COVER STORY
Giles back, ready to roll After big 2011, senior set for final campaign By McLean Bennett mbennett@sheboyganpress.com
CEDAR GROVE — Chris Zablocki knew he had something special on his hands a few years ago. Cedar Grove-Belgium’s football coach already had a stellar program fresh off a state appearance in 2008 and with a reputation for rushing the ball. He hardly needed to import an out-of-town running back. But some kid, just a sophomore, showed up to school in the fall of 2010 after his family moved to the area from Manitowoc. Zablocki’s football program hasn’t been the same since. In just his first game with the Rockets, Alex Giles ran for a jarring 180 yards on 16 carries against Random Lake (the Rockets won handily, 33-7). By halftime, he’d rushed for four touchdowns — including one on a 54-yard run and another on a 44-yard carry. “I saw a lot of talent there,” Zablocki said after a team practice earlier this month. “Alex is an exceptional young man,” he noted. “He’s a great leader.” As a junior, he racked up more than 2,600 yards rushing (averaging nearly 10 yards a carry) and 36 touchdowns. He added four TD receptions and a pair of kickoff returns for scores. Giles capped his season with an al-

most-400-yard rushing and six-score performance in a 49-48 loss against Lancaster in a Division 5 State Championship qualifier. A few people, it seems, have started taking notice of the Rockets’ rising star. Giles was one of just nine juniors named last fall to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association’s first-team AllState roster. The Associated Press named him to
its own first-team AllState squad as well. And Zablocki said several big-name universities — including Big-10 schools Minnesota and Indiana — have shown interest in recruiting the senior. “I never dreamed that I would have been in this position, getting All-State last year and having the season we did and coming out and just performing,” Giles said. “Minnesota and Indi-
ana and them, we email, me and the coaches, we email back and forth, always keeping in touch,” Giles added, noting he’s looking for a college that will “give me a shot to be the best I can be” while also providing a good education. “I don’t have to be with the best (football) program.” Part of his success, Zablocki said, lies in Giles’ natural talent. The senior, he said, has “a
specific skill set” and is “football smart.” But he’s also a hard worker, dedicated in the weight room and vigorous on the practice field. “He outworks everyone,” Zablocki said. Giles said he eschewed hitting the weights as a freshman, but has since turned the weight room into a sort of home away from home, going there even when his friends aren’t willing to go with him.
“There were a couple times even this summer where the weight room was open, and I’d be one of the only guys in there for like an hour at a time,” he said. “It’d just be me. “When I was younger, I always wanted to be that best player on the field. And it came down to working in the weight room, doing stuff when other people didn’t want to do it. … And I guess now it’s just paying off.”

It didn’t take long for Sheboygan North football coach Karl Nienhuis to get his first-ever win last year. However, getting win No. 2 was much more challenging. The Golden Raiders opened the 2011 season with a rousing 54-0 romp over Green Bay West, but followed that with five-straight losses before finally breaking through with a 16-6 win over Green Bay East. “We’re determined to put things on the right track,” Nienhuis said. “I don’t know if that’s realistic for this year or not, but the kids are working hard.” Turning around a program that has just four playoff appearances in the 36-year history of the WIAA postseason isn’t easy. It’s not something that can be done overnight. “I think we had a great offseason,” said Nienhuis. “The coaching staff really worked hard and so did the players. We put in some new weightlifting stuff. We’re looking for some improvement on all levels this year.” North’s strength last fall was its defense, a unit that held opponents to 14 or fewer points four times. Karson Bell, Trevor Peters and Abel Madrigal are sure tacklers that are the backbone of the defense. “(They) hit people, cause turnovers,” Nien-

huis said. But if the Raiders want to become more competitive in their games this year, the offense has to pick up the slack. After putting up 54 points in the season opener, North scored just 35 points in its final eight games. “We tweaked (the offense) a little bit,” Nienhuis said. “We’re going to run out of the ‘I’, run an open set and throw the ball around a little bit. “We’ll have a lot of depth at our skill positions, guys who put in a lot of work in open gyms. The skill position competition should be pretty good this year; last year I
didn’t think we had as many options.” Senior quarterback Aaron Peterson returns, and junior running back Danny Wild is a hard runner whom Nienhuis is excited to watch this year. “Peterson had a good offseason,” said Nienhuis. “He’s got a lot of experience, really worked hard. He looks good, smart and his arm strength has improved.” North is up in numbers, and a strong junior class could help lead the way towards a playoff berth. “We’re doing good,” Nienhuis said. “We’ve probably talked less about (the playoffs) since
I took over. I think the kids understanding that (a playoff berth) comes through the weight room and comes through playing together is how you reach those goals.” With an eight-game schedule this year — meaning no non-conference game — and schools like Pulaski, Manitowoc, Green Bay Southwest, Green Bay Preble and Ashwaubenon on the slate, it won’t be a walk in the park to get to the playoffs. But Nienhuis is comfortable with where his team is at. “We fell good about where we’re moving,” said Nienhuis. “It’s a tough conference, we want to close the gap.”

