Art Inspirations The arts in Green Bay are alive and well. Never has this been more apparent to me than after my interview with Tina Quigley, executive director of Mosaic Arts, a non-profit organization which works to promote and strengthen Green Bay’s creative economy. Tina graces the cover of YOU Magazine’s first Arts & Entertainment issue and I couldn’t think of a better person to kick off what I hope becomes an annual edition. When we met back in March, Tina had just attended Arts Wisconsin’s Arts Day, a day-long event that gathers art advocates at the state capitol in Madison to network with peers and visit their legislators to ask them for investment in the arts locally and statewide. Invigorated and inspired, Tina couldn’t wait to share all the exciting things she had learned, people she had met and ideas she had conceived while at Arts Day. It feels good to know there are people like Tina working to grow the arts in our community, creating a better quality of life for all of us. To read more about Tina and her work through Mosaic Arts, turn to page 8. A strong creative community starts with individuals and that’s why your artistic endeavors are so important. In this month’s Mind & Spirit column (pg. 20), Melissa Gorzelanczyk offers tips to reinvigorate your artistic practice, whatever that may be. Confession: I felt like Melissa was speaking directly to me when I read her column. Taking the time to write just for me has gotten more challenging, but it’s also become so much more important too. When we maintain our artistic selves, we stay connected to a piece of our souls that is easily lost in the melee of everyday life. Whether you are juggling a full-time job and family or you’re newly retired and have forgotten what it’s like to have “me” time, Melissa’s column will help you discover ways to reignite that creative fire. Personally, I find inspiration when engaging with people who share my passion for creative work, whether it’s the written word, photography, cooking or painting. If you feel the same way, please join us on Wednesday, April 23 at La Vie Boheme in De Pere from 6 – 9 p.m. for an evening of complimentary wine tasting with Select Sellars, hors d’oeuvres courtesy of Indulge Catering and live entertainment by local musician Rob Anthony. We’d love this event to be an opportunity for local creatives to connect, share their big ideas with one another and celebrate the arts. I hope to see you there!

Tina Quigley is the kind of woman who instantly puts you at ease. When she speaks to you, it feels like she’s divulging a secret, even if you’re only discussing the abysmal weather. Her laugh, which you will hear often, rings with mischievousness even when she’s just recalling something sweet her daughter said the night before. Her ability to elevate those around her suits Quigley well in her position as Mosaic Arts executive director, a position that depends on her capacity to coalesce. “We want to connect artists with buyers, performers with patrons, funders with causes,” she says. “It’s our job to connect.” Mosaic Arts, a non-profit which launched on March 1 last year as the result of a merger between the Northeastern Wisconsin Arts Council and Arts Events, Inc., supports and promotes the work of artists and cultural organizations throughout the Greater Green Bay area.

This last year has been one of change for the organization and it looks as if that will continue in the months ahead. Mosaic is planning to relocate its office from the fifth f loor of the Bellin Building to a downtown Green Bay street level location. Quigley believes a new space will increase Mosaic’s visibility and accessibility to clients as well as the general public. From a new office downtown, Quigley would be able to overlook the streets of Green Bay – the very streets, in fact, that have staged some of the city’s most successful and beloved community arts events. Quigley has had a hand in coordinating many of them, whether through her current position or her prior roles within the arts community. She served as executive director of the Northeastern Wisconsin Arts Council for nearly a decade before taking over direction of Arts Events, Inc. in 2005 when it was formed as a subsidiary corporation of the Arts Council. Last year when the two organizations reunited as Mosaic Arts, Quigley accepted the role of executive director. “The job of Arts Events, Inc. was to raise money and help financially support the Arts Council so it could fulfill its mission of fostering and promoting arts in the community. Strategically, it makes much more sense for us to work as one organization,” Quigley explains. “We have the same leadership, mission and we can work more effectively and efficiently by combining resources.”

