Holiday Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram opens service center for commercial vehicles Holiday Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram has experienced substantial growth in four different areas this past year. The growth occurred first and foremost in sales, a 15 percent increase over 2013; land; building expansion; new product development as well as the addition of the Business Link Commercial Customer Division. Business Link was set up by Chrysler to provide business owners a connection with commercial dealers, specifically equipped to help get business owners what they need to grow their businesses. In response to the difficulty of obtaining workers compensation insurance in the summer of 1915, a group of threshermen from Madison decided to form their own insurance company: Wisconsin Brotherhood of Threshermen Company, Limited Mutual. A century later, the threshermen name and focus is long gone, but the company — now operating under the familiar name of Society Insurance and specializing in insuring restaurants, bars and a variety of other Main Street businesses — is stronger than ever, as it embarks on its next 100 years in business. Student housing has been identified as an important priority at UW-Fond du Lac for many years and in 2014, a feasibility study indicated a need in the market and a strong interest by students in this option. Providing a residential life experience at the university became possible when Fond du Lac County entered into a land lease and developer’s agreement for construction and operation of the housing units last May. “We will be able to attract new students who are seeking the independence of living away from home, while

In October when Bergstrom Kia (the building’s occupant) left the area, Holiday Mazda officially made its move next door after remodeling and enhancements were made to the building and land. The site is led by Ned Kelly, general sales manager, flanked by Holiday veterans including Sales Manager Nick Faymoville, and a team of product specialists including long-time associates Tom Kuitert and John Krug, both ranked among the top 10 Mazda sales people in Wisconsin. Ryan Mikle, used car manager, and Willie Beyer continue to lead the service department at both Mazda and the adjacent Ford store. “Customer response has been ex-

For the staff at Holiday Automotive, continuous growth and constant change is a way of life. “There’s no time for the status quo in the automotive business. If you’re not moving forward you might as well be in reverse,” said President Mike Shannon. Significant examples of that are evidenced when driving past the dealerships four-store campus along North Rolling Meadows Drive between Highway 23 and Scott Street. Early in 2014, Mike Shannon Automotive Inc., the parent company of the dealerships, purchased the building and land adjacent to its Ford-Mazda store. The acquisition set the stage for a split of the Ford and Mazda brands and eventual relocation of Mazda next door. “This gives each its own facility and space to better represent each brand’s unique identity while offering customers

non. “But it goes beyond the products we sell. Our facilities, customer areas, amenities, online presence, people and processes all need to keep up, to differentiate us from competitors and, whenever possible, to delight our customers. Paying attention to the details like this is part of who we are as a company.” “(During 2014), we invested in a wide range of projects,” said Chief Operating Officer Rob Beane. “Here are two diverse examples: One was technology and equipment enhancements for our content development and digital marketing team to make our online shopping experience even more beneficial and satisfying for customers. The other example is the ongoing investment we make in developing the skills, talent and wellness of those on our team. At the end of the day, it’s the more than 270 people of Team Holiday that make the biggest impact when it comes to creating the best purchase and ownership experiences for our customers, and ultimately making visits here for any reason, worth the trip.”

Talking to and listening to customers are the methods savvy businesses rely on to keep on top of consumer wants. So when they learned that feedback from GM Quick Lube customers often cited the lack of a restroom in close proximity to its Quick Lube waiting lounge, Holiday Automotive President Mike Shannon, Director of Service-Parts-Body Shop Keith Mankovecky and GM Service Manager Dick Beyer promptly convened a huddle with key staff. “We began a dialogue on the merit and implications of redesigning the space that houses the fast oil change area,” said Beyer. In less than 48 hours, not only was a decision made to explore the project’s viability, a contractor was consulted to provide answers necessary to make an informed decision. “Before the week ended the decision was made to expand the Quick Lube waiting area including new restroom facilities,” said Beyer. “With project completion expected in February.” Fast and decisive action like this is commonplace at Holiday Automotive. “We’re in the business of selling new, as it relates to transportation,” said Shan-

lineup of commercial vehicles, a large selection of parts with next-day delivery on orders, ”On The Job Incentives,” up-fitting information and information regarding vehicle specifications, base weights and GCW’s Payloads. Business Link commercial manager Sean Smith heads up the Business Link division. Smith is a Fond du Lac native and veteran of the automotive business, with 20 years of experience in sales, service and parts. Smith notes that the newest addition to the commercial lineup is the Promaster family of front wheel drive commercial vans. With 13 different configurations, 3-wheel bases and low and high roofs, Promaster is designed to be superior to other American vans in the market segment in both cargo capacity and fuel economy. The Ram Promaster has a maximum 5,154 pound payload capacity with a 5,100 pound towing capacity. The gross combined weight rating for the 3.6 liter engine is 11,500 pounds, and 12,500 pounds for the 3.0 liter diesel. Chrysler and Fiat complement each other perfectly with Fiat diesel engines. “This newest addition to the Chrysler Commercial Vehicle lineup is already a big hit” said Smith. This past year Holiday Chrysler finished paving and lighting the four acres of land across from the current facility. It is being used for trucks and commercial vehicles. This has allowed us to keep a larger inventory on hand to better serve businesses. An addition to the service department was made in 2014 to accommodate heavy duty commercial vehicles. Set up with high ceilings, a 16-foot door and 30,000 pound hoist, it allows technicians to service vehicles that they could not before. With these changes, Holiday Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is positioned to continue with the substantial growth they experienced this past year, along with better serving both retail and commercial customers. Holiday Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is located at 815 S. Rolling Meadows Drive. The dealership can be reached at (888) 297-9066 or online at holidaycdj.com.

tremely positive! Plus this move has enabled us to specialize and become a destination for quality used imports and Mazda Certified pre-owned vehicles, as well,” said Kelly. In fall, Holiday Ford began a major remodeling and expansion project, with Ford funding half the cost as part of its Trustmark facility upgrade initiative. “‘Wow’ is the word customers are using when they visit,” said Gary Deitte, general sales manager. “The sleek new exterior and entry tower, bright, modern showroom and newly remodeled service drive are some of the upgrades. And now, when customers are picking up their new vehicle, a new four-bay inside delivery area is a real plus, regardless of the weather outside.”

Jeep’s Auto Body treats semi-tractors and personal vehicles with same mindset Auto body repair and painting. It sounds so simple until the time comes for you to need this service. Now you’ll find out just what is all involved with the work to be done. Your car or light duty pickup or van is a big investment for you. You want it fixed right and you want it to look good. Stop and think about those big semitractors and trailers cruising down the highway. If you think you’ve got a lot riding on a repair order, compare it to one of those big rigs. If the owners of trucks that are worth 5 to 10 times the

cost of an average automobile trusts Jeep’s, then so can you. Jeep’s has built its business on its finished products and satisfied customers. Jeep’s is part of an auto salvage disposal service, which allows them to keep repair costs low. They actively work with more than 30 insurance companies, to provide parts that can be used on vehicles in need of rebuilding. This salvage-disposal service provides a supply of cost-efficient parts for use in Jeep’s shop and many others in Wisconsin.

Tri Course ADI welcomes addition of Horicon Hills course, along Rock River Under the leadership of Lee Merkel, the Merkel family has put together a trio of golf courses to serve Fond du Lac, Washington and Dodge county golfers. All three courses are golfer friendly and will be available on opening day. Currently West Bend Lakes and The Golf Club at Camelot are open on a daily basis for golf, depending on the weather, and also for regular business. Horicon Hills will reopen in the spring after the takeover and some remodeling is complete. For the past 21 years, the Merkels have grown the West Bend Lakes Golf Club from a simple 9-hole course to a very competitive 18-hole facility. “The Lakes” is located along the Milwaukee River and was named for the 17-holes where water

comes into play. The Lakes is known for its daily players, leagues and annual outings, many of which have been recurrent for many years. West Bend Lakes Golf club is located at 1241 Highway 33, West Bend. It can be reached at (262) 675-9922 or visit westbendlakesgolf.com. About 20 years ago, the Merkels purchased The Golf Club at Camelot. Although this facility was an 18-hole course, they spent a great deal of time improving play. The most dramatic changes at Camelot are in the clubhouse and banquet areas. With the construction of a million dollar facility, it is a large wedding and banquet destination, with a main building for parties of up to 250, and five separate banquet facilities available for any size.

The Golf Club at Camelot is located at W192 Highway 67, Lomira. It can be reached at (920) 269-4949 or visit golfcamelot.com. Over the winter of 2014, the Merkels purchased the old Rock River Hills Golf Club in Horicon and renamed it Horicon Hills Golf Club. This course meanders along the Rock River in the City of Horicon sitting atop several beautiful hills overlooking both the course and the river. Horicon Hills is really a combination of our other two courses. The water will come into play, much like The Lakes. The clubhouse is much like the newer facility at Camelot and when refreshed will be much more customer friendly. Horicon Hills Golf Club can be reached at (262) 305-7735.

Huberty CPA firm expands in 2014

The past year was full of changes and growth for Huberty CPAs & Trusted Advisors, a regional certified public accounting firm headquartered in Fond du Lac. In January of 2014 the firm, founded by Wayne Huberty in 1981 and known formerly as Huberty & Associates, announced its new name and launched a new and improved website. As 2014 progressed, a merger with Biwan & Biwan, S.C., a CPA firm based in Sheboygan with a satellite office in Minocqua, resulted in the addition of two new office locations for Huberty. Company growth due to the merger came in the form of additional employees and a new company owner/shareholder, Carla Biwan Hameister in the Sheboygan office. “With the merger, our firm has grown from 24 to 37 full-time and part-time employees, said Ann Freund, the company’s managing shareholder/owner. Four other shareholders work with her to lead the firm, which also has offices in Ripon, Markesan and Plymouth. As 2015 kicked off, the company named CPA Nathan Volkomener as a shareholder of the firm.

“Nathan has been with the company since 2011 and is a great choice to help lead us into the future, Freund said. “In the past year, the total number of shareholders in our firm has grown from three to five, Freund said. Other shareholders include Greg Feucht and Gary Born. All shareholders are certified public accountants. “Existing clients now have greater access to our core services, which include audit, consulting and wealth management, Freund said. As Huberty has grown over the past 33 years, so has its client base. Currently more than 4,000 small and medium-size businesses, nonprofits and individuals work with Huberty. “Another new venture for us in 2014 was the introduction of a student intern program, Freund said. “We are bringing in business students from area colleges to work directly with us. It’s been a win-win situation and we look forward to continued success with the program. Huberty CPAs & Trusted Advisors is located at 145 S. Fond du Lac County and UW-Fond du Lac have a unique partnership, the vision of community leaders in the 1960s who wanted to ensure local residents had access to a University of Wisconsin education. The county owns the land and campus buildings while the staffing, programming and equipment are provided by the university. Fond du Lac County UW Extension offices are also located on campus. “Student housing is very important for UW-Fond du Lac, said Allen Buechel, Fond du Lac County executive. “It will help keep the classrooms full which is essential for the UW’s continued success. That success pays dividends to Fond du Lac County for the county’s ongoing investments in facilities at UW-Fond du Lac. Construction of the apartment-style units will be completed in time for 84 students to move in for the fall 2015 semester. Now what? The Society Insurance of today really got its start in 1975 when the company began offering commercial property and casualty insurance. What was a $3 million company doing business only in Wisconsin in 1975 reached nearly $160 million in 2014 while also doing business in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa. To celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2015, the company will hold a number of events throughout the year, including an exhibit, which will be open to the community, at the Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts on June 8 through 12 — the company’s birthday week. “This is a year to appreciate where we have been and where we are today, but it’s also a year to celebrate the future and the opportunities it will bring, Parks said. “Our key niche markets of restaurants and bars have stood the test of time, and we’re committed to carrying on the great tradition of protecting our policyholders that those threshermen started 100 years ago.

Their mantra is “TCO” (Taken Care Of) as in: “You’ve been TCO’d.” Through Dough Raisers, donating pizzas or donating money from our donation jar, Dominos has dished out a lot of dough. The company has been raising money for the Fond du Lac community for many years, and it strives to do more each year. In 2014 Domino’s donated $7,669.24

to local organizations. Pier Elementary and Waters Elementary took the top spots this year, and in general, 2014’s donations topped the previous year, and goals to donate more in 2015 are in place. Domino’s Pizza hosts its neighborhood for FDL Watches, a semi-annual party complete with door prizes, food and beverages. “It’s a great way to get to meet the people in your area,” said Sandy Ritchie, manager. “Even if it isn’t technically home for us.” The last fund-raising program every year is for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, which raised $2,200 in 2014, putting Fond du Lac’s Domino’s Pizza

in third place among 110 stores in its region, and within the top 200 stores in the nation. Collecting canned goods on deliveries, selling pink ribbons, holding a bike rodeo, a rummage sale in the parking lot are some of the other community involvement projects that Domino’s Pizza undertook in 2014. In addition, the store achieved a 100 percent payroll contribution rate to Domino’s Pizza Partners Foundation, a fund which helps Domino’s employees recover from unexpected hardships. The largest fundraiser was for the Police Unity Tour. The store sold blue ribbons, coupon books, and held a “dough” raiser.

