Using the Internet, sending email, browsing social media, making video calls – all are deemed to be easy tasks for people who have either grown up with technology or have made it a hobby. For people who missed the technology generation, using technological gadgets may not be as accessible.

Catching up with today’s tech Resources are available in Door County for seniors looking for help with computers, tablets, cell phones and more By Alyssa Bloechl, Door County Advocate

Senior citizens who are interested in learning about computers, tablets and cellphones are now being offered a number of free opportunities to learn. Groups in Door County have formed to talk Apple, Android and every product in between. For those who are looking for general help with electronics, a visit to the Senior Resource Center in Sturgeon Bay is all it takes. Mark Moeller, a Door County Supervisor, has been frequenting the senior center, located at the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC), to impart his wisdom of nearly every electronic device. Moeller spearheaded an effort to make the County Board paperless in

2011, bringing the supervisors to use tablets to read meeting packets and perform county business. For over a year, Moeller has volunteered his Thursday mornings at the Senior Resource Center to teach all things technology. He has a number of products, allowing people to be able to touch and use them before making a purchasing decision. “The goal here is to remove a fear of electronics,” Moeller said. “You can’t hurt the computer, it will do what you want, but it takes a time investment to educate yourself. You are smart enough.” Moeller’s technological experience came from working as an automotive technician, which flowed into his current interests. “Some people who have met with me purchased new devices, asked questions, and now they don’t come any more. That is a success,” Moeller said. He has helped with difficult web browser problems and simple issues TECH continued on page 3

Meetings with him are one-on-one and usually by appointment, but if more than one person shows up, another volunteer, Quintin Crowe, is on hand to help out. Crowe is a graphic artist who thought he could use his knowledge to help others. “There can be many solutions to a specific thing, and we try to help them get comfortable with an option,” Crowe said. Moeller said he has his “students” do homework after they work together, and after they master a specific skill they expand more on the task.

Moeller and Crowe are happy to help people determine what kind of device they may want to purchase, based on what they want to do with them. Moeller will ask if they want to read, go online, take photos, and so on, and tries to find a good price point for a product. They also talk about protection from adware, malware and fraud. He recommends apps for protection and more. “Young people and techies just know how to do stuff. For the elderly, it is a new world,” Moeller said. “At some point, people learn to troubleshoot on their own.” Taking a bite out of your Apple For those looking into using or purchasing products from Apple – and considering the closest Apple store is in Milwaukee – two groups meet in northern Door County. Rich Stultz of Fish Creek retired to Door County eight years ago and has been using Macintosh computers since the 1980s as a hobby. Two years ago, Stultz joined a Northern Door club called the Mac Users Group. or MUGS. He and Tony Fiorato now comanage the group. Each month they have a planned agenda for their meetings at the Door County Library in Sister Bay. “People became aware that I was a Mac user and started asking questions,” Stultz said. Each meeting begins with a topic for presentation, which may be about MacMail, “Securing Your Mac” or how to use iPhoto, for example. Afterward, the floor is opened to those in the audience to ask questions and troubleshoot their personal issues. Presentations are generally via PowerPoint and with hands-on demonstrations.

Mark Moeller, right, answers Ken Wendt’s questions about iPads at the Senior Resource Center in Sturgeon Bay. Alyssa Bloechl / Door County Advocate Stultz said people who come are rarely under the age of 55 and many are retirees. MUGS was in place at least three or four years before Stultz took over, and before he came into volunteering to teach, the group was rather informal. “Our main goal is to encourage people to use technology,” Stultz said. “In this day and age with the Internet, it has become essential. Smart phones can take and share photos of grandchildren, email and social media connect to friends and family. It’s all very important.” Another local group offering Applebased help is called the iPad Users Group.

T.C. Johnson runs this monthly meeting, which also gathers at the Sister Bay library branch, and topics revolve around iPods, iPads and iPhones. It also covers finding and using different apps, securing devices and troubleshooting. Both groups teach classes on downloading music, creating text documents and other basic functions, and new learners are always welcome. Solving problems becomes more of a group effort as people begin to learn about their devices, Stultz said. Contact Alyssa Bloechl at abloechl@ doorcountyadvocate.com or on Twitter @ DCA_AlyssaB.

FYI: Essential tips for using electronics:

>> Protect yourself. Have a secure password for each account, because using the same password can open up a lot of problems if one account is hacked. >> Have a backup strategy. Determine how you want to back up your photos and important documents, be it with an online application like Dropbox, iCloud or Google Docs, or in an external hard drive. Backups are essential if the computer, phone or tablet crashes, putting users at risk of losing much of their content.

