four-year starter, Holzman has played offensive tackle in the past but has too much athletic ability

not to be used in the passing game. “He had a phenomenal (summer) passing league,” Schmid said. “Nobody could cover him. And of course, he’s a really good blocker.” Last year’s Tigers had only eight seniors, four of whom played regularly. This year’s senior class has 11, and “every one of them will play a significant role on our football team,” Schmid said. While last year’s varsity team struggled, the JV

team went 7-1 and won the conference, Schmid said. “This year we will certainly be able to turn it back around,” Schmid said. “I really think we can be in the mix. Certainly our goal is to win a conference championship. I’m not sure if that will happen this year yet, but we’re certainly going to be in games we weren’t in last year. “I’m really excited about the next couple of seasons.” Reach Pete Barth at pbarth@sheboyganpress.com

Scott Ring has done some great teaching and coaching since arriving at Oostburg High School seven years ago, but he’s just as eager to learn. So when Ring played golf earlier this summer with his high school coach, the legendary Tom Wender of Iron Mountain, Mich., the Flying Dutchmen’s coach was all ears. “He reminded me that now everyone is gunning for us; everyone wants the title,” said Ring of Wender, whose career record was 160-55. “He said, ‘You’re the defending champ; now you need to play like it.’” Message received: “I told our kids they can’t just show up and expect to win again,” said Ring. “It takes total commitment. Our players have high hopes for themselves and for each other, and they should, but they have to work, really work. Our group last year was special, obviously. Oostburg football had never won 10 games, and the last time they were undefeated was 1974. So it was a special memory for everyone.” But now it’s time to build new memories. The Flying Dutchmen, coming off a 10-1 season, have gone 23-4 in Central Lakeshore Conference play since 2007. It’s safe to say Ring’s perfectionist approach and run-oriented philosophy have created a budding perennial powerhouse. “I was talking with my wife, and we were discussing the program,” Ring said. “I’d like to continue to build tradition here and grow for many more years.

Oostburg finished unbeaten in the Central Lakeshore Conference in 2010, the first time the Dutchmen had accomplished that feat since 2000. PHOTO BY BRUCE HALMO/THE SHEBOYGAN PRESS I’ve been head coach here for only five years. I want to keep working on things, promoting Oostburg football, enjoying it, having fun and watching the kids have success for the next 20 years. I enjoy where I am very much. My job is teaching, and I love to teach, but I’m also fortunate enough to coach football in the community where I teach.” Ring’s area roots deepened when he and his wife welcomed a baby boy, Keaton, about a month ago. This year’s edition of the Flying Dutchmen will have to replace many good players from last season’s incredible team. Ring said only five players with significant varsity experience return. “It’s definitely a changing of the guard,” Ring said. “But we have a really good core group. We don’t have a lot of numbers, but

the guys we have are really good players.” Unfortunately, one of the players Ring expected big things from, projected running back and defensive back Carter Ziemann, tore his ACL and is out for the season. “We had a rough camp in terms of injuries,” Ring said. “We have a shoulder injury, with a guy out at least a month, we had a concussion, some ankles, Achilles, wrists … just a lot of injuries.” Thirteen seniors will lead the way as Oostburg tries to repeat as CLC champ. Any Scott Ring team will feature a strong running game, and this year’s key ball-carriers will include senior returnee Alex Stecker (708 yards last year) and junior Devin Veldboom, whose brother Dustin graduated after gaining 964 yards last fall.