Moraine Park breaks ground on Fond du Lac campus addition Moraine Park Technical College saw many accomplishments over the past year, with the most prominent being the commencement of a multifaceted construction project on the Fond du Lac campus. The project kicked-off on June 2 with a ground-breaking ceremony, marking the start of a campus transformation. The first phase of the project includes the construction of a new Student Services Center. The artful architecture of the new addition will provide a prominent main entrance for the campus, while the openconcept floor plan will generate an inviting experience for students and visitors. This space will act as a hub, making student service areas easily accessible. The new addition will house enrollment services and offices for counseling, advising and veteran services. The Student Services Center

is projected to be completed by March 2015. The next step of the project involves extensive remodeling to areas adjacent to the new addition. The remodeled space will be utilized by departments that collaborate closely with student services, including diversity relations, student life, registrar and financial aid. The new layout will encourage shared resources and also enhance the efficiency of service to students and visitors. Remodeling will take place in two phases, with the first having begun in December 2014 and the second to begin in May 2015. Last year was a busy year for facility renovations at Moraine Park. The Emergency Medical Technician program moved into a newly remodeled space on the Fond du Lac campus that features a state-of-the-art simulation lab to provide real-world experiences

for students. The new space includes a repurposed ambulance, medical simulation room and connected classrooms. The capability of open-observation training improves interaction with the instructor and also gives students opportunities to learn from each other. Another accomplishment in the Health Science and Human Services area was the exceptional national board exam pass rates achieved by students in Moraine Park’s health programs. On their first attempt, students from the 2013-14 graduating classes surpassed national pass rate averages in nursing, health information technology, medical laboratory technician, respiratory therapist and surgical technology—a remarkable success for those programs and students in 2014. Moraine Park Technical College is located at 235 National Ave. It can be found online at morainepark.edu.

Fond du Lac UW-Extension offers programs for many County 4-H celebrated the first 100 years of 4-H in Wisconsin

Members of Fond du Lac County 4-H learned and celebrated the history of the organization throughout the year and were part of “Day at the Capitol,” a statewide rally to kick of the Centennial celebration in Wisconsin. They also represented the county at the Wisconsin State Fair and in the Fall Forum in Wisconsin Dells, where three community members of Fond du Lac County were inducted into the Wisconsin 4-H Hall of Fame. Members of 4-H recognize and appreciate the support of this strong community as part of the organization’s success over the past century. To thank the community and give back, they participated in a wide array of community service projects. One of the clubs recorded 100 acts of kindness throughout the year. Looking forward to the next 100 years, the 4-H program has many opportunities for all youth from Kindergarten to Grade 13, with 21 clubs across the county and more than 50 projects. There are innovative programs and activities to keep on helping youth grow, learn by doing, become good citizens and Wisconsin’s leaders, make new friends and have fun. Technology in education advances at Fond du Lac

Christian School 2014 was a big year for new technology at Fond du Lac Christian School. Both teachers and students developed new skills and valuable experiences with new additions to the school’s technology department. Technology Instructor Taylor Noe believes in using this natural excitement to create student engagement in the classroom. This year, by adding a 3D printer to the technology lab, students were motivated to learn CAD and design and print 3D objects. Students at FCS used new video

cameras and green screens to create commercials and short documentaries. Because FCS trains young adults to serve God within their churches, students are taught proper use of sound boards and video and lighting equipment used in many churches. Teachers help students develop communication skills through technology. Through use of sound systems, video recorders, Powerpoints, and Prezi presentations, students learn to not only find new information, but to communicate it professionally.

Hagen named as principal at

Fond du Lac High School impetus for her family’s relocation to the area. Hagen’s goal is to establish a school climate of excitement and enthusiasm for learning. She would like visitors of the school to immediately sense that good things happen there and believes it is important that a warm, friendly, welcoming atmosphere is present at all times. She also believes it is important that all members of the school treat others in a kind and respectful manner, and plans to accomplish this by establishing a clear vision, modeling the expected behavior, and reinforcing conduct that promotes a positive school climate. Enhancing school spirit is also a priority; it is important that all students develop a sense of love and pride for Fondy so they remain loyal Cardinals for life. assistant principal at Woodworth for one year before being named the principal of Lakeshore Elementary in 2014. His philosophy of education has evolved over the course of his career, but maintaineds its focus due, in part, to his own children, Sophie and Molly. “Each day educators are presented with situations in which decisions must be made, said Steinbarth. “It’s imperative for me to treat and act in a way that I would want my own daughters treated while in school. Each student, regardless of academic ability or family income, deserves the love, guidance and encouragement to achieve excellence that will help better their life and hopefully the lives of others. As adults, it is perhaps the greatest of all responsibilities to help children realize their full potential and then step back and see what they become.

showcases what can be accomplished when all parties in a student’s life, take their academic and social well-being seriously. I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to work at a school where a shared vision for student success is evident every day. Principal Matt Steinbarth is a Fond du Lac native having attended Chegwin, Parkside and Sabish before graduating from L.P. Goodrich in 1994. He earned his bachelor’s degree from UW-Oshkosh in 1999, and a master’s in education from Marian University in 2003 before obtaining his Administrative license from Concordia University in 2013. Steinbarth taught briefly at Parkside Elementary before transferring to a math teacher position at Woodworth Middle School for 14 years. He served as

In addition, FCS’s technology classes are learning to set up and repair computers. Students have disassembled and identified all of the major components within desktop and laptop computers and have used an electronic computer scanner to find and then fix technological problems. “Our students do the upkeep on all of the school’s computers, including virus removal and getting new systems ready for use, said Noe. “This gives them valuable future job skills. The middle school technology class began with practice on Word, Powerpoint and Excel, but quickly moved on to new areas. Last fall students learned aerodynamics when they designed and built their own compressed air rockets. Students become enthusiastic about science

when rockets they create soar over 300 feet. FCS has also encouraged teacher involvement with technology through a new computer grading system and the use of Powerpoint projectors in every classroom. Teachers use technology to engage their students by including virtual tours that allow students to explore other countries, archeological digs and world-famous architecture. During 2014, Fond du Lac Christian School received its first Technology Grant from Brenner Tank. The grant will be used to help elementary teachers bring technology into their classrooms. Fond du Lac Christian School is located at 720 Rienzi Road. The school can be reached at (920) 924-2177 or online at fonddulacchristianschool.org.

Michelle Hagen, principal of Fond du Lac High School, joined the Fond du Lac School District in 2013 after 23 years of service with Milwaukee Public Schools. A Milwaukee native, Hagen earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in social work from UW-Milwaukee. In 1990, Hagen was hired as an instructional assistant to work with special education students. Inspired by her mother’s love of teaching and this experience, Hagen decided to pursue a career in education. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in education from Lakeland College and was hired as an elementary classroom teacher. Encouraged to assume a leadership position by her principal, Hagen obtained a masters’ degree in administrative leadership and served 11 years as an administrator in MPS. porting agencies like Feed My Starving Children, the Solution Center, and Holy Family Catholic Church. “The servant leadership model begins at a very young age,” said Erin Flood, principal for grades PreK through grade school. “Shaping the minds and hearts of our students through Catholic enriched curriculum, and servant leadership teaching is an important part of our academic model, and it starts at the point of entry.” The model is evidently attractive as SMSA is experiencing climbing enrollment. Up 7 percent this year, SMSA welcomed more than 100 new students. This increase in enrollment comes at a great time as SMSA prepares to move its St. Joes and St. Mary’s campuses up to the ledge to a complete PreK through grade 12 campus as early as fall 2016. The

offers new memorial scholarships The University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac Foundation awarded over $30,000 in scholarships to more than 30 students for the 2014-2015 academic year. When the Foundation received its charter in 1974, its purpose was to provide student scholarships, support professional development of faculty and staff and other educational projects. Those goals are being helped this year through two new scholarships: the Matthew Koenigs Awesome Scholarship and the Dar-

lene Simonson Memorial Scholarship. Matthew Koenigs attended UWFond du Lac before he died tragically in a car accident on August 24, 2012. He was a charismatic, positive people person and a friend to all. His parents wanted to do something to honor his generous spirit so they set up a scholarship in his memory. One of the criteria for the recipient is volunteer work, as Matt was generous with his time and money. The name, The Matthew Koenigs Awesome Scholarship,

reflects his encouragement to others to “Be Awesome.” Darlene Simonson taught elementary school for 30 years at Rosenow School in Fond du Lac. She valued education and desired her memorial to continue helping students as she did throughout her life. The Darlene Simonson Memorial Scholarship provides a way for her family, friends, and former students to honor her legacy. Judith Berger O’Brien gave the Donor Message at the 2014 Scholarship and Donor Recognition Reception. The Berger Book Bag Fund was established to honor the memory of Joseph S. father, Joseph S. Berger, Sr., was instrumental in the establishment and growth of the UW-Fond du Lac campus. It is a need-based grant for UW-Fond du Lac students for the purchase of textbooks and class supplies Fundraising efforts that support these and other UW-Fond du Lac Foundation goals include the Annual Campaign, which is underway, and the third Annual Corks & Forks Fundraiser, which is scheduled for Thursday, March 26.

Although founded on 100 years worth of history on “The Ledge,” St. Mary’s Springs is anything but a tired, outdated education system. In fact, according to measures used to gauge its academic prowess, SMSA continues to raise the bar for Catholic education in the region. SMSA’s annual graduation rate is 100 percent, with 99 percent going on to post-secondary institutions. SMSA students last year had an average ACT composite score of 24 (with 100 percent of seniors testing for the exam), that puts them two points higher than the state average where only 76 percent take the exam. SMSA students are also deeply invested in annual campus and systemwide community service events. Collectively, high school students contributed over 10,500 hours to sup-

Winnebago Lutheran Academy advances in technology, welcomes voucher students

Progress is indeed a word that can be used to describe Winnebago Lutheran Academy in its 90th year as a Lutheran high school in the Fond du Lac area. In 2014, WLA has implemented the “WLA 2020: A Vision, A Plan initiative, a long range plan intended to keep the school focused on the future and improving its education, facilities, communication, funding model and more. In the past year, WLA became fully accredited, receiving an “exemplary rating from three separate accreditation agencies. This process allowed

the administration, faculty, staff, and families to look at all aspects of academy life and study how it can do things better in the future through recommendations left by a visitation team. WLA’s participation in the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program also began this past year, as we welcomed 12 full-voucher students to campus. This program is a benefit to WLA association families who qualify for this program, as well as for the parents of the greater Fond du Lac area who seek a quality Christian education for their children.

This fall, WLA also made progress in its Mission Advancement office, as WLA’s first Coordinator of Mission Partnerships (CoMP) was hired. Aaron Bilitz, a 2000 graduate, is working in partnership with Director of Communication and Mission Advancement, Pastor John Boggs. Bilitz’s position will serve as the financial arm of this advancement team and help to put WLA in a stable financial footing for future ministry expansion. Fond du Lac Area Foundation creates Legacy Society, funds grants Students pose in front of a new bus added to provide services for students enrolled at Shepherd of the Hills.

Shepherd of the Hills

Parish and School growing steadily Shepherd of the Hills Parish, of Eden, welcomed Fr. John Radetski, in the summer of 2014, as its shared pastor with St. Matthews Parish in Campbellsport. Radetski brings years of experience to Shepherd of the Hills. Shepherd of the Hills Parish recently went through an expansion, which added two school classrooms; updated its computer lab with state-of-the-art technology; built locker rooms; and added more storage to the facility. The parish is growing, and the school’s enrollment has been up the last two years. Shepherd of the Hills is an accredited K3 through eighth grade elementary school. The smaller school allows Shepherd of the Hills to provide personal attention for every child and a feeling of community among its families. The parish now offers full-time childcare and has moved into a larger space to accommodate its growth. The school traded in one bus and bought two new school buses to provide service to its

families who live outside the Campbellsport school bus routes. The Shepherd of the Hills school bus now has a pickup point at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Fond du Lac. “Little Lambs playgroup has been added on Friday mornings. This provides a time and place for area parents to get together while their toddlers play. Life Teen Masses and Life Night continue and are a way for teens to celebrate an upbeat Mass and be a part of the Shepherd of the Hills ministry. Also new is the Silver Shepherds, for the older generation, which now meet monthly to socialize and help with school activities. Shepherd of the Hills is committed to its community outreach and supporting the dignity of human life. Parish chicken dinners, raffles and fish frys help to raise money as Shepherd of the Hills members are actively involved in outreach.

