Imagine being awakened by a phone call in the middle of the night. It’s your crying grandchild, who is asking for money because of an accident. Of course you want to help your loved one, so you do whatever you can in this emergency situation. You open your wallet without hesitation.

50 Plus! is published monthly by the Herald Times Reporter. It also is distributed to select businesses in Manitowoc County.

Unfortunately you’ve just become a victim of a scam that is happening across the country. Known as the “grandparent scam,” this type of fraud involves bogus calls from people claiming to be relatives in trouble. The personal nature and urgency of these calls causes people to let their guard down, and act quickly without verifying the validity of the call. “Criminals often target older people, but in reality anyone of any age can be a target of a scam,” says Phil Hopkins, vice president of global security with Western Union. “With more people sharing personal information online, such as through social media websites, it’s easier for criminals to learn details of personal relationships so they can imitate loved ones by name. Newspapers and obituaries are also good sources of personal information, providing detailed relationship information.” Con artists may also impersonate attorneys,

trouble.

In addition to calling victims, hackers use similar strategies to target victims through email. Tapping into a person’s address book, scammers send emails or instant messages directly from the person’s email account alerting friends and others of the “emergency” and requesting funds. Do not respond to the email and confirm the situation by contacting the person by phone or other means. “Awareness is the best defense against emergency scams,” says Hopkins. “These scams can be convincing, but it’s important to keep a few things in mind before you rush to help.” Hopkins recommends you follow these tips to avoid becoming a victim of the emergency scam or other types of fraud: 1. If you receive a phone call or email claiming a friend or family member needs cash, take a moment to review the situation. Does it make sense? Can you verify the emergency?

3. Let your friend or family member know that you have received a call or email from the person requesting help. If the request turns out to be fake, contact the police immediately. 4. Regardless of whether you are contacted by phone, email or some other means, be suspicious of requests to send money to “help a friend or family member out” unless you can verify the information you’ve been given with 100 percent confidence. 5. If you did send a money transfer through Western Union, and then realize that it was for a scam, contact the Western Union Fraud Hotline at 1-800-448-1492. If the transaction has not been picked up, it will be refunded to you. 6. Never send money to someone you have not met in person. 7. How to Choose the Right Executor for Your Will Dear Savvy Senior: What are my options for choosing an executor for my will? I was considering asking one of my kids to do it but I don’t think any of them are up for the job. What can you tell me? Still Kicking Dear Kicking: Choosing an executor – the person or institution you put in charge of administering your estate and carrying out your final wishes – is one of the most important decisions in preparing a will. Picking the right executor can help ensure the prompt, accurate distribution of your possessions with a minimum of family friction. Some of the duties required include: • Filing court papers to start the probate process (this is generally required by law to determine the will’s validity). • Taking an inventory of everything in the estate. • Using your estate’s funds to pay bills, including taxes, funeral costs, etc. • Handling details like terminating cred-

it cards, and notifying banks and government agencies like Social Security and the post office of the death. • Preparing and filing final income tax returns. • Distributing assets to the beneficiaries named in the will. Given all the responsibility, the ideal candidate should be someone who is honest, dependable, well organized, good with paperwork and vigilant about meeting deadlines.

Who To Choose Most people think first of naming a family member, especially a spouse or child, as executor. If, however, you don’t have an obvious family member to choose, you may want to ask a trusted friend, but be sure to choose someone in good health or younger than you who will likely be around after you’re gone. Also, if your executor of choice happens to live in another state, you’ll need to check your state’s law to see if it imposes any special requirements. Some states require an out-of-state executor to be a family member or a beneficiary,

The entire staff was professional, encouraging and friendly during my rehab sessions. My wife was able to join me for my meals and visitors were warmly welcomed. ADRC: Transportation changes forthcoming By Judy Rank In early July, current ForwardHealth members who are enrolled in either Wisconsin Medicaid or BadgerCare Plus programs will receive a letter from the Department of Health Services regarding a change in management of the state’s non-emergency medical transportation services. In February, LogistiCare informed the Department of Health Services that it would like to be released from its contract with the state to provide transportation to medical appointments for Medicaid and BadgerCare Plus programs. As a result, the state issued a request for proposals and has awarded a contract to MTM Inc. to provide this service effective Aug. 1. Members will continue to call the current LogistiCare phone number. Beginning July 1, anyone requesting a ride to a medical appointment will hear a prompt that asks whether the ride is requested before Aug. 1 or after Aug. 1.

