you magazine staff

Hello, beautiful.

Publisher Scott Johnson Executive Editor amelia compton wolff

Something interesting happened while putting together this month’s magazine – something I didn’t expect to surface in a beautyfocused issue, if I’m being honest.

Advertising Director Steve Teofilo

As the issue began materializing, this idea of beauty began taking all sorts of forms: Au Naturale Cosmetics founder and cover woman Ashley Prange fills us in on how she creates makeup with meaning. Fashion contributor Kirsty Gungor captures the beauty of the often unglamorous life of a mother. Kari Geocaris, life coach and motivator, shares her confidence-boosting tips with mind and spirit contributor Melissa Gorzelanczyk. All of a sudden, the Beauty Issue got a lot deeper. The theme of beauty was emerging as a state of mind, rather than a shade of lipstick. It wasn’t something we intentionally set out to do. It just, sort of, happened. And I’m so glad it did. Maybe it’s all a coincidence, but I think there is more to it than that. I think it is evidence that beauty has never really been about mastering the fishtail braid (although kudos to you if you have). True beauty has always been about how you feel, think and act. Beauty is always there. We just need to choose to see it. I happen to think YOU Magazine readers are some of the hottest out there, so I would love to know your surefire methods for feeling beautiful. Post a picture on Instagram with the hashtag #YOUMagrealbeauty and let us know! Here are a few of mine: Special splurges: Whether it’s regular facials, moisturizer or lingerie, splurge on that one thing that might seem unnecessary, but makes you feel fabulous. Yoga: Never do I feel more sure of myself than during a killer yoga class. Turn to page 30 to see our CYLG photos from Definitely De Pere’s free Yoga in the Park, then give it a try on August 20 and 27.

you spotlight story By Amelia Compton Wolff Photos by Mike Peters on location at Au Naturale Cosmetics, Green Bay Hair by Caroline Quinn and makeup by Patricia Dufek of Mint Salon, Green Bay

Ashley Prange is a bit of an enigma. At first glance, you might think the petite 32-yearold with long blonde hair and blue-green eyes grew up on a surfboard somewhere off the West Coast. Then she speaks, and her East Coast intellect and intensity become undeniable. But when she works, there’s no mistaking Prange’s Midwestern roots. The Green Bay native and St. Norbert College grad spends early mornings and late nights in her lab, concocting and creating her line of organic, vegan, cruelty-free makeup. “At the end of the day, everything is covered in glitter, and it’s just, like, so magical,” Prange says with a wave of her hand and a sly smile. Prange is the founder of Au Naturale Cosmetics, recently setting up shop in Green Bay’s Main Street Commons, and there is something magical about it. In the “powder room,” shelves up to the ceiling are lined with mason jars containing a rainbow of naturally colored pigments used to create lipstick, blush and eye shadow. A team of Prange’s employees sits around tables, laughing and talking, as they batch products and package orders to be shipped that day. But Prange is the first to acknowledge the less glittery side of business ownership. “I’m grateful for little things like the postman bringing up my packages and not losing them so I’m trying to find them in the ether at 11 p.m.,” Prange says, obviously from experience. “It’s an emotional rollercoaster, but then you just have to buck up and persevere. This business has definitely humbled me.”

their diets and a green lifestyle. I love it that they want to have it translate into their makeup too.” Prange spent eight years working for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in Washington, D.C., whose mission is to ensure the safe use of radioactive materials for people and the environment. The knowledge she gained and people she met while working at the NRC proved vital in the creation of Au Naturale’s products. It was while she was living in D.C. that Prange got an insider look at federal regulations of the beauty industry, or lack thereof.

Clean Cosmetic Dream Prange used her personal savings to launch Au Naturale four years ago after becoming frustrated with the harsh chemicals in leading makeup brands that irritated her sensitive skin. She realized she wasn’t alone in her desire for natural, professional-grade makeup so Prange began blending powder formulations using organic ingredients in her Vitamix blender. Eventually she was able to develop and formulate a product line without any harmful, toxic ingredients, chemicals, parabens or heavy metals. “Your skin is your largest organ. Sixty-five percent of what you put on top of it ends up in your body just like food,” she says. “People are cluing into

“There hasn’t been any legislation since the 1930s when companies were putting rat poison in mascara and women were going blind,” she says. “That’s the last thing regarding safety for cosmetics that has been made into law. “To this day my former life [in D.C.] has played a massive role in how we operate as a company that cares,” Prange continues. “We are trying to do more than just make makeup. We’re trying to make the beauty space a little safer, raise awareness and support everyone in our supply chain, even our competitors.”

