Adams County destinations NECEDAH NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE The Refuge features sedge meadow, savanna, prairie, and pine-oak forest habitats. The Refuge is home to dragonflies, whooping cranes, trumpeter swans, wolves, Karner blue butterflies, badgers, and red-headed woodpeckers. Necedah National Wildlife Refuge has one of the largest savanna restorations taking place in Wisconsin. These efforts have provided habitat for more than 110 species of migratory birds, three species of amphibians, 14 types of reptiles, and more than 44 species of butterflies.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING TRAILS The Van Kuren Trail in Monroe Center, Lake Arrowhead in the Town of Rome and Roche-A-Cri State Park north of friendship feature groomed and marked cross-country ski trails. Lake Arrowhead’s trails follow the Pines Golf Course for a unique view of the links. Both Castle Rock County Park on Highway Z in Quincy and Petenwell County Park on Bighorn Drive in Monroe Center feature ungroomed trails. Petenwell has 15 miles of trails and Van Kuren has almost three.

SNOWMOBILE TRAILS Adams County boasts more than 230 miles of state-funded/county-sponsored snowmobile trails that are maintained by local snowmobile clubs. Many of the trails afford views of places diffi cult to reach or inaccessible during the rest of the year. APRIL:

SMELT SEASON, CHEQUAMEGON BAY/LAKE SUPERIOR, ASHLAND. The ‘smelt run’ usually begings around the third week in April, shortly after the ice goes out of the bay. The smelt typically run late at night and are pulled in with nets. Review the regulations and licensing for smelting before participating. 800-2849484, visitashland.com.

Ashland County Destinations ASHLAND Nestled on the south shore of Lake Superior’s Chequamegon Bay, the City of Ashland’s location makes it an ideal jump-off point for both the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and southern Ashland County, home of Copper Falls State Park and Morgan Falls. The Lake Superior Waterfront Trail is a continuous 10-mile trail, linking the waterfront from Maslowski Beach on the west to Bayview Park on the east, to the Fifth Street corridor and back through the city. The business district, listed on the National Register for Historic Places, is the background for murals depicting figures from Ashland’s past. 800-284-9484, visitashland.com.

FISHING Ashland County is known for world-class smallmouth bass fishing and offers four-season fishing for a variety of species, including trout, salmon, walleye, bass, northern pike and panfish. There are great fishing hot spots among the islands in Lake Superior near Ashland. The scenic Sand Cut and Long Island are a must see for any visitor.

WATERFALLS Copper Falls State Park is in Ashland County. There are numerous hiking trails that meander through the park with observation points overlooking canyons, streams and waterfalls. Morgan Falls is located about 13 miles west of Mellen and 6 miles south of Sanborn in the Penokee Range. At the south fork of Morgan Creek, a stream of water cascades 70 feet down the face of a rock cliff to a small pool.

CLARK COUNTY

CLARK COUNTY FOREST The Clark County Forest was established in 1934 and covers nearly 133,000 acres. This large forest provides an abundance of recreational opportunities. More than 135 miles of county forest trails are designated for snowmobiling, ATV's, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking. Clark County destinations HUNTING Clark County has an abundant wildlife population which attracts many sportsmen to the area. Whitetail deer populations average 20 to 25 deer per square mile of deer range. Turkey populations have been increasing countywide with several zones of huntable numbers. There is also a healthy population of black bear in the county. Ducks, geese, and ruffed grouse are numerous and provide ample opportunity for hunters.

Iron County destinations MECCA TRAILS

SCHOMBERG PARK SNOWSHOE TRAIL

The trail is made up of two loops, each one about .85 miles long (totaling 1.7 miles). This trail features easy terrain and is marked.

The MECCA Cross-Country Ski Trails are located in the town of Mercer. There are approximately 18 km of trails groomed for classic and/or skate skiing. Trails are groomed by volunteers, as conditions allow. Hiking, snowshoeing, and dogs are allowed only on the untracked portions of the trails. The trails are also open for hiking and mountain biking in the autumn. The daily trailuse donation suggestions are $8 per adult, $5 per child, $1 per dog, or $20 for however many people you have in your car.

WHITECAP MOUNTAINS Just west of Hurley, this skiing complex features 43 runs of a variety of skill levels, from expert to beginner.

SNOWMOBILE TRAILS Iron County offers over 500 miles of groomed trails, and 175,000 acres of off-trail boondocking. As the snow capital of Wisconsin, the average annual snowfall often exceeds 200 inches, giving Iron County the most reliable snow in the Midwest. Langlade County destinations GARTZKE FLOWAGE HIKING, CROSS-COUNTRY SKI, AND SNOWSHOE TRAILS This trail is about 6.5 miles long with various loops. Snowshoe trails also are available. These trails are very scenic, and traverse through a Norway Pine Plantation, upland hardwood and cedar swamps along the Gartzke Flowage. Parking area, restrooms, warming shelter with fi rewood and tables. From Antigo, travel east on Highway F. Once past the Highway S intersection, continue east on Fifth Avenue Road for two more miles.