Seniors seeing the sights River cruises, bus tours, family get-togethers among the options to venture out of Door County By Erin Hunsader, For the Door County Advocate

May 2, 2015

Door County’s Baby Boomers are hitting the road, taking vacations by boat, train and bus. But they’re not going alone. This year’s trend is full steam ahead with the entire family. That’s according to Vicki Davis Ries of Any Path to Travel LLC in Sturgeon Bay. Ries, who’s owned the company on South Third Avenue since 2007, said she and her staff have been planning more and more trips for people who are making it a family affair. “We have generational travel going on where grandparents are taking the whole family on reunion-type trips,” Ries said. “Last year we had several clients take their families on ships where everything was included. It made it very easy for grandparents to sponsor and present this wonderful experience for their families to be together.” Ries said she suspects this trend is due to the increase in the amount of time people spend working these days, leaving less time for vacation. “It just seems the grandparents have gotten to this spot where they want more family time and so they gather everybody together,” she said. “They’re touching base with their kids who are working so hard, they hardly have any time off, so let’s all get together and do this.” And what they’re doing is taking their time. Carrie Malvetz, a travel consultant on Ries’ team, noted that seniors have moved away from ocean cruise ships and “are doing a lot of river cruising in Europe.”

There are no formal nights. Everything is taken care of for you.” A few of the most popular river cruises, Ries noted, are along the Rhine and Danube rivers in Central and Eastern Europe. She suggested the Danube for a first-time river cruiser because those cruises “are easy to do and there are a lot of sights to see.” But, she said, if you have your heart set on seeing some castles, “Go on the Rhine.” Another draw for the river cruises seems to be the intimacy of the ship, holding roughly 100 passengers instead of the thousands of passengers on typical ocean cruises. Ries said the ratio of staff to passengers makes it much more personal and service oriented. The river cruises are similar to ocean cruises in terms of time, with seven-day as well as 14-day trips, SIGHTS continued on page 5

where one could start in Amsterdam and end in Budapest, according to Ries. Ries notes that even she and her staff were surprised by how fast the river cruises took off in the last year. “They just went ‘Pow!’” Ries said. “Even Disney now has a river cruise you can do in Disney style, and you can bring the little ones with you.” While river cruising in Europe seem to be the trend in travel right now, Ries said, retirement can mean doing something completely different. “We have one woman, she’s a senior lady, and it’s less expensive for her to live on a cruise ship than it is to be in assisted living,” Ries said. “She just stays on a boat and takes cruises back-to-back.” Back on dry land, Ries and Malvetz noted that rail travel seems to be just the ticket. “We’ve been doing a lot of train trips, a lot of Amtrak lately.” Malvetz said. “I have a family I’m working with now who are wondering ‘Are we going to take the train down to North Carolina (for a wedding) or are we going to fly?” While some folks are taking the entire family along on vacation, “People you travel with become like your family” on Babler Bus Services, Karen Bournoville said. She and her husband, Lee, have

been taking trips with Babler Bus for the last 15 years, and she said they’re so enjoyable because everything is taken care of. “Everything is planned for you. When you go on a trip and you don’t know what sights to see, they’ve got it all planned out,” Bournoville said. “They let you off at the sights, they pick you up. You don’t have to worry about a thing.” Paul Babler, owner of his family’s business, said their most popular tours are just outside our back yard. “Chicago is a very popular destination for us,” Babler said. “We provide day trip tours at least four times a year with our most popular being the holiday shopping and sightseeing the first weekend in December.” Unlike Any Path to Travel, Babler Bus Services’ quieter time is during the winter months, but Babler said there are still things for seniors to do close to home. “A great getaway for an easy overnight trip is our casino tours to the Island Casino Resort in Michigan,” he said. “It’s only three hours away and offers great entertainment, food, and even comedy or music, depending on the day.” Bournoville said she and her husband take the casino trips nearly once a month, which she said helps to keep things interesting in the winter months. Another popular short bus trip

Kewaunee County Star-News /

includes America’s favorite pastime, Babler noted. “We’re offering three (Milwaukee) Brewers trips this year,” he said. “People can bring their own food and chairs for tailgating to help keep the cost down. We also provide charter service for many other local taverns, and groups in the area that go to the games.” In terms of going the distance, Babler said the comapny also offers trips to places that stretch beyond our bordering states. “New this year, we’re offering a 12day New England fall tour (which is already sold out),” Babler said. “We are also offering a seven-day Black Hills, S.D. trip in July, which is still available. And for 2016, we’re planning to offer trips to New York City with Niagara Falls, Nashville, New Orleans and Memphis.” But, Babler said, trips take place in the area as well. “Our local work typically consists of picking up groups in outlying

The storefront for Any Path to Travel in Sturgeon Bay. Submitted areas such as Manitowoc and Green Bay and bringing them to Door and Kewaunee County for the day,” he said. “The fall season is the most popular and it’s nice to help bring business back into the area as well.” So whether you want to head down the Danube or just travel around the area, there’s a trip out there for you and a business to get you there.