COMMENTARY
Odd schedule in ’12 The football landscape for the Sheboygan area as well as the state will look and feel a bit different this fall. Just 11 area schools will field full, traditional 11-man football teams with a 12th — Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah — going to 8-man this season. The co-op of Sheboygan Lutheran/Kohler/Christian will only play a JV schedule due to not having enough players to field a varsity team. These changes, along with a shorter schedule — teams will play only eight regular-season games — gives the face of prep football a big makeover. Fox River Classic Conference teams won’t play a non-conference game, meaning each game is immensely important for each team’s playoff hopes. The Central Lakeshore Conference will compete with five teams. If this year were a regular nine-game slate, CLC teams would have had to play more nonconference games (five) than conference games (four). It has taken plenty of creativity for Cedar Grove-Belgium, Howards Grove, Oostburg, Ozaukee and Random Lake to fill out their schedules. The Rockets will face two opponents from Michigan while Oostburg is set to take on an Illinois squad. All but Howards Grove have at least one Saturday game scheduled. Because of the limited number of teams in Wisconsin that sponsor 8man football — just 16 total —- Elkhart Lake will have to do plenty of traveling for games. Elkhart has a home-

Another scheduling quirk happens with Sheboygan North and Sheboygan South on Sept. 29. The Redwings will travel to Manitowoc to face the Ships for their Homecoming; Manitowoc has played its Homecoming game on Saturday afternoon for years. But also taking place that day is North’s Homecoming against Green Bay East celebrating the school’s 75th year. North and South haven’t played on the same Saturday since Oct. 15, 1994, when they faced each other at Urban Field the final year before lights were installed. North won the game 54-20.

That same year was the last time each state champion played only 13 games, which will now happen this season. The decision to switch from nine games to eight was due to the change in the playoff schedule that was implemented last year. The old threegames-in-10-days schedule was ousted and each round of the playoffs was spaced one week apart. Due to the change, the postseason now takes longer, resulting in the regular season starting
earlier. When the calendar falls the way it does this year, coaches voted to eliminate one regularseason game instead of beginning practice Aug. 1. Schedules will return to nine games in 2013, but the same issue arises in 2017 and 2018, when teams will once again be knocked down to eight games. By then, who knows what the landscape of high school football in the area and state will look like.

After making the playoffs in 2010, Sheboygan South fell to 2-7 a year ago. With 11 returning starters, the Redwings are hoping for another postseason run this fall. PHOTO BY BRUCE HALMO/THE SHEBOYGAN PRESS By Garrett Renzelmann grenzelmann@sheboyganpress.com
Three times last season, Sheboygan South’s football team was either tied or trailing by one score in the fourth quarter and lost. Change those defeats to victories, and the Redwings would have earned a second-straight trip to the WIAA postseason. Instead, South finished 2-7 overall, 2-6 in the Fox River Classic Conference a year after making just the third playoff appearance in school history in 2010. “We were so young last year,” eighth-year head coach Chris Hein said. “(This year) we feel like we have a nice nucleus back.” Six starters return on defense and seven players are back that saw extensive playing time,
giving Hein and his coaching staff confidence the Redwings will be improved on that side of the ball. “We’re looking to improve on defense,” said Hein. “That’s one thing we really struggled with last year. We have all three linebackers back, two defensive linemen back and a secondary player. That’s one area we can improve.” Offense hasn’t been a problem for South; the Redwings have averaged more than 21 points a game each of the past two seasons with its deadly spread attack. This year, South will look to be under center more than in the past, hopefully creating a better balance between the run and the pass. “We really want to run the ball better this year,” Hein said. “We led the
conference in passing the last two years. I’ve always felt you have to run the ball to win championships.” Jake Knuth won an open competition for the starting quarterback spot, a position he played his freshman year before playing tight end/receiver the past two. “This year we left it wide open,” said Hein. “Jake and I were talking this spring, he said he was interested in the spot so I told him I’d give him a shot. He has the most swagger, he’s been the most secure with the ball, he commands the huddle the best. He won the job.” Knuth will have plenty of options, with talented receivers Taylor Gregory and Mitchell Martinez on the outside and a trio of running backs in Ben Steen, Tristan Schmidt and Boris Ristivojevic.
There’s also fullback Andrew Wildmann, whom Hein called “one of the best all-around players on the team.” “We have three tailbacks that we love,” Hein said. “And great athletes at wide receiver.” A favorable home schedule — South hosts Green Bay West, Green Bay East, De Pere and Bay Port (combined 10-28 in 2011) — and plenty of returning experience have the Redwings thinking playoffs. “We have the most returning starters out of any team on our schedule,” said Hein. “We feel like we have a chance to get back into the playoffs this year. Dan Knaus Year: Sixth Record: 35-17 Playoff appearances: 5 (2-5) Conference titles: 2
Knocking on the door By McLean Bennett mbennett@sheboyganpress.com
PLYMOUTH — A few years after Vince Lombardi’s boys hoisted the first-ever Super Bowl trophy, a much-younger bunch of football players from about an hour south of Green Bay were lifting up their own firstever prize. Plymouth won a Division 3 state title in 1976, the first year the WIAA sponsored a state football tournament. Two years later, the team capped an undefeated season with another state trophy, practically cementing the central Sheboygan County town as one of the WIAA’s first state football powerhouses. “There’s great tradition there,” Panthers coach Dan Knaus said recently, referring to his team’s decades-old legacy that still lingers on some area football fans’ minds. The Panthers haven’t played in a state title game since 1978, though they’ve been knocking on the proverbial door for a long time. The team didn’t make a single playoff appearance through the 1980s, but has made postseason runs in all but two years since 1991 (they missed the playoffs in 1993 and 2001). Those playoff runs have all been short-lived

