My grandfather was a heck of a guy, and at 6-feet-4 and 260 pounds, he cut an imposing figure. Not one to swear, drink to excess or speak ill of others, he was a proponent of hard work, leading from the front, setting a good example for others and, above all else, not wasting time. I doubt he’d think much of today’s Washington crowd.

self in the parking lot at Copp’s. It’s a lesson I never forgot, and I think of him every time I back up … especially since, invariably, he was right.

He wasn’t rich in a monetary sense, but if wealth were measured in wisdom, patience, kindness and empathy for others, he had to have been a gazillionaire.

My wife tells me I’m prone to use phrases like “just the other day” or “awhile back,” as though no time at all has passed, when in reality months, or even years, have gone over the dam. I can’t help it. To me, that’s the way it feels.

Granddad had a certain economy in his choice of words, but when he did speak, it was worth a listen. His sense of timing was superb. For example, when I was learning to drive, he told me, “Every time you put your car in reverse, there’s always someone behind you.” Keep that in mind the next time you find your-

guidance you need to make educated decisions.

I’ve tried to analyze it and, like Star Trek’s Mister Spock, logic has led me to conclude that the sensation of time is a function of how long you’ve actually lived. My concern today revolves around how fast it now has begun to pass. The older I get, the faster it seems to go. On the cusp of 68, every day in the overall scheme of things is a smaller piece of my lifespan. I’m sure that if I could remember events from the second day of my life, each one would feel like an eternity. After all, at that point the first day represented half of my life. Now each day, season and year flash by in a heartbeat.

to answer your questions and provide the

Lately, I find myself dwelling on the passage of time, and wondering if I’ve optimized my use of it over the years. Granddad might not think so, but somehow I just never was as efficient as he would have been.

no matter how hard I try, my efforts fail, as though I am attempting to halt a runaway train. I tell myself to keep busy, but the busier I am the faster time seems to go. Though I make the effort to keep up with friends’ kids’ activities, just when I could swear that it was only yesterday they left for college, lo and behold they are two years out of school and well into their careers. Where did the time go? How did it pass so quickly? Could it be that I’m really Rip Van Winkle just awakening from a deep sleep? I’ll bet that lately some of you might feel the same way. All I know is that it’s in times like these when I try to make the most of my days. I sometimes wish, however, that Granddad were here to provide a little insight on all of this. If that were the case, my guess is that he’d leave it to me to seek out the answers, since he always believed that experience was the best teacher. Typically, he would ask me, “How many things can you name that you’ve learned from what you did right in life? And, how many things did you learn when you scuffed your knuckles?” I suppose that with a decreasing number of years in which to figure all of this out, I’d better get going. Let’s face it. Forever isn’t as long as I thought it might be. Charles Ratigan lives in Manitowoc.

Simplified Smartphones for Boomers and Seniors Dear Savvy Senior: Are there any smartphones specifically designed for seniors that you know of ? I’m interested in getting one, but at age 69, I want to find one that’s easy to see and use. Semi-Smart Senior Dear Semi-Smart: There are actually several manufacturers who are now making simplified smartphones designed primarily for older users who have limited experience with modern gadgetry. Here’s a rundown of what’s currently and soon-to-be available.

Pantech Flex:

One of the best age-friendly smartphones on the market today is the Pantech Flex (see pantechusa.com/ phones/flex), sold

through AT&T for only $1 with a twoyear contract. This Android-powered touch screen phone has a big, bright 4.3-inch screen, with a fast 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 8-megapixel camera. But what makes this phone ideal for seniors is its Easy Experience option which provides a simple, clean home screen with large fonts, clearly marked icons, and quick access to the phone’s most essential features – your phone, camera, messages, menu, Web, contacts, along with shortcuts to your favorite apps. It also offers convenient extras like voice dialing and voice commands, and SwiftKey technology that predicts the next word you want to type to make texting faster and easier. AT&T mobile share plans for the Pantech Flex start at $85 per month for unlimited talk, text and 1 GB of data.

Jitterbug Touch: Another option to consider is the new Jitterbug Touch offered by GreatCall Wireless, the same company that makes the popular Jitterbug big-button cell phone.

