winter camper Cathy Nett brings fun, education to Boy scouts
F
ond du Lac native, Cathy Nett knows getting through the cold Wisconsin winters and enjoying it as well, can be immensely rewarding. Cathy, 61 years old, born and educated in Fond du Lac, looks forward to spending quality winter outdoor activities with about 50 Boy Scouts (including adult and teen staff members). For the last 15 years, she has been involved with the Bay Lakes Council cold weather camping and training up in Mountain, Wis. — 2½ hours from Fond du Lac. “The area is at the edge of Nicolet Forest, and is just beautiful up there,” Cathy said. It is Cathy Nett where she and the scouts go for Okpik training, after spending a full day in Green Bay prior to the overnight stay up there.

Okpik is an Inuit word meaning “snowy owl.” This training was started about 28 years ago and is led by David Hirn of Sturgeon Bay. The idea is to instruct youth and adults on proper cold weather camping techniques. Many of the 20 staff attending this year became involved in the program by first attending the course with their children. The past several years, youth staff has been included to help teach. The program is for ages 13 and older who are involved in the Boy Scout program. This training is scheduled in two parts. The first part is an all day indoor training session that includes instructional topics, such as proper clothing, weather precautions, signs and how to treat frost bite and hypothermia. Other things taught are types of food to eat to stay warm, sleep systems, and participants learn about various types of shelters to build. After the training, scouts can take these skills back to their units and extend their camping season year-round. The second part of the training program is the outdoor experience scheduled at Camp Bear Paw, near Mountain, Wis. Participants are put in groups of 8 to 12, along with two staff members.
Here they learn to put into practice what they learned in the indoor session. The highlight of the weekend is to be able to sleep in a quinzee. The quinzee is what you might call a snow cave, according to Cathy. It is a mound of snow approximately 12 feet in diameter and six feet high. The walls of the quinzee are about 12 inches thick, and rarely in a properly constructed quinzee the inside temperature is below 30 degrees. She added, “ it is very strong if built correctly.” Cathy said if there isn’t any snow, they still camp out. The scouts pitch tents, cover them with long planks of wood. Either way, the scouts learn how to experience the thrill of outdoor winter camping. They dismantle the shelters before they head back to their respective cities, so there is no danger for others. Even though Cathy is the only participant from Fond du Lac, others hail from Neenah, Menasha, Weyauwega, Oshkosh, Sheboygan, Sheboygan Falls, De Pere, and Sun Prairie. During the interview, Cathy was asked how she got involved in this winter camping

campers are usually up by 8 a.m. and eat breakfast at their campsite. Then all the participants report on what they learned, eat lunch, dismantle their shelters, and pack up their gear for home. Cathy has four grandsons who are now involved in scouting, but still too young to participate with her on her annual trek up to Mountain, but “I have lots of friends in the scouting program, and look forward to reconnecting with them every year.” The most rewarding thing about this endeavor Cathy says is “teaching other scouts and adults that participate they can do this … a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the winter outdoors.” She added, “It’s a great survival tool in Wisconsin winters, not only for the scouts, but everybody.” Her “real job” is at Bemis Company in Oshkosh, where she has held down a factory job for the last six years. Prior to that, Cathy did office work in North Fond du Lac. When asked how long she will be continuing doing this, she was quick to reply, “Indefinitely … as long as I am physically able. I have a lot of friends in the program and just getting together with them is fun.” It’s obvious — Cathy really does enjoy the Wisconsin winter outdoors. ✦

