MARCH 3:

Hatfield/Lake Arbutus

Lake Arbutus cradles both Clark and Jackson Counties in west central Wisconsin. The 840-acre lake was formed in the early 1900’s for the purpose of generating hydro-electric power. Anglers can enjoy both lake and river fishing in Hatfield. The lake and the Black River produce walleye, northern pike, channel catfish, muskie, crappie, and large-and-smallmouth bass. Hatfield is in the heart of both Clark and Jackson Counties, offering a combined total of 320,000 acres of public hunting land, and over 235 miles of ATV and snowmobile trails. Take a short drive over to Bruce Mound, or Levis Mound, for downhill skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and snowshoeing.

Clark County Forest

The Clark County forest was established in 1934, and currently covers nearly 133,000 acres. This large forest provides an abundance of recreational opportunities. There are over 135 miles of county forest trails designated for snow shoeing, snowmobiling, ATV’s, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking. Levis/Trow Mound Recreational Area

Clark County is proud to offer one of the finest non-motorized trail systems in Wisconsin. The Levis/Trow Mound Recreational Area is located within the southwest corner of Clark County, and provides more than 34 miles of trails that wind through the county forest for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and showshoeing. The Levis/Trow Mound Recreational Area, Clark County’s premier cross-country ski trail system, consists of 15 miles of expertly groomed trails for skating and classic technique along with an additional 19 miles of ungroomed back-country routes. Back-country skiers can climb the narrow and difficult single track to the tops of the mounds for a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside. Ski trails are generally open the first part of December through the end of March of each year, depending on snow depth. Trails are closed during the deer hunting season. Winter use of the trail provides an excellent opportunity for wildlife viewing and tracking. Deer, fox, coyote, and even a rare wolf can be seen here. Facilities include a large parking lot, warming shelter, running water, and heated bathrooms.
