Who was the first creative soul? BY HEIDI HODGES I wish I could step back in time and meet the first inspired soul to view the Door County landscape. I’d like to watch as that trailblazing artist saw the landscape as something more than an opportunity to log and farm and fish and utilize. Someone who saw this peninsula not as a means to an end, but as the end itself. I’d want to get up close and see the spark—the moment the forests and shores, the water and wildflowers fed that person’s soul. Maybe the earth stood still for a heartbeat. Or maybe it raged with urgency and passion. It could have been a Woodland Native American. Maybe a European immigrant. Maybe a traveler who stumbled upon this place, trying to get from here to there. It wouldn’t be the last person. The spark ignited a fire, and more artists arrived, roused and inspired. The creative were called by a special “something” that resides on this peninsula. The arts community grew. It was built on the shoulders of luminary potters, painters, poets, singer-songwriters, actors, authors—

people who needed a space to allow their creativity to flow, unfettered. Late artist like potter Abe Cohn and painter Gerhardt Miller were pioneers in the modern arts scene. More followed. The art community grew and thrived. It continues to thrive, welcoming new generations that heed the call. Each stirred by some quality in this unique place, and surrounded by likeminded souls—creative people who set their roots deep in this stubbornly rocky soil. Yes, rocky soil. Let’s be honest, it’s not always easy. While the tourism season has been expanding, it is a peninsula of extremes. Extremely busy during the spring, summer and early autumn, and extremely subdued in the off season. But they persevere. They find a way to deal with strange pace. This place would not be the paradise it is without our artists. That’s why this guide exists—to help you find them. And maybe you’ll stumble upon a work of art that feeds your soul, the way the peninsula feeds our artists.

Sometimes the planets and moons, the yarn and the looms, all line up perfectly.

It’s sort of a “Hey! You got chocolate on my peanut butter! You got peanut butter on my chocolate” situation—but substitute design and weaving in place of sugary sweets.

During a recent interview, artist Sandra Martinez tries to explain how it all came to be. But time is short. Weaver Wence Martinez is preparing to leave for Oaxaca, Mexico, that very night. The interview is squeezed in. They’ve told the story before. Probably hundreds of times. But it’s still remarkable, and bears retelling. Sandra was living in Chicago after having graduated from UW-Green Bay. She worked a regular job, but continued in her art.

Wence & Sandra Martinez She explained she was creating forms and figures that, while not actually derivative of anything specific, had a feeling of primitive art, like petroglyphs. It was something that welled deep inside. She had pursued ceramics through half her college career (at UWGB), she explained, then “these drawings” pulled her in a different direction during the other half. “I had a mentor who didn’t discourage it,” she said. “He told me ‘If this speaks to you...’” It did. Two of Sandra’s friends, Kathy Navis and Diane Magolan, suggested her figure drawings might look interesting if they were woven. They had recently been to Oaxaca and visited the famed nearby weaving village of Teotitlan de Valle where almost 90 percent of the population weaves. So she sent one of her pieces of art to the village. “Six months later, this weaving comes, with intricate curves that the weaver just nailed.” Sandra was so taken with the resulting weaving, she visited Oaxaca herself. “I went looking for the exact person who did it. And...it was Wence.” “He had been working in Oaxaca with fine artists,” said Sandra. “My drawing had been shopped around to weavers and nobody wanted to do it,” she explained, until it was given to Wence. “I found it to be refreshing,” Wence said. He explained that he had been working on a large piece that was very detailed. But his brother approached him and said, “I have this (drawing)...do you want to do it?” “And I said, ‘Yes!’” So he took a break from the larger, more detailed piece to work on Sandra’s challenging design. He remembers the day well, when Sandra and her friends arrived, unannounced, to the village. She was fresh off the plane and all the overland travel, when she arrived at the village. She and her two friends went knocking on the door of Wence’s family’s home. He was just about to leave, he explained, only moments from stepping out. His mother answered the door, and called out “Wence! Where are you! There are three beautiful girls