Jim Miller The Touch is a Kyocera Milano smartphone that’s been rebranded and loaded with GreatCall’s simplified user interface. It offers a 3-inch touch screen, and a full slide-out keyboard with raised, backlit buttons that makes it easier to type messages and browse the Internet. And when you turn the phone on, you get a simple menu list with large fonts that let you access often-used features like the phone, camera, messages and pictures, along with your contacts and apps.

introduction in the United States later this year.

This smartphone also offers voice dialing, a 3.2-megapixel camera, and optional features like medication reminders, 5Star personal security service, a live nurse service to answer your health questions, and more.

This device also includes a 5-megapixel camera on the back, which can double as a magnifying glass, and an emergency call button that will dial and text five preprogrammed numbers when pressed. To learn more, visit dorousa. us/experience.

Available at greatcall.com or 800-7336632, the Touch sells for $149 with a one-time $35 activation fee, no-contract, and calling plans that cost $15 per month for 50 minutes, up to $80 per month for unlimited minutes, text messages, operator assistance, and voicemail. And their data plans run between $2.50 per month for 10 MB up to $25/ month for 500 MB.

Doro PhoneEasy: If you don’t mind waiting, the Doro PhoneEasy 740 is another excellent option aimed at seniors who want something in between an easy-to-use cell phone and a more advanced smartphone. Currently available in Europe, it’s scheduled for

The PhoneEasy 740, which is expected to cost around $99, is an Androidpowered slider phone that has a 3.2inch touch screen and a numerical keypad for easy operation. It also offers a simple large-text, clearly labeled menu to frequently used features like the phone, email, messages, Internet, photos, games and apps that you can easily load.

Samsung Galaxy: If a bigger screen

is the most desired feature, you should also consider the Samsung Galaxy Note II (see samsung.com/galaxynoteII). While this phone isn’t designed specifically for seniors, it does offer huge 5.5-inch touch screen display and can be used with a stylus, which makes it easier to see and maneuver. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

AGING AND DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTER By JUDY RANK A Powerful Tools for Caregiving program is set to begin Monday, April 1 at Aurora Medical Center. It will start at 9 a.m. and run until noon for six consecutive Mondays. There are a few more seats available in the program. The Manitowoc Health & Rehabilitation Center and Aurora Medical are hosting the program for the Aging & Disability Resource Center of the Lakeshore (ADRC). This program is for the family caregiver who is caring for a loved one. It teaches the caregiver the importance of taking care of themselves, how to identify the stress that accompanies taking on the added responsibilities, along with tips to ease the stress, and communication skills that can be used with medical providers and family members. The care recipient may attend Generations Adult Center during the six- week class. For more information and to register for the program, contact Lynn at the ADRC at (920) 683-4180 or 1-877-416-7083. Registrations are also being accepted for an evening class that will take place later this spring.

‘Kindle Fire’ The ADRC has had a “Kindle Fire donated to its office and it is now available for the community to

check out and learn how to use. The “Kindle Fire is an electronic handheld device that allows you to read books and play games. There are 24 different books available to be read on it with most of them classics. There are also two games that may be played. They are “Angry Birds and “Barnyard Mahjong. It can be checked out for a period of two weeks with a security deposit.

Volunteer Month April is National Volunteer Month. Whether it is delivering a hot meal to a homebound individual, or volunteering at the hospital or nursing home, or reading with a young child at school, volunteers do it, not for the fame, but to give back and to help their community thrive. For that we are all thankful. It matters not how much you volunteer, but that you do. The ADRC couldn’t help all the people it does without those who volunteer to help at meal sites, or facilitate a prevention program, or volunteer to drive people to medical appointments, or help with Homestead Credit, or Medicare Part D enrollment. We are most grateful for all our volunteers and will always welcome more. We are especially in need of volunteer drivers for the transportation program and individuals to co-facilitate our Stepping On and Living Well programs. Please call the ADRC to volunteer your time.

Senior Fair May is Older Americans Month and once again the long-term care providers in the community are coming together to host a Senior Fair. Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, May 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Manitowoc Ice Center. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) will be doing a presentation on Medicare, along with the Visit us today and learn more about these special services:

The first is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the ADRC office in Manitowoc, 4319 Expo Drive. On Thursday, June 6, the program will be presented at the Two Rivers Senior Center from 1 to 3 p.m. On Tuesday, June 18, the same program will be held at the Kewaunee Human Services office, from 3 to 5 p.m. The Human Service office is located at 810 Lincoln Street in Kewaunee. A fourth program is being planned for the southern portion of Manitowoc County. Please watch the paper for more information as these programs are set up. Registration is requested and can be done by calling the ADRC at 1-877-416-7083.