Through the years more and more local people have learned about the opportunities provided by the Fond du Lac Area Foundation to establish charitable endowment funds that stay in and benefit the community. Thanks to the generosity of thousands of local donors throughout the years, the Fond du Lac Area Foundation has now awarded more than 6,500 grants and over $13 million in the form of grants to the Fond du Lac community. “Our community is so fortunate that Carl Tonjes and the founding board of directors recognized the value a growing endowment could provide, said Joseph Braun, director of development. “Endowment was emphasized throughout the years. The Fond du Lac Area Foundation currently has over 300 component funds. These were started by people with a charitable dream who were able to see that dream become a reality with the Foundation. These funds can be started with as little as $1,000. Funds are a great way to leave a legacy for a family member or a loved one. Inspiring the community for nearly 80 years, Marian University was founded in 1936 by the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes and is serves as a key educational institution for the greater Fond du Lac community. Marian University has continued its mission of offering a variety of educational opportunities that support the goals and aspirations of its students, and the local Fond du Lac community. With the goal of providing innovative program opportunities, Marian University recently welcomed the addition of its 100 percent online RN-BSN Completion Program. The program allows working RNs the opportunity to complete their bachelor’s degree in as few as 15 months with an ADN from a Wisconsin Technical College, or in as few as 17 months from other accredited ADN programs. As Marian University continues to expand its program offerings, Marian made an addition to its campus with its recent purchase of the former Nielsen Building, located at 30 S. Main Street in downtown Fond du Lac. Marian’s purchase of this building will host the School of Nursing and Health Professions, as well as enhance the education of students through bringing together didactic and simulated learning in one

location, adding a simulated hospital unit to expand critical simulated learning experiences, fostering interdisciplinary education with expanding health professions programs and, being situated in the downtown area, allows Marian to continue community engagement efforts. Inspired to offer quality, relevant learning opportunities to the community, Marian will also be hosting several events throughout the year. Marian will be hosting its 12th annual Academic Symposium on Tuesday, March 24 in the Stayer Center Auditorium. The symposium will focus on the topic: “The Pursuit of Happiness: Is it possible in our violent world? Interested attendees may learn more about the academic program by visiting marianuniversity.edu/academicsymposium. In addition, throughout the summer months, Marian will host high school students on campus during its criminal justice and nursing camps, as well as host first-generation high school students as part of the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program. Drexel Building Supply celebrates 30 years Drexel Building Supply will be celebrating its 30th year in business in 2015. Drexel is one of the leading Building Supply Companies in southeastern Wisconsin. The company does more than just 2x4s. Its expertise includes building materials, home design, roofing and siding, trusses and wall panels, millwork and doors, windows, pole buildings, decks, cabinets, countertops, flooring and window treatments. In 2014, Drexel Building Supply expanded its family and opened a Design Studio in Sheboygan Falls in February, and a full service location in Wrightstown in April. The opening of these locations

added 15 additional jobs in the area. With the addition of these locations and growth within all of its locations Drexel increased revenues by 19 percent in 2014 with its year-end revenue estimated to come in over $98,000,000. The numbers aside, Drexel also fosters a team atmosphere like none other. Every single team member is empowered to wow our customers at every level. A comprehensive team training boot camp was launched in 2014 which provides our vision to all team members from day one. Drexel’s number one resolution in 2015 is to be more awesome than last year. The past three years Drexel was awarded one

of Wisconsin’s Top Work Place awards by the Journal Sentinel, and in 2014 they topped the work place list coming in at number two. “Customers could buy building materials anywhere,” said Owner Joel Fleischman. “We’ve made it our sole mission at Drexel to provide our customers with the best service possible. We become an extension of their team, lowering their stress, risk and making their life easier. We want to increase our customer’s competitive advantage and help lower their overall costs.” Drexel started in 1985 by Albert Fleischman, who opened Campbellsport

Building Supply at the site of a lumberyard that was closing after 75 years in business. Building was his passion and the focus of the business was on contractor sales. Muthig Industries Inc.

celebrates 50 years in business in 2015 Ray Muthig founded Muthig Industries Inc., a tool and die business, in his Fond du Lac home in 1965. By 1971, the growing company moved into a 2,500-square-foot building on Lost Arrow Road. The business continued to expand and by 1977, purchased the Midwest Stamping Company. Mathig relocated the company to Rolling Meadows Drive in 1981, and in 1986 Bruce Muthig purchased the business from his father. The business than moved to its current location in 1998, due to a growing demand for a much larger manufacturing facility. The business has experienced significant grown since 2007, when Muthig added the laser cutting division, and in 2009, a second shift and addition of a production and machining and turning department. The expansion warranted a 10,000-square-foot addition in 2010, giving them nearly 35,000-square feet of manufacturing capacity. This commitment to growth and diversification has enabled Muthig to serve a broader range of customers. Combining these departments along with the long-running tool and die and metal stamping divisions led Muthig transforming into a service manufacturer. Muthig Industries Inc. is a thirdgeneration family owned business. Troy Nachreiner and Jeff Nuss purchased the

faction is achieved in meeting the everyday values that clients rely on such as on-time delivery and quality assurance. Kondex boasts an on-time delivery average of 97.2 percent since 2013, but continually strives to do better. Its associates are a big part of this improvement effort and have already identified and implemented more than 125 process efficiency measures in the last two years alone. In terms of quality, Kondex nears perfection with 99.4 percent of its nearly 55,000 orders filled since 2013 being problem free. With so many successes, it’s no surprise that Kondex reached record sales and production levels in 2014. This in turn allowed for additional capital investments and created greater career opportunities. Twenty new positions were filled in 2014, including a mix of both office and manufacturing roles, and the company extended its streak of continuous plant employment to more than 35 years without a forced layoff. “Our associates come to work each day knowing they’re making a difference in our industries and communities. But what makes Kondex a great employer and business partner are the core values at the heart of all that we do,” Wessing said. “Our associates demonstrate and expect integrity, are ethical and trustworthy, operate in a manner that drives success as a team, and look out for the safety and wellbeing of others.” Kondex Corporation is located at 1500 Technology Drive, Lomira. Mercury Marine

2014 efforts promoted local job growth, hiring vets As the world’s leading manufacturer of recreational marine propulsion engines, Fond du Lac-based Mercury Marine understands the importance of service not only to its customers, but also to Mercury employees and the communities in which they live. In 2014, this was perhaps most evident in the company’s job growth and hiring practices, which continued to focus largely on hiring and promoting local residents and military veterans, while encouraging fellow Wisconsin employers to do the same. The results are tangible: Fond du Lac unemployment rates were at 5.4 percent in July, down from 6.5 percent in July 2013 and 8.1 percent in 2010. Since January 2013, Mercury has awarded 868 promotions to production employees for a combined annual salary increase of $2.7 million. During that same period Mercury promoted 35 employees from hourly to salaried positions for an additional $431,000 in increased pay. Mercury employs close to 3,000 workers at its global headquarters in Fond du Lac and the company’s local presence produces on average an additional six-tenths of a job for every job at Mercury. That means almost 2,000 additional jobs are created in the Fox Valley and surrounding counties by the employee positions at Mercury.

“Mercury has been a job-creating engine for the city and county,” said Joe Moore, Fond du Lac city manager. “Our unemployment rates have fallen steadily and Mercury is a big part of that.” The company continued its effort to attract veterans in the workplace. In June, Mercury hosted a “Hiring Veterans” business symposium for Wisconsin employers. During the event, representatives from the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs presented Mercury an award in praise of its veteran-hiring

practices. In August, Mercury President John Pfeifer accepted an award from Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and representatives of the WDVA at the Wisconsin State Fair. The award honored Mercury for its partnership with the state on veterans initiatives such as the June symposium and “VetCon: A Veteran Employment and Services Conference” for Wisconsin businesses and organizations. In 1979 Lindsey Bovinet set out to bring his passion for art, design and craftsmanship together in a new business venture. That drive and vision laid the foundation for a company that would become the leader in its industry. For the past 35 years, Interior Systems Inc. has served clients ranging from McDonald’s, KFC, Applebee’s and Hardee’s, Kohler and Harley-Davidson to a number of top school districts nationwide. During 2014, ISI expanded its customer base by adding companies like IHOP, Applebee’s, Dunkin Brands, Tim Horton’s, Snooze Eatery and Ferguson Plumbing, to name just a few. These diversification efforts led to significant sales growth in 2014. Fond du Lac continues to be the heart and soul of manufacturing and distribution for ISI. During 2014 ISI added 36 permanent positions and now employs more than 225 employees. bounces back after Lomira gas station burns in 2014 Cole Oil & Propane, now in its 94th year, started as a one-truck operation in 1921. The company now has one main office, two satellite offices, four bulk plants, three gas stations, 10 propane trucks, eight refined fuel trucks and 40 fulltime employees. This dedicated and team-oriented staff has given Cole Oil the opportunity to grow and not give up its “customer first” vision. The Cole Oil & Propane team was challenged with many obstacles last year. One was the severe propane shortage that affected the Midwest. Cole employees worked overtime to make sure no customer was ever out of heat. Maintaining poise throughout the shortage helped our customers feel confident that they would be taken care of no matter what. In November, the Hi Way Hop BP Gas Station in Lomira experienced

a devastating fire. No one was hurt, but the building was a complete loss. The community support after the fire was incredible, and Cole Oil is in the process of planning and re-building the site. Many improvements will be made to the new building and site and a reopening is planned for 2015. On Dec. 1, Cole Oil purchased O’Connor Oil in Fond du Lac. The acquisition will help the Cole team become more efficient in serving all of its customers with diesel, gasoline, lubricants and propane. Tony Cole, president, is looking forward to the new opportunities that the acquisition will bring. “The O’Connor acquisition opens up a door to serve a wider radius of customers and we can now take care of the Fond du Lac area like never before,” said Cole. “Fond du Lac and surrounding areas can look to us to offer exper-

With a nearly doubled sales floor space and more than ample parking, we’ve got everything we didn’t have at our old location.” The ReStore accepts donations of new, gently-used, and salvaged building materials as well as home improvement goods such as furniture, home accessories, and appliances which are then sold at discounted prices with all profits directly supporting the construction of Habitat for Humanity homes.

“It’s crazy to see all of the things that come through the doors,” said Construction Manager Joel Boelhower. “These donations help Habitat build more homes and move one step closer to ending poverty housing in Fond du Lac County.” Habitat Executive Director Paul Osterholm couldn’t agree more. His signature phrase, “Believe,” became the motto of sorts throughout the entire process. “This has truly been an amazing journey,” said Osterholm. “To watch the new location transform before our eyes into what we now call home has been a great blessing for Habitat and the ReStore.” ReStore is located at 65 W. countertops and hardware, Gruszynske was fortunate to be able to expand his staff, number of delivery vehicles, machines and even his facility in 2014. Starting the business in 2004 from his garage, Gruszynske now employs 21, seven of whom were welcomed to the team in 2014. The new employees, a full-time designer, marketing manager, two installers, two saw operators, finisher and a delivery person were added in 2014. With more bodies on staff to keep up with demand, additional space was needed. Two offices were added and a 1,650-square-foot addition enlarges the final assembly and finishing departments at the current W10271 Rose Eld Road facility. The addition allowed Gruszynske to purchase 10 new machines which include a sliding table saw, two 7-1/2 hp shapers, two power feeders, a face framing clamping table, door clamp machine, spray booth exhaust, pocket hole cutter and large edge sander. Gruszynske was also able to add

a fleet of vehicles in 2014 including two delivery and installation vans and two trailers. The JG showroom was also overhauled in 2014 with five new kitchen and bath displays. In only two years, John has quickly increased his number of projects, going from just 50 jobs in 2012 to nearly 175 in 2014, primarily in Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Dodge, Washington, Calumet, Winnebago, Brown and Outagamie counties. In 2014, the Fox Valley Parade of Homes featured five homes with extensive custom work done by JG Custom Cabinetry & Design which included kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, bars, storage locker systems, and much more. Gruszynske recently purchased three acres of land adjacent to his current facility with plans to build a new 15,000 to 20,000-square-foot shop in the next few years with offices and a large showroom.