looking for you!” “Not many people have photos of the first moment they met,” said Wence. Someone had taken pictures, and the moment was preserved. “I pulled out 14 new designs,” said Sandra. “And told him I didn’t have any money, so... go slow.” Once back in Chicago, she shopped the resulting weaving around. Then, a stroke of luck. The Convergence International Textile Conference was being held in Chicago that year. “I found backing to bring Wence, and to show our work,” Sandra said. But, the event was in six months, and they needed more work. So, with the new urgency, she told him to step up the timeline. That was 1988. Sandra spent that following winter in Oaxaca. Over the years, their collaboration grew. They married in 1992 and in 1994, opened their first gallery together in Door County, in a chicken coop at the Fieldstone Gallery north of Jacksonport. Then, in 2000, they found their current home and gallery, the Martinez Studio, on Hwy. 57, just south of Jacksonport. A lot has happened since then, but perhaps the most remarkable affirmation of their continued on page 30 >>>

artistic journey was learning they had won the 2018 United States Artist Fellowship Award. It was an honor they were nominated for anonymously, along with other luminaries in the arts from throughout the nation. The privately-funded granting organization recognizes “the most compelling artists working and living in the United States.” WENCE Wence started weaving in his Oaxacan village at an early age, while also working as a shepherd. Today, he owns a second home near the base of the small mountain where he once led sheep. At age 14, he received a scholarship to study at the National Institute of Tapestry in Mexico City where he learned from a master weaver from France who taught gobelins—a French style of tapestry. He learned the basics from his grandfather and father in Oaxaca, he explained, and the finer style of weaving in Mexico City. “(Gobelins) is a more fine kind of weaving. Weaving as fine art, not traditional patterns,” Sandra said. Wence also learned how to dye his own wool. He continues that practice, using Aniline dyes from Switzerland and vegetable dyes he creates, using natural materials like indigo, cochineal, pomegranate, pecan shells and goldenrod. While in Oaxaca, he forages

for traditional plants and lichens that produce earthy colors. He never bleaches the wool, so his yarns have a natural tonal variety. “That is something we are known for,” Sandra explained. “We hear from collectors that it is a soothing element in the home. You can tell it is hand spun, and line by line, there are tonal differences.” Wence returns frequently to his village, training his weavers, most notably working with his daughter and son-in-law who, for the past five years, have been weaving for the Martinez Studio full time. This past winter, Wence traveled to Oaxaca once again to work and teach there. SANDRA Sandra creates her distinctive work, some to be woven, some framed as paintings, some developed into her latest sculptures. Her artist’s space on the upper floor of the gallery is filled with pieces in progress. Her path to becoming a full-time artist took a few twists, including working as an arts administrator in Minneapolis at one time and doing odd jobs in Door County—along with Wence—as their gallery presence grew. It was all helpful in the long run, she said. “A lot of things led me down the path of not being afraid of the business end and to be creative about it,” she said.

Wence & Sandra Martinez Her art strikes a deep chord—it harkens to something primitive. It feels somehow “familiar,” but, she explains, “It’s not lifted from another culture. It’s in my head. But it is influenced by ancient mark-making. ” “‘Symbol’ communicates in non-specific and specific ways,” she said. She described her process. “It’s a stream of consciousness kind of drawing. Just an outflow of my own heart, I suppose,” she said, describing her work. With the pieces that are meant to be woven, “They start out small. We see if it (the image) will adapt well to weaving,” she said. “Wence is the colorist, dying all the wool, and deciding where details could be added, elegantly—considerations that only a weaver could weigh in on.” MARTINEZ STUDIO Sandra and Wence were both 28 when they met. “It’s that classic time when you start to recognize what you want to do and be,” said Sandra. ‘To have a partner who has that same dedication and same level of joy...the perfect storm. There is so much extra energy when we feed each other.” Together their collaboration has received a lot of attention. Their biggest collector of their work has 35 pieces, Sandra said. They have two pieces in the Smithsonian and others in the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago and the Museum of Wisconsin Art. The Miller Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay has one of Sandra’s paintings and a weaving Wence’s daughter did of it. That local and national presence “did not feel feasible,” Sandra said, until seven years ago when friends and clients suggested they get their work outside Door County. It wasn’t long before the Smithsonian and other arts organizations became aware of what they were doing. They started entering juried shows, and won awards. Then, last year they learned they had won the major fellowship from United States Artists Fellowship. “It’s like mini MacArthur Fellowship,” Sandra explained, still in awe of the recognition. Once they learned of the nomination, the artists were given time to provide supporting materials. “The writing alone took me a month,” said Sandra. “It was very daunting. I

