On With the Show! Third Avenue Playhouse Presents Fresh Offerings this Summer BY ED HUYCK
Running a theater wasn’t necessarily the plan when James Valcq and Robert Boles moved to Door County, but when the opportunity came to take over the dayto-day operations of Third Avenue Playhouse (TAP), they jumped at the chance. Along with programming concerts, local performances and educational events, the pair also started a new company to use the theater’s intimate, 84-seat theater. TAP is 28 | YOUR KEY TO THE DOOR | 2016
also home to a 250-seat main stage that hosts concerts, films, Stage Kids productions and other events. “The results have been—and sometimes surpassed—what we expected. The way we got there I would not have foreseen. There are no rules on how to do it. All you can do is the best that you know how to do,” Boles says. “Every day is still an adventure,” Valcq adds. Three shows make up this summer’s season. It starts with Isaac’s Eye ( June 30-July 23), a recent work by award-winning New York’s Lucas Hnath, who has quickly risen in the ranks of young American playwrights. Valcq and Boles first heard of the show when it played at a theater in Illinois. Valcq didn’t see the production, but was intrigued by its modern-day take on physicist Isaac Newton. He found a copy and read it with interest. “A month later, I picked it up again. I couldn’t get it out of my head. It was so unique and different. It was a fresh take on a historical figure, done in very contemporary terms,” Valcq says.
performing arts
The play tackles the story of Newton and his scientist mentor, Robert Hooke, but tells it with a decidedly contemporary voice. The approach earned the show plaudits with productions around the country. That’s followed by Madame Sherry, a turn-of-the-20thcentury musical that has long intrigued Valcq. That show runs from July 28 through Sept. 3. “Ever since I was a kid, I would check out scores for any musical, and play through them at home. This one I never played as a kid because they didn’t have it at the Milwaukee Public Library,” he says. “When I moved to New York, on my first trip to the New York Public Library as a card holder, I found it on the shelf. I played through it and found it delightful. “I never thought I would do it, but guess what? I run a theater now,” Valcq adds. Still, performing the show would have been difficult. While the score was relatively easy to find, the script was long out of print and hard to find. That changed when Valcq finally put his hands on the original text. “It was really funny,” he says, noting that the show’s humor would still work with a modern audience. “I decided to take a crack at it,” he adds. The 1910 musical follows a man whose wild lifestyle runs afoul of his benefactor. It takes a madcap dash across New York and onto a swank yacht, to set things right. The season ends with the venerable The Gin Game (Sept. 8-Oct. 16). The comedic drama — made famous by late Hollywood actors Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy — centers on an unlikely friendship at a nursing home. “It becomes a battle of wits between these two very different people, which is complicated by the fact that she, who has never played cards before, wins every hand,” Valcq says. All of the shows offer fresh opportunities for performers, which has made the theater popular with local and regional actors. “We are an actors’ theater. With 84 seats, it is all about the interplay between the audience and the actors. All of these shows come alive when we