Stepping On A Stepping On seven-week program is set to start on Wednesday, June 5, from 1 to 3 p.m. Stepping On is a program for those who have had a recent fall or are at risk of falling. A physical therapist is available the first week to teach balance and strength exercises and returns for the second week to be sure everyone is doing the exercises correctly. During the course of the seven weeks, a low vision specialist will be available to share how vision affects balance, a pharmacist shares how medications affect balance and which meds are most likely to do so. Education on good footwear will also be provided along with how to stay safe out in the community. A security deposit is requested and refundable to those for attend all classes. How Work Affects Your

fitness

Social Security Benefits Finance Bruce Bitter is a representative for American Senior Benefits.

Two of my clients, a husband and wife, retired at the beginning of 2012. Both were 65 and had not yet reached their full retirement age of 66. Both began to receive Social Security benefits but the wife wanted to continue working on a part-time basis. The question arose as to how this would affect their Social Security, since the husband was also receiving a pension and the wife was taking systematic withdrawals from her IRA. Here’s how it works. “If you have not reached full retirement age, the Social Security administration will deduct $1 from your benefits for each $2 you earned above $14,640. It is important to note, though, that these benefit reductions are not truly lost. Your benefit will be increased at your full retirement age to account for benefits withheld due to earlier earnings.” (SSA Publication No. 05-10069, ICN 467005, March 2012) This couple wanted to know what is included in “earned income.” The answer given by the Social Security Administration is as follows: “If you work for someone else, only your wages count

toward Social Security’s earnings limits. If you are self-employed, we count only your net earnings from self-employment. We do not count income such as other government benefits, investment earnings, interest, pensions, annuities, and capital gains. However, we do count an employee’s contribution to a pension or retirement plan if the contribution amount is included in the employee’s gross wages.” (SSA Publication No. 05-10069, ICN 467005, March 2012) So in spite of additional income from his pension and her IRA, the only thing they need to count as “earned income” for this purpose is the actual wages she earned from her part-time employment. Once you have reached your full retirement age, you can earn as much as you want and it will not affect the amount you receive in Social Security benefits. Many people in that scenario continue to work, even full-time, and collect their full Social Security benefit.

Contact her at (920) 683-3220 or tricia@riverhillhelps.com In the next stage, Ego Integrity vs. Despair (late adulthood, ages 60 to death) older adults need to look back on life and feel a sense of fulfillment. Success at this stage leads to feelings of wisdom, while failure results in regret, bitterness and despair.

At other times, missed opportunities, failures and unachieved goals leave you feeling regretful. You are experiencing regret when you feel sorry, disappointed or distressed about something that you wish could be different. If these regrets are left unresolved, you become frustrated and sad, which could lead to depression.

Certainly we all miss the mark at times and make decisions that interfere with optimal well-being and cause us disappointment and regret. There are different strategies in resolving regrets, depending on the regret itself.

When you’re depressed you feel sad most of the day, feel tired and have low energy, lose interest in things you used to enjoy, have an increase or decrease in appetite as well as weight loss or weight gain, have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, and may have thoughts about suicide. American Psychologist Erik Erikson (1902-1994) focused his work on creating stages of human development, believing there are psychological needs that every human being strives to meet in order to be well-adjusted and happy. In the stage, Generativity vs. Stagnation (middle adulthood, ages 35-60) adults need to create or nurture things that will outlast them, often by having children (and grandchildren) or creating a positive change that benefits other people, which could be accomplished in a job or volunteering. Success in this stage leads to feelings of usefulness and accomplishment, while failure results in a shying away from the world and becoming uninvolved.

You may be able to do something such as take a class, volunteer or rearrange your schedule to spend more time with loved ones. You may need to reappraise the regret and think differently, believing you made the best decision you could at the time based on the resources, support or level of knowledge you had. Sometimes you need to change the interpretation of the regret and view it differently. It is common for older adults to change their perceptions or goals, or use an internal means to resolve regrets, rather than an external means because of irreversible losses such as death or not having the same resources and energy you would have if you were younger. Regardless of the strategy you use one strategy always needs to be applied: forgive yourself — stop resenting and directing anger toward yourself. Avoid ruminating, repetitively focusing on your negative feelings, which predicts and prolongs depression, and practice self-reflection, focusing on your thoughts and feelings in an effort to solve the problem.