FIRST WEBER continued from page B1

“Many are tired of the same old approach where realtors try attracting customers by boasting how they are number one. Homeowners and buyers are looking today for someone who cares more for their clients than themselves or their numbers. That is at the heart of First Weber’s commitment,” says Swick. To wit, Trulia and REAL Trends named First Weber’s Elaine Graf to the 2014 REAL Trends America’s Best Real Estate Agents list. Her clients also voted her into the top two Realtors in The Reporter’s Readers Choice award. Real estate teams are a new trend. Each person brings unique talents to bear so each client gets a higher level of service and results from their agent. For example, Walt

First Weber Northeast Winfield Homes celebrates Wisconsin closes 1,100 deals in 2014 15 years, offers luxury designs In March of 2007, the offices of Fond du Lac’s newest real estate company had been open only a few month when a gentleman walked in the doors of First Weber Realtors and asked for the person in charge. As Scott Swick entered the conference room, the gentleman began with, “So, are you Mr. Weber? I want to sell my home.” While First Weber had more than 40 offices at the time throughout Wisconsin, the company was virtually unknown in the Fox Valley, so the man’s assumption was entirely logical. But Scott founded First Weber Group of Northeast Wisconsin with his partners with the goal of bringing a fresh new approach to real estate to the Fox Valley. Today, First Weber Northeast has offices in the six Fox Valley cities of Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, Appleton, Berlin, Waupaca and Wautoma, and has 138 real estate professionals helping the people in their communities. With over $160 million in annual sales and more than 1,100 closings, First Weber is the largest Fond du Lac-

based real estate firm, and second in the Fox Valley only to Coldwell Banker/ The Real Estate Group. “There are two things that account for this growth: We have amazing Realtors who work to touch the lives of their customers and give more than they receive, and cutting-edge technology that makes it easier for people to buy and sell,” said Swick. Amazing Realtors are central to First Weber. In 2014, TV commercials aired across Wisconsin sharing the “human side” of real estate, with a quick, witty, personal touch. This commitment to giving is also shown by the company’s involvement in the community. The First Weber Foundation eclipsed the $1 million mark in 2014 of money given to communities in both the Fox Valley and all of Wisconsin. Here in Fond du Lac, the Foundation has sponsored (and their agents worked as volunteers) several homes for Habitat for Humanity, the Salute the Troops half-marathon runs, and partnered with the Solutions Center for 2015.

The Home Builders Association is considered to be the “professional stamp of approval” and encourages those in the community to utilize the services of its membership. As its motto states, “building relationships you can trust,” the association encourages you to ask those you do business with if they are a current member of the Home Builders Association. The public is always welcome to call our office to verify membership or request referrals for home improvement or construction projects. Annually, the association bring the industry professionals to the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds for SHE (Sport & Home Extravaganza). All in one place, customers will find informa-

They provide excavating and trucking services to the surrounding area. “No matter the size of the project we will provide the highest quality service at a fair price,” said Gerald Heus. “We will complete the project to your satisfaction.”

When Jim Baudry and Scott Swick formed Winfield Homes 15 years ago, they set out to forge a new path for homebuilding. So many people who had built had experienced a slew of problems: Going way over budget, not being able to move in on time, poor follow-up on repairs, high utility bills, unimaginative design, and tired old floor plans. After hundreds of homes, built in over 10 counties surrounding their home office in Fond du Lac, Winfield Homes has set a new standard for the industry. The company’s commitment to guaranteed price contracts, firm move-in dates, quick response to punch list items, high performing/ energy-efficient homes, implementing the latest design trends, and custom floor plans for each homeowner has earned the company statewide recognition and thrilled clients. The last year saw many new developments for Winfield Homes. It continued its expansion with a number of new homes in Fond du Lac, Taycheedah, Slinger, West Bend, Hartford, Trenton, Eldorado, and Barton. Every home is a luxury home, focusing on projects between $225,000 to $1 million. Winfield Homes also has a special expertise in lake homes. Tracy Nodalski joined the team as the job cost accountant, ensuring clients have real-time updates on their budget as they make the changes for their new home. Winfield Homes’ newest addition is Jenelle Bruno, a brilliant designer who works with each family to make all the design decisions for their home. One of the recent design ideas Win-

While building a new home may initially cost more than buying an existing home, because every Winfield Home is a high performance home, a homeowner’s cost of building then maintaining and heating/cooling it shows quick paybacks. Over a short time, it proves a better value than used homes. Winfield Homes hires thirdparty inspectors to certify the home is built to three powerful programs: RESNET, Green Built Homes, and Focus on Energy. In June, Just Fare announced the hiring of co-managers Laurie Woltman and Kelly Braun, who are excited to be part of an organization that empowers lives, educates communities and makes the world a better place. Adashun Jones sells nearly 700 properties

In business and in life there is a simple formula anyone can use to measure their improvements and achievements. It consists of three questions: Where did we come from? Where are we now? Where do we plan to be in the future? The answers define the path to success. Adashun Jones Real Estate began nearly three decades ago as one of Fond du Lac’s first locally owned and operated real estate sales firms. It was founded by entrepreneurs Frank Adashun & Jeff Jones who shared a common vision. The Adashun Jones Sales Team achieved nearly 700 properties sold in 2014. This number is a testament to the hard work, integrity and dedication of the entire Adashun Jones Team, and no

other real estate company in Fond du Lac listed, sold, or built more homes. Adashun Jones has held the number one sales position among all real estate firms in Fond du Lac in terms of homes sold, active sales professionals, open houses and homes available for sale. In 2014, Adashun Jones also made improvements to their internet footprint with a presence on Facebook. com and an improved website offering virtual tours and property information and the ability to share your favorites to Pinterest, Houzz, Facebook, or LinkedIn. Signature Homes by Adashun Jones was Fond du Lac County’s number one custom design builder in the past year. Its product showroom and design

Fond du Lac Economic Development Corporation assists 79 companies

Steve R. Jenkins, CEcD The Fond du Lac Economic Development Corporation continued to produce results that matter for the county through new initiatives and collaboration in 2014. It continued to see existing business growth as the economy improved. A good example of that growth is ACH Foam Technologies. The FCEDC also assisted 79 companies in 2014, up from 53 in 2013. It processed 10 revolving loan fund applications, up from six in 2013. The FCEDC also strengthened regional collaborations with work on Department of Defense grant projects that resulted from Oshkosh Truck layoffs, of which 25 percent were Fond du Lac county residents. This included collaboration of an Aerospace cluster development initiative that will involve the Aeronautical Business Park at the Fond du Lac County Airport. In collaboration with 15 other service providers, IGNITE! Business Success was launched in September to provide a seamless system of support for entrepreneurs in the county. The Center for Enterprise Development, a 501(c)3 non-profit based in the FCEDC offices, secured a $50,000 grant to develop the website for IGNITE! and to provide equipment at the Community Creative Space, a makerspace to be constructed at the Fond du Lac Public Library.

bolsters community outreach

Agnesian HealthCare has made a commitment to support its mission of hope, health and wholeness by enhancing the overall health and well-being of the individuals and families that live within its communities, as well as all its associates and their families. “Our primary mission is to provide excellent medical care to our patients, residents and their families through our ongoing investment and commitment in community benefit programs,” said Steve Little, Agnesian HealthCare president and AGNESIAN OUTREACH continued on page C3

unveils new technology Agnesian HealthCare continues its dedication, through long-term planning, to bring forward the most up-to-date technology and services to ensure that current and future healthcare needs can be met in the many communities it serves. “This past year reflects this ongoing commitment as we have advanced plans for some exciting developments to ensure we are delivering the highest level of care to all,” according to Steve Little, Agnesian HealthCare president and chief executive officer. Here are just a few examples of significant developments within Agnesian HealthCare in 2014 to help grow services and make access easier. • Wound Care: Expand its outpatient wound care services through a new center that offers treatment of chronic, non-healing wounds, including the use of hyperbaric chambers. • Autism Services: Provide services to help children and adults with autism maximize their independence and learn the skills to be successful in their homes, schools and communities. This has been done as Agnesian HealthCare welcomed Beyond Boundaries of Autism (BBA), formerly a program of Goodwill NWC. This partnership creates Agnesian Beyond Boundaries of Autism (ABBA). • Cancer Technology: Addition of a second radiotherapy system at the Agnesian Cancer Center to deliver Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), the most precise and sophisticated treatment available. The new SmartBeam IMRT system from Varian Medical System treats patients with prostate, breast, head and neck, lung, pancreatic and other cancers where precisely placed beams can be focused to carefully target tumor cells without harming surrounding healthy tissue. • Women’s health services suite at Waupun Memorial Hospital: obstetrics &gynecology, breast health coordinator, mammography, stereotactic breast

biopsies, ultrasound and bone densitometry. • Agnesian eHealth Upgrades: Enhance the way that patients can communicate with their healthcare providers through its Agnesian eHealth site. eHealth users can now send secure messages to their providers or make any other requests. • Training Grant: Partnership with the Fox Valley Workforce Development Board, Marian University and Moraine Park Technical College to submit, and successfully receive, a matching grant to offer a continuous 12-week training program for nursing clinical informatics associates.

chief executive officer. During the past year, Agnesian HealthCare extended its outreach to the larger community through new programs, services and partnerships. For example, Agnesian HealthCare continues to fund a wellness program coordinator, stationed at the Fond du Lac Family YMCA, to create programs and services that complement the Healthy Fond du Lac 2020 Initiative. This collaboration shows how combining efforts helps to foster measurable progress, while avoiding duplication of services. Agnesian HealthCare has provided strong leadership in the Healthy Fond du Lac 2020 Initiative - designed to enhance the overall health and well-being of people in our county. The plan addresses the issues of obesity, dental care, mental health and alcohol consumption. The organization also has extensive representation on planning committees as part of efforts with the Well City Fond du

Lac and the Green Lake County Wellness Coalition. The Waupun Area School District is collaborating with Waupun Memorial Hospital to provide a school nurse program to its students. By placing healthcare professionals on site, students are able to receive the healthcare, guidance and resources they need to grow into healthy adults. The nurses help to assess students’ health needs, and then to link resources in the schools and community to meet these needs. Pharmacists Affecting Care Transitions (PACT), now underway at St. Agnes Hospital, is helping patients and families successfully manage their medications so they can stay healthy. PACT features personalized medication teaching by a pharmacist. A pharmacist helps patients and families understand what meds they are taking and why, as well as how to take the medicine and how to manage side effects. Boudry Dental’s new therapy dog takes a bite out of dental visits

Boudry Dental opened its doors in April of 2014 in downtown Fond du Lac. A high tech family dental practice, it focuses on treating the whole patient with an inviting and integrative approach. Boudry Dental offers complete, individualized dental care from cleanings to orthodontics. Offering early morning, night, and Saturday hours they provide patients with convenient options not normally found in small private practice settings. Allowing patients to not have to take a day off of work is part of their goal of putting patients first. One of the many unique services Boudry Dental offers is a dental therapy dog. Boudry was the first dentist in the state to work with the Wisconsin Dental Association in bringing a therapy dog on board. Bailey, a 65-pound Goldendoodle, comes to the office to help both adults and children reduce trepidation about their dental visit. Research has shown

that therapy dogs help to reduce blood pressure, lower stress and anxiety, and stimulate the release of endorphins for a more enjoyable office visit. He is available upon request. Bailey can sit on a bed next to you, help calm your nerves, or simply lighten the mood with his companionship. Other unique services offered are TV goggles, iPads, massaging towels, coffee, fresh flavored water and snacks. In line with creating a peaceful atmosphere to patients, the office uses essential oils to help reduce bacteria, molds, and fungus. Oils also help create a spa like environment by improving psychological and physical comfort as well as providing health benefits. Dr. Boudry is proud to be serving the Fond du Lac community and excited to be active in downtown.

Boudry Dental is located at 10 Forest Ave., Suite No. 201. Dr. Boudry can be reached at (920) 933-6400 or online at drboudry.com.