though, never lasting more than two games. Plymouth dropped out in the first round last year after advancing one game further each of the previous two seasons. “I would like to go deep in the playoffs. Get past the second round, and then go from there I guess,” senior linebacker Owen Henricksen said. “I’d say that’d be my
biggest goal: winning conference and getting to the third round of the playoffs.” Besides constructing a deep postseason run, players have at least one other goal this year: The Panthers, who have earned a reputation recently as one of the Eastern Wisconsin Conference’s perennial teams to beat, settled for second
place in the standings last fall behind Kewaskum; the team’s dead-set on retaking the conference reins this year. (The Panthers were conference champs in 2009 and ’10.) “Our coaches every year have been setting each team up every year to win the conference championship,” senior running back Eric Roberts said. “And we were just short last year, we won it the year before, so this year we’d like to get it back.” Players, then, have a short — but ambitious — to-do list this fall: First, take the conference championship; then, get at least three (or four) games into the playoffs. Knaus, though, knows there’s another goal some Plymouth old-timers would like to see the team accomplish: Recatapulting the Panthers to their 1970s glory days. “The community knows — it’s dying for another opportunity to get to (a state championship),” Knaus said. “We’re trying to build the program back so we can get the community back there.” It took the Packers a few decades to get a third Super Bowl ring after winning a pair in the 1960s. Plymouth, it seems, is due for a return.

The next step

By Garrett Renzelmann grenzelmann@sheboyganpress.com
A year ago, Sheboygan Falls’ football team ended a four-year hiatus from the WIAA postseason under then-first-year head coach Brian Berlin. And while a return to the playoffs was a welcome sight in Falls, it wasn’t always pretty in the beginning. The Falcons opened the 2011 campaign with a 19-13 loss to Elkhorn. Then after an easy 47-6 win over Green Bay NEW Lutheran, Falls dropped a 49-13 decision to rival Plymouth, which was followed by a 34-20 setback against Campbellsport. “We had a new coaching staff, new system, low numbers, all of that working against us,” Berlin said. “It was a little bit of a hurdle last year to get things going.” Sitting at 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference, it appeared Falls was going to miss the playoffs for the fifth straight year. But that’s when it all turned around. The Falcons ripped off four wins in a row, including back-to-back, down-to-the-wire victories over Two Rivers (21-16) and Kiel (17-14). That qualified Falls for the postseason, a place it hadn’t been since 2006. “Within the community, you could just feel the enthusiasm after the year was over,” said Berlin. “The enthusiasm, community support rapidly improved.”

Now Falls is looking to take the next step, becoming an annual playoff team and challenging for a conference title. “I just think with the carry-over with the coaching staff and the consistency there,” Berlin said, “with so many guys coming back we’ve progressed a lot quicker on both sides of the ball (this year). We’re ahead of the curve.” Anchoring the offensive and defensive lines is 6-foot-4, 285-pound senior Tyler Testroete — a second-team All-EWC pick on offense and honorable mention on defense a year ago. Due to a deep linebacker corps, which includes Drew Setzer (6-3, 210), Josh Rostek (6-1, 185) and Kyle
McCarty (5-11, 180), the Falcons are switching to a 3-5 defense. “Our linebacker crew is really the strength of our defense right now,” Berlin said. “Testroete is our nose (tackle) and really brings a lot of chaos up the middle.” Starting quarterback Nick Peterson is back, and a crowded backfield of Eric Klemme, Sean McKinster and Tyler Chappa give the Falcons plenty of options offensively. “I really feel like with those three and the guys behind them,” said Berlin, “I feel like I’ve got six guys I can throw in there. There’s definitely a lot more competition at those positions this year.” With increased numbers — even a few soccer
players who are out for football for their senior year — the Falcons seem poised to take the next step towards returning to their dominant form, when they qualified for the playoffs 19 times in 22 years. “Taking the next step, that’s the mission this year,” Berlin said. “I thought we really overachieved last year with the hand that we were dealt. I told the team this year, I’ve never seen a team come together so fast in two-a-days, and not care about themselves, care about the team. “I grew up in Falls, and football was the big sport forever. It’s starting to feel like we’re moving towards that again.”