had a lot of help.” It took six additional months to learn the results. While the award is certainly nice, the more important aspect is the recognition, Sandra said. “When the real gate keepers in the field become aware of what artists are doing. When you get the nod...” Because, as Sandra points out, there is a lot of weaving in the world. To be singled out is a very big honor.. “We’ve had a 30-year collaboration that has been so fruitful.” Part of their success has been their persistence, said Wence. And their location in Door County. “The county attracts so many people, and you never know who it is,” he said. He explained that a few well-known people have walked through the Martinez Studio doors. That’s because “(well-known people) can be incognito here. You don’t have to wear professional masks and shields you would normally would.” And yet, conversely, local artists are often noticed in the county—revered, even. “People do recognize me and the artwork we make,” said Wence.”I feel very much at home here after 30 years in the community.” “In some small way, we are cultural ambassadors,” said Sandra. “Wence may be the first Mexican...they respect,” she said, carefully. “Loving bridges get built through the artwork.”

Door Shakespeare has been bringing the Bard to the shores of Door County since 1995. Since that time, the company has been exploring the works of Shakespeare and other related playwrights, at their up-close, intimate and exciting venue, growing every year. PENINSULA PLAYERS

Situated on spectacular waterfront property on Peninsula Players Road between Egg Harbor and Fish Creek, the Peninsula Players is in its 84st season—America’s longest running professional resident summer theater. The 100th anniversary production of George Gershwin's first musical—not seen since its original production of Broadway in 1919. SEPTEMBER 4 – 7 BoomeRaging: From LSD to OMG w/ Will Durst. Comedian Will Durst returns with his tribute to the history, growth, joys, achievements and looming terrors of the Baby Boom Generation in today's youthobsessed society. SEPTEMBER 12 – OCTOBER 20 Tomfoolery. A collection of songs by Tom Lehrer, the Harvard-educated math professor who delighted millions of fans during the 1950s and 60s with is dry and cynical, but good-humored attacks on racism, pollution, pornography, the military, the Boy Scouts and, of course, mathematics. NORTHERN SKY THEATER

Surrounded by tall pines and covered with nothing but a starlit sky Northern Sky Theater has set its stage deep in the woods of Peninsula State Park since 1990 (with an even earlier history that many remember— it's parent company the Heritage Ensemble started in 1970), with the mission of providing original, professional musicals. We Like It Where? by Corrie Beula Kovacs and Stephen Kovacs, celebrates ordinary people doing extraordinary things and is based on the true “mouse that roared” story of the town of Winneconne's brief secession from Wisconsin. When the tourist-dependent burg is inadvertently left off the 1967 state highway map, Winneconnians take matters into their own hands. They concoct an ingenious publicity stunt to secede from the state, uniting their struggling community and making international news in the process. Audience-favorites Dairy Heirs and Windjammers round out the summer season. The Fall Season premiers Dad’s Season Tickets, by Matt Zembrowski. The show is a nostalgic musical celebration of family, folly and the Green Bay Packers. When Frank Kosinski’s three grown daughters learn that one will inherit his treasured Packer season tickets, old rivalries are rekindled as the sisters try to prove who is most deserving. Set in 1996, as the Packers march inevitably toward football's ultimate prize, the sparring siblings learn that theirs is a bond not easily broken, and that family isn't everything; it's the only thing.

ISLAND PLAYERS

Washington Island’s year-round community theater's mission is to bring quality theater experiencers to the Washington Island community through performances and programs for adults and school children. From January through May, the first Sunday of every month, Island Players present brief scenes, poetry and a chance to perform in a casual, low pressure atomosphere at the island Recreation Center. Then, this summer, the Players present 35 Years of Island Players: A Review July 6 – 8 at the Trueblood Performing Arts Center on the island. PENINSULA MUSIC FESTIVAL The Peninsula Music Festival is a Door County tradition spanning 66 years. The festival includes nine concerts August 6-24th featuring some of the finest performers in the classical music world. OTHER MUSIC AND THEATER There are so many venues, both public and private, it is nearly impossible to list all. Most communities offer weekly free outdoor concerts during the summer. Venues like Fishstock in Fish Creek and the Woodwalk Concert Series have been drawing big names to their stages for years. Smaller venues, such as cafes restaurants and taverns, host acclaimed musicians. There are also community theater groups like Rogue Theater in Sturgeon Bay, that perform high-quality theater.

MIDSUMMER'S MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Midsummer’s Music Festival is in its 28th season. The classical/chamber music ensemble features world-class musicians from Lyric Opera of Chicago, Pro Arte Quartet, Aspen Music Festival and Atlanta Symphony to name a few.