Local singer-songwriter Rob Anthony will provide live entertainment. Visit YOU Magazine on Facebook for more details.
Although it’s a young organization, Mosaic Arts has history. This is evident by the time capsule of art adorning Quigley’s office walls, namely framed Artstreet posters dating back to the festival’s inception in the early 1980s. Artstreet, now one of Mosaic Arts’ signature events, was founded by the Northeastern Wisconsin Arts Council in 1982 when it featured 79 local artists. The 3-day annual event has since grown to feature more than 200 artists from 20 states, Canada and England. Despite the shared history of the two organizations that comprise Mosaic Arts, the organization needed to redefine itself in the community. Quigley and her team spent the last year talking to arts organizations and working artists to better understand their most critical needs, which would in turn guide Mosaic’s mission. “The biggest needs for artists and arts organizations in our community are funding and awareness,” Quigley says. “Our events are a huge part of what we do and that will continue, but we are focusing time and resources on sharing the story that the art community has created.” The story Quigley refers to is that of the many art organizations and artists who need assistance in spreading the word about their work.

I feel that the community embraces the arts, which is evident at events like Artstreet, but there are some really well-kept secrets in Green Bay too.” - Tina Quigley “I feel that the community embraces the arts, which is evident at events like Artstreet, but there are some really well-kept secrets in Green Bay too,” Quigley says. “One of our primary goals and focuses is to help organizations further develop audiences and provide opportunities for visibility and participation.” Glenn Spevacek has worked with Quigley for the past five years and currently serves as president of the Mosaic Arts board of directors. He says Quigley is the right woman to lead the organization in the fulfillment of its new goals. “We named the organization Mosaic Arts because there’s a lot of elements to the arts community in Green Bay,” he says. “We need a spokesperson who will promote the whole spectrum of the arts and Tina is well-situated to do that. She’s not just doing this as a job. It’s part of her life.”
12 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | APRIL 2014
Spevacek says Quigley’s most vital assets are her perpetual optimism and can-do attitude. “She’s self-motivated and extremely focused. She definitely has a vision,” he says. “She knows what she wants, is hardworking and energetic as all get out. Her enthusiasm is definitely contagious.” Quigley, a De Pere native, says she owes much of her professional success to her father and mentor, Tim Quigley. She cut her teeth at Bayfest, a UW-Green Bay athletic department fundraiser that her father founded in 1980. At age 13, Quigley began working at the event. It eventually grew beyond the university and into a community-wide festival which Quigley managed from 2006 until the event was retired in 2011.

“I came from a family that was very engaged and involved in the arts, says Quigley who, with her husband Jeremy, now has two children of her own – 8-year-old son Quinn and 6-yearold daughter Amelia. “We made lots of trips to museums, I took art classes all through high school and played the tenor sax. The arts element was something that has always been an integral part of my life since little on. It’s something I’m very passionate about. This passion will fuel Quigley as she tackles what Mosaic has coming on the horizon. In addition to relocating to a new office, later this year Mosaic will launch expanded programming to include new educational opportunities for artists on a variety of topics from social media management to copyrighting work. Quigley also plans to offer more artist networking sessions to encourage collaborations, a must for a thriving art scene. “We want to tell the story of the arts in Green Bay. We’re not doing the art, Quigley says, “but we’re doing the connecting. Visit www.mosaicartsinc.org for more information.

Creating a Color Story Your home is a canvas waiting to be adorned By Meghan Diemel
16 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | APRIL 2014
Whether you are redecorating your home or purchasing a new one, a cohesive color palette throughout your space should take center stage. A coordinating color scheme helps the space feel larger, says interior designer Sheri Worth of design a la mode in Suamico. “So many people have an open-concept space now anyway; it’s a little easier to keep your main areas the same color and color scheme coordinated so it doesn’t look so choppy,” she explains.
Begin with a “Table of Contents”
The best place to start developing your home’s color story is with an assessment of what you already have. “The main thing is developing a plan before any palette is selected,” explains Maureen “Mimi” Robillard of MimiWorks in De Pere. “It’s the coordination of the inventory of what’s existing and what we’ll be reusing that’s going to be an integral part of the interior, and then working out from that.” While paint colors may be the first thing on the mind of a homeowner, they are the last thing that Robillard’s team decides. Designers must start with the options that are most limited and work from the ground up in a home. “There are 40 million paint colors, so the paint choice is our last selection made,” explains Robillard. “We’re limited as to the number of upholstery samples we can select from, so we start with our upholstery, then wood values and then our f looring choices.”
Make the details stand out
Neutrals are definitely a good idea in the main areas – the more public living spaces – like the living room and kitchen, says Worth. They allow for more creativity with accessories and fabrics.