Lutheran Homes and Health Services

Section C • Community & Services

advances utilized technology, recruits new staff For many, the days of seeing our medical record in a chart and seeing the physician and nurse actually write on the paper charts has been is a familiar sight for years. However, the health care world continues to change dramatically, and consumers want ready access to their medical history and information. Having access to this vital information can be life-saving, so more want their physicians to enter the world of electronic health records (EHR). Lutheran Homes and Health Services has met this challenge and is moving its operation forward to be a preferred provider in the Fond du Lac community, utilizing EHR documentation to provide better care and

outcomes. There are many advantages to moving into an electronic health record environment, which include: - Providing better patient health care management and reducing errors: Imagine a system that notifies staff when patient vitals are out of range, when medications need to be administered, or when patient histories warrant greater intervention and care. Today’s EHR environments do just that, which directly translates into better outcomes for the patient and in many cases speedier returns to home. - Assisting in recruitment of staff nurses and professionals: Once

considered a second child to acute settings such as hospitals, skilled nursing homes today care for more medically complex patients, which warrants a workforce that is technologically versed and prepared to meet the needs of today’s clients. Nurses today look to skilled and assisted living facilities as a viable option to their nursing careers. - Greater physician utilization and interoperability between providers: Today’s new physicians and nurse practioners are highly skilled and technology trained to work within electronic documentation environments. Physicians

Specialty services expanded with new hires at

Aurora Health Center

Drs. James Avery and Donald VanBeek joined Aurora Health Care over the past year to form a five-person general surgery group that practices in Fond du Lac and includes Drs. Patrick Daly, Richard Kiefer and Michael Kim. Drs. Avery and VanBeek have practiced in the Fond du Lac community for many years. They perform outpatient general surgery procedures at the Aurora Health Center. Another surgical specialty was added in 2014 with the arrival of Dr. Jeff Goldman and Dan Dukic, Nurse Practitioner in gastroenterology. Dr. Goldman specializes in leading edge care for gastroenterology issues, including esophagus treatments such as HALO, GERD/reflux treatment, ERCP, HET for hemorrhoids, IMT for patients

with C-Diff, irritable bowel and other gastroenterology conditions. Ophthalmology services were expanded with the partnership of Northeast Wisconsin Vision Ophthalmologists, Drs. Eric Larson and Stephen Merfeld. They offer all treatments for eye disease including non-surgical and surgical treatment along with No Drop Cataract surgery. They work closely with optometrist, Dr. Julie Henry and Dr. Thuch Anh Muelterer, a retinal specialist. The Aurora Vision Center offers treatment for all vision-related conditions as well as a complete line of glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses for infants through adults. Aurora also expanded its urology services with Dr. Richard Windsor relocating his practice to the Aurora Health

Center in North Fond du Lac and the addition of Dr. Matt Anderson at the Aurora Health Center in Fond du Lac from the Wisconsin Institute of Urology. Dr. Anderson offers surgical and non-surgical treatment of urological issues. His partner, Dr. Omar Atassi, also sees patients at the Aurora Health Center in Ripon that allows patients to access urology services in three locations in the Fond du Lac area. “The scope of services at Aurora Health Center in Fond du Lac continues to grow and is a reflection of the resources Aurora Health Care has as a system as well as to Aurora’s commitment to this community,” said Dr. Michael Sergi, internal medicine physician with Aurora.

and hospital systems look to partner with organizations that provide these tools, which create greater efficiencies and smooth transitions with other health care groups. Lutheran Homes and Health Services began the transition just over two years ago with a complete transformation of its technology infrastructure including servers, wi-fi environment and work stations and will be completing the final phases of the EHR conversion in early 2015. Lutheran Homes and Health Services is located at 244 N. Macy St. It can be reached at (920) 921-9520 or online at lutheranhomesfonddulac.org.

gets new principal

Taking over as the Roberts Elementary School principal as the school enters its fifth decade of operation is Dr. Brad Ebert who received his bachelor’s degree in 2003 from UW–Green Bay, his master’s degree in administrative leadership in 2006 from UW–Milwaukee, and his doctorate degree in urban education from UW–Milwaukee in 2011. Ebert has seven years’ experience as an elementary teacher, four years’ experience as an Assistant Principal at Theisen Middle School, and is excited to have an opportunity to now lead an elementary school. Ebert’s philosophy is grounded in establishing and maintaining strong relationships with students. “We want every student at Roberts School to love learning and to feel connected to their school,” said Ebert. “When students enter a smiling, happy and positive place, the likelihood of successful learning increases. Learning is at the center of everything that we do at Roberts School, but teaching students to be safe, respectful and responsible young people is equally important.”

exceeds expectations

The STEM Academy recently received a “Significantly Exceeds Expectations” rating, the highest rating possible, on the Wisconsin School Report Card. The students scored 14.9 points higher than the state average in the area of reading and mathematics achievement. The school’s growth score was 10.8 points higher than the state average. The growth score calculates year over year improvement in student achievement. The STEM Academy is a public, project-based learning school for students in grades 3 through 5. Students at the STEM Academy learn by creating hands-on projects that meet the Fond du Lac School District and State Standards learning expectations for all students. Parents interested in enrolling their students in the STEM Academy for the 2015-16 school year can contact Principal Don Smith at (920) 906-6722 or visit the STEM Academy website at fonddulac.k12. wi.us/school/stem-academy/30. The application period runs through February 27.

St. Peter’s Lutheran School honors ministry of retiring teacher A lot has changed in forty-five years. The mammoth computer systems that helped us send the first man to the moon in 1969 were predecessors of today’s technology devices that are small enough to fit in our hands. The traditional family of the 1960’s with dad being the primary breadwinner and mom the homemaker has been replaced by stressed out dual income households, single parents or blended families. Although technology, families, and the world around us have changed dramati-

cally since 1969, the teaching of God’s Word has not changed. St. Peter’s Lutheran School has been blessed with nearly 40 years of faithful service from Mrs. Cheryl Retzlaff, a first grade teacher who has taught God’s Word first and foremost every day. Mrs. Retzlaff will be retiring after the 2014-2015 school year. Her service began in 1969 for two years and then resumed in the 1977-78 school year after taking a break to have a family. Mrs. Retzlaff will be truly missed by everyone. Her humble Christian attitude, deep faith, love, and gratitude has inspired generations of students. Graduates with a strong faith and love for their Lord return and send their children to St. Peter’s to grow in God’s grace. Former students remember Mrs. Retzlaff going above and beyond the call of duty, having a cheerful outlook on life, and having a genuine love for the kids, making them feel welcomed in and outside the classroom. What has brought Mrs. Retzlaff the most joy as a teacher? “Seeing children exhibit their faith in their words and actions and showing that they are thankful for the wonderful blessings God has given them,” said Retzlaff. St. Peter’s school wishes Mrs. Retzlaff the very best in her upcoming retirement. St. Peter’s Lutheran School is located at 1600 S. Main St. It can be reached at (920) 922-1160 or online at stpetersfdl.net.

Residents in Fond du Lac have access to a broader array of services at Aurora Health Center after the expansion of its women’s health services. Aurora added several new women’s health providers over the past year to offer full time OB/GYN services in Fond du Lac. Dr. Robert Southwick, OB/GYN, returned to Fond du Lac, joining new Drs. Michelle Bahn-Palma and Holly Ray. All three join Dr. Adriana Schaufelberger who continues to see patients in Fond du Lac. Aurora also welcomed another certified nurse midwife, Katie Buser. She joins certified nurse midwife Loree Olson, offering the only midwifery program in the area. “It is important that these types of women’s health services are always available close to home,” said Southwick. “Au-

rora Health Care is committed to ensuring patients in the Fond du Lac area can access high quality and efficient services in our own community.” A number of outpatient procedures for women are also available at Aurora Health Center in Fond du Lac, including minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and other services for permanent sterilization and incontinence. Several of these procedures are offered right in the office without the need for the surgery center with minimal recovery time. Patients also have access to women’s health specialists Drs. Frank Whittmmack, fertility specialist,Ted Hayes, maternal fetal medicine specialist and Peter Johnson, gynecological oncologist. Aurora Health Care is located at 210 Wisconsin American Drive. Fond du Lac County Highway Department receives new home in Campbellsport Thomas Janke, Highway Commissioner After many years of discussion and planning for the replacement of the Fond du Lac County Campbellsport Highway Garage, the project finally became a reality in June of this past year. The new garage replaces an extremely congested 1930’s structure that was significantly smaller and had height restrictions and site limitations. Crews from Cardinal Construction, the general contractor hired by the county to construct the new facility, battled rainy weather throughout much of the early summer months. The new facility finally took shape as the contractor set steel and enclosed the building shell in September.

Crews then focused on the interior mechanics as county highway crews continued with base installation for the parking lot. As work progressed, the new salt storage building was raised from the ground to the east of the main structure. Crews erected the wooden structure, carefully setting its massive 6 by 14 inch wood posts into the concrete footings. Granular backfill was then compacted in place around the posts and footings to the hold the structure in place. The structure was then enclosed with the heavy wood planking that will support the 3,900 tons of salt the structure can hold when completely filled. Crews finished up the roofs and the

Highway Department prepared and paved the inside of the building floor. As various contractors continued their work on the main structure and its various supporting infrastructure, county crews prepared the stone base parking lot and installed the first lift of asphalt pavement down in November just before our first snow fall. Interior work continued through the month of December, in anticipation of occupancy in early 2015. When completed, the new 17,500 square-foot facility will provide for highway maintenance activities in the southeastern portion of the county, with a vastly improved and updated building for many years to come.

2014 District and Problem Oriented Policing Initiatives

In 2014, the Fond du Lac Police Department District Policing Teams continued to concentrate on specific efforts to reduce crime, disturbances, and other problematic issues in their respective areas of responsibility and continue to register notable success in those efforts. Some examples include: West District: - Traffic safety and accident reduction efforts on the Johnson Street corridor: Officers have identified through data analysis the most frequent times, days of the week and causes for accidents along Johnson Street. Officers are working to reduce accidents through concentrated enforcement efforts, education and environmental design. - Accident reduction on Rolling Meadows Drive near Walmart: Officers identified a high number of frequent accidents at this location. Officers and district leadership worked with the city engineer and property stake-

holders in the area to identify possible solutions. The city was awarded a DOT grant that will help with the construction of a turn lane at this location. Central District: - Lakeside Park quality-of-life issues: The District Officers hosted a community listening session at Lakeside Park to hear any safety or quality-oflife concerns that residents may have as they relate to Lakeside Park. District leadership developed directed areas of patrol for specific times at Lakeside Park to address concerns of possible disorderly behavior or other quality of life issues such as loud music. Auxiliary officers were utilized to provide a greater presence. - Third and Marr Street area: Officers worked with the residents and neighbors of the 3rd Street and Marr area on addressing a few problem houses where a large number of police calls for service were occurring as well

as illegal drug activity. Through collaborative efforts, the problems were abated. East District: - Fairgrounds Family Aquatic Center: Officers continued to work closely with staff to monitor and prevent complaints of theft, vandalism, or disorderly behavior in and around the Fairgrounds Pool. Through their efforts police calls for service to the pool have been reduced by 65 percent since 2012. - Make it Difficult for a Burglar project in the south east: After identifying a number of garage and vehicle entries in the south east, officers prepared crime prevention tips in the form of flyers that were delivered to homeowners in the neighborhoods. Directed areas of patrol were implemented, as was surveillance. A possible suspect was identified and the entries have since stopped.

Fond du Lac Police continue increased emphasis on

drug enforcement and prevention efforts in 2014

In 2014 the Fond du Lac Police Department continued a strong emphasis on high intensity drug enforcement as well as prevention efforts. Ongoing high intensity drug enforcement efforts: In 2014 the Fond du Lac Police Department successfully investigated and concluded 100 felony drug cases against individuals that are involved in the trafficking of illegal drugs in our community. That now makes over 231 felony drug trafficking cases/arrests since January 1, 2013, and in excess of 300 since it began its high intensity drug enforcement efforts in 2012. Drug-endangered children: The Police Department played a lead role in the planning, development and im-

plementation of the Fond du Lac Drug Endangered Children (DEC) Team. The DEC program is a local consortium comprised of several of the Police Department’s key community partners (District Attorney’s Office, School District, Health Department, Probation/Parole and Department of Social Services). Through the DEC program, organizations within a community work together to enhance their response to the immediate needs of drug-endangered children and to gather adequate evidence to substantiate prosecution of criminal child neglect/endangerment or other appropriate charges. Heroin/opiate community education and response: The Fond du Lac Police Department

partnered with several other community partners and played a key/lead role in the Fond du Lac Heroin Summit held at Marian University in March 2014. The focus of the Summit was to bring greater attention, awareness, and a community wide call to action regarding the negative impact that heroin/opiate abuse has had on the community. As a result of the Heroin Summit, a community wide task force was formed that will help to broaden and unify goals and efforts to more effectively respond to this epidemic through a four-pillar approach – prevention/education, treatment, harm reduction and enforcement. The Police Department has taken a very strong and active leadership role in that task force.

We are a “Bible” church! We are not “seeker sensitive,” “purpose driven,“ “or“emergent” but are unashamedly and unapologetically conservative, fundamental, evangelistic and Christ-centered. Some may consider us “Old-fashioned” as we still use hymnals for the majority of our worship music and there is a strong emphasis on reading and preaching God’s Word, but our love of God and one another is fresh and new, and many find the atmosphere here warm, friendly and reminiscent of what “Church” used to be! Visitors are always welcome!

Open Circle UUF is first church in Fond du Lac to ‘Go Solar’ In 2007, Open Circle Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (OCUUF) of Fond du Lac purchased and renovated the Print Shop building with the idea of recycling resources and keeping our spiritual fellowship a part of the downtown Fond du Lac community. The OCUUF congregation consists of approximately 60 members. One of the seven principles of Unitarian Universalism is “respect for the interdependent web of all existence, of which we are a part.” As a way of honoring that principle, members are very active with regard to environmental and social justice issues. OCUUF members are involved in the care of the Greenway, Gottfried Prairie & Arboretum, Hobbs Woods, Kiekhaefer Park, and other community parks and recreation areas.