KIEL — Kiel is on the verge of a program milestone, but it’s going to take success from a new crop of performers to accomplish the mission. Same as last year. The Raiders qualified for the postseason in 2011, led by the area’s top pass-catch combo. Geddy Nordby was the area’s second-best quarterback (1,484 yards, 14 touchdowns) and David Esswein was the top receiver and one of the top playmakers (47-988-10). Both are gone. But fourth-year coach Chris Bennin said the situation is nothing new. Standout athletes have come and gone, but the team is hopeful the results remain the same. “Every year we lose a lot, and there’s always kids who seem to step up,” said Bennin. “We lost some key guys, but a lot of kids at camp are showing some skill.” Senior wideout Jake Groth, a top candidate to fill Esswein’s shoes this fall, said the team’s goal is to go 4-3 and get back to the WIAA postseason for the third-straight season. The Raiders have never in their history qualified for the playoffs three consecutive seasons. “We have speed. We have a lot of potential,” added senior Jordan Meyer, a returning twoway starter on the line. “We’ll definitely compete.” Qualifying for a third time is the goal, and Ben-

nin understands it won’t be easy. But on the Raiders’ side is a level of speed and quickness that rates above other teams in the program’s recent history. “This is the fastest I’ve ever seen us,” said Bennin. “We’re fast, from center to safety. I’m excited about that.” Jack Meunier, who started as a cornerback as a freshman last season, will be the starting quarterback this year as a sophomore. He led the junior varsity team at QB last fall. Bennin is excited to use Meunier, who runs a 4.6 40-yard-dash, as a multi-threat leader. “He understands the
game, but he’s only a sophomore,” said Bennin. “Jack’s really picking up on it quick.” Speed will be the key at the skill positions, with Aaron and Austin Field expected to get touches. “They’re extremely fast and agile,” Bennin said of the Fields, accomplished gymnasts with the YMCA program. “We’re excited to have their speed on the field.” On defense, Kiel should be anchored by Meyer, a returning AllEWC lineman — “great shape, extremely quick, physically strong,” said Bennin — and Groth, a returning All-EWC corner who is returning from a broken collarbone
suffered midway through last season. Good things are also expected from Brock Schneider (6-4, 230), a junior lineman with speed (5.0 in the 40). In fact, good things are expected for Kiel in general. And if the Raiders can win some of those big conference games — Sheboygan Falls and Two Rivers, in particular — the goal of becoming a perennial playoff team may be here. “I know this is a playoff team,” said Bennin. “It’s going to come down to our experience, and how they cope with adversity. It should be a good season. Should be a solid season.”

Plenty of preseason hype has narrowed the conference title races down to a select number of contenders in the three conferences in which area teams play. In the Fox River Classic Conference, Green Bay Southwest appears to be the clearcut favorite, with its top challenge coming from Green Bay Preble. In the Eastern Wisconsin Conference, Plymouth and Kewaskum appear set to fight it out for the top spot. The Panthers and Indians have won or shared the conference title in each of the past nine years. And in the Central Lakeshore Conference, 2011 state semifinalist Cedar GroveBelgium appears set to win its seventh league crown in the last nine years.