begin to picture who we would like to be in them. We got our first choices for these roles for the whole season,” Valcq says. The quality has been noticed. One of the 2015 productions, I Love a Piano, landed on the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s top 10 productions of the year list. Along with the professional productions, TAP offers educational programs, such as the youth-centric Stage Kids program and a more recent one targeting adults. This spring, they also produced The Laramie Project with a group of local high school performers. That outreach has had a strong impact. “One of the students (we worked with) started a theater club at her high school,” Boles says. “It is very gratifying to watch them grow.” All of this contributes to TAP’s place in the local theater ecology. “There are three other wonderful theater companies up here and each have their own focus. How can we differentiate ourselves from them?” Boles asks. “We also recognize that our audience here is so diverse. They come from all different backgrounds. It is a microcosm: People come from Chicago or Minneapolis or Milwaukee or from the local rural communities. We want to reach as many different sensibilities as we can.” Third Avenue Playhouse is located at 239 N. 3rd Ave., Sturgeon Bay. Cana Island Lighthouse light up the night. Photo by Mike Brisson.
Star search! Get Ready for a Peninsula Night-Sky Adventure BY JENNIFER WEST
On some nights, especially in summer when warm breezes blow and crickets sing their evening songs, magic happens. It happens as the sun dips below the horizon and as the first dim stars pepper the young night sky. It happens as light disappears and the dark blues of dusk turn to black; as the Milky Way spins and as constellations watch us from the heavens. 38 | YOUR KEY TO THE DOOR | 2016
For it is then we feel small, and the world becomes impressively large and ancient. Night sky viewing has captured the fascination of mankind since the beginning of time. There’s just something about that large dark canvas mixed with twinkling stars and bright planets that takes our breath away. And in Door County, the wide open spaces and views across the water make it even more spectacular. On a clear night, you can soak in the starlight and maybe, if you’re lucky enough, watch the Northern Lights dance across the lake. While visiting the Door, start your stargazing adventure with the Door Peninsula Astronomical Society. The organization hosts monthly viewing nights at the Leif Everson Observatory in Sturgeon Bay as well as summer programs at Whitefish Dunes and Potawatomi State Parks.
nightsky
During those events, you can take a peek through a telescope and get tips from society members. “We try to give (visitors) a look at certain things depending on what’s out,” says David Udell, president of the organization. “Usually we’ll look at a nebula or a galaxy. People get a chance to look through a variety of telescopes and look at star charts.” If you’d like to get away and try a solo excursion, the Door’s many parks are your best bet. Udell says the Astronomical Society is working on gaining a Dark Sky Place designation for Newport State Park, which sits at the tip of the peninsula. Such designations are given by the International Dark-Sky Association to areas with pristine night skies. If you enjoy camping and night sky viewing, this is your spot. “To get a (Dark Sky) designation is pretty significant,” he says. “As our technology has grown and our light pollution has worsened, a lot of kids growing up today won’t see the Milky Way unless they get to an area where we preserve the night sky.” Head just north of Newport to Isle View Road near the Washington Island ferry for great views of the Milky Way. You’ll also be able to see Pilot Island and its lighthouse ruins. This location is heralded as one of the darker eastern facing night skies in the Door. Toward Bailey’s Harbor, visit Anclam Park or Baileys Harbor Ridges Park. Light pollution can be a bit of a challenge near the village, but at the same time, the quaint town offers a nice setting for night sky photographers. Just a short drive along Ridges Road will put you at Toft Point State Natural Area, where you’ll escape most of the village light. However, if it’s the elusive aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, you’re after, you’ll need a wide open view of the northern sky. Try Door Bluff or Ellison Bluff county parks for northward facing aurora skies. Both are relatively remote and include somewhat treacherous trail walking, which can be challenging, especially at night. If you want an easier access location that’s family friendly, Peninsula State Park is your best bet. The park features an observation tower, trails and many access points to the water. When it comes to viewing Northern Lights, just remember that conditions have to be perfect for auroras: You need clear skies and a whopping solar storm. If you’re new to aurora watching, follow the Great Lakes Aurora
Hunters on Facebook. Members from across the region post updates if the Northern Lights are out. Plus, they’ll offer helpful hints on photographing and viewing the nighttime phenomenon. Most county parks in the Door close at 11 p.m., so if you plan to stay late into the night, you’ll need permission from the county sheriff. Also, if you see stargazers in the area, turn your headlights off as soon as you are safely parked, so as not to disturb the dark scene. And have fun. The night sky can be amazingly addicting. It’s constantly changing, always challenging and forever fascinating. “As humans, we tend to get pretty full of ourselves unless we look up at the night sky and see how small we are,” says Udell. “You need to get out on a clear night and say, ‘Wow, this is what the night sky really is. It’s so much bigger than we are.”

Heritage Village and Crossroads Offer Summer of Fun, Education
BY KATHY STEEBS
Want to experience Door County history, up close and personal? The Heritage Village at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay is a perfect stop for history buffs, families and folks looking for a deeper understanding of this historic peninsula. The site, located just east of Hwy 42/57 at 2041 Michigan (County Hwy TT), showcases a collection of buildings—a village—that represents Door County as it was during the period from the 1850s to the early 1900s. Open seasonally—from late May through the end of September—the Heritage Village is operated and maintained by the Door County Historical Society (DCHS), which leases the land from Crossroads at Big Creek. According to DCHS Director Trudy Herbst, guided tours bring the buildings to life. “Our docents typically dress in costume and tell the background and history of each building,” says Herbst. There are currently 10 buildings; many are historic Door County structures that have been moved to the site, such the Vignes School, saved from demolition in 1995, and the Schopf House, former home of German immigrants Gus and Caroline Lautenbach. The building was moved to the village in 2005.
One historic structure, the Hanson Norwegian House, is located on its original site, which just happens to be on the Crossroads property. The Hanson Norwegian House, a log home hand-crafted in 1857 by Hans Hanson, is available for touring by appointment (with two days advance notice) or on certain festival days. Since acquiring the house, the DCHS has worked to restore it to its 1800s appearance. (Newly finished is a women’s craft room exhibit on the first floor of the house showcasing spinning and sewing artifacts.) The village chapel is a ¼ scale replica of the first church built in Door County, the Ephraim Moravian. The original was built in 1853 by the Reverend A.M. Iverson, a Norwegian immigrant. The village also features a general store, blacksmith shop/granary, fish house, privy and another historic family home, the Warren House. One of the newest additions is the Hand Tool Museum, which is being built by volunteers using wood HISTORY continued on PAGE 46

