Thank you to Cortney Larson, of Creative Concepts by Cortney, and Heather Marx, of Wild Root Salon, for providing photography and hair and makeup services.

We’ve all had those mornings when hitting the snooze button repeatedly is a more desirable option than actually getting out of bed. It happens. But I have a feeling that for the individuals featured in our fourth annual A-List, it happens pretty infrequently. I’m sure they would attest that it’s easier to bound out of bed in the morning when your work is also your passion. I had the opportunity to meet many of our A-Listers over the course of a two-day photo shoot. What surprised me was how incredibly different each individual and group were from one another – and not just in industry. Some couldn’t wait to strike a pose for our photographer while others were more reserved. Some came dressed in suits and ties while others came in their work day uniform of jeans and polo shirts. Living in a community where success can be defined in such diverse ways is encouraging because it means we all have a shot at it. Offering new travel solutions to local residents? That’s success. Building a family’s dream home? Success. Inspiring self-confidence by giving someone a killer makeover? That’s success too. This group of professionals proves that there’s no magic formula for success, but rather hundreds of paths that can get you there. Despite their differences, this year’s crop of A-Listers share an important commonality: each one is incredibly passionate about what they do for a living. If there is any consistent quality of those who rise to the top, enduring passion seems to be it. As you read their stories, I hope you feel inspired to achieve whatever success means to you.

Northeast Wisconsin Technical College Associate Dean, Business and Information Technology

Each and every day, Julie Ebben-Matzke is a part of the exciting journey that adult learners take when they change their lives by furthering their education. As associate dean of business and information technology, Ebben-Matzke says it’s amazing to watch them not only obtain new knowledge and skills, but also gain the self-confidence that comes with furthering one’s education. “I spent 20-plus years in business in the information technology field while teaching for the college part-time, before accepting my current position as associate dean at the college,” she explains. “Once you have witnessed the commitment and passion our students bring to the classroom while trying to balance everything else, it is impossible to not want to be a part of that excitement and inspiration on a daily basis. When I started in this business, I never thought adult education and our learners would take ahold of my heart like they did.” Ebben-Matzke looks to her husband, who has lived with multiple sclerosis for the past 22 years, and her parents as her source of energy and ambition. “My parents instilled in me a strong belief in education and lifelong learning,” she says. “They always reinforced the thought that one’s education is something that no one can ever take away from you. It is this same determination I see in my husband and parents that I see in our students on a daily basis. Whatever challenges our students are facing in their lives, they still have the fortitude to overcome those obstacles to succeed in the classroom.” The role Ebben-Matzke serves for students at NWTC cannot be fulfilled by her alone. She credits an incredibly talented, dedicated, caring staff and faculty for their commitment to improving and growing the workforce. “My team includes 26 full-time faculty along with several part-time instructors who are very experienced and knowledgeable in their field of expertise,” she says. “Being very new in my current position, it is crucial to my effectiveness to draw on the knowledge and experience of the very talented people I am surrounded by.” Ebben-Matzke says she looks forward to the exciting challenges that come along with ensuring her team is providing students with the skills needed to obtain a job in the workforce. “The needs of employers will continue to evolve and it is our responsibil-

4

ity to continue to change, grow and develop our offerings to meet the needs of these employers. We are constantly partnering with many different entities in our large district (K12, businesses, other colleges) to ensure we are delivering the needed products and services while being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. “The most important thing I have learned is that encouragement, a positive message and caring can go a long way with students,” she continues, “whether they’re just out of high school or returning to school for the first time since graduating from high school many years ago.”

wall street NEW Bernie Van Eperen and Chris Battle Owners

Brooke Krysiak Operations Manager

Founded in 2012, NEW Wall Street came to fruition as a result of the work started by Chris Battle and Bernie Van Eperen, who desired to open an investment firm that met their clients’ advanced needs with more personalized attention. By sharpening their focus and downsizing their “book of business,” they maintained a few select relationships to develop meaningful connections. “We treat every client as family and keep our advisor-to-client ratio small in order to provide the best service possible,” explains Van Eperen. “We never thought there would be so much demand in the Green Bay area for the kind of investment needs that are usually found in a big city.” “We strive to exceed client expectations and set a goal to do more for our clients than they received with their previous advisors,’” adds Battle, who joined the financial industry in 2001. That’s also the year that