Brad Prinsen, who has experience at numerous positions, takes over at quarterback. A large offensive line could be a strength, with 6-2, 267-pound Tyler Hoffmann and 6-2, 267pound Brad DenBoer returning. Defensively, Ring is excited about the potential of junior defensive tackle Tony Teunissen, who checks in at 6-0, 312 pounds. The secondary will be solid with Prinsen and Stecker returning. “I’m really excited about this team, especially for the kids,” he said. “There’s a real excitement there, and a level of confidence, especially with the seniors, because they’ve been involved the last few years.” In other words, they know what it’s like to win. Now it’s their turn. Reach Pete Barth at pbarth@sheboyganpress.com

Curiosity no more

Players to watch

By Pete Barth

Sheboygan Press staff

With its new head coach and his unique offensive philosophy, Ozaukee entered last season as a bit of an area curiosity. It didn’t take long, however, for Jim Lippe and the Warriors to become a bona fide force. Lippe and his old-school single wing attack baffled opponents, ignited community enthusiasm in Fredonia and sparked victories by the bushel. “It was a lot of fun,” said Lippe of his team’s resurgence. Ozaukee, which had won 12 games in the previous four seasons combined, broke out with an 8-2 season and a sparkling 6-1 record in Central Lakeshore Conference play. The single wing, which employs three running backs lined up several yards behind the center but no quarterback, is difficult to scheme for because nobody sees it. Making things worse for opposing coaches this fall is that the Warriors are much more comfortable with it than they were going into last season. “We’re light years ahead,” Lippe said. “When we left our scrimmage last year, on the bus back home, I’m thinking, ‘What the heck are we doing?’ It did not go well. I was thinking, ‘I don’t know if we’re going to win a football game.’ ” But the offense clicked quickly, scoring more than 30 points in its first three games, including a 35-28 win over defending CLCchamp Cedar Grove-Belgium in Week 2. In that game, junior running back

Ozaukee returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2003 and looks to build on the turnaround season. PHOTO BY BRUCE HALMO/THE SHEBOYGAN PRESS Devon Linzenmeyer eclipsed the 100-yard mark, something that would become a regular occurrence. Linzenmeyer rushed for an area-best 1,698 yards and 26 touchdowns, averaging more than nine yards per carry. “Devon was good last year, but boy, wait until everyone sees him this year,” said Lippe of his feature back. “He went the extra mile in the weight room. I don’t even know how to describe how great he looks out there on the field. He’s going to have a really special season.” Going into last season, Linzenmeyer was listed at 5-9, 180. This year, he’s 5-9, 195. “He’s fast, but what’s amazing about him is his incredible change of direction,” Lippe said. “He also

sees the field really well, and he’s a great leader.” What’s really scary about Ozaukee is that the Warriors have additional weapons that, on most teams, could be main threats. Junior running back Hunter Hess is the fastest player on the team and receiver Steve Street is 6-6 with a 30-inch vertical leap. “And Ethan Brouillette is a heck of a running back too,” Lippe said. “We have a lot of really good athletes.” Though his offense is ground-based, Lippe wants to throw more, because he realizes the deeper a team gets in the playoffs, being two-dimensional can make the difference between advancing and being eliminated. Linzenmeyer can throw, which, when he’s running a sweep with a run-pass option, has to be an X’s and O’s

nightmare for opponents. Ozaukee returns seven starters, six of whom (Linzenmeyer, Street, Hess and solid lineman Jim D’Angelo, Cody Stageman and Matt Henke) will start both ways. Last year, nine players started both ways, so Lippe is trying to steadily work toward more of a two-platoon look. Back to Linzenmeyer, Lippe said his team captain is getting looks from NCAA Division I schools like Ball State and North Dakota State and numerous D-II schools. “His goal is to take this football team a long way,” Lippe said. As far as the program has already come, that’s saying something. Reach Pete Barth at pbarth@sheboyganpress.com

Seeking rebound

Players to watch

By Pete Barth

Chris Bichler believes strongly in the intangible aspects of football. For Bichler, the longtime head coach at Random Lake, it’s not all about the X’s and O’s, 40 times and bench press max numbers. Just as important are things like chemistry, personal accountability and team camaraderie. That’s why he’s often hesitant to speculate how any team will do based on what’s written on a preseason roster. “I’m really hoping these players go beyond themselves, and I think they’ll have to in order to be competitive,” he said of this year’s Rams. “Not to take anything away from them as players or athletes, because they’re good kids with ability. But this group will have to mesh and really grow together as a team. We’ve got some good kids, but we need players to step up even more. They are working hard right now, and I’m happy with that. But you don’t win by putting on a helmet or a jersey.” Not even at a traditionrich program like Random Lake. Bichler is coming off a 3-6 season, only the fourth losing season in his 13 years as head coach at the school. This year’s team has some talent and size, but unlike during Random’s reign in the mid-90s, depth is suddenly a real concern. There are 35 total names on the Random Lake roster, the smallest number in Bichler’s career, and for the first time ever, every player in the program will suit up on Friday nights.