Au Naturale products are available at retailers throughout the world, but most of their sales are made online. Prange says this year Au Naturale products will be available in more brick and mortar establishments and she plans to hire additional staff to support the growing wholesale business. Relocating Au Naturale to Prange’s hometown made sense because many of her products’ ingredients are already being sourced from Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest. In addition, Prange appreciates the work ethic and sense of community Northeast Wisconsin offers. “When I’m away on business trips, people are here working until 9 p.m. just because they want to make it right. That wouldn’t happen anywhere else, come on,” she says. “The guys downstairs help you move things. It’s so refreshing. People smile and ask how you’re doing. It feels like you have a team.”

Meaningful Makeup In an industry all about appearances, Prange’s mission is anything but surface level. “The most meaningful times for me is when I get emails from customers who have cancer and they can’t wear anything else,” Prange says. “They find Au Naturale because our ingredient list is so

pure that they can wear it. If I’m having a bad day, I just read those emails.” Prange says she sees makeup as a tool for creativity, one with which women have been experimenting for centuries. She hopes Au Naturale provides a creative outlet for women, just in a safer way than it has been historically. “I’m excited by what we are doing because it does help people. It’s not just vanity. People are actually touched by the product,” she says. “It’s important to me to have something to go to in beauty that’s safe.” In addition, Prange feels strongly that her company should have a positive global impact.

Au Naturale partners with several charities including Zambia Open Community Schools (ZOCS), an organization Prange cofounded while attending St. Norbert College. In the sub-Saharan country of Zambia, few children receive an education and girls and orphans are often the last in line. However, they are given priority access to ZOCS schools. Ten percent of Au Naturale’s profits help fund ZOCS, and Prange plans to grow her outreach as the company continues to grow. Empowerment is a theme that resurfaces often as Prange discusses the ethics that drive her and Au Naturale’s mission – empowering consumers with knowledge, women with safe beauty products and everyone to live a healthier life. “There are easy fixes to every little facet of our lives which equates to a healthier existence, so let’s just get after it because we can. We have the power,” she says. “Change is actually easy to make. You just have to get people excited, then anything’s possible.”

Mirror therapy. Look in the mirror and say loving affirmations like, “I love you,” “I am enough,” “I am beautiful.”

“No one will ever date me. My breasts are too small, my eyes are too big.” You’ve probably told yourself similar stories. As someone who believes strongly in the power of intention, which is defined as “an act or instance of determining mentally upon some action or result,” I see now how damaging thoughts like that can be. In time, you realize that it takes more than makeup, fashion and a boob-job to feel your best. And feeling your best is essential. If you feel good, you can take on the world, right? Or maybe at least next Monday. Now that I’m older, I don’t feel ugly as often as I used to. My eyes are big, but they are also where my husband looks when he says “I love you.” My body isn’t perfect, but it is strong and carries me through life. If you struggle with self-doubt about how you look, how smart you are or what you can accomplish, Kerry Geocaris of Green Bay, Life Coach & Motivator at Simply Kerry, has advice to help you believe in yourself again. She’s dedicated her career to aiding people in the creation of healthier, happier lives. Put on some confidence, ladies. You are beautiful in so many ways.

Recall powerful times. Think about times when you felt like the best version of yourself or when you were “on fire.” Channel those times so you can stand in your power.

Books to Try Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual by Michael Pollan When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times by Pema Chodron. You’re Not Going Crazy … You’re Just Waking Up! The Five Stages of the Soul Transformation Process by Michael Mirdad Life Colors: What the Colors in your Aura Reveal by Pamala Oslie

Words Exchange “I am not good enough.” to “I am enough.” “I should.” to “I want.” “I can’t.” to “I am able.” “I’m fat.” to “I have stored energy to release.” “I’m ugly.” to “I am beautiful just the way I am.” “I am stressed.” to “I am busy.” “I don’t have time.” to “I will make time.”

Be childlike. Remember the things you absolutely loved doing as a child and start doing them again. Play, be creative, move your body, use your imagination, etc. You will start feeling more alive, inspired and free.