» Ashwaubenon slipped from going undefeated in the FRCC in 2010 to 4-4 in 2011. Quarterback Kyle Mrozinski returns to lead an offense that averaged nearly 30 points a game in the regular season last year. » Bay Port will be under the new direction of Gary Westerman, who comes over from FRCC rival Pulaski. If the Pirates’ young players can step up and prove themselves early, Bay Port should once again be back near the top of the FRCC standings. » De Pere will rely on its defense, where seven starters return. The Redbirds struggled moving the ball offensively last year due to a lack of size on the line, but should be in better shape this year and have a solid shot at another playoff appearance. » Green Bay East hasn’t
made the playoffs since 2007, and the Red Devils were struck with several key injuries last season en route to a 2-7 record. » Green Bay Preble finished tied for second in the FRCC last year, and with another year of implementing second-year coach Paul Donart’s system, the Hornets should contend for the conference title. Preble’s strength is its defense, which should keep the team in each of its games. » Green Bay Southwest went to the state semifinals in Division 2 and has gone to the playoffs four straight years under coach Bryce Paup. The Trojans are expected to challenge for a spot in the state title game this fall. Returning experience on offense and a stout defense led by Nathan Paup makes Southwest to favorites in the FRCC. » Green Bay West struggled mightily in 2011, but should be improved this year. Numbers are up for the Wildcats, as the program works at becoming a relevant squad in the conference. » Manitowoc lost 27 seniors, including six All-FRCC first-team selections, four second-team selections and three honorable mentions, from a team that won the FRCC with a perfect 8-0 record last year. » Notre Dame advanced to the Division 3 state semifinals after going just 5-4 in the regular season before running into eventual state champion West De Pere. The Tritons will have plenty of talent to replace, including running back Alex Miller, the offensive player of the year in the FRCC a year ago. » Pulaski has a new head coach in Jed Kennedy, who won the Division 1 state title
last year at Kenosha Bradford. The Red Raiders will implement the wishbone offense and should showcase some solid athletes on the defensive side of the ball.
EWC » Campbellsport has increased its win total over the last three years from one to two to five last season. Continued progression will result in the program’s first playoff berth since 2005. » Kewaskum has dueled with Plymouth at the top of the EWC for several years, and claimed conference supremacy last year with a perfect 7-0 league mark. Six starters are back, along with 14 letterwinners. » Two Rivers lost twoway first-team all-conference selection Shawn Shillcox, but should be in good shape overall heading into 2012. Head coach Brent Luebke returns 12 starters and 25 letterwinners from last year’s team. » Waupun has had a tough go of it lately, winning just five conference games in four years, including a 1-6 mark last year. Following the graduation of a large senior class, it could be another challenging season for the Warriors. Press predicitions FRCC 1. Green Bay Southwest 2. Green Bay Preble 3. Ashwaubenon 4. NEW HOLSTEIN — New
Holstein won just one game in 2011, ending a five-year stretch of playoff-berth football. The Huskies won seven games in 2008 and 2009, then went 8-4 in ’10 before going just 1-8 last season. Head coach Greg Fictum is gone, now a coach at Concordia University-Mequon. The school just hired a new coach in late July, forcing a quick turnaround. Fortunately, the transition will be as smooth as possible with the promotion of Matt Rupp, the program’s JV coach and varsity assistant for the last 12 years. “It hasn’t been a lot of change, to be honest,” said Rupp, a science teacher at the high school. “We’ve always worked together in everything we do. It doesn’t feel that different, except I have to give the speeches.” Longtime coach Chuck Lefeber, a former head and co-head with Fictum, remains on staff as a varsity assistant, and Rupp is grateful to pick the brain of the veteran. “He’s our defensive guru, but he knows everything. He’s one of the smarter high school coaches around.” Rupp said it helps that he and Lefeber have the same philosophy: Defense wins football games. “We want to make a commitment to our defense. That’s our goal,”

PROSPECTS Offense (Wing-T)

said Rupp. New Holstein’s lineups will be fairly fresh; just two starters return on each side of the ball. Thus, the Huskies plan to get back to basics, using the run-oriented Wing-T offense to gain yards on the ground. Shouldering that load will be a pair of speedy, if small in stature, running backs. Junior Mike Blanck (5-9, 145) is one of the Eastern Wisconsin Conference’s top sprinters, and senior Adam Schmitz (5-10, 150) is “right there with him” in terms of quickness and speed, said Rupp. Junior Mark Sippel (6-1, 175), arguably the team’s top defensive back last year, will take over quarterback duties for the graduated Sam Cash. “We don’t have any
one guy that anybody fears,” said Rupp. “We have to play together, play as a team, and get back to New Holstein football, with three guys getting the ball, using fakes.” The line will be anchored by senior Shaun Mayr (6-4, 285), a returning starter on both sides. He’ll move from center to tackle on offense. The rest of the up-front will be filled mostly by sophomores and juniors. Rupp says what they lack in experience they make up for in sheer strength. That includes junior Bob Scherer (6-3, 240), who squatted 550 pounds and benched more than 300 earlier this month. He recently turned 16 years of age. Scherer wanted to be a sprinter during the spring track and field season, to help
with his quickness for football. The weight room was busy this summer. Rupp says the team had 79percent attendance hitting weights three times per week, plus speed and agility training on the side. New Holstein is hoping to limit two-way players. The program had 68 boys go out for football, including 27 freshmen. The Huskies were shut out three times en route to a winless EWC record in ’11, but the players are focused on turning things around right away. “We have to do everything right, we have to do technique right, and play football the way it was meant to be played,” said Rupp. “All those little things will add up to big things.”