Van Eperen got his start in the financial industry. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER ™ and was previously an Enrolled Agent for the IRS. Both Van Eperen and Battle hold life, health, and variable annuity licenses in multiple states and a FINRA General Securities Registration. This registration allows them to utlize all investment products with the exception of commodities and futures. Battle has 20 years of management experience at three Fortune 500 companies and is also a Registered Principal. His experience has helped him bring insight amd success to the company – and their clients – in this economy. In every business there are challenges, and NEW Wall Street is no different. Thankfully, Van Eperen and Battle can rely on each other, and operations manager Brooke Krysiak, to weather the difficulties. Together they have developed a unique approach to their investment philopsophy that they use with their clients, including a tactical exit strategy that they utilize when the stock markets turn bearish. “We each bring different views to the table, which allows us to get through most of our

8

challenges,” says Van Eperen. “If not, we have an arsenal of industry professionals that we can talk to at any time to get answers for our clients.” When they aren’t in the office, they’re taking care of their families and enjoying all that northeastern Wisconsin has to offer. Battle and his wife Melissa live in De Pere with their three children, while Van Eperen lives in Wrightstown with his wife Laurel and their three children. Krysiak, who also holds life, health and variable annuity insurance licences in addition to the FINRA General Securities Registration, graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in May 2012. Every day, the trio says the one thing they look forward to most is interacting with clients. Often, it’s paid back in the form of one simple sentence, explains Battle. “The best thing a customer has said is, ‘What took you so long to start this company?’” Securities and advisory services offered through SII Investments, Inc., member FINRA/SIPC and a Registered Investment Advisor. showcase kitchens, inc. Showcase Kitchens owners Todd Anderson and Scott Karbon say they never thought their business would evolve into the industry leader it has become. The company, which designs, builds and installs custom furniture pieces, cabinets and countertops, has been in business for more than two decades. Through dedication to their customers and progressive insight, the company has moved forward even during the recession. “We work with some of the most respected homebuilders from the tip of Door County to Milwaukee daily,” explains Karbon, vice president. “We have customers who come to us and come back to us because of our designs, quality and service. We have created some awe-inspiring projects I never could have dreamed of upon entering this

industry over 25 years ago.” Karbon says their current cabinet lines will meet any need, from refacing your existing cabinets, to remodeling, to new cabinets for your new home – whether it’s your first home or your dream retirement home. They also serve commercial cabinetry needs. “We have done some very fun projects recently,” says Karbon, “like the Children’s Museum and the booths in Hagemeister Park in downtown Green Bay. You will even see our work in some well-known retail stores throughout the country.” While the quality of Showcase Kitchens’ products speaks for itself, Karbon says that the company’s biggest asset is its employees. “We really have assembled the best our industry offers. They impress me every day,” he says.

Though the recession forced the downsizing and closure of many businesses in the industry, Showcase Kitchens took a unique – and what proved to be successful – approach to weathering the down economy. “During the recession we added and upgraded machinery and added staff not normally available,” Karbon states. “While some competitors were leaving our industry, we were preparing to handle an increased market share when things turned. Thankfully, it worked and we are currently manufacturing round the clock most days of the week.” The team at Showcase Kitchens works very hard to ensure customers know they’re appreciated and their needs are respected. “Staying on the cutting edge, we don’t stand still for long,” says Karbon. “We are always improving what we do and how we do it.”

There is no sleep for the weary, so says the team at Landmark Real Estate and Development and Coach Homes. They work like a well-oiled machine 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to ensure your new home is a welcoming place to put down roots. Keith Garot, broker-owner of Landmark, has 29 years of real estate experience. The Green Bay native began his real estate career as a salesperson and eventually worked his way into investment, land developing and building. Since then, he has successfully developed more than 120 residential neighborhoods, six condominium developments and approximately 1,200 apartment units in the Fox River Valley and northeast Wisconsin over the past 18 years. “Your construction project isn’t about us, it’s about you and your needs,” says Garot. “It’s about bringing your vision to life; that vision has inspired us to take the art and science of construction to a new level. We believe better tools and techniques lead to better outcomes. That’s why ingenuity has always been the cornerstone upon which we build. “By employing state-of-the-art tools to our work, we’re able to anticipate obstacles and optimize productivity, which means a better building experience and better buildings for you,” he adds. Garot and his team, which includes Venessa Willis, Michelle Van Dreel and Christine Barlament, have been steadfast in their dedication to their clients. This mentality has helped them survive a volatile economy and as a result, they have built and sold over 200-plus homes from 2009 to 2013. “Our team is currently undertaking two fall showcases, 39 custom homes, 7 spec homes, 8 unit townhomes, and condominiums in Sister Bay, Wis.,” Garot explains. “We take pride in all of our developments, truly creating neighborhoods people call home.” Garot – who is an active member of the NEW Realtors Association, Valley Home Builders Association, Brown County Home Builders Association, and Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce – says that his team helps new homebuyers’ dreams take shape. “All new homebuyers are excited to see their home being built,” he states. “A great home is not defined by square footage, but whether it fulfills the expectation and needs.”