reclaimed from a local barn. Visitors who come on Thursdays during the summer can watch volunteers putting finishing touches on the Hand Tool Museum. “The volunteers are always willing to stop and talk with visitors about the history of the building and the tool displays,” says Herbst. Regular summer programs include an interpreter on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in July and August, who impersonates a character from the period and gives an in-depth commentary. “It varies depending on the season, but you might find the schoolmarm in the Vignes School or Mrs. Greene behind the counter of the Greene General Store,” says Herbst. Another regular program is the blacksmith demonstration on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. “We also have special programs for kids throughout July and August, from candle-making and calligraphy to learning how pioneers sewed and washed clothing and what kinds of musical instruments they used,” says Herbst. Details about children’s programs is available on the Heritage Village Facebook page and online at historicalvillage.doorcountyhistoricalsociety.org. Throughout the season, the Historical Village hosts festivals and various special programs (see sidebar). “We are very excited this year to be hosting— in collaboration with Crossroads at Big Creek— the John Muir and the National Park Service exhibit in August and September,” says Herbst. This traveling exhibit from the Wisconsin Historical Society marks the first time the Heritage Village has hosted such an exhibit. As you are touring the Heritage Village at Big Creek, especially on festival days, Herbst says, “Don’t be surprised if you happen upon a root beer float stand. It is a great way to cool off on a hot summer day!” Heritage Village is adjacent to Crossroads at Big Creek, a nature and learning center that offers marked trails for hiking and groomed cross country ski trails in the winter. There is a modern facility for programs and a wildlife diorama. And, on the outskirts of the property, away from city lights, is an observatory and astronomy center. Admission to Crossroads at Big Creek is free. l

A one-room schoolhouse, once the Clay Banks Town Hall, is another attraction, as is the Greene General Store with its candy counter and wood stove. The Peterson Granary, built in 1905 was moved from its site on Lily Bay Road. The Village is open from mid June through early October. Hours are 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. EPHRAIM Farther north, the Ephraim Historical Foundation oversees several museum buildings. These include the Anderson Barn History Museum, built in 1880 as a barn for the Aslag Anderson family. The barn contains a hands-on hayloft, a popular feature for children. The Anderson Store dates from 1858 and was in business for 100 years. The building is interpreted as a general store with original, authentic merchandise, including brand new shoes from 1910. The Iverson House on Moravia Street belonged to the minister who built Ephraim’s Moravian Church, and it served as a meeting hall until that church was built. In 1853, it was the earliest frame house in Northern Door. Pioneer Schoolhouse was a one-room center of learning for grades 1-8, and sometimes younger siblings came along. The building was rescued from demolition through the efforts of teacher Helen Sohns, who, in the 1940s, appealed to community leaders to preserve it. Behind the schoolhouse is the Goodletson Cabin, built in the 1850s by a family from Norway. It was originally constructed on Eagle Island (today’s Horseshoe Island) and probably was moved by skidding it across the ice. This year, opening day is June 17, Ephraim Heritage Day, and a free museum day. Walking and tram tours are available. Through August, hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. To 4 p.m. After Labor Day, hours are the same on Friday and Saturday, through the Columbus Day weekend. ELLISON BAY
Sister Bay’s Corner of the Past settlement, at the south entrance to the village on Highway 57, features The Old Anderson House Museum, a 19th-century farmhouse that was brought across the ice from Marinette in 1895. It hold heirlooms, artifacts and keepsakes from this area. Other buildings are a granary, a migrant worker’s cabin and old preacher’s cabin and loom house. Other attractions include a chicken coop, a Big Belle threshing machine, 100-yearold sawmill and the original mail sleigh that served the village. Opening is early June running through early October, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $5 per adult; children are free. Included in the admission is tours of 15 builds and use of a Discovery Pen—a new audio system for tours. There is a Farmers Market on Saturdays from late June through early October 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Also on Saturdays, starting in late June, the historical society will present heritage programs. Contact the Sister Bay Historical Society at (920) 854-7680.
And near the tip of the Peninsula, next to the Grand View property above Ellison Bay, is the Liberty Grove Historical Society museum site. There you’ll find a log cabin dating to 1882, the first German Lutheran Church in Door County, moved from Ellison Bay. Today used as a museum, the building contains artifacts from local fishermen and families in Liberty Grove. There are also two shacks on the property, historically used to lodge migrant orchard workers, moved from Woodcrest Road. One of the structures was used as a summer kitchen where women cherry pickers carved their names, with dates, on the rafters. Additionally, a restored corn crib, a granary and Pine Cottage, formerly part of the Liberty Park cottages, are on the site. The latter is being restored by a couple who spent their wedding night there. For information on events and hours, visit www.libertygrovehistorical.org. l