“We’re going to have to stay injury free,” he said. “That will be key for us because we’ve got such low numbers. I’m pretty comfortable with the first spots, but we do not have a lot of depth. It will be a matter of staying healthy and keeping people fresh. We will always work toward having 22 starters. Whether we can do that, I don’t know.” Bichler has never hesitated to promote deserving sophomores and even freshmen into the varsity mix, but now it’s more of a necessity than an option. The 12-player sophomore class is the biggest in the program and many will play, including state wrestler Reed Anklam, a 6-

2, 265-pounder who will start on the offensive and defensive lines. Other two-way starters will likely include senior standout Justin Lunde at running back and safety; line standout Austin Jentges (who has impressed Bichler in camp); lineman Cody Schuessler; and receiver/defensive back Tim Grimes. Quarterback Brady Schmidt played last year as a sophomore and Bichler said Random may throw a bit more this year than in the past. Jentges leads the offensive line, where there’s good size and potential, and Lunde, a returnee, heads up a solid group of running backs.

Linebacker, regularly a strength at Random, could be again this season, with three returnees. In all, there are about six players on offense and seven on defense with starting experience, so experience is a plus. “I’m going to have fun with these kids,” Bichler said. “They have worked hard, and I think (last season) motivated them. I’m seeing that from the kids who are stepping up. The low (participation) numbers make me wonder, but I tell myself to really enjoy the kids who do come out and are willing to put in the work. I really take pride in all of them.” Reach Pete Barth at pbarth@sheboyganpress.com

Scrapping for success

Players to watch

By Pete Barth

Sheboygan Press staff

When Matt Zavada took over the Sheboygan Lutheran co-op program prior to the 2008 season, a wideeyed, excited group of sophomores bought into his approach. Two years later, last season, 14 of those players were seniors, and they led the way to the program’s best record ever — a 5-4 mark. Unfortunately, that success had a surprising and disappointing aftermath — several younger players quit. “Our numbers are the lowest I’ve had in four years,” Zavada said. “We’ve got 27 kids in the entire program. Some of the younger kids from last year, I guess we drove them out. The majority of kids I lost were sophomores. I probably lost six who would have impacted the varsity this season. We lost a total of about 10 or 12.” At a perennially numbers-starved program like Lutheran/Kohler/Christian, that’s not good news, of course. While 14 seniors led the way last year, there are just five seniors and five juniors on the roster this fall. There are 10 freshmen, the largest class in the program. The news is not all bad, however, as a stunning total of 87 players are involved in the LKC youth program for grades 5-8, including 25 eighth-graders. Despite his current depth issues at the varsity level, Zavada does like his team, and is proud of the players who have stuck with the sport. His offseason lifting and conditioning program

was a big success, he said, with up to 90 percent of his players taking part in the five-week summer program. That number has progressively improved in Zavada’s four years. About nine players will start both ways for LKC, including standout Michael Krueger, a 6-3, 210-pound offensive and defensive lineman who’s getting some college looks. “My first-team guys are good,” Zavada said. “If we stay healthy, we’ll be OK. We’ve got some excellent players. But if we get a key injury or two, it will really

set us back.” Quarterback James Misfeldt, a junior, is a good athlete who can move and throw. He started at defensive back last season so he has varsity experience, and a strong offseason has put him in position to be a playmaker. Senior two-way lineman Alex Webster, a solid 6-4, 225-pounder, returns on both sides of the ball. The other two starters back are lineman Nick Redeker and linebacker Eric Huebschman. Last year’s Crusaders relied heavily on 240-pound

battering ram Zach Webster, who gained almost 800 yards. Zavada said his team can’t line up and play that kind of power football as much this season, though LKC should still be big up front. “I’m hoping to surprise people,” Zavada said. “I tell the kids every year, we’re an underdog team here. Let’s see if we can step up and knock people off. Last year we knocked off Howards Grove on their Homecoming. I’m sure they didn’t expect that.” Reach Pete Barth at pbarth@sheboyganpress.com

