bsence makes the heart grow fonder. This may be an old cliche, but definitely what led to the marriage of Carol and Sid Knight, of Fond du Lac, more than 55 years ago. Two teenagers who fell in love then, recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary Nov. 29, 2013, with a blessing by Father Ryan Pruess at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, St. Peter. Carol was born in Milwaukee and fondly tells the story that the doctor that delivered her was named Dr. Love. She sweetly continued, “I was born into the world with the hands of love.” Early childhood years were spent in Sturgeon Bay, but as a teenager, the family moved to Stevens Point, where she graduated from high school. Carol’s dream was to become a nurse, but life took an unexpected happy detour. Instead she married her sweetheart, Sid, at the age of 18. At the age of 30, Carol finally entered nursing school at Milwaukee Area Technical College (M.A.T.C.) for a two-year course, and graduated as a registered nurse, at the age of 32. Carol worked as an obstetric nurse for two years at St. Mary’s on the Lake, Milwaukee, before she moved to Fond du Lac. She continued as an OB nurse at St. Agnes Hospital for 12 more years. During that time, she and a coworker talked about enrolling at Alverno College in Milwaukee to further their education. She laughed as she and the co-worker jokingly stated, “Let’s do it” after a long night shift where they were both half asleep. They did follow through, and both graduated with a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree. Carol then worked in dialysis at Waupun Hospital for four years, and

then with hospice for five additional years (before the Hospice Home of Hope was built.) Sid was born in Waupaca, where he grew up and graduated from high school, and then went on to the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned a double major with Bachelor of Industrial and Mechanical degrees. During his college years, he was in the R.O.T.C. (Reserve Officer Training Corps), and served in the U.S. Army when he was called for six months active duty. His work took him to Seattle, Wash. for nine months, but realized he missed Carol. He planned to come home for deer hunting, and suggested to Carol, “Why don’t we get married?” Carol joked as she said, “He got a “deer” and a “dear.” On Nov. 29, 1958, they became man and wife. He was 22 and she was 18. Carol fondly shared how they met on a blind date. “We double-dated with friends that introduced us. I don’t remember where we went, but remember wearing a white skirt and a black blouse. The four of us dated together.” Sid furthered his education at Milwaukee School of Engineering, with a Master’s degree in plant management, and worked as a plant manager for Mercury in Cedarburg, Wis. for six years, until it closed. The family relocated to Fond du Lac, where he continued with Mercury until his retirement in 1995. During his years at Mercury, Sid worked in Japan for four years, and then in China for 11 years, where he set up the company in joint ventures in those countries. Carol was fortunate to join him in China and had the privilege of working with the Marines stationed

there, and also treated diplomats from all over the world as a consulate nurse in Shanghai. According to Carol, one of the biggest blessings during their marriage was the births of three premature babies who were born healthy — Brian, Jennifer and Brad. Another highlight was the opportunity to introduce people to living a quiet and peaceful life on their three-acre island on Deer Lake in Phillips, Wis. They enjoyed hosting large groups in the six-bedroom cabin on the island, which they no longer have. Both are thankful for the many travels they took when they could.
Carol and Sid are parents to three adult children and have four grandchildren. Although they consider themselves empty-nesters, “Pretty Boy” and “Big Boy” are two very contented felines who share the Knight’s home. When asked if Carol and Sid have any advice as to the longevity of their marriage, both were quick to reply, “hanging in there,” “willing to change, and be flexible.” Carol added, “We are still the persons we were then.” She continued, “Sid is my best friend. Faith, family and friends, but not necessarily in that order. We always faced life together.”

“Following recent injuries and surgery I needed rehab to help me get back on my feet. I had a prior stay at Grancare, using my Medicare days at a place providing outcome-focused care with emphasis on discharge-to-home.”
I was sure glad Grancare had an opening for me to rehab in a large private room with a 46” flat screen TV. Excellent therapy and compassionate staff got me fixed up so I could join my family in Florida before Christmas!