CEDAR GROVE — Cedar Grove-Belgium’s exit from the playoffs last year was an understandably bitter pill to swallow. The Rockets, celebrating their return to the top of the Central Lakeshore Conference after handing the reins to Oostburg a year before, had one last hurdle between themselves and their first trip to State since 2008. That hurdle, though, proved just a little bit too big. Just one point too big, to be exact. Lancaster, the eventual WIAA Division 5 State Football runner-up, held on for a 49-48 win over Cedar Grove in a statequalifying match last November. (Lancaster went on to lose 44-43 in overtime in the state title game to Colby, the same team that beat Cedar Grove in the 2008 state championship.) “It was a heartbreaker to put up those kind of numbers and kind of help the team through and to end up losing by one,” said running back Alex Giles, who rushed for nearly 400 yards and scored six times in the loss. “I mean, it hurts and it sets that fire. “I’m hungry now,” he said. Cedar Grove has made nine straight playoff appearances since 2003, and became the area’s most recent football team to advance to the state title game in 2008.

The Rockets last year went undefeated through the regular season to finish first in the CLC standings. It was the third time in four years Cedar Grove had finished undefeated and atop the conference — 2010 marked the only exception, when the Rockets went 6-3 and took third place behind Ozaukee and conferencechampion Oostburg. Rockets coach Chris Zablocki said the team will be a bit smaller this year — not just in terms of player numbers (the roster is down a bit from last year), but also in players’ sheer physicality. He thinks the team will do just fine, though,
noting the team promises to have some faster players. “If people look on the field, they’re going to realize that we’re not as big as we usually are. … But people will notice that, I think, we’re a lot faster than we’ve ever been.” Smaller or not, faster or not, Zablocki said at least one other thing is certain this season: Players are awfully motivated after last fall’s heartbreaking loss to Lancaster. “It was a tough loss,” he said. “But everything happens for a reason. We learned and became better men from that situation, that game. It
was a great game; we just happened to be on the wrong side of the ball. “As long as everyone gives 100 percent — give everything they have, and leave everything on the field — we always will be satisfied,” the head coach said, nodding to the emphasis his program places on effort as much as it does on winning. But, he noted, a state title doesn’t make for a bad carrot on a stick. “Every team’s goal when they start camp,” Zablocki said, “is to bring home that gold ball, in whatever division they are in.”

It was a long, hard decision Elkhart LakeGlenbeulah football coach Barry Feldmann had to make. At Elkhart, a school with an enrollment of just 149, the year-in and year-out struggle to field an 11-man football team was growing harder and harder. So the Resorters made the decision to switch to 8-man football, giving the program a bit of a jolt. “I believe it is absolutely the right move for our football program, numbers-wise,” Feldmann said. “With our enrollment, we’re just not getting enough kids out for 11-man football to be competitive anymore.” Proof that Elkhart was struggling to remain competitive was evident last season, when the Resorters went 2-4 in the Central Lakeshore Conference despite have what Feldmann called “probably the most talented senior class that I’ve ever coached.” That class included unanimous first-team All-CLC quarterback Kyle Rentmeester, who threw for 1,417 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, along with receiver Josh Schneider (43 catches, 665 yards, three TD) and running back Blake Loucks (897 yards and 11 TD). “Absolutely, if we were going to make a run in the CLC that was going to be the year,” said Feldmann. “With extra players, we could get some kids some rest. That’s

what hurt us.” Replacing Rentmeester will be Elliot Van Oss, while Taylor Kaboord — who caught 27 passes for 400 yards and four scores a year ago — gives Elkhart a dangerous playmaker on the outside. Feldmann is also expecting big things out of Devin Pfeifer on both sides of the ball as well as Cody Wilterdink and Shane Schanke. “Our senior class this year is pretty decent,” said Feldmann. “We’ve got some underclassman that are very talented. We definitely worked in the offseason on foot speed and getting quicker; we are a lot faster than what we were last year.” In 8-man football, the two offensive tackles and a receiver are taken off
the field and the game is played on an 80-by-40 yard field. Elkhart played Stockbridge last year in an 8-man game and rolled to a 67-0 win. “Last year when we played Stockbridge, we didn’t really know what we were doing,” Feldmann said. With just 16 schools in the entire state sponsoring 8-man football, the Resorters will be doing plenty of traveling this year now that they are no longer in the CLC, including a four-hour oneway trip to Three Lakes in October, along with trips to Beaver Dam and Madison. “I’ll miss the competition (in the CLC),” Feldmann said. “Our kids were talking about it (Wednesday), they’re going to miss the rivalry with Howards Grove for
the County A sign. Hopefully now, with our new chapter, we can find somebody close and start that kind of rivalry. I wish everyone in the CLC good luck, I’m going to miss it.” And while 8-man football does not have a playoff system yet, there is a jamboree scheduled for early November that will put the top four teams from the north against the top four teams from the south, giving Elkhart something to play for. There’s certain to be plenty of bumps in the road in the inaugural run as an 8-man team, but for a program losing the numbers battle, it was the right choice. “It was a very tough decision,” Feldmann said. “It’s just the numbers aren’t going to lie. Eightman was the way to go.”

