Through the Lens What was your favorite photographic experience of the year? Fires, stand-offs, court cases, following the training process of Charlie the dog, murders, all-city food drive, community events, ambulance rollover, a baseball team who played their hearts out for a coach with cancer... how do you choose? I don’t have a favorite experience, but as I look back, one photo comes to mind: It is the Rosendale man who had locked himself into his home with gas tanks and later died in the incident. I took a photo of all the happenings, from the daughter being talked to by the Sheriff’s Department and being rushed into the local tavern to people comforting her and others in the family, including the dog being rescued. With all the chaos of police, fire, swat you name it... I saw on older man in the window of the tavern (not knowing who he was) weeping with his face buried in his hands, and to the left, a lady also weeping trying to comfort him. It touched my heart. What types of gear do you most like to use and why?
Aileen Andrews Photogragher
We are asked to shoot both photos and video. I like to use the Nikon D3 (with the 200 lens) which is one of three cameras we rotate between the photographers depending which events we are covering. I usually like to photograph from afar rather than close up.

How has the web and online changed or enhanced your approach to photography?
Aileen Andrews photographer
I strive to tell the story through the work I do as a photojournalist. With that said the focus of doing more videos is a challenge, figuring out what we should have more emphasis on: the photograph or video. It is very difficult to do both at the same time. It always depends on the assignment/situation. Sometimes we can incorporate photos into the video. The benefit of the web is that more people see the photos/videos that did not make it into print. Keeping the community informed instead of waiting for print the next day is what the web allows us to do. We live in a fast-pace world with electronics glued to our hands.

chief photographer Q: What was your favorite photographic experience of the year? It may seem mundane, but the challenge and danger involved in getting a shot of the juxtaposition of a wasp sitting on an EpiPen was actually very exciting for me. I had to stake out a warm area where the wasp were congregating, try to lure them in with a dab of syrup, using a macro lens which makes sharp focusing very tough on moving objects. It took over an hour to get the shot, surrounded by wasps mildly agitated by my presence, all while keeping focus on my own EpiPen.
Q: What type of gear do you use and why? I like to use our old work horse, the Nikon D3 camera. It’s getting old and finicky but it’s my favorite. Almost everything you see is shot with either a Nikon 17-35mm f2.8 or a 70-200mm f2.8 lens. I occasionally use off camera strobes but not very often. I do like gadgets, though, like iPhone lenses, GoPro hero cams, anything that can show something that is not normally seen or captured.
Q: How has the web changed or enhanced your approach to photography? The web has made our society so visually literate that images can be viewed and grasped by most people in fractions of a second these days. Just look at how fast commercials are cut. Images grab people for a shorter length of time, meaning I need to make something as detailed in information as I possibly can to convey what is happening, as well as artistically appealing to make them pause to look at it for an extra heart beat.

community
Community means different things to different people.
6
For some, it is the threads that bind us together. In the world of photojournalism, community includes the images that impact our lives; the moments that touch us; the gatherings that create our memories. Capturing those moments is an integral part of journalism. While the red, hot flames of fire and the gunman hunkered down in a standoff
with police often grab the headlines, the photos and stories of community enrich our lives. Community can be as simple as a child lost in the moment, pumping higher and higher on a park swing. Community can be a bicyclist on a tree-shaded path. Community can be a portrait of a man whose job is to serve as a midwife to cows. Community can be the determination and bond formed by those who gather each year to raise money in the fight
against cancer. The people who do “ordinary things, the people who find themselves in extraordinary circumstances. The families simply out enjoying a day at Walleye Weekend, Taste of Fond du Lac or the downtown Fondue Fest – this is Fond du Lac. These are the images that capture that spirit of community. Peggy Breister is editor of The Reporter.

They may be on the eastern shores of Lake Winnebago early in the morning for an ice rescue photo and across the county to Ripon to capture a fire later in the day. The evening may bring an accident south of Waupun or controversy in Mayville.

Wherever news take place that impacts Action Reporter Media readers, Patrick and Aileen are there, at all hours of the day and night, seven days a week, 365 days a year. You may have decided to sleep in and skip the Black Friday sales, but our photographers
are there. Instead of sticking the turkey in the oven on Thanksgiving Day, they are sticking a camera in the faces of the brave souls who weathered the cold and ran in the Festival Foods annual Turkey Trot. They spent a cold day in December creeping around South Main Street as a standoff with an armed gunman stretched into its fifth hour. 2013 had its share of what we like to call “hard” news: crime, fires, crashes, road projects, major events, and even the discovery of a centuries old rifle on the bottom of Lake Winnebago. The photos in this section speak volumes for the topics they depict: The somber salute of an officer at a memorial service honoring
local officers killed in the line of duty. The construction barrels marking the lanes of Fond du Lac’s first roundabout. A house fire in Rosendale that resulted in one man’s death and many questions. The images often depict moments of tragedy. But sometimes the news is uplifting or hopeful, such as the photo of a horse recovering from a dog attack resting its head against its groomer. These are the photos of the mostly unplanned events that made up our lives in 2013. Enjoy! Peggy Breister is editor at Action Reporter Media.

