G U I D E 2012 - ISSUE 6 HOW TO USE THE GUIDE This year’s guide is divided into five sections. Each ad, descriptive listing, and map is color coded to correspond to its section. Red includes the peninsula’s southern communities and Sturgeon Bay. Green includes Carlsville, Jacksonport, Egg Harbor, Baileys Harbor & Juddville. Orange includes Fish Creek & Ephraim. Blue includes Sister Bay. Purple includes Ellison Bay & North. “Pages” 1-142: In this guide, you’ll see what appear to be page numbers between 1 and 142. While they act and flow like page numbers, many are also advertisers’ “locator numbers” to help you find the location on the map listed next to the number. 200 and above: The maps, however, also contain “locator numbers” 200 and above. Each of these numbers relates to another location on the Door Peninsula. Index - Artists: In the alphabetical index at the back of the guide, you’ll find a comprehensive list of artists cross-referenced to locations where their work can be seen. What follows the artist’s name is a “locator number.” A number 145 or below identifies the “page” of an ad either of the artist’s work or the location where the art work can be seen, and the map for that location. If that number is 200 or higher, however, you must look at the referenced map to find the location. For example: • 11 refers to “page” 11 • 235 refers to the dot # 235 on green map A

public galleries

While Door County has be-

come celebrated on a national scale for its many private art galleries and working art studios, it also boasts five galleries whose exhibitions are open free to the public. Each of these expertly curated facilities offers a unique experience for art enthusiasts as well as for serious collectors, and each provides a remarkable window into the thriving peninsula arts scene. This year is a special one for one of Door County’s most venerable arts institutions: the Francis Hardy Center for the Arts in Ephraim. The Hardy, as it’s affectionately known, is commemorating its 50th season this year; in addition to the full roster of exhibitions and events at its 154-year-old Anderson Dock location, the arts center will host a special anniversary show to celebrate the life and works of founder Francis Howe Hardy and reflect on a half century of operations in Northern Door. That’s not the only big anniversary this summer. Through special July and August exhibits at the Door Community Auditorium’s Link Gallery, visitors will mark the The Ridges Sanctuary’s 75th anniversary and the Peninsula Music Festival’s 60th anniversary, respectively. Then of course there are the series of artsrelated events, from gallery talks, opening receptions and art classes to signature fundraisers and of course the 2012 Door County Plein Air Festival. More exhibitions, events and dates will be added to the Door County calendar as the summer season draws nearer. Keep an eye out for updates, check the websites provided below or give the public galleries a call to learn more.

Francis Hardy Center for the Arts: The Hardy is located at the An-

public galleries Melzer Gallery: In 2008, Birch Creek Music Performance Center opened this public gallery on its property, 3 miles east of Egg Harbor on County Highway E. The gallery originally showcased “Birch Creek Through Lens and Brush,” an exploration of the music center as a source of inspiration for visual artists. It evolved into “Birch Creek Associates - Celebrating 20 Years” and featured photography that documented the work and successes of Birch Creek’s volunteer corps. This year, the Melzer Gallery continues to display photographs that chronicle the organization’s colorful history and shines a spotlight on its faculty, students and visiting notables such as Woody Herman and Libby Larsen. While visiting, peruse the back hallways of the 100-year-old Dutton concert barn, which feature photographs that illustrate the ongoing history of Birch Creek. Don’t miss the artwork that adorns the new rehearsal center, which includes original oil paintings, ink drawings, fabric work, posters and photographs.

Miller Art Museum: The Miller Art Museum, given to Door County by Ruth and Gerhard Miller in 1975, is located within the Door County Main Library in Sturgeon Bay. peninsula music festival

60 seasons in Door County

The Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra.