For rides requested before Aug. 1, the call will be routed to LogistiCare. For rides needed on or after that date, the call will be routed to MTM. After Aug. 1, the call will go directly to MTM.

Retirement Toolkit The Department of Labor, the Social Security Administration, and the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services has put out a Retirement Toolkit. It includes a list of publications and interactive tools to help in planning for retirement, plus information on how to contact any of the three agencies with specific questions. It includes a timeline beginning at age 50 on up to 70 ½ with information that is helpful in setting a retirement date at each age segment. The toolkit can be accessed online at: www.dol.gov/ebsa/pdf.retirementtoolkit.pdf.

Fraud Training The Wisconsin Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) will be offering a free training

session to individuals interesting in helping prevent Medicare fraud in their community, on Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Generations in Plymouth. For more information or to register, contact Kevin Brown at the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups at 1-800-488-2596 or kbrown@ cwag.org

Ombudsmen The Department of Health Services, Bureau of Long Term Care is looking to recruit volunteer ombudsmen to work with residents and their family members by providing support and empowerment to residents of long-term care facilities. Volunteers are thoroughly screened and undergo a criminal background check at the cost of the agency prior to attending the mandatory initial seven-hour training, along with periodic in-services. Volunteers are required to commit to six months of service after training and make unannounced visits to designated long-term care facilities on a weekly basis.

To learn more about the program, additional information can be obtained by visiting the website: longtermcare. wi.gov. Kim Verstegen is the volunteer coordinator for this region. Interested individuals may register with her by calling 1-800-815-0015 or emailing Kim.Verstegen@wisconsin.gov.

Prepare For Weather This is the time of the year when unexpected weather conditions can cause tornados, power outages, thunderstorms and flooding. High temperatures and humidity, especially for a prolonged period can also be dangerous. Now is the time to think about what could happen and prepare a plan if any of these conditions arise in the community. For those without air conditioning, develop a plan of getting to places that are air conditioned each day, along with pulling shades to keep your home as cool as possible. For those who feel they may need assistance if evacuation would become nec-

Also keep in mind that if the person you choose needs help settling your estate they can always call on an expert like an attorney or tax account to guide them through the process, with your estate picking up the cost.

If, however, you don’t have a friend or relative you feel comfortable with, you could name a third party executor like a bank, trust company or a professional who has experience dealing with estates. If you need help locating a pro, the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils (naepc.org) and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (naela.org) are great resources that provide directories on their websites to help you find someone.

Whoever you choose to serve as your executor, be sure you get their approval first before naming him or her in your will. And once you’ve made your choice, go over your financial details in your will with that person, and let him or her know where you keep all your important documents and financial information. This will make it easier on them after you’re gone. By Tara Meissner 50 Plus Correspondent MISHICOT — Cancer found Olive Cretton’s breast 11 years ago. Seven years later, it attacked her uterus. Both times, the cancer was found in its early stages, and Cretton approached the treatments with a matter-of-fact attitude. “It is something you have to go through, so you have to make up your mind. This is what you have to go through with it,” she said. “I had a lot of faith and hope. I believed I would get through it and I did.”

Survivor

The two-time cancer survivor believes many prayers were answered. “The good Lord up above was with me. I thank God every day for my family and pray He keeps them in good health,” she said. The breast cancer was discovered during a routine mammogram at the Two Rivers Clinic. The doctor said he didn’t like what he saw and ordered another mammogram. The results from the second test also showed a suspicious mass, which was confirmed as cancer with a biopsy. “It was a shock,” she said. Treatment for the breast cancer was a lumpectomy and lymph node removal, which was followed up with radiation. There was no need for chemotherapy at that time. Cretton healed well from the surgery and followed the medical advice to exercise the arm to prevent stiffness and loss of range of motion. Coincidently, her husband, Norbert (Nubbie), was fixing the roof that weekend, and she tossed the used shingles in a dumpster. At the follow-up visit when the doctor asked her to lift her arm, she raised it right up. About six months after diagnosis, Cretton was feeling better, but the disease robbed her of some of her pep, she said.