Members make every effort to conserve energy and resources. In the fall of 2014, the OCUUF decided to install solar panels on its building. Everyone in the congregation supported this initiative and the money needed was quickly raised. On Oct. 10, the solar panels were up and running. On Oct. 22, an open house was held to celebrate and display the achievement. At the end of October, OCUUF was awarded a grant from Focus on Energy. The congregation is pleased to be using renewable energy at their facility, and hopes to be a resource for others interested in “going solar.” Open Circle Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fond du Lac is located at 19 E. Third St. It can be reached at (920) 924-8598 or online at ocuuf.org.

Family Resource Center makes educators and specialists available The Family Resource Center of Fond du Lac County, Inc. spent 2014 involved with many positive changes including the hiring of three new staff: Michelle Morris, Parents as Teachers educator; Michaela Cords, Hispanic Outreach specialist; and Brenda Getz, Family Life educator. A new program that FRC has available to the community is our Certified Child Passenger Safety Program. Kelley Baker, FRC Administrative Assistant has been recently certified to check car seats and booster seats for safety, proper

installation and possible recalls that have been installed or need to be installed into your vehicle. The Family Resource Center (FRC), a FDL Area United Way partnering agency, supports 4,300 children and families with pregnancy and parenting support through a variety of programs. On a monthly average, the Family Resource Center gives out 60 cans of formula, 30 cases of diapers and more than 250 families utilize the distribution closet each month for essential baby supplies.

FRC distributes infant care items that meet children’s most basic needs to reduce stress in the family by lifting some of the financial burden. Through the actual exchange, FRC strives to empower the families to reach out to the agency for continued support and education in their ever-challenging role as parents. The Family Resource Center is located at 104 S. Main St., suite 302. It can be reached at (920) 923-4110 or online at fdlfrd. org and Facebook.com.

Immanuel-Trinity Lutheran Church welcomes pastors

Ascension Lutheran’s Kids of God pose for a photo during a food drive in 2014.

Ascension Lutheran Church’s KOG program inspires children Ascension Lutheran Church’s fifth and sixth grade students, under the leadership of Children’s and Family Director Tina Tollard, take part in a Wednesday evening program called Kids of God. “KOG got its name from the kids who started the program seven years ago, said Tollard. “I have a tremendous group of leaders (Kevin Benson, Nicole Smith, Andy Swain, Sam Hagerman and Bonnie Pittl) who help me each and every week to lead this delightful and rambunctious group of kiddos. The group has grown to an average of 20 children meeting every week. Recently, the group served at Fondy Food Pantry’s, “Food for Thought program, which makes bags of food for children to take home on the weekends. “We brought over 27 bags of groceries to donate which filled a table and worked by filling the food

February 18, 2015

bags along with other various tasks, said Tollard. “Before we left I asked the kids to circle around so we could pray, all I said was make sure that your prayer is about what we just completed here. Not one adult leader needed to say anything; the kids took care of everything. Tollard adds that the “KOG’ers prayed for the children who would receive the food bags, the volunteers at the pantry, the families who come to the pantry and the community who supports the pantry. “When I looked up at the Pantry staff member, she was wiping away tears, said Tollard. “Afterwards she said ‘You all need to come back here to serve. You all behaved so well and worked so hard, you were amazing.’ The KOG’ers are always looking for ways to reach out and participate in the community. Ascension Lutheran Church is located at 901 County Trunk V. The church can be reached at (920) 922-3353 or online at alcfdl.org.

On Thanksgiving Day 2014, the 17th annual Free Thanksgiving Dinner was served at Immanuel-Trinity Lutheran Church. The dinner was prepared for anyone in the community who desired food and companionship on the holiday as well as for members of the church who wished to participate. Dinner consisted of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries, green bean casserole, carrots, rolls and dessert. 130 people dined at the church, about 100 dinners were carried out and 565 were delivered to homes in the cities of Fond du Lac and North Fond du Lac for a total of 795 total meals. This was an increase of 45 percent compared to 2013. These dinners were planned, prepared and served by 146 volunteers under the leadership of 12 team leaders. Volunteer workers were members of Immanuel-Trinity and many others from the surrounding community. Some took reservations or gathered food donations, others delivered posters, cleaned turkeys, peeled potatoes, filled orders, delivered meals, worked in the dining room and many other duties. Ingredients for the meal were donated by congregation members, as well as individuals from the community and local businesses, including 42 turkeys donated by a single anonymous individual. Immanuel-Trinity is very grateful for all the donations of food, money, time and effort, which allowed them to give the gift of a holiday meal to the community of Fond du Lac.

St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and School adds staff, plans new wood floor in gymnasium St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and School of North Fond du Lac recently had Steve and Katie Lehman join its teaching faculty, beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year. Steve Lehman serves as a fifth and sixth grade teacher and Athletic Director. Katie Lehman teaches math and also serves as lunch coordinator. Both enjoy their new school family after living previously in Michigan. Steve Lehman also enjoys the school’s

extra-curricular sports and has begun coaching boys basketball. St Paul’s basketball teams look forward to playing on a new floor beginning in the 2015-2016 academic year. Members of St. Paul’s have begun work on making our gymnasium more energy efficient by insulating our walls and more spatially and functionally efficient by ordering retractable bleachers and additional side hoops so that students can utilize them during

physical education classes and basketball practices. A new stage has also been added to be used for school plays and performances. Finally, a new wood floor will be installed over the summer to complete the project. The logo at center court of our new basketball floor will feature a picture of the cross which was designed as part of our updated school logo. Our St. Paul’s Lutheran Pioneers logo now features our school’s mascot looking

boldly forward onto the next challenge, while being firmly rooted in the cross of Jesus Christ. For information, contact Pastors Thomas Behnke and Michael Kampman, Principal Aaron Hartwig, and Preschool Director Susan Wright. The Salvation Army promotes officers to Captains, hires new staff The Salvation Army of Fond du Lac’s 124th year was built upon its relationship with the community it serves. Leadership from Corp. Officers Steven and Telinda Wilson, a re-energized advisory board and a dedicated staff created needed change, and even earned the rank of Captain in July. The food pantry now offers a direct entrance, comfortable waiting area and a shopping-like experience. In August, the pantry’s 33,000 pounds of food were distributed to 1,056 families, nearly double last year’s. FHS Choral Department’s Fill the Sleigh food drive, the Sunny 97-7 Turkey Round Up and Marian University’s Sabre Garden were vital to meeting the increased need. The Salvation Army hired two new professionals in August. Amber Arntz, formerly of the Stevens Point Hope Center, holds a B.S. in health

care and business administration and course work in transnational human services leadership, and is now a caseworker. Connie Millard returns to guide Community Resource Development. Millard’s experience includes work with the Night with the Stars fundraiser, United Way Power of U School Penny Campaign, and 2014’s Heroin Summit. The staff is focused on creating new environments and programming, which emphasizes volunteering, education, experience, and ideas to grow long-term service and resources for families at/below 130 percent of the poverty level. The Salvation Army has also increased partnerships with STEM Institute, Moraine Park, Marian College and UW-FDL. Also this year, a homeless, single mother of four was referred to the Salvation Army by the school district, becoming their first Pathway

Park was completed, providing boaters and anglers options they haven’t had in years. In other areas, like the library, we saw the summer reading program explode with more participants than ever. And, the Fond du Lac Public Library won the first ever CitizensFirst Grand Giveback award. Another award went to the City of Fond du Lac’s comptroller, who received recognition for excellence in financial accounting. The city will also now provide free Wi-Fi along Main Street for those who want to save money while using their “smart” devices. Throughout the city, transit customers will soon see new benches at our improved bus stops and visitors to our city will see new signs welcoming and directing them. Both the city’s police and fire departments remained extraordinarily busy, answering over 56,000 and 7,000 calls respectively. Fond du Lac’s Fire Chief received recognition as the Fire Chief of the Year from Wisconsin’s Fire Inspectors. The Police Department continued high intensity enforcement efforts, its leadership role in the Drug Endangered Children (DEC) Task Force, the FDL Heroin Summit, and the community based task force to combat the use and sale of illegal drugs. In 2014, we saw many changes for the good and many people doing great things. We hope to continue that momentum throughout 2015.

recognizes continued improvement throughout Thomas Janke, Highway Commissioner Unlike the previous year where we had a number of large-scale Highway reconstruction improvements including the Pioneer Road underpass and the County Trunks M and V reconstructions, this year highway crews focused on rehabilitation efforts on nearly 15 miles of county highways. County Trunk TC from Highway 26 west to Highway 49 was pulverized and paved. The project included replacing failing cross culverts and improving the Highway ditches for better drainage and snow storage. Highway crews increased the pavement width, modified steep embankments and removed hills for better sight distance. New gravel shoulders were installed and new pavement markings applied. Similar projects occurred on County Trunk T from Highway 26 to County Trunk C, County Trunk FF from Highway 26 to Winnebago County, and County Trunk Y from Highway 23 to County Trunk T. Existing asphalt was pulverized and re-graded for an improved base and four inches of asphalt. Crews finished with new gravel shoulders and pavement markings. Similarly County Trunk OOO (Scott Street), from County Trunk VV to VVV was rebuilt and widened to improve

vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle traffic flow to the businesses in that area. Narrow shoulders were eliminated and pavement markings were improved for better lane definition. County Trunk G from County Trunk WH to the village of St. Cloud was pulverized and paved. Failing cross culverts were addressed and four inches of asphalt was installed on a wider pavement section to accommodate the agricultural and vehicle traffic in the area. The last project included reconstructing County Trunk WW from Mt. Calvary (County Trunk CCC) to Calvary Station (County Trunk WH). This project included milling the asphalt and rubblizing the old concrete pavement beneath it. Failing base areas were excavated and stabilized, and then the reclaimed asphalt millings were installed, graded and compacted to form a 28-foot wide pavement section. Concrete curb and gutter was installed in some areas to improve drainage. In total, over 15 miles of county highways were upgraded throughout Fond du Lac County in 2014. Virtually all the work was done with the same equipment and crews that plow in the winter, which makes for very good use of staff and equipment.

growth of development, decrease of unemployment

By Joe Moore Between October 2013 and October 2014, unemployment in the City of Fond du Lac dropped from 7.2 to 5.2 percent, pointing to an expanding local economy and the opportunities that go with it. Beyond the employment numbers, we see many good signs. Agnesian Healthcare significantly expanded its facility on Camelot Ave. Meanwhile, Grande Cheese broke ground on its new corporate headquarters across from the Agnesian project. Among other notable positive economic signs, the Wisco Hotel Group began construction of a conference center adjacent to its Holiday Inn, something that will enable our Convention and Visitors Bureau to attract more meetings of professional associations from throughout the state and the region. Wisco will also open a new Holiday Inn next to its existing hotel and a Hampton Inn will open on Pioneer Road. Marian University will expand its campus by relocating its nursing program downtown. Just cross the street, the former Retlaw Theater building will emerge as a home for businesses, as well as residents, and UW-Fond du Lac will see its first on-campus housing units constructed. Many other changes in 2014 will provide long-term improvements. The “Loop” opened for bicyclists and pedestrians beginning what will be an ever-improving recreation trail. Jesus’ Little Lambs Childcare Center Announces New Administrative Director

Over the course of the last year, Jesus’ Little Lambs Childcare Center has seen some big changes. The center itself is enjoying having the blessing of ample space that the addition of 2012 gave it. The center also has been blessed with growth over the course of the past year. Along with that growth, Jesus’ Little Lambs is pleased to announce a new Administrative Director to its

staff, Mr. Kurt Callaway. He and his family moved to Fond du Lac from Brownsville, where he was the principal of St. Paul’s Lutheran School. He served as principal at St. Paul’s Lutheran school for 18 years. Callaway was also a teacher at St. John’s Lutheran School in Princeton for five years. Callaway started this position in July of 2014. Callaway is thrilled to be a part of the Jesus’ Little Lambs family

and is committed to the same quality, Christ-centered child care that Jesus’ Little Lambs has offered for years. Callaway and his wife have two children and the family enjoys camping, traveling and collecting Disney memorabilia. Jesus’ Little Lambs Childcare Center is located at 855 Martin Ave. It be reached at (920) 921-6516 or online at gshep.net.