Practice good self-care. Our bodies are meant to move. You need to move and get the energy f lowing. Nourish yourself with good food and a lot water.

Practice good posture. When you are sitting low or slouching, you will feel low. It’s that simple. Sit up and stand straight to improve your mood.

Challenge yourself. Take a class, read a blog every day, train for a race, or take up a new hobby. Your confidence will improve each time you learn something new or overcome a challenge.

Accept compliments. Receiving is just as important as giving. It will boost your confidence and provide others the opportunity to experience giving out joy

Meditate. We have been trained to look outside of ourselves for love and acceptance. The only person who needs to love and accept you is you. Meditation allows you to go within and accept your thoughts for what they are. For guided meditation, try an app like Centered State, Calm, or Guided Mind. www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | 15

BUILDER SPOTLIGHT: INTEGRITY HOME Alysha Zoeller has always had a creative streak. Today she is putting it to good use at Integrity Home Builders, a secondgeneration family business founded in 2003 by her parents, Pat and Debbie. “When I was younger I would always draw exteriors of homes for fun,” Alysha says. “Growing up in a construction family, it runs in your blood.” Pat Zoeller, owner and president of the company, has been in the construction industry for more than 25 years. He has worked in many aspects of the building industry and eventually decided to fulfill his dream of becoming a general contractor.

Both Debbie and Alysha are licensed relators, making Integrity Home Builders an all-in-one company. The team can help sell an existing home, purchase the correct lot, locate a short term rental during construction and, most importantly, build a high quality home. Working closely with clients to customize the home of their dreams is one of Integrity Home Builders’ main priorities. They strive to provide customers with a quality home and to make it an enjoyable, stressfree experience. “I work with architects to draw

E BUILDERS plans,” Alysha says. “My mom and I collaborate on the design from the flooring and light fixtures to the siding and roof. My dad is out on the job every single day to make sure the process runs smoothly. One of us is there keeping in contact with the customer and making sure everything is right.” Amanda Kabat and her husband Seth worked with Integrity Home Builders to design their new home in De Pere. They collaborated with Alysha and Deb to create a colonial-style home with painted cabinets and woodwork throughout. The home is equipped with several unique features including a walk-in pantry with a cabinetstyle front and specialized lighting.

The Kabats enjoyed working with Integrity Home Builders because they were always patient and helpful. Amanda says she was impressed with the quick responses she would receive whenever she had a concern or question during the building process. “They get down to business when we need to, but they keep things light when it gets tense,” Amanda says. “They are all so super welcoming, like being with a family friend.” While she enjoys the entire construction process, Alysha’s favorite part is seeing all the building materials turned into a home. “My favorite part is seeing the completed project,” she says. “You see them dig the foundation and it’s great to know that everything came together.”

a summer morning: We’ve stolen away from the chaos, just her and I while the boys play at camp, and I’m almost giddy at the thought of a quiet coffee date where we’ll sit and page animatedly through magazines (she loves them too). Instead she’s fallen asleep on my shoulder, head gently tucked into the curve of my neck. Not even the delicious fog of coffee or the hushed hum of conversation wakes her. I order my drink and sit at a table by the window, preferring to stay within its golden circle. She nestles into me as I slowly digest the images on the magazine pages in front of me, an artist always looking for inspiration. This is my normal and to me, it’s beautiful. I’ve been a mom for almost eleven years; it’s my main identity. I’ve experienced that euphoric introduction to four tiny babies placed gently on my chest, always turning toward my voice and staring into my face. It’s a wild ride raising a family. Years of nursing a cooing infant, giggling with a drooling toddler, crying alongside a tantrum-ing child. Then there’s the proud mommy moments when I’m bubbling over the small things, most recently at little ones becoming independent or big kids suddenly witty and smart dinner time companions. Time is not lost on me (it absolutely moves faster every year!) and I’m thankful for those walks hand-in-hand and the head on my shoulder, likely to eventually fade. But there are also those achingly long days consumed by arguments and struggles, both abysmal and inconsequential. It’s good to remind myself to take a deep breath in those moments, to enjoy them for what they are and not let these incredible days rush by without me being fully present, even when they’re difficult...or just plain ordinary. As a creative person I’m not usually content with ordinary and I grow tired with the mundane. But I’ve endeavored to find the dazzling in my every day. A laugh, a kiss, a chubby cheek, a mismatched outfit, a wild curl. Being a mother is the most beautiful experience I’ll ever have. And already, these 11 years are a capsule of millions of moments that I’ll never forget and have changed me forever. Every child and every day is unique, with its own shining possibilities. My ordinary life is made more brilliant by my children. They make it beautiful.