HOWARDS GROVE —
Tigers football coach Dave Schmid has some ambitious goals for the 2012 season. He wants to win the Central Lakeshore Conference title and take homefield advantage into the playoffs. But he’ll have to contend with plenty of challenges — many of them outside his control — if he wants those dreams to come true. Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah’s football team is dropping out of the CLC to form an 8-man team instead, competing with similar-sized teams from across the state. Lutheran/Kohler/Christian, meanwhile, isn’t fielding a varsity squad this fall. “It’ll be a very tough conference race because the (teams) that are left
are perennially the teams that are in the upper half,” Schmid said. “So every game I think is going to be a battle.” Cedar Grove-Belgium has had an effective lock on the conference’s top spot in recent seasons, and looks to remain a strong contender this year with star running back Alex Giles back in the lineup for his senior campaign. Oostburg, Ozaukee and Random Lake will round out the conference. The Tigers haven’t finished better than fourth place in the CLC since 2008, when Howards finished second in the league. But Schmid said he sees some similarities between this fall’s senior class and the one in ’08. “They had decent numbers, which we have in our senior class. And they both like to work out
hard in the offseason and love football,” he said. “Where that (2008) team has a little bit of an advantage on us is we just had more juniors on the team than we do this year.” A smaller team is another of those problems Schmid will have to deal with. “I had one of the biggest teams in my 11 years (coaching) last year as far as numbers go, and this year I have one of the smallest teams,” he said. But none of it — not the leaner conference, not the recent string of middling seasons, not the smaller roster — is keeping Schmid from setting his sights high this fall. The team’s first goal, as it is every year, will be to win the conference championship this season. “Beyond that, then, we’d like to win a home
playoff game,” Schmid said. The Tigers have made a habit of going to the playoffs, missing the postseason tournament just twice in the last 10 years — in 2002 and ’10. But they haven’t played a home playoff game since 2008. That year, the third-seeded Tigers won at home in the first round before losing on the road in the second. In 2009 and ’11, the Tigers opened their postseasons with firstround losses on the road. “If we do win conference and take care of business there, or finish pretty high, we can get a home playoff game and that’s usually easier to play at home than it is to go on the road to somebody else’s place,” Schmid said. And after that? “… We’ll see where the playoff road takes us.”

OOSTBURG — Scott Ring knows his football team has plenty of obstacles standing in the way of a conference championship this season. Cedar Grove-Belgium has been the Central Lakeshore Conference’s perennial crème de la crème, winning the conference title three of the past four years. Ring’s Oostburg team, meanwhile, has lost its entire starting offensive line from last fall and has a roster loaded with fresh, untested talent. “To get to where we can beat Cedar Grove, we have a learning curve to get over first,” Oostburg’s coach said earlier this month. “We have a lot of tests in front of us.” For one, the entire offensive line will be new, forcing “a big learning curve” along the offensive front, Ring said. “In defense, too, we’re playing a lot of guys in positions that have never played there before.” Since 2009 — when this year’s seniors were freshmen — Oostburg has proved itself to be a perennial top-tier team in the CLC. The Flying Dutchmen took second place behind Cedar Grove in 2009 and ’11, and won the conference title in 2010. The Dutch have made playoff appearances five straight years since 2007, and have advanced to the postseason 10 times since 1997 (they missed the playoffs in 1998, ’01, ’03, ’04 and ’06).

But with such a freshfaced bunch this year — Ring said his roster boasts just six seniors — it’s tough to make bold predictions about what the 2012 campaign might hold in store. “With having a young team like that, it’s kind of tough to be able to say, ‘This is what I’m going to be happy with,’” he said. “I’m expecting their best. And what their best ends up being is exactly what I’m looking for. They have nothing to go off of from season to season with a group that has never really played together.”
Tony Teunissen, a senior nose tackle who’s been with the team since his freshman year, said it would “be nice” to win a conference championship this fall, but noted his real goal lies in the postseason. For him, a satisfactory season, he said, would involve “at least getting into the playoffs, with like a 7-2 record or something like that.” “I think our chances to get into the playoffs are pretty good,” Teunissen said. Despite the growing pains Oostburg might face this fall, Ring noted
he refuses to label 2012 a “rebuilding” year. For his small group of seniors, he said, this fall will be anything but a rebuilding season — it’s their goingaway party. “These kids get that one chance,” he said. “You can’t bring them back for another year … So I never like to say ‘rebuilding season.’ I don’t think that’s what it is. “I think the biggest strength for this team,” Ring added, “is that they are willing to learn, they’re willing to get better, they want to get better, they listen to what you say. They’re very coachable.”