ICE AGE TRAIL Dust off your hiking boots and head to Langlade County. Boasting 50 miles of the thousand-mile Ice Age Trail you can get a taste for the Trail on any of five segments that run through the county.

KETTLEBOWL SKI HILL Kettlebowl Ski Hill is a volunteerrun, community ski hill. It has several rope tows, and great skiing for little kids to young teens, and even older folks. The vertical drop is only about 200 feet and is not too crowded, so you can ski all day. It’s a short ride out from Antigo. There are indoor bathrooms in a nice new chalet, lots of good food and hot dog variety, and lots of great families hanging out and enjoying winter. Kettlebowl also includes 4.3 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails, and is part of the 13-mile Ice Age Hiking Trail. From Antigo, travel north on Highway 45 to Highway I. Then, go east on Highway I to Highway 52 for approximately eight miles.

COUNCIL GROUNDS STATE PARK This beautiful park is nestled along the long and winding Wisconsin River. It has 55 modern and rustic campsites available, a public boat landing and a fishing dock. Visitors will also find trails great for skiing, biking or hiking, depending on the season. Harrison Hills includes more than 50 miles of state-funded summer trails on county land, and hundreds of miles of ATV routes in five towns that surround the Harrison Hills. Harrison Hills connects with the Parrish Highlands Trail in neighboring Langlade County. Hikers can trek a 16-mile segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail that includes the trail’s highest point, Lookout Mountain. RIB MOUNTAIN STATE PARK/ GRANITE PEAK SKI AREA As the fourth highest peak in Wisconsin, Rib Mountain State Park, 4200 Park Road, Wausau, has a lot to offer visitors. The view is particularly breathtaking from the observation tower, a 60-foot structure that serves as a perch for those who climb its winding stairs high above the tree tops. With more than 1,500 acres, the park boasts a well-maintained network of hiking and nature trails throughout the wooded area. The nature trails meander through the park’s rocky outcroppings, offering fun places to climb or snowshoe as you enjoy the beautiful fall and winter views. Home to Granite Peak Ski Area, 3605 N. SYLVAN TUBING HILL Sylvan Hill Park, 1329 Sylvan St., Wausau, is home to the longest tubing hill in the state at 1,200 feet. It offers six runs for a great ride down, with two tow lines to pull you back up. The chalet offers a massive stone fireplace for warming up, snacks and restrooms downstairs. Hours of operation are Fridays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., and during school breaks. NINE MILE COUNTY FOREST RECREATION AREA As one of the top cross-country skiing facilities in Wisconsin, the Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area, 8704 Red Bud Road, Wausau, offers 20 miles (33 km) of trails, including loops from .5 mile to 9.6 miles, as well as 6.3 km of lighted trails for nighttime skiing. Well-groomed trails accommodate both skaters and diagonal skiers. A spacious chalet offers concessions, restrooms, changing facilities, lockers, a lounge with a wood stove and panoramic views. POWERS BLUFF PARK This park in Arpin is home to many winter sports including downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and tubing. The park features a two-story stone shelter with concessions available. Two tow ropes are operated, one for skiing and one for tubing. CRANBERRY MARSHES After the leaves have fallen from the trees, there is still time to enjoy some outdoor color with a tour of Wood County’s cranberry marshes. The owners of Glacial Lake Cranberries offer tours by reservation only through the third week of October. Tours are offered during harvest in October from 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at Glacial Lake Cranberries. Cyclists, birders and hikers will especially enjoy the area. Tours cost $15 per person. Reservations are required. 715-887-2095, www.cranberrylink.com. Or tour a marsh with students in the nation’s only Cranberry Science Class at Pittsville High School. A lunch with cranberry treats is included with the tour. Reservations are needed. BIRDWATCHING The George W. Mead State Wildlife Area north of Wisconsin Rapids on Highway S, offers 28,500 acres and more than 70 miles of hiking trails. Birding enthusiasts will have plenty of habitat to explore. This is a popular spot to find sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans, Henslow’s sparrows, greater prairie chickens and ospreys. 715457-6771, meadwildlife.org.

Wood County has 258.4 miles of snowmobile trails to enjoy. Eight clubs make up the Wood County Snowmobile Alliance and maintain the trails.

Cross-Country Skiing Richfield 360 Area Ski Touring Trail The ski touring trail is approximately five miles long. There is also a 2 mile and 1 mile trail marked. Nepco Lake County Park Ski Touring Trail There is currently a total of 4.4 miles (7.1 km) of trail. The trails offer a variety of terrain from easy to moderately difficult. Powers Bluff County Park Ski Touring Trail The trail is approximately 1.3 miles long. Short portions of the trail are rated advanced; however, most of the trail is rated moderately difficult.
