Couples creatively weave family traditions, current ideas into the big event

By Pamela Parks | Advocate and Star-News correspondent

For a modern twist on the traditional “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,” brides and grooms are creatively weaving in the old and new over the borrowed and blue, using treasured family heirlooms in unexpected ways and creating a memorable wedding experience for family and friends. From showering the newlywed couple with good wishes and rose petals or a dazzling light display from sparklers, to incorporating Grandma’s favorite recipe into the dinner or dancing to the wedding song of their parents or grandparents, the mix of the old and new is gaining a stronger foothold in wedding plans today. “Couples are making their weddings very individual and definitely about them and adding their own flair and personality in it,” said Rebecca Braschnewitz of A Delightful Day Weddings and Events in Sturgeon Bay. “It has gone a lot farther than having pictures on a video screen. They want their own personal stamp on their wedding to really make it theirs.”

Making the old new again Couples are mixing in distinct, meaningful touches of the old, from the ring and dress to the cake and everything in between, and making the personal touch a “new” tradition. “It is all about taking old things and creating them into something new, especially with vintage coming back,” said Carrie Baldwin Smith of Door County Meeting and Event Planners. “Brides are taking old headpieces from veils and re-creating them. They are placing old family wedding photos on the guest book table and passing down wedding rings and bands.” To take the handing down of jewelry one step further, couples are adding a bit of symbolism to the repurposing of heirloom jewelry from both sides of the family. With the high price of gold, couples have the gold from handed-down piec-

es melted and the precious stones reset to create their wedding rings.

getting back to their family roots,” Braschnewitz said. “A creative twist on this is setting up a three-dimensional photo vignette — wallpapering or painting an artificial wall, adding a chair, small table and maybe some hats for their guests to wear, and taking photos of people with old family photos on the wall in the background.”

Instead of carrying Grandma’s vintage handkerchief or wearing Mom’s jewelry, brides are adding them to their bridal bouquets. A treasured brooch, locket, rosary or even a military bracelet from the bride or groom’s father or grandfather are tucked into or attached to the bouquet. Brooches are also finding their way into hairpieces, and beaded jewelry from grandparents is restrung on long strands to decorate the wedding cake.

Location, location, location Even couples with destination weddings meant to abandon the traditional are keeping the focus on family, whether it is using a favorite family getaway for the ceremony or creating a memorable experience for guests.

Even wedding gowns are being creatively repurposed. Brides who wish to incorporate their mother’s wedding gowns into their own, rather than wearing them, are reusing the silk to have their initials and wedding date decoratively stitched onto their own dress. And the idea list doesn’t stop there. “When a bride wanted her mother’s wedding dress to be part of the event somehow, her first intention was to hang it with old family photos. When she took it out and the condition was too fragile, we discussed about making it into a ring bearer pillow or handkerchiefs for the family,” Braschnewitz said. “But in the end, the bride took parts of the dress and embellished her own dress.”

A twist on traditional Finding meaning, purpose and style in the items incorporated into a wedding is creating twists to the traditional, as couples mix in some heirloom items that hopefully will have use and meaning in the future, too. Grandma’s china dishes, white milk glass vases or colorful table linens are also showing up at weddings, often used in a stylish mix-and-match setting for the dessert table or as centerpieces to the dinner tables. Even cake knives have a hope at a second life.

“The strongest family tradition I have seen is having the wedding on someone’s private property — Grandma and Grandpa’s cottage or home with a spectacular view or located on the water, or a resort that means a lot to them,” said Lisa Carlson of Cottage Garden Wedding and Event Planners in Ephraim.

For one wedding, The Hollyhock House and Gardens in Kewaunee used vintage vases and canning jars to hold the floral arrangements at each table. Submitted

“People are going back to using the traditional cake cutting knife. It has everyone’s wedding date and names engraved into it, something to hand down to the next generation,” Baldwin said. Having photos of family and guests to preserve the memory of the wedding day for the bride and groom is a solid tradition that most couples are not abandoning. However, many have been getting creative with photography, using photo booths, candid photos and more. “Pictures are a big thing, as people seem to be

And if the couple doesn’t have a family connection to the area, it is selecting special local venues with the same features to create an incredible, close-knit experience for its guests. “Couples are doing things that are family-minded,” said Karen Howlett, co-owner of The Hollyhock House and Gardens in Kewaunee. “It is almost entirely about family and friends. They have their destination wedding here because they want to take time and spend time with family and friends instead of filling a day full of days of commitments they have to do.”