By Scott Hansen

Gannett Wisconsin Media

Last year’s Kiel football team entered the season wanting to make the playoffs, something the school had only done five times previously. After finishing 4-3 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference, the Raiders earned a playoff berth and promptly defeated Racine St. Catherine’s 18-15 in their firstround game, only to lose 397 to Big Foot in the second round. So what is Kiel looking to do in 2011 following one of the best seasons in recent history? “We are definitely setting our sights higher,” head coach Chris Bennin said. “Our goal is to make it to the third level of the playoffs or higher and finish in the top two positions of the (EWC).” Luckily Kiel, which hasn’t made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since 1996-97, didn’t lose much talent as 12 starters return as part of a substantial senior class. The offensive line, a key to the Raiders’ success, heads into the season comprised of four seniors and one junior. On offense alone eight starters are seniors. “(The players’ experience) is exciting for us because the knowledge they bring with their years of experience has been extremely helpful,” Bennin said. “This is the most talented team in terms of size, quickness, speed, athletic ability and mental toughness I’ve ever had the privilege of coaching.” Bennin, in his third season at Kiel, said he has been impressed with a number

Prospects Offense (Flex-bone)

In 2010, Kiel had its first seven-win season since 1996 and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2006. GANNETT WISCONSIN MEDIA PHOTO of players in camp who have stepped up and replaced the likes of Derek Meyer, Nate Sell and Isaiah Herzog, who were all key contributors last season. “A number of studentathletes have filled in extremely nicely and exceeded my expectations …” Bennin said. The Raiders hit the weight room hard in the offseason, Bennin said, and the team is beginning to look faster and stronger than it has in years past. Kiel’s offense will look to three-year quarterback Geddy Norby for leadership, along with split ends David Esswein and Brad Jaeger.

Bennin said his team is defense-orientated and that the best players he has generally play on that side of the ball. He said this season, though, the offense could become a force. “We expect to put up huge numbers and stats on both sides of the ball,” Bennin said. “Geddy is the best quarterback in the area I believe and Austin Field is the fastest guy in the area and one of the strongest. Brad has great hands and great speed.” The Raiders need to remain healthy and luckily have been throughout training camp. As usual Bennin has been limiting the number of players

going both ways with the number capped at five this season. “Our biggest weakness is our depth,” Bennin said. “Depth will be a crucial part of our gameplan this year.” Saturday Kiel participated in a scrimmage and faced off against Ripon, Hilbert and Valders. The Raiders left Bennin impressed once again. “The kids took away the belief that they’re good, just like we have been telling them,” Bennin said. “We have been telling them all season how good they are and now they are believing they are a championship-caliber team.”

After the 2007 season, New Holstein’s football coaching staff wondered which players would step up after standout running backs Matt Preissner and Jordan Schneider graduated. The answers in 2008 were linemen Kurt Mayer, Bill Entringer and Matt Lechler. “(Then) when those guys left, we thought, ‘How do you replace them?’ ” said Greg Fictum, who is cohead coach with Chuck Lefeber. With All-State honorable mention linebacker and first-team all-conference running back Cody Thede, first-team all-conference running back Jake Entringer and standout lineman Travis Steffen, that’s how. That trio, though, graduated after last season’s team made its fifth consecutive WIAA playoff appearance and finished 8-4. The Huskies won two playoff games before their remarkable comeback attempt fell just short at Big Foot in the state quarterfinals, and the coaches are ready for the next group of leaders to take charge. “It’s your turn to step up and take your swing,” Fictum said. “I think we’ll find some diamonds in the rough.” On offense, the Huskies return 6-1, 192-pound quarterback Sam Cash, who was 76 of 139 for 1,201 yards and eight touchdowns as a junior last season. “You can tell he’s grown up,” Fictum said. “… I think he’ll be a strong point for us.” Also returning is senior