your home <<< color story continued from page 17 “That way if your tastes change you can change out those items and not have to worry about the wall color,” she says. “Or if you are going to make a statement with your walls, then most of the other stuff should stay pretty neutral so you aren’t fighting one against the other.”
Accent strategically
Though using accent walls would appear to be a popular choice, the advent of the open-plan home can make it difficult to incorporate even if it’s part of the palette.
Pantone’s Color of the Year:
Radiant Orchid Radiant orchid is the 2014 Pantone color of the year. Believe it or not, with the right accessories it can work in a home. Ellis recently used two orchid-colored velvet sofas in a condo in Appleton, with a neutral color on the walls, to support 35 pieces of artwork. “The client has a gorgeous collection of artwork that is somewhat centered on that orchid color,” she explains. “They didn’t want khaki or beige or tan-colored furniture pieces; they wanted something a bit more playful.”
“With the open-concept, it’s extremely difficult,” says Robillard. “We’re maybe doing one concept wall out of 100 homes. We’re finding that because of the ceiling heights and natural lighting versus other lighting sources, the color changes anyway. A color in a master bedroom with 8-foot ceilings is going to look completely different in a 16-foot great room.” However, a coordinating color can be beneficial when it comes to what’s overhead. “The time we would probably bring in a different color would be for the ceilings, where we take the color we’re using for the walls and we go 50 percent lighter,” adds Bridgett Ellis, interior designer at MimiWorks. “That way it’s still the same color family and you’re not having a white-white ceiling.”

If you have stained woodwork, you want to pay attention to the tone in wood versus the color of paint you’re using, cautions Worth. “You don’t want anything too close because it’s nice to have a little contrast with the wood,” she says. “So if you have a real warm oak color, sometimes it’s nice to have a cooler color on the wall. It does more for the woodwork.”
The right color palette can act as a springboard for your home’s furniture and accessories, allowing them to truly shine. “You want to make sure that whatever color palette you go with, keep it consistent and keep it within the same color family,” concludes Ellis. “It almost acts as a backdrop so that way your furniture, your wall art, draperies, all of those things can really sparkle against the wall color and paint colors.”

Rekindling Your Creativity By Melissa Gorzelanczyk
What should you make? 20 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | APRIL 2014
This question surfaced for me five years ago. I’d just read a blog post on Zen Habits titled “How to Find Your Amazing Work.” Looking back now, I realize that post ignited my creativity, which had
become cool from all the to-do lists and responsibility and grown-up things. From there, my whole life became reborn.
Recommended Reading: ZenHabits.net by Leo Babauta
You might think that’s crazy— who changes their whole life based on one article, right? Yet that question—what should you make?—forced me to reevaluate. Dig deeper. I wanted something more from life. Maybe you know the feeling. Maybe part of who you really are is being neglected. The more I mulled the idea of amazing work, the more I knew: I wanted to write books again. Fast forward five years, add a lot of hard work and a little luck, and I find myself happier than I’ve ever been. Creatively, I am free. Am I saying everyone should quit their day job, as I did, to pursue something creative? No. Maybe. I don’t know. What I do know is that writing is an act of pure joy, just like scrapbooking or painting or playing mandolin might be for you. Whether you will make money creatively or not, rediscovering your creative passion will make life better. Like many people, I was too busy to realize this for a long time. This month, restore yourself with creativity. Rediscover what you love to do, even if you don’t plan to turn it into a career. Let creativity be a light. An escape! With so many things that drain us, we can fill life with things we have made. Better things. Things that inspire us. Art. Here are some ways to rediscover your creative passion:
Reflect on your childhood.
chose to do without supervision or guidance. Sadly, writing fiction was something I stopped as I become an adult. What have you stopped making? Whether it’s arts and crafts, poetry, photography, or simply enjoying other people’s art through reading and museums—your childhood has the best clues to find your amazing work. Like Babauta said in his blog post, the key to finding your amazing work is to start looking.
Work on something that matters.
I write books for teens, but within my stories are things that matter to me. For instance, “Arrows,” my forthcoming novel, speaks out against dating violence, which is something two of my sisters battled against. Should you write about dating violence? I don’t know. I do know the world needs more art that means something. Gut out that deeper theme in whatever you make. Let creativity share a part of who you are, and what you stand for.
Do interesting things.
Live a life worth writing about. Worth painting. Worth singing for. This is a great time of year to try something new. Get out and explore the world. Your muse is waiting.
Experiment.
I like to remind myself: “This is your life.” There will always be things and people we cannot control. The beauty of life is that you can choose your actions within everything you cannot change. You can write. You can paint. Make music, sing, bead, stamp, quilt, bend metal, plant f lowers. You can make something amazing.
What did you make for fun as a child? Writing was always a part of my life growing up, something I