have a keen knack for telling a story by capturing moments in time, once defined by famous photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson as “The Decisive Moment.” And schools are ripe for storytelling through images as seen in Pat’s photo of a mock crash at Mayville High School, or the trombonist marching during Fond du Lac High School’s Homecoming parade. The community was spellbound watching Tibetan Buddhist monks create a mandala over four days at Moraine Park Technical College, only to destroy it in the end to show that “all things are temporary except change.” Photos and video tell the story.

Seasons BY Gary Clausius Action Reporter Media
Area residents saw 2014 slide in with temperatures that were frigid even by Wisconsin’s hardy standards. For a few days, double-digit, subzero temperatures made Fond du Lac and beyond feel more like the Arctic than the Badger State. Behind our foggy breath we may have outwardly cursed Mother Nature for confronting us with such a prolonged deep freeze, but inwardly some actually welcomed the “unseasonal” weather and the challenges it posed. The variety of weather that we experience here is among the things that make the area so special and unique. As old-timers like to remind us, the annual changing of the seasons is how we mark time.
far too long, it does have a particular charm. Think of how out of place Santa Claus looks in the warmweather television commercials that seem to come year after year.
And, like winter – and spring and fall, as well – summer brings with it beautiful sunsets that, to borrow a line from songwriter Don McLean, can make the lovers cry and the poets dream.
The sun casts a spectacular, glaring light upon the snow and ice of Flood’s photographs of the Lakeside Park lighthouse and the road caution sign buried along Fourth Street Road. A similar radiance can be found in the smiles of a pair of tubers sliding down the Buttermilk Creek Park hill captured by Andrews.
The sleepy days of August give way to September and the return of school and football and homecomings. And with them comes autumn and its unique color spectrum.
A long winter is made tolerable by the promise of the spring that we know will ultimately follow it. The first tulip bulbs to push through the ground and new buds on trees signify a rebirth. Prom gowns in April and cherry blossoms in May are as pretty each succeeding year as they were the first time we cast eyes upon them.
The contradiction of our love-hate relationship with winter is illustrated in Andrews’ photo of a woman teeing up a tennis ball to drive with a golf club last January.
Gardens and prairies come alive with color as May turns into June and then July. Summer comes with picnics and festivals that provide the photographers with a spectacular palette and a broad canvas.
Although we gripe and complain that winter lasts
Fall is a season that provides an interesting bridge between the summer and winter. On one hand it is alive with color; on the other, its falling and decaying leaves represent death and the foreboding signs of another winter. And, as we know, with winter comes cold weather and long days to dream again of the seasons to follow. Gary Clausius is The Reporter opinion page editor.

The celebration of Halloween seems to grow each year with more and more decorated yards. Along with the engaging parade of youngsters, it, too, provides the photographers with a fertile field of subjects.

Sports By Mike Hockett Action Reporter Media
I was a three-sport athlete in high school: football, wrestling and track & field. Throughout my four years there, a sports photo of me graced my hometown newspaper twice — during my junior and senior wrestling seasons.
sports
Both were shots of me — back then a heavyweight wrestler — tussling with another kid of equal size. Very sweaty, in a singlet and with a twisted look on my face in both photos, there was nothing aesthetically pleasing about them.
36
But it didn’t matter. They were photos of me in action. Seeing them made me feel so cool, especially since I was victorious in both matches. That’s what’s so interesting about sports photography. The action shots capture the realism of sports. They’re often dirty, physical,
even awkward at times. When it comes to sports action photos, timing is everything. Trying to shoot a player dunking a basketball, a softball player sliding into second base, a swimmer in a freestyle race or a volleyball player winding up for a spike — getting the athlete’s face in the shot is a challenge. The face is what sells the photo. A photographer can be in perfect position for a shot, but it can be ruined by an athlete’s arm in the way or the turning of a head at the last second.
realism of sports: The intensity of basketball players fighting for a rebound or a volleyball player celebrating a big point, the concentration of a pitcher delivering a baseball to home plate or the agony of a season-ending football defeat. Once a week during the sports seasons our photographers get to showcase morecontrolled setting “Senior Spotlight” photos. The accompanying stories let readers see a more personal side of athletes beyond the game.
That’s besides the ever-present challenge of shooting in dimly-lit gymnasiums, hockey rinks or on a cold, rainy football or soccer field.
Being a high school athlete is something these kids get to experience for only a short window. It’s something they’ll never forget. Photos like these won’t let them.
These photos represent the keen ability of Action Reporter Media’s photographers to capture the