Modern-day
treasure hunters
Discover New Places with Geocaching BY JENNIFER WEST
“Did you check around that stump?” “Yep. Already looked there.” “It’s got to be really, really close,” I mumbled as I stared down at the little dot on my screen marking our target. “We’re probably standing right on top of it.” The canopy over our heads was thick, and satellites don’t play nice with mature hardwoods. The target on my GPS unit bounced around wildly with every step. We had been
at it for 20 minutes already, and our enthusiasm was waning. “Ha! I’ve got it,” my son yelled. “I’ve got it!” I scrambled over a fallen log and watched as he pulled a camouflaged peanut-butter jar from the hollow of a tree. He brushed it off, twisted the cover and pulled out a logbook. Small bits of swag clattered at the bottom of the jar, but we ignored them for now. We flipped through the logbook’s pages, looking at the dates, names and comments from those who had been here before us. And then we sat for a minute and soaked in where we were. It was a good day; we had had a good hike followed by a successful treasure hunt. We had found the geocache.
geocaching
THE SECRET SPORT For the uninitiated, geocaching is like modern-day treasure hunting. Participants use GPS-enabled devices to track down hidden caches that typically contain a logbook—and sometimes tiny toys or pencils or charms. The caches range in size from microcaches that are smaller than a film canister to 5-gallon buckets brimming with plastic toys and small baubles. Once found, a geocacher signs the log, takes a token (but only if adding something to the container) and replaces the cache in its hiding place for the next person to find. But the joy of geocaching isn’t really about the stuff in those containers; it’s more about the journey and the destination. “You definitely want to bring a camera with you,” says Jim Rudy, who also goes by “Labzone” in the geocaching community. “Some of the places you go to are just beautiful, like Cave Point.” Rudy, a resident of Sturgeon Bay, has placed more than 100 geocaches in Door County and logged more than 2,000 cache finds, which qualifies him as something of a geocaching expert. “You don’t need to invest a ton of money to do it,” he says. “People go on vacation, and they might not have a lot of money to spend after paying for hotels and food. So what do you do? You go geocaching.” Door County is home to more than 300 caches, most of which are located at places the cache owner wants others to see. Think scenic views, gorgeous hikes, lovely streams, picturesque shorelines and more. Typically, caches are on public property or placed with permission from a landowner. Sure, the hunt is fun, but really, at the end of the day, it’s about getting off the beaten path. Rudy says his most popular caches are at Door County’s state parks. He acts as “trail boss” for those caches, checking
in periodically to make sure the logbook is dry and that the cache stays where it’s supposed to be. Other popular Door County caches include a barn quilt series created by Jim Noll of Brussels, who goes by the handle “Brussels2.” “I was looking for some type of series to do in Door County,” he says. “There’s a barn quilt project in Shawano County, so I started doing a little research on it and found out there are about 50 [barn quilts] in Door County as part of a 4-H/ FFA project.” Thanks to Noll, Door County guests can take a tour of those barns while snagging geocaches along the way. “Most of the barn caches are easier finds,” he says, “They aren’t real complicated, so they’re good for beginners.” This treasure hunt game comes in many shapes and forms. Caches can range from a simple hidden container to more complex puzzles like gadget caches, which involve solving a combination lock. Rudy is even working on a new type of cache series called “geoart,” which means his series will form a shape when viewed on a map. There truly is room for everyone—young, old, beginner, expert—in this game.
HOW TO START If geocaching sounds like something you want to try, your first stop should be www.geocaching. com. You’ll find easy instructions, and you’ll be able to search for caches by location, size, difficulty and more. You’ll need some type of GPS-enabled device, maybe a backpack and probably a good pair of walking shoes. But most definitely, you’ll need to carry your sense of adventure. “We’ve found places we never knew existed right in our back yard,” Noll says. And that’s the real secret of geocaching. For more information, visit www.geocaching. com or the Wisconsin Geocaching Association at www.wi-geocaching.com. l 2016 | YOUR KEY TO THE DOOR | 57