GOING GREY

More women keeping natural hair color as they age By Tara Meissner 50 Plus Correspondent MANITOWOC — They’re gonna’ mix that gray right into their hair. Kathie Risch and Barbara Hill are rethinking the lyrics of the dated Clairol jingle, which had encouraged woman to wash away gray hair.

“They have decided to let their hair color return to its natural color, and at this stage of life Kathie’s is silvery white and Barbara’s is more gray,” Valencia said.

Embracing Gray

After decades of hair coloring, they each have decided to embrace the fading hair color.

Valencia, a stylist for the past 13 years, said in the past three to five years more woman are choosing to embrace their age and the appearance that comes with it.

Karen Valencia, owner of Valencia Salon in Manitowoc, was instrumental in coaching them through the transition and providing a gradual coloring change to achieve a new natural look.

“I see woman with a higher level of confidence in themselves. Some are feeling ready to embrace it, not hide it,” Valencia said. “Some are just tired of going to get it dyed all the time.”

Karen Valencia styles the hair of Kathie Risch of Manitowoc, who decided to no longer dye and go with her natural look. Matthew Apgar/HTR Media

Generally, when women find gray hair in their 30s and 40s they automatically choose to dye it. They are more vigilant about hiding the gray. Once women gain some years, they seem to not care as much about what others think, according to Valencia. “Older woman say, ‘oh, I’m gray, I’m going to embrace it.’ In your 30s you are in a different mindset,” she added. Risch, of Manitowoc, had very dark, almost black hair. She hasn’t seen that color since her late 30s, when it started to come in white, seemingly one strand at a time. “I remember a hair dresser found the first one and pulled it out for me,”

Risch said. “As I found them, I pulled them out. Pretty soon you realize there are too many to pull. You would be half bald if you kept that up.” As they came in more prominently, Risch said she didn’t want to look at them anymore and started dyeing her hair. She had always associated gray hair with getting older.

‘Can’t Be Happening’ “I was shocked and thought this just can’t be happening to me. I got that feeling like I can’t be that old, that I’m getting gray hair,” she said. “I just had to cover it up.” GOING GREY continued on page 8

Hill’s story of the beginning of her natural reddishbrown hair turning is similar. Hill, 64, was also in her 30s when she started to use color. “When it first started, I thought ‘I’m much too young’ and then I just did something about it real soon,” Hill said. “It was expensive. I was making a place for it in my budget, because it was worth it to me. It was important to me once I started doing it.” The Sheboygan resident generally went with a color close to her natural shade, and remembers briefly trying to go blonde. “That didn’t work at all,” she said. According to Hill, it was a hassle to keep up what was becoming a deceptive charade. On the one hand, she considered her age a mark of distinction and always felt natural encouraging her peers to embrace life and think of it as a gift. At the same time, she was hiding her age behind the artificial hair color. Last year, she began thinking of giving gray a go; within six months she was able to confide in Valencia to gain her opinion and gauge her expertise in transitioning from dye to natural. And with the confidence gained from Valencia, Hill started the progression about three months ago. “It was a process,” Hill said. “It was as much psychological as physical. Karen takes care of hair and spirit.” Hill was worried about having stark roots obviously growing until the dyed hair grew out. She recalled seeing a woman with dark hair with a giant sploge of gray; it was a drastic contrast. “I didn’t want to look like that it was so obvious,” Hill said. “Karen has a process … To me it’s like magic, because I don’t understand anything about how to take care of hair.” Risch had similar concerns. When her hair changed it came in snow white. When she was dyeing to the dark shade, the roots would create a stark, skunklike line where the part was. She was dyeing the roots every four weeks. “If I didn’t do that, it was bad,” Risch said. When she rode in a convertible or on a motorcycle, there was white flying in strips all over, she said. When she retired in 2010, she thought it was time to listen to her husband, who had been encouraging her to stop dyeing it. “He just said you are who you are, why are you trying to be someone else. Just let it go and see what it looks like,” Risch said. “He said, you are not 40 GOING GREY continued on page 11

GOING GREY

anymore, be who you are.”

“Kathie’s hair is a pretty white grey. Barbara’s is just as pretty; her gray looks like it is a natural highlight because she has the varying grays. It looks really, really nice,” Valencia said.