NAMI’s affiliate hosted Barb Bigalke, executive director of the Center for Suicide Awareness based in the Fox Valley. Barb provided a dynamic and eye-opening presentation on the often hidden topic of suicide in the community. She helped those in attendance better understand that suicide has a certain stigma to it, and both those who have suicidal thoughts and families who have lost (Held at St. Paul’s Ev. a loved one to suicide are often left with few resources to help them handle their emotions and grief. Summer ended with a bang as the gun sounded to start the third annual Horicon Bank 5K Run/Walk for Wellness. All contributions helped support Friendship Corner and the NAMI Signature Programs. It allowed NAMI to promote awareness through a number of media outlets and keep the conversation going on mental health. In 1990, Congress established the first full week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW). To recognize this week, NAMI Fond du Lac partnered with the Student Social Work Association (SSWA) at Marian University to bring Dr. David Mays to Fond du Lac. Dr. Mays, a psychiatrist, is the former forensic director at Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison. He educated an auditorium of more than 160 guests with The New Science of Genetics and New Frontiers in Mental Health. NAMI Fond du Lac has a lot to look forward to in 2015. It has increased its staff to two part-time positions. Its new website, namifonddulac.org, is up and running. NAMI is seeking people interested in facilitating peer-to-peer (peer-led recovery education course) and Ending the Silence (in-school educational presentation); then plans on introducing these programs into the Fond du Lac community by year’s end. NAMI Fond du Lac is based at Friendship Corner, 27 Third St. It can be reached at (920) 922-0566 or online at namifonddulac.org.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Fond du Lac County is proud of its continued success with its council-run store. Due to monetary and goods donations, it is able to help those in need through its conference home visits and client contacts, which continue to increase. New this year at the St. Vincent de Paul store is Audrey Watry, volunteer coordinator, who joined the staff last summer. With Watry’s extensive computer experience, St. Vincent de Paul is now on Facebook and Craigslist. She also oversees and directs over 150 dedicated volunteers. St. Vincent de Paul is always looking for new volunteers who have a few extra hours to give to a worthy cause. Other areas of growth in 2014 included seasonal displays, jewelry and designer clothing availability. Ebay sales for unique items have steadily increased as well. The ever-popular Vinny Card Club continues to grow due to the super specials offered on a monthly Vinny Calendar. Customers can view this calendar on the St. Vincent de Paul website and in the foyer of the thrift store.

“Jackson” appears like your average 16-year-old male, wearing a T-shirt, jeans and tennis shoes. He is quiet, shy and polite. He talks about the things he enjoys like skateboarding, rap music and seeing friends at school. However, Jackson has burdens your typical teen does not have. With a father recently incarcerated and a mother addicted to heroin, he has experienced more violence and instability than any child ever should and he was forced to care for himself at a young age. When people want to become foster parents, they often think about babies. However, there is a greater need for foster families willing to care for larger sibling groups and teenagers. Due to a lack of foster homes to care for these specific groups, Social Services is forced to look for homes outside the county. To avoid placing children outside the county, the department has developed a program called Specialized Foster Homes. These homes are able and willing to care for larger sibling groups and teenagers.

Teenagers often age out of the foster care system and are left without the necessities other teens take for granted, such as a family support system, aid in obtaining a driver’s license and gaining first-time job experience. In Wisconsin last year, 340 teenagers aged out of foster care. Luckily Jackson will not become one of those statistics because a family became licensed for foster care to give him a safe home. Before making the move, he was homeless, moving from one friend’s couch to another. Foster parents can be married, single, rent or own their home. Monthly payments are provided to help cover expenses. Free training is provided. There are different opportunities for families willing to help. This includes becoming a receiving or respite home. Receiving homes take children on an emergency basis. Respite homes take children for short periods of time.

The council also hired Jean White as its public relations/communications representative on June 1. Her job includes promoting the store and educating communities throughout the county about how the Society works. Since St. Vincent de Paul’s National Council has promoted “systemic change” as a direction for conferences to follow, the Fond du Lac District Council’s Development Committee has pursued the subject of immigration. An attorney has worked with a defined group of immigrants who require certain documents. St. Vincent de Paul looks forward to assisting qualified individuals in this matter as this is a national concern as well. Its mission continues to help anyone in need through spirituality, friendship and service.

create, invent and learn. “Someone once had a great analogy of what’s going on inside public libraries today,” said library Director Jon Mark Bolthouse. “The library of yesterday and today is like a grocery store. People find the ‘ingredients’ they need and take them home, where they use them to make, build and conceive their project. But the library of tomorrow will be the kitchen, where people congregate and make their projects on site.” Planning for the Fond du Lac library’s kitchen, The Idea Studio, has been underway for 18 months. Bolthouse and an ad hoc community committee have worked through myriad decisions: what equipment should the studio have? What features will make it work? Where does it go? Early plans call for The Idea Studio to be created just inside the Main Library’s main entrance and for it to include work tables, secure equipment storage, display cases, a projector and screen, a sink and a digital recording booth. Bolthouse said construction should begin this winter, with completion targeted for late spring 2015. Funding for constructing and equipping The Idea Studio has been secured through grants and private donations, including $25,000 from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. The library already has much of the studio’s equipment in place, including two 3-D printers, computers, digital video cameras and DIY tech kits (Makey Makey, Arduino and Kano). Much of this equipment has been put to use in library programs, including 3-D Open Print sessions and “Intro to the Arduino” classes. While Bolthouse envisions The Idea Studio as a space for all kinds of creating, with an emphasis on technology, he knows it will evolve as the community makes it its own. “After all, you never know what’s going to happen when you get a bunch of creative cooks in the kitchen,” he said. reports ‘safest cities’ recognition The North Fond du Lac Police Department continued to work on rebuilding in 2014. The department has been short-staffed since 2012 when three sergeants left to pursue opportunities with other agencies. Like most agencies, the department filled those vacancies from within its ranks, and it has been working to backfill patrol vacancies since. With the most recent hiring in August, the patrol ranks of the police department are now filled. They will continue to work to fill the final two vacant positions, investigator and captain, in 2015. In spite of struggling with staffing issues, the department continued its commitment to community policing and aggressive patrol. Those efforts paid off when North Fond du Lac was named one of the 50 safest cities in Wisconsin in 2014. SafeWise Report ranked North Fond du Lac No. 23 in the state, and it was the highest ranking municipality in Fond du Lac County. To compile this report, SafeWise used the most recent FBI crime data from 2012 to analyze and rank these cities, which all have a minimum population of 5,000 people. “We will continue to work with the residents, businesses, and organizations of this great community to keep our streets safe,” said Chief Darren Pautsch. “This is truly a communitywide effort since the police cannot be everywhere at once and we rely on our residents to help serve as our eyes and ears.” SafeWise looks at crimes from part one of the FBI Unified Crime Report (UCR) data, which focuses on violent crimes (aggravated assault, forcible rape, murder, and robbery) as well as property crimes (arson, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft). From there, they calculate the chances of these crimes happening out of a thousand in order to level the playing field for cities of varying populations. From all the cities in Wisconsin, the list was narrowed down to 50 and assigned rankings according to data provided by the FBI’s UCR report. The North Fond du Lac Police Department can be found online at nfdl.org/departments/ police.

This investment has increased the overall assessed value of downtown properties by 38 percent. First floor vacancy has declined from over 10 to 6 percent. Much of the success in downtown can be attributed to joint planning efforts between private and public sectors. These plans have provided a framework for coordinated action, resulting in consistent and increasing investment in downtown from the City, business leaders and other civic partners. Downtown Fond du Lac has sustained the largest number of new housing units (104), and is in the top quarter of programs for net business and job growth (107 new businesses and 223 new jobs).

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office:

Jail, support staff, School Resource Deputies, Civil Process Division and the Sheriff Benevolent Association The Fond du Lac County Jail Division conducted 3,812 bookings which resulted in an average daily population of 297 residents. The jail continues to be one of only five in the state to be medically certified and is fortunate to also be one of only 13 juvenile detention facilities. An increased number of juveniles placed in the Fond du Lac facility serves as another revenue stream of the Sheriff’s Office. The dedicated deputies and medical staff maintain the vast medical, psychiatric, food service and laundry needs of inmates and maintain safety and security for themselves and the public. The Jail Division hired Stephanie Herzberg, Kyle Beck, Robert Tank, Lucas Olson, Kaitlyn Fredrick, Michael Vis, Emily Costello, Aaron Walker and Baillie Kettelson as correctional deputies. The support staff of the Sheriff’s Office and Jail serve an integral role in transcribing, distributing and forward or file the workload generated by the several divisions of the Sheriff’s Office. Technology allows the support staff to access digital recordings of reports directly from their designated desktop computer. The Sheriff’s Office continues

its commitment to the three school districts in the county by three school resource deputies. Each has many objectives: provide safety and security to ensure a safe learning environment, educate, create goodwill, increase understanding of law enforcement and strengthen student/ deputy relationships. The Civil Process Division continues to remain active serving various legal papers, seizing of property or vehicles, evictions, sheriff sales and restraining orders. Civil Process also serves subpoenas, small claim summons and wage garnishments. Many of these duties are mandated by state statute exclusively to the sheriff. The Sheriff Benevolent Association was created to enhance the general welfare of the community and promote the its continuing growth and overall health. This year there were fundraisers and two food drives. One of the goals is to establish a Benevolent Scholarship. The Board of Directors of the Sheriff’s Benevolent Association is comprised of Eric Halbach, Paul Rottscholl, Jim Borgen, Donna Whitty and Karla Lockwood.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office: FDL County Historical Society Staff, Patrol Division and Detective Bureau re-opens Thorton Library, offers tours It was a challenging 2014 for the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office that involved traffic crashes, calls for service, investigations, safekeeping of offenders while continuing to be fiscally responsible. There were well-deserved retirements, promotions and newly hired patrol and correctional deputies that continue to be an exciting and rewarding change to the Sheriff’s Office family of more than 150 deputies and employees. Sheriff Mick Fink was elected to his third term of office for a term of 2015-19. Lt. Linda Schmitz (35 years) retired along with Patrol Deputy John Abler (34 years). Lt. Ryan Waldschmidt laterally transferred to Asst. Jail Administrator/Juvenile Superintendent. Sgt. James Borgen was promoted to lieutenant, Patrol Deputy Ryan Zitlow was promoted to sergeant and Correctional Deputy Alex Volm was promoted to patrol. The Patrol Division remains the most visible division and is responsible for 724 square miles. Patrol deputies,

along with numerous other agencies in Fond du Lac, participate in “Saturation Patrols” during holiday weekends throughout the year in an effort to enhance law enforcement presence to increase road safety and public compliance with Wisconsin traffic laws. Patrol deputies conducted 12,300 traffic stops and 15,194 calls for service which result in traffic crashes, county ordinances and hundreds of criminal arrests. The Patrol Division also conducted 1,107 transports of persons held by other counties or institutions that involved a total of 3,309 hours. The Detective Bureau was quite active with steady investigative caseloads of sexual assaults, burglaries/thefts, substantial batteries, fraud, child abuse and deaths. Higher profile cases involved child assault and pornography, armed home invasion resulting in harm to homeowners, and a suspect shot by another suspect while fleeing from a county residence. The Sheriff’s Office remains traditional and image-minded. The appearance, ethics and demeanor of deputies instills public trust and confidence.

The FDL County Historical Society, deeply rooted in the history and preservation of our community, is committed and eager to progress forward finding new and innovative ways to educate, enhance and inspire the residents of our county. The Fond du Lac County Historical Society, most noted for the Galloway House and Village, has much to offer our community. Memorial Day served as the official kick-off date. Regular hours commenced June 1 and ran through Labor Day. The ice cream social took place August 17, bringing guests from far and wide to enjoy the intrigue of the village, tours, food, ice cream and, this year, a vendor fair. October brought The Ghosts of Galloway Haunted Village. This ghoulish experience is not for the weak at heart. Guests tour the creep-ified village were held on Fridays and Saturdays. For those with little ones, or weak stomachs, a toned-down version was available on select Sundays. The Thorton Library re-opened to the public in 2014, where community members were given access to decades

of priceless information. The library is open year-round from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Christmas at the Village also returned in 2014. The Village was brought to life with lights and the sounds and smells of the holiday season, and spread the magic of the holidays. Tours are available to educational, daycare and adult groups. Visitors can travel through our historic village with your own tour guide. Bring a lunch along and eat in the pavilion. If an indoor history lesson is more appropriate, we offer educational traveling trunks. There is a variety to choose from. These trunks can aid teachers in helping deliver history topics. Looking for that unique location to host picnics, teambuilding activities, weddings, reunions, renewals, and the like? Consider the Village. Reasonably priced, our location makes the perfect backdrop for a relaxing and one-of-a-kind experience. The Fond du Lac County Historical Society can be reached at (920) 922-1166 or online at fdlhistory. com and on Facebook.