stateparks
Door County is well known for its sweeping vistas, gorgeous shoreline, diverse woodlands and lovely rural scenes. So, it’s no wonder it’s home to five state parks—the most in any county in Wisconsin. Peninsula State Park, an expanse of 3,776 acres, was established in 1910, making it one of Wisconsin’s oldest state parks. Peninsula is not only the county’s most heavily used park, it is one of the state’s most popular publicly owned destinations. And it’s no wonder, with stunning overlooks of sparkling waters and nearby islands, 472 campsites, shallow, warm Nicolet Beach, boat launches, 20 miles of hiking and biking trails (including a rough terrain mountain bike path), plus an extensive road system for touring. It’s also the summer home to the professional Northern Sky Theater. The popular observation tower remains closed in 2016, but is slated to reopen, after repairs, in 2017. Peninsula Park is located off Highway 42 between Fish Creek and Ephraim. 920-868-3258. Potawatomi State Park is located on County PD off Highway 42-57 south of Sturgeon Bay. The half-mile-long Ancient Shores nature trail is a feature of the 17 miles of trails that wind through its 1,225 acres. The park offers a modern boat ramp with access to great fishing spots in nearby waters. Campers can find a peaceful retreat in the 123 campsites the park provides, many nestled up next to a mossy bluff. 920-746-2890. Rock Island State Park is the northern-most park in Door County. Day trippers can enjoy a spectacular sand beach and miles of hiking trails. The park is also popular among campers, with 40 sites, many located along the shore. A magnificent boathouse and the county’s oldest lighthouse are its primary structures. Outside of private boating, access to the island is via the passenger ferry Karfi from Washington Island. (Biking is not allowed on the island.) 920-847-2235.

stateparks <<< STATE PARKS continued from PAGE 67 Newport State Park lies near the tip of the peninsula’s mainland, at the end of County Road NP, north of Ellison Bay. Newport’s 2,373 acres are devoted to a wilderness credo, so there’s only one mile of road for motor vehicles. The road terminates near a sand beach and picnic area from which radiate more than 30 miles of hiking trails, including some 15 miles of unpaved trails suitable for off-road bikes. There are no overnight spaces for RVs, but hardy backpackers can enjoy 16 remote campsites, many on the shores of Lake Michigan. 920-854-2500. Whitefish Dunes State Park is found off County Road WD from Highway 57, south of Jacksonport. The towering sand dunes of this 863-acre park form the backdrop to one of the best-loved sandy beaches in the Midwest. A two-mile self-guided nature trail highlights the trees and unique plants native to this part of Wisconsin. Behind the ancient dunes are more than 13

miles of hiking trails to explore. This is a day-use park only, meaning there is no camping. 920-8232400. Ahnapee State Trail is a 48-mile trail that meanders through Kewaunee and Southern Door County. The level-grade, crushed limestone trail moves through evergreen glades, farmland, prairie and several quaint communities. The Ahnapee Trail is available for hiking, biking, horseback riding and, in the winter, snowmobile riding. No trail pass is required. Access, in Door County, is available just south of the city on Neenah Avenue and also Forestville Dam Park in southern Door County. Visit www.dnr.state.wi.us for information on visiting the Wisconsin State parks. Entry stickers for state parks are required. l