Valencia also encouraged Risch and assured her she could accomplish the transition gradually and that there would not be a white stripe that just got wider and wider.

Risch said when she traveled to Mexico for her annual six-week trip, it was shocking for people who hadn’t seen her for a year to see she had gone from dark brown to almost white, but in a good way.

“Over a period of six to eight months, it was to the point where it was mostly white,” Reisch said. “It was painless so to speak.”

“I get a lot of compliments,” Reisch said. “And my husband likes how it looks.”

continued from page 8

Graying Differently According to Valencia, each person grays differently. She works to make the switch not so stark. For Risch, she colored hair with foil and used a shade lighter and each time she would foil it would be a shade lighter. Then, as the hair grew out she’d cut the ends. This worked to soften the transition. Another option for someone with hair like Risch’s would be to continue to color the hair, but keep coloring it lighter. With this option the roots would need to be touched up, and it is more of a two-step process. Because Hill’s hair is a darker gray with natural varying shades of gray, Valencia foiled in the same color that would have been used on her roots. As a result the contrast wasn’t as harsh and it was actually a softer grow-out, she said.

Distinguished Hill’s husband also like’s the new look, and jokes that she is catching up with his white hair. “A couple weeks ago, someone said I looked distinguished with it. When men have gray hair we say it looks distinguished, and hadn’t thought of it for myself,” Hill said. For men, gray hair is a mark of sophistication and a sign of age and wisdom, Risch said. “As a woman we were older, just older,” she added. Hill agrees there is a double standard in the opinions of gray hair for men and women. “That is true about a whole lot of things about how men and women look,” she said. Yet, she points out men who choose to hide their gray often face just as much of an “eyebrow raise” as young women who choose to keep their gray. Valencia says men tend to stay gray more often, but she does wash the gray out of some men’s hair. “It’s more of a blending so the gray isn’t as dominate. They don’t want people to think they are dying their hair,” the stylist said. Men gray around the same age as women, but it seems to be less of a conversation for them. “No one says, oh my god, he’s going gray. We woman might have brought on the stigma on ourselves,” Valencia said. Gray hair is an interesting topic for women. There is a certain amount of vanity that goes with a woman’s hairstyle, Hill said. “We have been fooling people all these years,” she said. “Well, I don’t really think we were fooling anyone.” Tara Meissner is a freelance writer in Manitowoc. Thoughts on Obama Karen Valencia: “I think President Barack Obama looks great with the gray hair. I did look at him without the gray hair and I think he looked hot then.” Barbara Hill: “I think he’s so cute; I just love him anyway he looks. It is almost a badge of honor that he has been working hard and becoming more distinguished. It looks very cool, kinda salt and pepper.” Kathie Risch: “I think he looks older and more troubled. It looks like the weight of the world on his shoulders. Not just his hair, also his face.” I think he looks older. It is distinguished on him. AP photos

For Women When It Comes To Grey By Carol Ryan

Enormous Pressure

Men become “distinguished” as they grey around the temples. It lends them an air of maturity and gravitas. During the 2008 American presidential election campaign, Barack Obama was constantly up against accusations that he was too young and too inexperienced for the country’s highest office.

There has always been enormous pressure on women to be beautiful and attractive - pressure that is piled on long after the bloom of youth has faded. The media constantly churns out images of youthful perfection. There is a billion-euro industry in “hope in a jar” skin creams, cosmetics, hair dye, hold-in knickers and hoist up bras. While women in their 50s and 60s may tire of the endless appointments and enormous expense of having their color done every six weeks, many see no alternative. There is precious little advice out there on how to wear silver in style and the topic gets scant coverage in mainstream fashion and beauty publications.

As the campaign trundled on, media commentators began to notice Obama’s startling transformation from youthful senator to salt-andpepper statesman. So much so that rumors surfaced he was dyeing his hair grey to appear more experienced. Obama himself is on record as saying his new look was an asset in wooing voters.

Women, however, do not get off so lightly. It is more or less taken for granted that a woman will dye her hair from the time her first grey appears.

“The grey is coming quick. By the time I’m sworn in, I will look the part,” he said. Some men are even considered more attractive as they grey - that sexy salt-and-pepper look that makes George Clooney one of the most lusted after men on earth.

Women, however, do not get off so lightly. It is more or less taken for granted that a woman will dye her hair from the time her first grey appears. Even in the political arena, where maturity is considered a key attribute for the job, women are still dedicated to dyeing.