halfback/split end Ross Klapperich, who emerged last season after Jordan Birschbach was injured. Cash and Klapperich were opponents in gradeschool football, but are now meshing their talents in high school. At halfback in the WingT offense will be Willie Carter, Josh Kluever and Bobby Meyers, and Winston Polster and Cody Waldschmidt are fullbacks. Tate Winkler and Devin Mittnacht will see time at tight end. Senior tackle Greg Parker is the biggest starting offensive lineman at 6-2, 293 pounds, and the other tackles are Matt Casper and Bobby Scherer. On defense, ends Jon Roethel and Matt Casper will lead the Huskies’ 4-4

defense and the tackles will be Parker and Blaine Nielsen. Polster returns at inside linebacker. “Polster played next to Thede (last season) and was kind of overshadowed,” Fictum said. “I think he’ll come through strong this year.” The outside linebackers are Devin Boris, Carter, Chris Winkler and Josh Nisler. Cash and Mittnacht are safeties, and Meyers, Klapperich and Kluever are cornerbacks. The coaches will count on several athletes to play both ways, and that includes Klapperich, who also is the team’s kicker and kick/punt returner. The younger players have to prepare, too, in case their number is called.

“It does hurt because we would like to have 22 starters,” Fictum said. “… If one guy gets hurt, we may have to look down to the sophomore class to pick up the slack. “… As we go, I think we’re going to grow and evolve. We’ll find guys who put their foot forward and say, ‘Count me in.’” That’s why the goals are the same for New Holstein. “Our goal has always been and always will be to shoot for the conference title,” Fictum said. “… We play to get in the playoffs, and we play to make a deep runs. Who wouldn’t like to walk on the turf (at Camp Randall Stadium) in Madison? “If everybody isn’t shooting for that goal, you have to question why you’re doing it.”

How do you refill 18 of 22 starting positions, including two that produced a combined 2,359 yards rushing and 34 TDs on the ground last season? “You don’t,” said Plymouth head coach Dan Knaus. “You just hope you have kids who want to find their own niche. You look for kids who are ready to make their own names. I ask our kids, ‘How do you want to be remembered? Do you want to be remembered as the players who earned a ‘three-peat,’ or do you want to be a team that takes a step back?” Certainly, Plymouth under Knaus has become an area powerhouse. Entering his fifth year as head coach, he has guided the Panthers to back-toback nine-win seasons and two straight unbeaten runs through the Eastern Wisconsin Conference. And despite the fact that 18 starters graduated from last year’s powerful team, the word “rebuilding” has no place on the Plymouth campus. “This group, as unproven as it is, has worked as hard as the previous successful groups we’ve had, and the players are just as hungry,” Knaus said. “I think they feel like, ‘Hey, it’s our turn. Let’s keep this going.’ Obviously we’ll find out what the results are, but through camp, I’ve been pleased with how the pieces are fitting together.” Last season, three-year feature back Hayden Potts and quarterback Mitch Unger each rushed for more than 1,000 yards and ran for 17 touchdowns. Unger threw for 651 more yards. Both graduated.