Door County is home to 19 diverse county parks
Sprinkled across the peninsula’s landscape are many spectacular public locations for sight-seeing, hiking, boating, swimming and other, sometimes unexpected, activities, including winter recreation opportunities.
The county has set aside over 948 acres of land for its 19 county parks. Within these parks is 12 miles of groomed trails, seven launching ramps, three swimming beaches and numerous picnic and playground facilities. Beyond this list of county parks is a multitude of other public-access locations such as town parks, nature preserves, Land Trust properties and a handful of other sanctuaries to discover. Cave Point, one the county’s most popular destinations, is a magical place located near Jacksonport. The park stands above a shallow sea cave and dazzling limestone bluffs along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. On windy summer days, freshwater mist fills the air as waves crash impressively against the rocky bluff. During the winter, cold spins the mist into whimsical art of icicles and frozen waves. A sizable and accessible gazebo can be rented to provide the perfect backdrop for weddings and special occasions. Another favorite that boasts a bit of adventure, as well as a dose of maritime history, is Cana Island Lighthouse near Baileys Harbor. Park the car and take a careful walk across the rock causeway for a rare opportunity to climb up a still-functioning navigation lighthouse tower. From the catwalk, enjoy an unbeatable view of Lake Michigan’s shoreline. The Door County Maritime Museum oversees the 140-year-old lighthouse, which is open to visitors daily May through October for a modest admission fee. Located in the remnants of the Leathem and Smith Company’s stone quarry north of Sturgeon Bay, George K. Pinney (formerly the Olde Stone Quarry) is surrounded by the impressive dolomite walls left behind from the quarry days. The setting is perfect for picnics, sunset watching and fishing. A modern six-lane boat launch and handicapped-accessible fishing pier provide access to the prime bass, northern and perch fishing waters of Green Bay. Scuba divers can enjoy exploring two shipwrecks, the Joseph L. Hurd and the Mueller, located in shallow waters adjacent to the park. Ellison Bluff, a State Natural Area near Ellison Bay, offers unparalleled views of Green Bay and is a spectacular place to watch a sun74 | YOUR KEY TO THE DOOR | 2016

set. Accessible hiking trails can be found under the forest canopy, and adventurous visitors can give the challenging multiplestep GPS-guided geocache treasure hunt a try. Nearby is Door Bluff Headlands, which also features a high overlook of Green Bay and offers challenging hiking trails and breathtaking waterline views for kayakers. A bay side sandy beach can be found south of Egg Harbor at Frank E. Murphy park, a hub of summer activities with a playground, volleyball court, picnic area and pavilion. The park is also home to the annual Door County Triathlon in July. Several county parks are located on Lake Michigan’s shoreline, including Southern Door’s Robert LaSalle. Retrace the French explorer’s landing point in 1679, and enjoy the rise over the cobblestone beach. Children will enjoy the

playground in the lower level of the park. Also found lakeside is Baileys Harbor Ridges and its newly rehabilitated sand beach. On breezy days, this park is the perfect spot to catch a breathtaking glimpse of local kite boarders riding the wind and waves. A quiet haven for serious naturalists and visitors interested in a challenging hike on unmarked trails is Lyle-Harter-Matter Sanctuary and Meridian near Jacksonport. A highway wayside is the only access point to both of the State Natural Areas, which contain rock outcroppings that showcase the Niagara Escarpment and forested ridges and swales of past lake shorelines. The tallest sand dune in the county is hidden under a forested carpet in the Sanctuary near Kangaroo Lake. In southern Door County, find Sugar Creek just a bit off the beaten path along the bay shore. It now features an 18-hole disc golf course through 20 acres of hardwood forest. Forestville Dam along the Ahnapee River is a quiet inland setting for kayakers and also offers a new pier for catch-and-release fishing. Visitors can walk on the dam’s spillway to enjoy a spectacular view, then stay and play at the playground. The park provides access to the scenic Ahnapee State Trail that is a public pathway for biking, hiking, horseback riding and winter snowmobiling. The trail follows 12 miles of the retired railroad line of Ahnapee and Western. John Miles not only hosts the Door County Fair in August but has multiple soccer fields, a playground, and is home to the county’s only
stock car racetrack. Visitors are likely to see 4-H horse drill teams practicing in summer or special events such as the Century Ride or American Cancer Society Relay for Life. For brilliant fall colors (and history of a horrific tornado of fire that swallowed an early settlement in the area) visit historic Tornado Memorial Park, a quick stop off Highway 57 south of Sturgeon Bay. Local fishermen have enjoyed access to the frozen waters of Green Bay for winter ice fishing for decades by way of Chaudoir’s Dock, Robert M. Carmody and George K. Pinney. Like Pinney Park, Carmody is a modern, accessible boat launch into Green Bay and its renown fishing grounds. A fast fair-weather launch into Lake Michigan is Lily Bay, which leads to a 3-mile stretch of shallow reef north of Sturgeon Bay called “The Bank,” a hotspot for salmon and lake trout. Enjoy the scenery and a bit of adventure with a ride on the ferry from the Peninsula to Washington Island to enjoy a serene waterside picnic and the sandy beach at Percy Johnson park.