As a result, the majority of women are continually camoflauging their grey hair. But going grey does not entail joining the ranks of the “blue rinse brigade,” all austere crops and sensible flat shoes. There are plenty of options for those who want to go grey and look chic and sexy. For a woman who knows how to carry it off, grey hair can be a powerful symbol of confidence. More and more women are breaking away from beauty conventions, taking grey hair - the ultimate symbol of aging - and making it look very good indeed.

My own mother is toying with the idea of going au natural, inspired by two greyhaired women who stopped her dead in her tracks. The first was a 70 something New Yorker - exquisitely dressed with beautifully cut silver hair caught in a chic ponytail at the nape of the neck. The second was, surprise surprise (!)... an Italian. Again, she had a razor sharp hair cut and had dyed blocks of different shades of silver into her sleek bob. Modern, chic, confident and a million miles from “old”. Beautifully styled grey hair is not something you see every day so when it is done well, the effect can be startling. Hairstyle magazines do not tend to show women with grey, silver or charcoal hair, so silver enthusiasts will have to dig a little deeper for inspiration. Think grey hair can’t look sexy and cutting edge? Visit the website www.goinggraylookinggreat.com and vaporize every stereotype you have held about grey hair. Diana Jewel, author of “Going Gray, Looking Great” started this website because there was no real resource for women who wanted to go grey. She says women who are going through the transition from colored to grey appreciate the support and encouragement of the “silver sisterhood” they find on the site. “There are helpful hints all the way through about transitioning, hairstyles, changing your makeup and wardrobe palette, proper care for gray hair, and more. But equally important is the support that women find on this site.”

Members Gallery The site has a members gallery where women update each other about their transition from colored to grey hair and post photographs of the process. The great thing about this gallery is you can see how grey hair looks in everyday situations on women who have not been styled for hours. Without exception, they look fantastic with silver hair. While celebrities are the last people you might expect to be grey hair role models, this site has a substantial gallery of actresses, singers and prominent businesswomen who are letting their grey hair show through (check out the “Great Inspirations - gray haired celebrities, business leaders and role models” section of the site).

Helen Mirren. Endlessly trotted out as role model for 50-something women, her hair has been both entirely grey and warmed up with honey highlights. Mirren has come into her own with advancing years. When compared to other celebrities who are fighting the aging process, she simply blows them away. She regularly gives women decades younger a good run for their money on the red carpet.

STAY FIT AFTER 50 continued from page 5

heart disease and some cancers. People who are most fit at midlife experience better health and reduce their risk of developing chronic diseases after the age of 65, according to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. At 78 million strong, baby boomers are a generation known for redefining aging. Although boomers are more health conscious, educated and financially secure than previous generations, America”s worsening obesity epidemic has also touched those in this age group and threatens their long-term health and the active lifestyles they embrace. To promote healthy aging, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has launched a new initiative, Fit After 50, to provide baby boomers with practical tips and useful information to help them maintain the motion and mobility needed to engage in regular physical activity and sustain a healthy lifestyle. According to APTA, adults should engage in aerobic and muscle strengthening activities on a weekly basis. This involves at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, or an equivalent combination of the two, each week. Moderate-intensity activities, done for at least 10 minutes each time, may include brisk walking, biking on relatively flat surfaces or general gardening. Muscle-strengthening exercises that work the arms,

shoulders, chest, abdomen, hips, back and legs — the major muscle groups — should be done at least twice per week. In addition, stretching exercises to ensure adequate flexibility are important. For tips and videos about physical therapy for a variety of activities and conditions, visit www.moveforwardpt.com/fitafter50.

How A Physical Therapist Can Help

Physical therapists develop a customized plan of care for each individual — there is no “one size fits all” approach. Through exercises that increase range of motion, strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and endurance, physical therapists greatly improve mobility and motion and can help reduce pain associated with agerelated conditions such as frozen shoulder, osteoarthritis and chronic low back pain. All physical therapists are required to receive a graduate degree — either a master”s degree

“Many people think of going to a physical therapist only after illness or injury,” says APTA President Paul Rockar Jr., PT, DPT, MS. “However, physical therapists are experts in restoring and improving motion in people’s lives. We understand how to help prevent injury from occurring as well as changes in the body that happen with normal aging.