Mishicot Woman Overcomes Breast, Ovarian Cancers The doctor wanted her on the drug for the full five years; during that time Cretton was reading about the link to ovarian cancer with the use of that drug.

A doctor placed Cretton on Tamoxifan for five years after the cancer treatments; Cretton believes the prolonged use of that medication played a hand in her developing uterine cancer years later.

After noticing a bloody discharge, four years ago, Cretton was diagnosed with uterine cancer.

“I kept saying, are you sure I have to be on this,” she said.

Different Treatment

6 . July 2013 . 50 plus!

“So no more babies,” the 77-year-old joked. Treatment this time was a bit different

and needed to include chemotherapy. The first step was a complete hysterectomy to rid the body of the cancer and organs affected by it. This was performed by two Milwaukee-based physicians. She elected to have robotic surgery, which was completed through five halfinch incisions in her midsection. Cretton hadn’t heard of robotic surgery before agreeing to have the procedure. She wanted to be sure it was reliable and was comforted when she heard

Olive Cretton tends to a flower basket outside her Mishicot home. She has survived two cancers. Her friends and family will participate in the Relay for Life event, hosted by the American Cancer Society, at Two Rivers High School in July. Sue Pischke/50 Plus one of the Milwaukee doctors had preformed it more than 500 times. “It is unbelievable what they can do nowadays,” she said.

More Positive

“No pain!” she said.

“You live it,” she said. “You look forward to things more and are more positive on things.”

Following the surgery, Cretton was not disappointed to forgo vacuuming for six weeks or abstain from lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk. Other than those restrictions, she was free to resume normal activities.

Cretton likes to garden. She has a ladies’ sheepshead group that meets on Wednesdays playing call your ace for 10-20-30 cents. She also plays jack of diamonds partner with her family and Tripoli with her kids and grandkids.

However, she had to undergo chemotherapy this time. Chemo was administered every three weeks for four months. The chemo was on a Thursday, and Cretton would feel good on Friday and then become ill during the weekends.

Cretton doesn’t participate in Relay for Life — it is too much walking for her. Instead, her family walks and she and Nubbie support the American Cancer Society with regular donations. They also have attended the garden party for survivors sponsored by Aurora Health Care.

Family Support She lost her hair during chemo, but it came back a “beautiful gray!” Her daughter, Lynn, a breast cancer survivor and a speaker at last year’s Relay for Life event in Two Rivers, also lost her originally blond hair and it came back black. During chemo treatments, which last up to five hours, her daughters, Ann and Lynn, would come and sit with her. The first time, Cretton became quite ill and slept for much of it. After that, she was in relative comfort, covered in warm blankets, conversing with her daughters or watching the TV, and sometimes opening the curtain around her chair to converse with other patients. “Cancer puts you out a little bit, but I

Listen up ladies, there’s a sexual paradox. Just as you’re getting older and when — for some — sex may not be a priority, that is exactly when you need it most. Indeed, a study released this May suggests as many as six in 10 women — ages 55 to 65 — avoid sexual intimacy. Yet, sexual activity is good for a woman’s health — especially if she is entering into any of the menopausal phases of life — peri-menopause, menopause or post-menopause. “Sexual stimulation releases hormones that positively affect a woman’s overall health and well-being and keeps her vagina youthful,” says Dr. Mary Jane Minkin,Ob/Gyn and author of ”The Yale Guide to Women’s Reproductive Health.” “The vagina,

According to Dr. Minkin, the benefits of healthy sex are manifold, ranging from stress reduction and improved mood to protection of a woman’s reproductive and pelvic health. Some proof points: a study in “Biological Psychology” shows the rush of hormones released from sex boosts mood, fosters feelings of closeness and helps manage stress for days.