Tour the Town Art Walk THELMA Sadoff Center for the becomes established community event Arts welcomes a variety of events

Tour the Town Art Walk has not missed a month since its inaugural debut in September 2011 and it has grown to become a well-established community event held from 5 to 8 p.m. on the third Friday of each month. The community art walk was the brainchild of groups of downtown businesspeople, local artists and community-minded citizens who shared a passion for the arts and were looking for a way to nurture and cultivate the arts in Fond du Lac. With no funding and an all-volunteer workforce, this small but resourceful group created the event. Regulars who have supported the art walk from the beginning enjoy seeing the variety of artwork, artists and new venues participating. Visit downtown on a Friday night and stroll from shop to shop, seeing not only interesting merchandise from local businesses, but some really creative art as well. Meeting the artist makes it personal. In addition, new art galleries and studios have opened in Fond du Lac and the boundaries of the art walk have grown with venues participating beyond the downtown area.

Artists Melissa and Brian Kolstad have welcomed the opportunity to work with local businesses and have a forum to display their most recent artwork. Brian is a photographer and Mel works with collages and paper making. “I love interacting with the people who come in and want to know how I create my art pieces,” said Mel Kolstad. “They are genuinely interested in my art and their comments always inspire me.” “I see new people in my gallery during every art walk,” said Kathryn Dreifuerst, owner of the Riverwalk Art Center. “I’ve been involved with Tour the Town for the past few years as both a participant and more recently as a host at Share Fine Art Galleries. It’s been exciting to watch this event grow each month,” said Sue Hoehnen, gallery manager of Share Fine Art Galleries. Up-to-date information can be found online at tourthetownfdl.com and interested parties can sign up to have the map sent to their smart phone.

The community arts center is thriving, but like the unfinished A in the logo, more work needs to be done. Tens of thousands of people attended concerts, art exhibits, films, theatre, weddings, and corporate and social gatherings at Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts (THELMA) since opening September 2013. Violent Femmes founding member Victor DeLorenzo with his chamber rock trio Nineteen Thirteen and Grammy-nominated New Orleans boogie blues performer Marcia Ball graced THELMA’s Great Hall stage this year. Filmgoers enjoyed Fond du Lac’s debut of Grand Budapest Hotel and an oldie, King Kong (1933 version), at THELMA. Art created by some of Wisconsin’s best artists was displayed in a group show, 45 North, at THELMA and THELMA also held its first annual Membership Exhibition. THELMA was also the venue of James DeVita’s one-man show, which was really a stand-up comedy routing – In Acting Shakespeare. “After recently getting back into Shakespeare with some great PBS shows,

I would never have imagined that in a relatively small community such as ours I would be able to watch live theatre and to have the performance be magnificent as it was. I was simply impressed beyond words,” said Jon Starling, who attended the event. Starling became a member of THELMA after this event. You do not need to be a member to attend events, enjoy a drink at the bar on THELMA Thursdays, or tour the art exhibits. Exhibits are free to everyone. Becoming a member of THELMA entitles you to a discount on concert tickets, films and classes. Members also learn first who is coming to perform at THELMA and may purchase tickets before the general public. “Membership demonstrates your support for your community by allowing THELMA to fulfill its mission of creating experiences not otherwise available in the area,” said Kevin Miller, THELMA executive director.

and bike and walking trails. Over the past couple of years the City of Waupun has worked to expand bike and walking trails throughout the community. A very popular boardwalk trail off of Meadowview Park was completed in 2013, and a second phase of trail construction began in 2014 – this time, in the vicinity of the Rock River and the Rock River Intermediate School. Work on this 3,100-foot section

of trail is expected to wrap up in the spring of 2015. Recreation and quality of life experiences are abundant in the city of Waupun, including Celebrate Waupun Festival and Waupun Fine Arts Concerts in the Park in July, Truck-NShow in August, Volksfest German Ethnic Festival in September, and ongoing events in the historic City Hall Auditorium.

For a list of coming events, visit WaupunFestivals.com.

City of Waupun reports growth in downtown From property cleaning to million-dollar remodeling projects, Waupun citizens and visitors saw a flurry of activity in the city’s downtown in 2014. Fox Valley Savings Bank took on a substantial remodeling project, with improvements to the bank’s interior including more private customer conference areas, safe deposit boxes, and a new Community Room that is available for meetings and gatherings. Exterior enhancements included a second drive-up lane, ATM access and a complete redesign with a higher roof line, new colors, and signage. East Main Street welcomed a pair of new and diverse businesses this past year including Tattered: A Unique Boutique, a unique local small business that is family owned and operated specializing in vintage, retro, industrial salvage, antiques and oddities; and Pretty Turtle Boutique, offering handmade clothing and accessories, tutus, custom embroidery and handmade gifts. On nearby Fond du Lac Street, a new store called The View Point provides its customers with something new and different each time they visit this store, specializing in re-purposed items and antiques. Properties along the 400 block of East Main Street were cleaned, tuck-pointed and painted as part of a multi-year project taken on by Waupun’s Community Development Authority. This was done in effort to help maintain and preserve our historic downtown properties through the use of tax increment financing. The mayor, Community Development Authority and Business Improvement District look forward to working with our businesses on continued improvements in 2015.

City of Waupun: Business and industry growth recognized

In the summer of 2014 Waupun welcomed its newest hotel, AmericInn Hotel & Suites, to the city. This beautiful, modern hotel is locally owned by Andy Glewen and is situated on Shaler Drive, just off of Highways 151 and 49 on the city’s east side. This area of Waupun has been home to a number of new developments in recent years, including Taco Bell and the state-of-the-art Waupun Baseball Complex, and the progress continues. Construction of a new 2-unit commercial property on nearby Washington Avenue began in September 2014. The new facility is now home to Jimmy John’s and High Tails Pet Supply store. Along Highway 26, on the south side of town, the state’s largest transportation provider, Lamer Bus Lines, constructed a new bus service facility and remodeled an existing office building to meet the needs for its new Waupun home. In addition to the new developments, several long-standing businesses found 2014 to be the perfect year for reinvesting in the community in the form of business additions and renovations. WTCX and Radio Plus Stations recognize viewers as interactive players When local radio station WTCX aired its first broadcast 20 years ago, the focus was delivering classic rock and roll music to Fond du Lac listeners and selling advertising. Now living in a world where favorite music can be download onto cell phones and the latest Internet gadgets, radio’s place has changed. WTCX is rolling with the changes. “We’re much more conscious of our community, its needs and how we can deliver messages that impact, teach and create buzz,” says General Manager Terry Davis. The news department continues to break local stories on air, but also posts them on social media. “Fond du Lac wants to know the latest and we need to be where they are. Our local sports coverage now includes live video stream coverage. WTCX exclusively video captured Springs student Zach Hintze’s 61-yard field goal that boasts over 100,000 YouTube views,” said Davis. WTCX is proud to host the Game Plan promotion which brings two Green Bay Packers players to Fond du Lac after select home games. Players Josh Sitton and Micah Hyde rotate co-hosting this show and bring along a fellow Packer of their choice. Game Plan veterans include Eddie Lacy, Aaron Rodgers, Deanna Favre, Donald Driver and John Kuhn. WTCX and fellow stations Sunny 97-7, AM1170 and the Great 98 have developed a modern, broad-based advertising approach for advertisers.

Eddie Lacy of the Green Bay Packers, Gregg Owens and Keith Heisler, WTCX Game Plan Hosts, Josh Sitton, Green Bay Packer and Game Plan Celebrity Co-Host.

“Our listeners aren’t just our listeners anymore,” says Davis. “They’re our viewers and interactive players as well.” Radio 360 is a concept developed to give businesses even more exposure. Advertisers can purchase packages that include online website mentions, live video website as well as our live-streamed high school sports games, mentions on the electronic message board and interactive apps on cell phones. Radio Plus, the name of WTCX’s parent corporation, does what its name implies. Radio plus more. In a world of rapid changes and information at an instant, Radio Plus stations are committed to delivering unbiased, local news and information, music, local sports and interactive contests and prizes. Radio Plus is located at 210 S. Main St. It can be reached at (920) 924 – 9697 or online at radioplusinfo.com.

Habitat Celebrates 25 homes in Fond du Lac County To many, home ownership is considered part of the American dream. Unfortunately for many people across the United States and the world, home ownership is a dream that is not always easily attainable. In 1976, Habitat for Humanity was founded in Georgia to help combat homelessness, poverty and inadequate housing. Habitat continued to grow and by 1996 the movement had reached Fond du Lac County. For 19 years, Habitat for Humanity of Fond du Lac County has been working to help people realize the American dream of home ownership. This year, Habitat celebrated construction and completion of our 25th home in Fond du Lac County. Built for Sarah and Taylor Schanilec and their two children, Mason and Liliana, the home, located at 141 Hamilton Place took four months and 383 volunteers who contributed more than 2,300 hours to complete the project. Since completion of Sarah and Taylor’s home, Habitat has continued to plan for future homes in Fond du Lac County. A recent lot donation in Ripon has opened the doors for a third build in the city to be started in the coming years in addition to three other lots owned by Habitat in Fond du Lac. In April, ground will be broken on the 26th Habitat home in Fond du Lac

This began in 2002 with the inception of the 21st Century Learning Center programs. Over the course of the past decade, club programs have focused on homework help and tutoring with caring adult volunteers and club staff. Our Project Learn program focuses on homework completion and preparedness for the coming school days. Recently, the Club made a commitment to take educational support to a deeper level in partnership with the Fond du Lac School District, starting with reading proficiency. National studies show that the single most identified factor in determining success through high school and eligibility for post-secondary education is reading proficiency by the end of third grade. Based on a population study conducted with the Fond du Lac School District, just 21 percent of third-grade students were considered proficient (defined by being at the 75th percentile or better) based on the Spring MAP test. This means that nearly 80 percent of students in the district need support to become proficient readers.

Club “grandparent” Mary Fleischman participates in a reading program with Club member Elias Bonnell during the Boys & Girls Club Afterschool Program at Chegwin School.

By partnering on this initiative, there is access to resources that neither organization can provide on its own. Utilizing MAP scores, they are able to gauge the value of programs provided. The MAP assessment creates a personalized assessment experience by adapting to each student’s learning level and identifies proficiency in skill levels in a single subject, and scores growth. According to the data we collected during a MAP study of Boys & Girls BOYS & GIRLS CLUB continued on page D8

Mahala’s Hope transforms lives through equine therapy Specializing in equine experiential learning, a process which involves interactions between participants and horses, Mahalas’s Hope strives to encourage healing, promote wellness and increase self-awareness. Our programs provide an innovative setting in which the staff and participants can identify and address a range of emotional and behavioral challenges. In addition to the problems of alcohol addiction we are facing the growing epidemic of opiate addiction in our communities and state. Mahala’s Hope plays an active role in providing

a much needed treatment option for those who have completed primary treatment and want a unique and innovative approach to their continued recovery. Utilizing equine experiential learning, nature and education we provide trauma sensitive treatment which can create a reparative experience for the participant. This has been an exciting year of growth for Mahala’s Hope. Attendance increased in our current programs and we piloted new programs; a continuing care group for women with substance dependence and trauma in-

corporating equine experiential learning. The second pilot program was established for first responders and their experience of secondary trauma. Mahala’s Hope is very committed to assisting those with secondary trauma to come to a place of healing. Many people in the helping profession are impacted by their work and it is our wish to assist members of our communities to care for themselves while caring for others. Between June of 2013 and 2014, donor’s investments aided in the following fields: a full time director was

hired; collaborative programing with three separate counties; 178 participants received services (groups, individuals); 2500 professionals were trained in trauma informed care practices. Through presentations we have collaborated with new providers interested in our work. We could not have accomplished all of this without our volunteers and donors and we are very grateful to you. Mahala’s Hope is a 501 (c) 3 organization. For information, call Director Sandy Hardie, Director at (920) 904-0444 or visit mahalashope.com.

FOTPP and the founding group, the Taylor Park University, as well as “Friends” partnering agencies and individuals, have helped preserve the historic value of the park and pool and kept the park and pool viable as a fun, healthy place to go that will be preserved for future generations. The Blues Concert, FOTPP’s largest fundraising event of the year, will be held on Feb. 28 at the Elk’s Club. For tickets, call Wendy Petak at (920) 322-1975.

Club regular attendees, just 46 percent of Fond du Lac School District students maintained their reading proficiency score from spring to fall. Of the Boys & Girls Club members who attended the Summer Literacy Program at least 25 times throughout the 49-day program, 56 percent of participants improved their MAP score. Given the population of low-income and minority students that the Boys & Girls Club serves, this is quite an achievement versus the general population.

Taylor Park and Pool is bordered by Mary’s Avenue and Hickory, Emma and Ruggles Streets. The park can be rented for private events by calling the Recreation Department at (920) 929-2885.

The Boys and Girls Club is located at 90 W. Second St. It can be reached at (920) 924-0530 or online at kidsclubfdl.org.