The Victorian garden has a feel of the “old,” but Howlett sees couples incorporating “new” ideas into their ceremony.

“I have seen dogs be part of the ceremony,” Howlett said. “And another neat family friendly experience was a couple who arranged for hay wagons to drive up to the back of the property to unload and pick up their guests.”

Wedding cake is taking on a new look. And sometimes, it doesn’t look like cake at all. “It is such a wide spectrum of what people want these days. something else instead,” said Sarah Basch of Flour Girl Patissier of Fish Creek. “They are selecting desserts like chocolate-covered strawberries, cheesecake, or, because it is Door County, cherry pie instead of cake, and setting up a display that looks like a candy store or bakery shop for guests.” Dessert bars are one of the hottest trends for DESSERT continued on Page 7 >>>

weddings, giving the traditional tiered wedding cake a nudge for a less formal option. Dessert bars that show off a variety of mini-desserts offer guests a fun option and the ability to enjoy the sweet treats throughout the entire event, instead of sitting at a table for hours waiting for a slice of cake. Falling into the mini-dessert category are cupcakes, which are still the rage. And couples are getting a bit more bang for their buck with the miniature confections. “Some people use cupcakes as a centerpiece on the dinner tables. It doubles as a centerpiece and a dessert,” said Tahna Evers, owner of Door County Custom Cakes and Cookies of Sturgeon Bay. Evers also bakes up cookies for guest favors or places them atop cupcakes. “It is nice for guests; they get a little bit of both desserts, and you can do a lot of different things ... from the bride and groom’s initials to the date.”

Bold, fresh flavors “It is anything other than traditional vanilla or chocolate,” Basch said. “It is all about making it a signature flavor to the particular couple.” Cupcakes may be small, but the ones being requested at weddings are featuring big flavors like spumoni (usually chocolate, pistachio and a fruit such as cherry or strawberry), chocolate and peanut butter and Bananas Foster (a banana-cinnamon

concoction), for example.

When the cake is sliced, guests get a taste of both flavors.

“People are really getting creative with flavor, and the mini-desserts allow people to do that, from pear and peach compote to mint chocolate chip or orange chocolate tartlets, and more. Whatever they think of, we can create,” said Kim Jensen, owner of Pink Bakery, 7778 Wisconsin 42 in Egg Harbor. “It is not just your basic white, chocolate and buttercream anymore.”

Also popular at North Water Bakery is the cheesecake torte, a layer of cheesecake atop a layer of cake. The bakery hosts an open house to taste cake flavors and see the new 2012 designs for wedding and special occasion cakes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 4.

Another hot item to hit the bakery request list is “lollies,” or cake balls. Lollies may not give a grand cake the boot, but they are making the wedding scene as favors, as well as on the everpopular dessert buffets. Made from a mixture of crumbled cake, frosting and jams and rolled into balls that are covered with a confectionery coating and decorated, customized lollies are finding an elegant, yet fun place upon the wedding dessert menu.

Nontraditional flavors for traditional cakes For couples who opt to have cake, creating a cake that is personalized inside and outside is the main attraction. Couples are playing up flavor with their wedding cake by mixing the layers of a more traditional tiered cake. At North Water Bakery, brides and grooms can select from 30 different cake flavors to personalize their flavors, selecting flavors for the top and bottom layers of each tier with flavors like chocolate and raspberry swirl or lemon and poppy seed.

The wedding cake may not be the only star dessert of the event. Groom’s cakes, presented as a surprise gift from the bride or created as a solution when the bride and groom don’t quite agree, are not just for Southern weddings anymore. “Groom’s cakes are getting to be bigger than life,” Schneider said. “Sometimes brides will surprise the groom, especially with a special, personal-interest cake like soccer, football or fishing.” From sports logos to their favorite mascots and even some green-and-gold inspired creations, a groom’s cake adds a bit of fun to the formal event and sometimes makes its debut at the rehearsal dinner the night before the big event. Even if couples want to forgo the traditional wedding cake, most will still have a small cake to celebrate the occasion. “People still want people to cut into a cake,” Jensen said. “They may have a five-inch cake to cut into, even with cupcakes. People still want some of that tradition.”