The Stylish Artiste
Splashes of white for a sunny spring Story and photos by Kirsty Gungor of www.loveliesinmylife.com on location at the artgarage, Green bay As the earth slowly warms to sun bleached and nudges us outdoors once again, I’m eager for outfits swathed in colorless white and if not completely, then in more subtle pairings. White is clean and crisp and feels so fresh! I’ve styled several lovely ladies, all talented and passionate artists, in looks that are inspired by the arts that have molded and shaped them. Here are several ways to incorporate cool tonal whites into your warm weather ensembles.

Romantic Lace A poppy red dress makes a statement under a sheer lace frock, left unbuttoned as a sweet top layer. Vintage gold jewelry adds further romance to a look that feels perfect for our aspiring author, Genevieve Artel. Genevieve studied education and has a master’s degree in library science. She has been composing poetry for 20 years and is currently working on her third novel, a young adult dystopian romance.
Painterly Florals Sometimes a girl just wants to feel comfortable and boyfriend jeans are the epitome of stylish comfort, especially when dressed up with strappy summer heels. A bomber jacket becomes feminine in a chiffon f loral with an enchanting painterly print. Our artist, Danielle Schneider, teaches pre-kindergarten through 5th grade art in the Montello school district and started an after school art program for kids in the area. In her spare time Danielle paints and draws at home.

Festival Style Goes Country All country-loving girls adore their cowboy boots and in downtown Nashville, the perfect casual combo is cut-off denim shorts with those boots. Feather accents and a boho headband create a festival-inspired style for Tara Granquist, a female vocalist who started a successful local country band and has since expanded into original work with Nashville musicians. She placed in the top 30 in auditions for American Country Star last year in Nashville. Tara is also a registered medical sonographer with a passion for health and nutrition.

Dressed Up Tutu Dressing head to toe in shades of white is an adventuresome way to go, but not as tricky as it sounds. Nude paired with white has a sort of modern romance about it. Here a slim button up shirt tucks into a full tulle tutu, accessorized with a vintage beaded belt for that sparkle. Lime satin wedges with a wrap around ribbon are a perfect pairing for a ballerina. Kirsty Gungor is the director of Celebration Dance, a local Christian dance program. She studied ballet through the Royal Academy of Dance in South Africa and has been teaching dance for 20 years.
Graphic Prints An open weave sweater is a great transitional layer for springtime, especially when you’re eager to reach for your favorite summer dresses, and a cropped cut is lovely with a dress featuring a higher waistline. This dramatic and colorful print is a perfect match for our graphic designer Holly Lasee, who specializes in branding, print, and art direction and is currently design manager at Laugh Your Way America. Holly also does freelance work and hopes to open up her own design shop in the future. APRIL 2014 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | 27

YWCA Women of Vision Luncheon •
Fashion and passion unite at YWCA’s signature Women of Vision Luncheon, “Walking in My Shoes.” The event will be held at Lambeau Field on Tuesday, May 6 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The afternoon will be filled with laughs, giving, networking, inspirational stories and, of course, shoes! (Attendees are encouraged to wear the funkiest pair in their closets.) Keynote speaker Jessie Garcia, who has been a TV sportscaster for 20 years and was one of the first women in the country to host an NFL coach’s show, will address the group. Former TV anchor and philanthropist Marti Spittell Ziegelbauer will emcee the event. Building on the success of last year’s event, “Walking in My Shoes” will once again feature a fashion show highlighting the newest spring trends from Lady Savannah Boutique. Women will also get the opportunity to network while shopping the silent auction items. Funds from the event directly support the initiatives of the Women’s Empowerment Center within the YWCA. The Empowerment Center provides job training classes and opportunities to female jobseekers. The Center provides a three-week long work readiness class, resume development, interviewing basics, one-on-one mentoring, temporary employment at a local employer and the opportunity to secure a full time job that pays a livable wage. The YWCA’s Women of Vision group dedicates a portion of its spring luncheon program to recognizing a few outstanding community members who support women’s issues. If there is someone you wish to be honored at the luncheon, contact Silvija Jensen at 920-432-5581 ext. 121. Tickets to the luncheon may be purchased at www.ywcagreenbay.org