golden glow Sun-kissed skin to send summer out with a bang

By Amelia Compton Wolff

Some of us are hanging on to the last days of summer with a death grip while others are ready to welcome fall with open arms. Regardless of where you stand, one of late summer’s hottest looks is safely sun-kissed skin that will have everyone thinking you spent the better part of the season on a yacht off the coast of Italy. Here’s how it’s done:

strobing “There is a new trend called ‘strobing,’” says Victoria Stencil, stylist at Salon Fifty Four in Green Bay. “It’s pretty much replacing contouring with more of a natural, younger look. The goal of contouring is to change the shape of your face to make it look thinner and f lawless. Strobing doesn’t try to change your face shape. Strobing embraces your face.”

#bothsidesarebeautiful Mint Salon will host a photography installation, #bothsidesarebeautiful, as part of the Downtown Green Bay Inc. Gallery Nite on September 17 from 5 – 9 p.m. The hashtag #bothsidesarebeautiful began trending on social media as women posted images of their faces online – one side with full makeup, the other completely makeup-free. “We wanted to show that no matter which look you choose, even if it’s a different choice every other day, you are beautiful,” says Caroline Quinn, owner of Mint Salon. Visitors will use fans to cover one side of the photos at a time for a more striking effect. Mint Salon partnered with Scott Eastman of Great Scott Images to create the photography series featuring the half-face trend. “His photography is genuine, and his true-life, low edit style was a great match for this installation,” Quinn says. To view the installation, visit Mint Salon at 1236 Main St, Green Bay, from 5 – 9 p.m. on September 17.

your style Rather than emphasizing lowlights and shadows the way traditional contouring does, strobing puts all the focus on highlighting. This look is perfect for the dog days of summer because it doesn’t take much time, product or skill to achieve, Stencil says. Try applying highlighter where the sun hits your face – the center of the forehead, bridge of the nose, cupid’s bow, brow bones, cheekbones and chin – then skip the lowlighting all together. “Be careful not to add too much shimmer,” Stencil cautions, “as there is a fine line between looking dewy and looking oily.”

safe sun As summer goes on, it’s easy to get lazy when it comes to sun protection. Recommit yourself to a safe skin routine and be totally on trend at the same time. “Safe skin is in,” says Patricia Dufek, makeup artist at Mint Salon in Green Bay. “Load up the SPF – in your daily moisturizer, not foundation.”

your ideal you awaits

Dufek also recommends giving self-tanners a try. For those of you with orange, streaky self-tanner PTSD, she assures these products have come a long way. “They aren’t your mama’s self-tanners anymore. Years of ‘try, try, and try again’ have brought a whole wave of glorious smell-free, natural looking self-tanners,” she says. Dufek recommends the St. Tropez line of sunless tanners for face and body.

tools of the trade The lazy, hazy days of summer’s end call for minimal makeup. Dufek suggests keeping things simple and light with multi-purpose products that can transition into fall. “A great pop of color on the lips, mascara and cream blush, and you’re good for any temp,” Dufek says. “Au Naturale [in Green Bay] has amazing blush sticks that you can use for lips and cheeks.” When it comes to natural-looking skin, Dufek’s go-to tool is the Beauty Blender, an egg-shaped makeup sponge that eliminates foundation lines and steaks. “It blends and applies all at once for a seamless-airbrush effect, no matter the foundation you use,” she says.

Three Tips for Gorgeous Canvas Prints 1. Select the location where your canvas print will hang. This will

help you determine what size canvas print to order. A canvas print is a true statement piece, so it’s easier to fit the desired wall space than try to fit the canvas to a wall after the fact.

2. Start with high quality images. Choose images that are high-resolution, sharp and reflect true color. Quality images will make for the most professionallooking finished product.

savvy

3. Consider cropping. When print-

ing on canvas, the image will wrap around the edge of the frame. This is what gives it a seamless, 3D effect. It’s best to select an image with plenty of background space around the edge, so you avoid any unwanted cropping.