Matt Gerhard Construction | Owner

If you are looking for a homebuilder with a dedication to remarkable quality, innovative design, attention to detail and whose mission is to provide you with long-term value, you don’t need to look any further than M. Gerhard Construction, owned by Matt Gerhard. Gerhard and his team of skilled craftsmen have created some of the most remarkable new homes in the Green Bay area. From groundbreaking designs and unparalleled artistry to hands-on service with attention to detail throughout the building process, M. Gerhard Construction makes building your new home an enjoyable and satisfying endeavor. “All homebuilders are far from equal,” Gerhard explains. “When you experience a home built by my team, the difference is clear. It has beautiful curb appeal, stunning woodwork, extreme attention to detail and we offer unbeatable personal service during the entire process. “This business is not as easy as it looks,” Gerhard continues. “A lot of people who attempt to build their home on their own are blown away when they realize how much work it truly is. You need years of on-site workmanship in order to build the best home possible while not overlooking a single detail.” Gerhard is driven by the excitement of seeing a home come to fruition. From a small seed of an

14

idea, it morphs into something much greater for his clients. Each day, Gerhard looks forward to coming up with new ideas that haven’t been done by other builders. As a skilled finish carpenter, he personally designs and crafts all the exquisite woodwork in each of his homes and provides continual hands-on oversight as he works with his team of trusted subcontractors. He knows the building industry and chooses partners who share his desire to exceed expectations in every area of a new home or remodeling project. “The most important thing I have learned is that this is the customer’s dream,” Gerhard says. “It’s not the quantity of homes I build, it is the quality of homes I build.” While a home may physically be created from wood, paint, cement and other material goods, Gerhard finds equal importance in constructing a location for a lifetime of memories. Holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and even quiet nights at home – they all have a place to unfold once Gerhard transforms people’s dreams into reality. “Most people only build once, and I want every homeowner to have the best possible experience I can give him or her,” he says. “That is how I have built a business solely on referrals. And that’s the best compliment I can get.”

“As time passes – more quickly than it should, it seems – photographs become pieces of our collective history that ensure important times are never forgotten. Memories are fleeting, but thankfully, photographs are forever,” says Cortney Larson, owner and photographer at Creative Concepts by Cortney in De Pere. “Photographs are so much more important than we realize,” she explains. “When I started in this business, I never thought I would have been so blessed to have touched so many people’s lives and in so many different stages of their life. “Sadly, I have had clients pass away since taking their portraits,” she continues. “I realize how fortunate I am to have captured their last photograph – that last photograph that will ever be taken, the last photograph that will be passed down from generation to generation, that last photograph that will keep their spirit alive forever.” Cortney says that she is motivated and inspired to keep producing meaningful work by seeing firsthand the ways her photography enhances her clients’ lives. “My inspiration comes from making my clients happy,” she reflects. “I believe that photos are timeless and should reflect the essence of the moment because we will never get that moment back. I love when a bride tells me that the photograph I took shows everything she was feeling on the most important day of her life or when a high school senior cries in my studio because she thought she was ugly until she saw the portraits I took of her looking so beautiful.” Cortney balances a demanding but enjoyable work schedule with time spent raising her family. “Every day I look forward to spending time with my three beautiful children – when they want to spend time with me, that is! Zack is 16 years old and a junior at West De Pere High School, Evie is 12 years old and a seventh grader at West De Pere Middle School and Cameron is 1 year old and walking and talking like crazy. I love to go up north to the family cottage whenever possible – although it can get quite cramped with Grandma and Grandpa, four siblings, their spouses, and the 13 nieces and nephews.” Cortney works hard to achieve the optimal career and family balance, and says the Green Bay area is the perfect place to do so. “There are so many truly genuine people who live here. It makes Green Bay a very comforting place to raise a family,” she says. Though a hectic life can throw Cortney a curveball or two, she takes away an important lesson from her clients during every appointment. “The most important thing I have learned from my customers is to just have fun,” she says. “Not many people enjoy having their portraits taken, so I try to make it as fun, relaxing and stressfree as possible.”