FREDONIA — After two years of running the single wing offense, a style seldom seen anywhere in the state, Ozaukee will no longer be able to sneak around and through unsuspecting opponents. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be any easier to stop. Third-year coach Jim Lippe has helped turn around a program that had limited success — six straight years without playoff berth — into a solid program. After going 3-6 in 2009, Ozaukee went 8-2 in Lippe’s first season and 6-4 last year. With a brutal schedule and the loss of a 2,000yard rusher, things will not get easier this fall. But the Warriors are poised to keep the success going. “Everything’s going good,” said Lippe. “We’ve had really good fall camp so far.” Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah left the Central Lakeshore Conference to play 8-man club football, and Lutheran/Kohler/Christian dropped its varsity team for one season. That created a tough situation for the five remaining CLC teams to find four non-conference games in an eight-game season. Ozaukee’s schedule is considered the most difficult in the state based on last year’s records. It includes nonconference games against a state champion (Fond du Lac Springs) and a semifinalist (Bur-

lington Catholic Central), plus CLC powerhouse Cedar Grove-Belgium. “We have quite the schedule,” chuckled Lippe. “It is what it is. We have a tough group of kids. We’re going to play some football.” The single wing lines up three running backs behind center but no true quarterback. Last year, it was Devon Linzenmeyer who carried the show, rushing for 2,163 yards and 30 TDs. He was also the team’s top passer. No one player will replace that production, but Lippe likes four players who will combine to get the job done. Lippe said senior Logan Smith will likely get the most touches, though seniors Ethan Brouillette and Hunter Hess, and
junior Kevin Beckmann will all get their hands on the ball. “They’re not Devon Linzenmeyer, but they’re real nice running backs,” said Lippe, “We’re definitely going to be able to run the ball this year, no doubt about it.” Three returning offensive linemen — seniors Hunter Vande Boom and Bryce Erlwig and junior Cody Stageman — will lead block for the foursome. While the offense gets the headlines, Ozaukee’s defense should be improved, especially at linebacker and in the secondary. Nine of the top 11 defenders from last year are back. Leading will be senior Steve Steet, a 6-foot-7 senior who roams the
backfield at safety. Lippe said Street’s speed and presence allows for aggressive play in the front seven. “Our goal is, we’re hoping to win a CLC championship this year,” said Street. “We should be very good on offense, and defense, too. Improving line play is going to be the key.” Along with running the ball, Hess, Brouillette and Beckmann will double as a formidable linebacking corps. Ozaukee went 6-4 last season, with two of the losses coming from Springs, one from CGB and the other from Oostburg, which finished 7-3. “Our goal is to win conference and take a nice run into the playoffs,” said Lippe.

RANDOM LAKE — For more than a decade, Random Lake football was the benchmark of smallschool football in the area, and kings of the Central Lakeshore Conference. From 1995 through 2009, the program had zero or one loss in CLC play 11 times, went unbeaten four times and qualified for the playoffs every year but one. The Rams had just one CLC losing season in that stretch, back in 2000. But Random won just one game in 2011, down from three the year before. That season snapped a nine-year stretch of qualifying for the playoffs. The goals don’t change
in Random Lake. This year’s team is poised to show that the program’s current trend is a hiccup in its proud history. “We want to work hard and improve every week, and want to compete in each game. We want to give ourselves a chance to win,” said coach Chris Bichler, entering his 15th season. “Those (goals) aren’t going to change.” With Elkhart Lake leaving the CLC to play 8-man club football, and Lutheran/Kohler/Christian taking a year off from varsity play, getting the needed conference victories to return to the postseason will be even tougher. “Our conference has always been a very good football conference,” said Bichler.
The Rams have numbers issues this year — just 36 boys are out for varsity and JV combined — though the youth program is currently thriving. And Bichler is pleased with the dedication shown in practice. “Numbers are down, but the kids who are out are working hard and doing OK,” said Bichler. There will be a lot of two-way players, but many of them have considerable playing experience. The offense can lean on returning starting quarterback Brady Schmidt. Among returning signal-callers in the area, Schmidt, a senior, ranks No. 2; he threw for 964 yards and six touchdowns. “He knows the offense, and he’s pro-
gressed and grown,” said Bichler. “He definitely gives us a nice presence on the field.” Random Lake has always been a run-first team, and the halfback duties will be filled by three different players with the graduation of Justin Lunde (787 yards, 14 TD). Fullback, however, is set with experienced returnees in senior Jake Schwan and junior Jesse Verbanec. Whether or not this is the season Random Lake gets back to its winning ways, the Rams are focused to have a bounceback season, building to a brighter future that mirrors its past. “Last year is in the back of our heads,” said Schmidt. “We’re looking to get better and keep improving.”