February is a month for romance Valerie and Wayne Graczyk
I
Join us as we travel to Greece in April and a Danube River Cruise in September. And a romantic getaway to the Amalfi Coast and the Isle of Capri in 2015. Visit somedaytravel.com for information.
n recalling the most romantic sites, my mind wanders to places we’ve traveled, like the French Rivera and Provence AlpesCote-d’-Azur, Florence, one of the most charming and beautiful cities on earth. Few places can beat the romantic experience strolling along the Arno River in Florence with the site of the delightful Ponte Vecchio. We’ve experienced Rome, London and Vienna. Nothing quite captures the romantic heart like a quiet boat Gondola ride going beneath the Bridge of Sighs. And no pictures can prepare you for the absolute beauty of the Isle of Santorini on an excursion on our Greece travels. It is stunningly beautiful and “tickles the heart” to see the windmills and domed churches. It is no mystery to me that Santorini is one of the most popular sites for honeymoons. Then there is Paris, the city of romance. Lights, and bike locks, but more on this later. If you are a person of a certain age, you no doubt can recall seeing Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant in the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock movie “Charades.” Most of the movie is set in Paris and I recall
Valerie and Wayne Graczyk on the French Riviera. SUBMITTED PHOTO
6 ░ EXPERIENCE
one particular scene with Audrey and Cary on a boat ride down the Seine River. They were dancing to the music of “Charades,” as their boat meandered under the bridges. This past September found us, and about 200 other tourists, floating down the Seine River, gliding under the same bridges, viewing the magnificent buildings lit up with white soft lights. We floated past the beautiful Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower was glowing and sparkling in the night. On the shore were small groups of friends enjoying picnics, drinking wine and waving to us. It was as romantic as the movie! OK, maybe I wasn’t dancing with Cary Grant nor wearing an elegant black dress like Audrey, but I was with Wayne which made the moment special. It is an image I will hold in my mind for a long time. The Seine River trip is truly a “must experience” if you go to Paris. The bike locks. This is a relatively new tradition that began in the early 2000s in Paris. They are called “Love-Locks” of Paris. On the Pont de l’Archeveche, the bridge which crosses from Notre-Dame Cathedral to the Left Bank of the Seine, you will
see thousands of ribbons and padlocks attached to its framework. Lovers from around the globe come to declare their love, engraving their initials on the padlocks and fastening it to the bridge itself and tossing the keys into the Seine in a declaration of undying love. So when in Paris, take along a padlock and express your love for each other. And no trip to Paris is complete without visiting The Louvre. Romance is right in front of you when you view the Greek goddess of love and beauty, Venus de Milo. It is one of the most famous ancient Greek sculptures. She is simply incredible to view! The Eiffel Tower is perhaps the most famous landmark of Paris, but it took us three visits to Paris before we actually went to the top. The lines to board the elevator can be very long so you could lose precious time. Each time we attempted to go up the tower, we would bypass it due to the lines and would say, “Someday” we’ll do it. Our “someday” happened this past September. It was late one afternoon and we were traveling around the city on a “Hop On - Hop Off” tour bus. The bus stops right in front of the tower and we could see the line was less than 50 people. Well, we dashed out of the bus and into the line. I don’t particularly like heights or tight paces, but it was a moment not to pass up, again. I held my breath as we shot up to the top viewing platform. IT WAS WORTH the view! And YES, it was romantic to be on top of the world in Paris! However, the most spectacular view of Paris is in Montmartre, Paris’s highest and most northerly hill where generations of artists have lived or worked, including Picasso, Van Gogh, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec and even Hemmingway visited there. On the streets, musicians played and we sat at an outdoor cafe sipping wine and watching artists painting in the square. Our toast to one another was romantic as we sat in this Bohemian Parisian place on top of the “Mount of Martyrs.”