Inspired by working with like-minded craftspeople to create spaces their clients can’t wait to go home to, Patty Radue, designer at Radue Homes, Inc. in Denmark, says she loves putting an entire look together for a house. “I never thought we would have the opportunity to build so many beautiful homes,” she furthers. “We believe our calling is to listen, mix clients’ desires with our own vision, and give them back spaces that reflect the best versions of themselves. “It makes my day when a customer says that I helped make the entire process so much easier than they thought it would be,” she adds. When Radue Homes President Stephen Radue looks back on his years in the business, he says he never thought they would grow to this point. Their philosophy at Radue Homes, he explains, is to offer uniquely designed and finely crafted homes at an exceptional value. “We take great care to build homes that are timeless in appeal to ensure that one of your very largest investments is also your most treasured,” he states. “Our in-house design center is pivotal in giving our customers the very best value with the least amount of stress. We have strived to build a solid reputation by providing extraordinary designs that work for you and your family’s way of living, design assistance to create an interior and exterior

that stands the test of time, and great customer service.” Julie Radue, who does the bookkeeping and estimating for the family owned business, says her dedication to the industry comes from having lived in over 20 houses while growing up. “My family moved a lot and I learned there is more than one way to design a home. I look forward each day to helping a customer start on their own journey.” Every day is different at Radue Homes, she adds, and what the Radue family enjoys most (and is best at) is building amazing homes their clients can be proud of. “We are truly a family owned business,” she says, “working hard to turn houses into homes for families.”

michael heisman MetJet, Inc. | Founder & CEO

It may have been just a 700-page business plan in 2011, but two years later MetJet of Green Bay is now adding a fourth and fifth flight destination out of Austin Straubel Airport. “The MetJet business plan was started in 2003, and fine-tuned over a number of years,” explains Founder and CEO Michael Heisman. “As a startup, we could not obtain financing from the SBA or a traditional bank either. So, MetJet issued shares within the state of Wisconsin and is now owned by approximately 425 local investors, business owners and families. We also reinvest as much money back into the local economy as we can, with the exception of the plane we charter – Green Bay did not have a Boeing 737 sitting around.” Heisman says he enjoys the challenge of building a strong business, and proving wrong all of the people who said MetJet would never happen. “I never thought the community would adopt a new business as much as we have been adopted,” he reflects. “We have carried over 20,000 people from northeast Wisconsin to Florida. This area is hungry for affordable, quality and

20

nonstop air service, and we want to provide as much as we can. As such, we are always open to feedback on how we can make things better.” Heisman says he has a passion for coming up with new ideas and learning new things. On days when challenges present themselves, he knows his friends, investors and mentors will be there to support him. “I have been very lucky to meet and maintain relationships with people who are far more intelligent and saavy than I am,” he explains. “We have created a very fun company that our employees, passengers and partners seem to enjoy.” Heisman says his favorite thing about living and doing business in the Green Bay area is the people – and he knows he has a duty to them. “I have lived in over 15 cities, and the people here are amazing,” says Heisman. “The most important thing I have learned from them is they value a company that actually listens to their feedback, and if we don’t take care of them, they will put us out of business.”

LeMense quality homes, inc. Mark LeMense, owner of LeMense Quality Homes, began his career by way of the cabinetry business. When he decided to build his own home, LeMense anticipated enjoying the process, but never imagined where it would lead. “After my home was finished I started building a few spec homes and now I am building 90 percent custom homes,” he explains. As a hands-on craftsman, LeMense oversees every aspect of each construction project to ensure his client’s needs, and budget, are being met. “We place quality workmanship into our homes. We do all our own carpentry and trim work, which allows us to have greater control over the finer details,” he says. Supreme attention to detail is just one way in which LeMense sets his business apart. Some builders give projects with bigger price tags more attention, but for LeMense, each project is treated the same regardless of its square footage. LeMense says a home is one of the biggest investments a person can make and he is determined to ensure that it is a sound one. “The homes I build for people are going to be their investment for a long time, no matter what size they are,” he adds. “I want to make sure that no corners are cut and that my clients get a great home they are happy with.” LeMense states that his clients get his complete attention and always have a direct line to him to ensure they’re happy, that the house is finished on time, and that their expectations are met. “We are here 100 percent from the start of the plans, to the interior designer to make sure my clients get the home they were dreaming of, to customer service for the next several years,” he promises. “From the initial meeting to the final walk-through and beyond – I am always available to answer any questions you may have. Regardless of the size or value of the home, quality never takes a backseat.” One of the most rewarding moments that LeMense had recently was when some first-time homeowners told him that he helped make the home building process an amazing and easy experience. “They told me their journey to their ‘beautiful home’ was enjoyable and the results were stunning. Every day I look forward to new challenges on and off the job site,” he adds, “and it makes my day when a customer says their home looks amazing.”