For six decades, the Pen-

insula Music Festival (PMF) has thrilled Door County audiences with world-class artists and performances. It started in 1953, when Thor Johnson raised the baton for the first performance. Johnson had been drawn to Door County to start the festival by a dedicated group of local volunteers, led by Lorenz Heise. For the first two-thirds of its history, the Peninsula Music Festival performed in the Gibraltar High School gymnasium. It was lessthan-ideal. “Everyone remembers the hard chairs, the poor sight lines, the crowded stage and the heat in the old gym,” said violinist Marilyn McDonald, who has performed with the orchestra for more than 35 years. “I can best describe the move to the new auditorium as going from the pony express to the iPad.” What the old gym lacked in amenities, it made up for in accessibility, notes PMF Executive Director

Sharon Grutzmacher, who first saw the orchestra on vacation as a teenager. “In the old gym, the musicians would be wandering around in the hallways. For a young person, there was a real comfort level. At that point, I thought I was going to be a professional musician, so it was a real opportunity to interact with them,” she said. After Johnson passed away in 1975, the festival went through a period of change, finally finding stability in 1985, when Victor Yampolsky was named conductor and music director. The Festival moved to the newly built Door Community Auditorium – connected to the high school where they had performed for so long – in 1991. These changes – along with adding full-time staff – helped to raise the orchestra’s standing. Additional players have been added throughout Yampolsky’s tenure, and numerous high-quality guest artists have been brought in from around the globe. “The orchestra has stayed strong for many reasons: a great group ofmusicians who have known each other for a long time, a wonderful conductor who makes the orchestra play at its very best all the time,” McDonald explained. One guest artist – whose relationship with PMF went back decades – didn’t have to come far, as he owned a home in Door County. John Browning was another vital piece of PMF’s puzzle. The award-winning pianist was a long-time supporter and champion of the festival, performing as a so-

loist multiple times before his death in 2003. If he wasn’t on stage, you could often find Browning in the audience, up in the balcony at the DCA. Often, his beloved dog, Tyler, would be in a travel bag, under the seat. Tyler “traveled with him everywhere, to every rehearsal and concert, remembers horn player David Eliot. “The dog was perfectly trained and never made a peep. One time in rehearsal, something went terribly wrong in the orchestra and Tyler came down and was barking at the top of his voice.

The final, vital pieces of the puzzle for PMF’s long life are the patrons – the audiences that fill the seats each August, the flock of volunteers who work long hours to keep the festival running smoothly, and the donors who have kept the organization on an even keel during the recent tough times. “Just selling a ticket doesn’t pay for it all, said PMF Board president Bruce Mckeefry. “We depend on the generosity of many who can give us money above and beyond the ticket. Our endowment has gone from about $500,000 when I started on the board in 1991 to more than $4 million today. The 2012 festival features soloist Orli Shaham, Anton Nel, and Hilary Hahn, along with a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Ginka Cohn

GINKA & ABE COHN.

Last year,

the Door County community lost one of its most beloved members. Jeanette L. “Ginka” Cohn, who cofounded Fish Creek’s iconic Potter’s Wheel studio and gallery in 1956 with her husband, master potter Abe Cohn, succumbed to lymphoma on May 7, just eight days before her 88th birthday. While her name has become synonymous with the Potter’s Wheel, Ginka’s first calling in life was modern dance. Born on May 15, 1923 and raised in Milwaukee, Ginka moved to New York City as a young woman, where she studied with well-known figures such as Louis Horst, one of the most highly regarded dance composition teachers of the era, and Hanya Holm, one of the “big four” founders of modern dance. She also studied with modern dance/choreography pioneer Jose Limon in Cambridge, Massachusetts, before returning to the Midwest to major in dance at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. After her studies, Ginka taught dance and performed in Milwaukee, where she even had a live exercise program on WTMJTV called “Figure Fun.” Dancing came to a halt when Ginka became sick

by heather steinberger

with polio. Searching for something to do while recuperating, she decided to take up ceramics – and in the fall of 1953, she attended a class with a promising young potter named Abraham Cohn. The couple married in 1954. Two years later, they decided to open a gallery in Door County; they spent two summers in a Fish Creek house before discovering the old apple orchard at 3915 Gibraltar Road. Although there was only one other Door County potter in the late ‘50s, others began arriving within the decade. John Dietrich, who now owns Ellison Bay Pottery with his wife, Diane McNeil, worked with the Cohns for six years. “Abe and Ginka were wonderful,” he told this writer in a 2009 interview. “They were truly interested in other people and helping their careers.” In fact, both Ginka and Abe were instrumental in developing the Door County Potters’ Guild, which took shape in the late 1970s and today boasts eight members. Ellison Bay Pottery is one of the eight. “(Ginka) had distinct ideas about how the potters’ guild should present itself,” McNeil commented recently. “She felt it was important to be professional about the pottery and the business of galleries. She wanted to promote and celebrate the studio potters of Door County. “Her enthusiasm for Abe’s work,