Plymouth has finished unbeaten in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference the last two seasons. PHOTO BY GARY C. KLEIN/THE SHEBOYGAN PRESS Knaus said this year’s team won’t be as powerbased offensively as last year’s I-formation oriented squad was. Instead, the Panthers will try to spread defenses out more, like they did a few years ago. They will operate out of the shotgun and play, in Knaus’s words, “basketball on grass; one-on-one football on the perimeter.” The new quarterback is a promising sophomore, Kollin Neils, who is a highly regarded basketball player with good quickness, coordination and passing skills. Neils, who plays AAU basketball on a national level, led the JV football team to an 8-1 record last fall. Combining to try and fill

the void left by Potts’ departure will be a running backs group led by shifty Eric Roberts and physical Cory Unger. The only returning starters for Plymouth are receiver and defensive back Evan Guell, offensive lineman Ross Heginbottom and linebacker Matt Augustine. Guell will play both ways, but Knaus will try to two-platoon as much as possible and he thinks he has the talent and depth to pull it off. The starting offensive line is comprised of two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore, but despite that unit’s relative youth, Knaus called it “probably the bright spot of camp.” Defensively, Plymouth

should be interesting to watch, as the Panthers are going to run their disruptive version of the 3-5. At times, only one interior lineman will have his hand on the ground pre-snap. Packers fans might remember that team’s similar “psycho” package last season. Defending a championship is never easy. Defending back-to-back titles is even tougher. But at Plymouth, a high standard has been set. And Knaus expects it to be met by whoever wears the black and orange jersey. “We expect to contend for the conference title every year around here,” he said. It’s been a long four years for the Sheboygan Falls football program. After reaching the WIAA postseason 19 times from 1985 to 2006 — including a state championship in Division 3 in 2000 — missing the playoffs four straight seasons feels like an eternity. “This is going to be a really important year for us to reestablish ourselves as a competitive team in (the Eastern Wisconsin Conference) again,” first-year head coach Brian Berlin said. For Berlin, a 1996 Falls grad, getting the program back to where it once was is a top priority. “With (former head coach Dan) Juedes, we were always a top-tier team,” Berlin said. “That’s the goal, to get back into the playoffs and be one of those top teams again.” Under Juedes the Falcons thrived, never posting a losing season in his 25 years at the helm, winning 12 EWC championships and the 2000 state title. Since Juedes left, Falls has one winning season (5-4 in 2008) and last year finished just 1-8. Berlin has seen what it takes to run a successful program. After a five-year run as an assistant coach at perennial powerhouse Mequon Homestead, Berlin was at West Bend West the past two seasons. In his seven years as an assistant, Berlin’s teams made the postseason every year and, while at Homestead, he coached in three state title games, winning two. However, this is Berlin’s first

opportunity as a head coach, and there’s been a lot of learning going on early. “I think it’s been great, there’s a lot of on-the-job training,” Berlin said. “There’s some things you just kind of learn on the go, some things no one can teach you, you just have to learn them for yourself. “I also have a great staff around me, which helps.” Falls is battling low numbers this season, with only 23 full-time varsity players. Three sophomores are expected to start, including Nick Peterson at quarterback, and many JV players are backups and may see some time on special teams. The quarterback spot was destined to be senior Zach Van Engen’s this fall,

but after an injury last year required surgery and the placing of four screws and a metal plate in his forearms, Van Engen had to choose one sport to miss his senior year in order to have the screws and plate removed. Unfortunately for Berlin, Van Engen chose football. “We would have loved to have him back,” said Berlin. “I wish him the best of luck in everything.” Bobby Musil, who Berlin calls the Falcons’ best athlete, is at tailback. Musil, listed at just 5-6, is shifty and can make guys miss in the open field. Cole Heili at 6-2 will give Peterson a solid target in the passing game from his tight end spot, while another sophomore, fullback Erik Klemme, will look to open

holes for Musil to run through. Josh Rostek and Drew Setzer will see plenty of playing time at linebacker, and running back Sean McKinster — who is also the team’s emergency QB — gives the Falcons options at the skill positions. Despite the low numbers, Berlin is impressed by his players’ work ethic. “Practice has been good,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of new faces on the coaching staff; it’s kind of a fresh start for the kids. They’ve been working hard.” That’s the first step towards ending the program’s longest playoff drought in over 20 years. Reach Garrett Renzelmann at grenzelmann@sheboyganpress.com