robert j. domol When accidents occur, pain and suffering may not be the only burden an injured person faces. There may be a mountain of unpaid medical bills coupled with the inability to earn a steady income. That’s where Robert Domol of Domol Law Offices comes in. “I work with people who have suffered unfortunate losses due to no fault of their own. I find it rewarding to help clients put their lives back together,” says Domol. “My practice purposely does not take on a high volume of cases. This ensures that I personally handle a case from start to finish while giving my clients the attention they deserve.” Domol Law Offices has handled many serious cases that have resulted in recoveries exceeding one million dollars in the areas of motor vehicle negligence, construction negligence, product liability, premises liability and medical malpractice. Domol has also been selected for inclusion in Illinois Super Lawyers¬–Rising Stars Editions 2012 and 2013, a distinction given to just 2.5% of all attorneys in the state. Domol recently moved to the Green Bay area after practicing in Chicago for nearly a decade. “I really appreciate how friendly and welcoming everyone is here,” he says. “The pace of life and the family-first priorities make it a great place to live. My wife, Krista Seidl, grew up in De Pere, so when we recently had our first child, Evie, we knew this area would be the perfect place to raise her. I’m eager to continue building my practice in my new hometown.”

scott johnson

In a refreshing take on the dayto-day business in the publishing industry, Scott Johnson, president and publisher of Press-Gazette Media, says that he starts each day with the intention of making a difference in someone’s life, whether it is an employee, his family or a customer. “My faith compels me to be the best that I can be; my family grounds me and being a good example for my kids drives me; and I believe you need to have some fun in the workplace,” explains Johnson. “You spend too much of your life at work to not enjoy it. We have a good team here in Green Bay and I want us to be able to have some fun along our journey together.”

Johnson, who took the helm earlier this spring, says that a strong team ensures success through the many changes in the industry. “Back when I started as an ad salesperson, we sold print ads and inserts,” he states. “Now we can offer social media, paid search, email blasts, website development, digital display, niche publications and we still have a strong print and insert presence. People read us in print, on laptops, mobile phones, tablets and via social media – whatever way they want.” Johnson says that no other media company in the market has the footprint and reach of Press-Gazette Media, even as the company transitions with the times. “The unique, local-driven content we provide and the multimedia marketing solutions we offer are as valued as they have ever been,” he states. “Every day offers new opportunities. New opportunities to meet new people, make a difference with customers whether readers or advertisers, and the opportunity to learn something new.” It’s important to Johnson that he and his team take those opportunities to propel the business – and its impact on the community – forward. “It could be we made a difference and helped a client’s business grow,” he adds. “It could be from a reader who benefited from a story, or it could be because we raised awareness in the community on a certain issue through a story or sponsorship. I feel inspired when I hear that our business makes an important difference in our community every day.”

heather marx Wild Root Salon | Hair Stylist

Heather Marx’s special attention to detail and her drive to help others look and feel their absolute best are great assets to those in need of new haircut – or even a total makeover – in the Green Bay area. As a hair stylist at Wild Root Salon in De Pere, Heather says she feels great when a client looks in the mirror and smiles because of the work she’s done. “I like to take a look at all aspects of a client to create a style that will suit their lifestyle and personality,” she explains. “I take a more natural approach when working with specific hair textures and colors to create a style that will grow out nicely and enhance their best features.” Wild Root is a new location for Heather, and she says she couldn’t be more excited or inspired to create her best work on a daily basis. “Wild Root is an old historical home converted into a salon, conveniently located in De Pere,” she says. “The atmosphere is very inviting with a cozy waiting area and two stylists per room for a more intimate experience. The services I offer include men’s and women’s haircuts, hair coloring, facial waxing, hair extensions, straightening treatments, makeup applications and special occasion styles. I also do some on-location makeup and styles

for various photographers, fashion shows and special events.” Heather credits a group of talented educators and colleagues in the beauty industry for helping keep her motivated and encouraged. “I’m very fortunate to have received an excellent education after cosmetology school,” she explains. “I’ve learned precision cutting and coloring techniques from top stylists around the world, including an advanced course at an exclusive institute in Paris, France. I’ve traveled near and far to learn and also to educate other stylists.” Even with the long hours and everchanging trends that keep Heather on her toes, she still has fun each and every day. “I’ve met so many wonderful people throughout my career,” she states. “My clients are amazing and they become good friends. Basically, I get to be creative all day while catching up with friends. What more could you ask for?” Her desire to do well by her clients has helped her grow her business in the greater Green Bay area, where she says client referrals have been integral to that growth. “I appreciate them so much and hope they continue to support me the way they have in the past several years,” she says. “Everyday I look forward to enhancing people’s beauty and spirits,” adds Heather. “You feel good when you look good and I am happy to be a part of that.”