and indeed all the guild potters’ work, was very important to me (and John). She taught us how to see what was quality work so that our standards were raised.” Chad Luberger, owner of Plum Bottom Pottery and a fellow member of the Door County Potter’s Guild, reflected on his own experiences with the couple in a 2009 interview. “Abe and Ginka offered me studio space

when I had just begun my journey in clay,” he said. “Working in their gardens for time in their studio, I was able to get an intimate portrait of the life that these two had created for themselves. “Ginka’s neverending hospitality to the visitors that came through their doors was a constant living example of what I wanted for myself one day,” he added. “The life (they) created has become a symbol for what hard work and never-yielding commitment to your ideals can foster.”

While she was dedicated to Abe, to the gallery and to the guild potters, Ginka also continued to pursue her passion for dance, forming the Peninsula Dance Council and serving as the primary teacher for Peninsula Dance in the 1960s. She also helped the Door Community Auditorium identify professional dance companies to present, and she sponsored their master classes for the community. Ginka continued to teach every summer until just a few years ago. Her classes included “Keep Moving” sessions for older adults. “She was dance here,” McNeil said. “One of her missions was to teach and promote good health and body movement. (That) was a big concern for her.” “She was a huge supporter of the arts and a marvelous dance instructor,” said potter Jeanne Aurelius, who owns Clay Bay Pottery with her husband, David. “I took lessons from her every summer and fall. She loved children; I would always walk my pottery students over from the Peninsula School of Art, and she would give a wonderful, thorough explanation of the work in her gallery. “If there was music playing, sometimes she would break out and dance,” Aurelius continued. “I remember one quiet time at our Potters’ Guild holiday show at the Potter’s Wheel – she turned up the music, and we all danced around the gallery.” It’s that spirit for which Ginka perhaps will be best remembered. “She was full of joy, she was very bright, and she always tried to see the good in whatever was happening,” Aurelius said. “She had a kind, big heart.”

Donations in Ginka Cohn’s memory may be offered to the Peninsula Music Festival, the American Folklore Theatre or the Door County Land Trust.

It would seem fitting

DAVID AURELIUS AT WORK WITH WIFE JEANNE.

that David Aurelius would be sitting in the lobby of Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant in Sister Bay when he happened upon the inspiration for what would become the cover of this 2012 edition of the Door Peninsula Arts Guide. He had no idea the subsequent creation would end up on the guide’s cover. He was just happy to find that nugget of inspiration that would allow him to produce a piece that would fit the Peninsula School of Art’s impending exhibit on Scandinavian myth. Since Aurelius and his wife Jeanne first offered up the idea for a show on creative myth that eventually gained a more narrow focus on Scandinavian mythology, he felt pressed to produce “the best of what I could offer.” The work is entitled “Memory & Thought” and is David’s variation of an antique Norwegian drinking bowl design. But while the inspiration came from a shallow two-handled bowl, David squared off the design and expanded the face in order to provide more surface. “I wanted room to tell a story,” he said. It’s a story, Jeanne explains, that revolves around the Norwegian god Odin and his two ravens Huginn and Muninn. Huginn represented thought and Muninn memory and each day Odin would release them to travel the world to return at the end of the day to tell him what they had seen and heard. “They served as Odin’s eyes and ears,” said Jeanne. David seems satisfied in his quest to produce a piece that could stand up to all those he has produced over the past 40 years and Jeanne, being right at his side, appears equally impressed. But as one sits in their Clay Bay Pottery workshop and browses the adjacent gallery

on Highway 42 between Sister Bay and Ellison Bay, it becomes obvious that David undertook significant challenge as both his and Jeanne’s collection of pottery is nothing short of stunning. Yes, Jeanne’s work is equally fetching as their pieces blend with other potters, some

whose creative juices seemed to flow from a common well. For those who haven’t visited their Web site, it’s worth repeating its introductory paragraph, one that seems to capture the essence of their relationship:

It may have been fate, or perhaps just good luck, that found Jeanne Svien (Aurelius) and David Aurelius seated side by side in a studio art class at Luther College in 1970. When Jeanne leaned over and penned a ’70’s iconic daisy on the knee of David’s jeans, various events were set in motion…”

Most significant of those events were their marriage, two daughters and Clay Bay Pottery, which celebrated its 35th year in operation last year and earned them something akin to pioneer status in the Peninsula’s arts colony. They prefer to rest in

Talent and creativity, something the couple credits to Marguerite Wildenhain, is at the center of their success. But they also credit Door County. “We’ve been fortunate to choose our creativity and Door County has afforded that to us,” said David. “That’s why we’re here.”

the shadow of Abe and Ginka Cohn when it comes to laying clay prints in the county’s soil, but “we pretty much knew all the artists on less than both hands,” said David. “But they were all so welcoming and helpful. We were a young couple that pretty much put a sign out and hoped people would come.”

the world in an ashtray.’” But while the piece of advice has stuck with Jeanne (there aren’t any ashtrays to be found in the gallery), the couple also has drawn from its extensive travels for inspiration. They admit that sometimes they bend the rules in creating a style that is distinctively all their own. There’s actually been one aspect of the couple’s creative life in which the rules may actually have been broken. “We put everything possible into our murals,” said Jeanne, referring to the latest chapter in a career that certainly has touched many lives – even more than all their conventional crafted handmade, hand-painted workshop pieces which can be found throughout the country and beyond. This past year, the couple served as artists-

Well, their families also had something to do with it since Jeanne grew up in Milwaukee and accompanied her parents up to the Peninsula for sailing trips. David is from St. Paul, Minn., but came to Door County on camping trips. “This is where we want to be,” said David. “That’s why there are so many blues and greens in our work. Just look outside. We’ve been influenced by our surroundings.” They’ve also been greatly influenced by Wildenhain, who extended coveted invitations to her northern California retreat to study under one of world’s most renowned ceramic artists. “She influences everything we do,” said Jeanne, who is particularly fond of one of Wildenhain’s instructive comments. “She told me ‘Jeanne you can’t put God and all

in-residence for the 20th large mural. The piece, completed at Southern Door Schools, marked the seventh such tile mural completed at a Door County School. It all began 17 years ago at the urging of former Luther College classmate Sonja Juffer, the art instructor at Lake Bluff School in the Milwaukee suburb of Shorewood. More than 600 students and their parents participated in what Jeanne refers to as a “community quilt as approximately 450 six-inch tiles are ceramicly woven into a colorful montage. Each has its own theme and, like Southern Door’s which was unveiled last June and titled “Opening the Door and Soaring to New Destinations, requires weeks of planning, drawing, clay work and painting. The time is so extensive it often requires that David and Jeanne stay in a nearby motel until the mural is completed. As involved as the projects are, and each admitted the first couple proved nearly overwhelming, the end result has been rewarding and keeps them coming back to the table. “It’s a chance to get out and get my fix, said Jeanne, who has an Arts Education degree from Luther. “We’ve developed friendships through this and it’s neat to touch the lives of these children and the communities. Ironically, this is the first winter since 2001 that David and Jeanne don’t have a mural project on the table. “We’ll get a chance to expand the inventory here at the gallery which will be different, but nice, said David, who already has a pretty good idea of what he will create first. “I knew this cover piece would never sell, but now with it on the cover, I better have a couple of pieces to back it up.

Index - Artists: In this alphabetical guide, you’ll find a comprehensive list of artists cross-referenced to locations where their work can

be seen. What follows the artist’s name is a “locator number.” A number 142 or below identifies the “page” of an ad either of the artist’s work or the location where the art work can be seen, and the map for that location. If that number is 200 or higher, however, you must look at the referenced map to find the location.