experience. She continued in 1987, the boy scouts put on a demonstration building a shelter and outdoor winter cooking on the ice. This was held on Lake Winnebago, out in Lakeside Park. The event was also held in 1988. She recalled, “It was the first time I experienced winter camping. The warmest it got was 10 below zero. She continued, “It was very warm and very quiet.” After that, Cathy started to train with the adults and got involved with program planning. The rest is history. She laughed, “It’s fun. I enjoy being outdoors in winter. Besides, it relaxes me and allows me to recharge by batteries. And, you get to meet a lot of interesting people.” Cathy explained a typical agenda is the scouts sleep inside cabins on Friday night, eat breakfast in the hall, then start to build their shelters. In between times when they are waiting for the snow to set, it’s time for fun and games. Some bring fishing gear along and go ice fishing in Bear Paw Lake; others ski or snowshoe; some ice-bowl, and still others participate in games, such as a blind compass course, or snow snake races. of 80 participated in this year’s tournament. Women over 80 were presented floral bouquets. Prizes were awarded to Sandy Hanson and Roger Behnke for being the first female and male entrants in the tournament. Prizes were also awarded to bowlers who scored the lowest in each game (names omitted by request). After the first two games, names were drawn to roll a ball down a lane; a strike paid $30, while less than a strike paid $1 per pin. Additionally any game or series ending in “25” won a certificate for Philly’s on 4th. During each game and in each age division rolling two or three strikes in a row (depending on division) won either a Ledgeview or Philly’s on 4th certificate. Plaques were awarded to the male and female bowlers who rolled the most pins (scratch) over their average. Ed Wolf, age 85, showed the pins no mercy as he hit with intense fire power 96 more of them than his average, while Donna Klintworth, at 82, rolled her ball with extreme accuracy firing 18 pins over her average. The top six bowlers in each age division received payouts ranging from $75 for first place to $10 for tenth place. The age division champions also received trophies. The champion in the Women’s Division for age 70 and over was Ruth Kohlmann, with a 611 series. Trudy Kennedy received the trophy in the women’s division age 55-69, shooting a 609. In the 75 and over Men’s Division, Ed Wolf’s 741 series garnered the coveted trophy. In the Men’s Division age 65-74, Don Halbach became the tournament’s first twotime champion (2010) as he held off some late chargers by shooting an outstanding 705. Robert Von Rotz scorched the lanes with a tournament high 782 series in the age 55-64 Men’s Division.

‘someday’ arrives for mother and daughter By valerie and Wayne Graczyk
I
Come along with us if your Someday dreams include England, Alaska or Southern France. You can check these trips out at somedaytravel.com.
n September of 1212, Wayne and I led a trip for Kevin Miller and the Windhover Center for the Arts. This was a most unique travel experience for all 35 fortunate people who joined us as we all experienced the art, wine and foods of Tuscany. It was this trip that we met and enjoyed the company of a mother and daughter traveling together, Robin Speidel and her mother Kerm Giles. Robin was willing to share her story of what this trip meant for her and her mother, so here is her story in her own words. “Someday, Robin. Someday I would love to go to Tuscany.” I heard those words from my mom many times over the years. Then, in September 2011, after reading a travel column by Valerie and Wayne Graczyk about an upcoming trip to Tuscany, the phrase quickly became, ‘I can’t believe it, Robin! We’re going to Tuscany.’ To celebrate both her birthday and my ‘later in life’ college graduation,
Robin Speidel enjoys the delicious foods of Tuscany with her mother, Kerm Giles. SUBMITTEd PhOTO

my mom and I toured Tuscany and Rome with ‘Someday Travel’ and the Windhover. Our first tour meeting in Fond du Lac revealed friends from the area, and many new friends to be made. Our next meeting gave us the opportunity to meet with Tuscan artist Andre Bucci at the opening night reception of his exhibit at the Windhover. Mom and I asked him, ‘What is the number one thing we can’t miss on our trip to Tuscany?’ His response was ‘There are many things to experience but what I hope you enjoy most of all is the experience of the senses: the sights, the tastes, the sounds and the feel of Tuscany’. And we have! Our trip was filled with sensuous food, delicious wine and beautiful sights. However, one lovely mountain-top village, named Volterra, brought us an unusual experience. As a high school teacher I was especially excited to learn about the Etruscans. They were civilized people in the Tuscan region before the Romans took control. Etruscans were spiritual and believed in an afterlife. They were artistic and we had the pleasure of viewing some of their gold jewelry and statues. They believed in and practiced equality among women. In their culture, women were able to own property and were able to be visible in public. While standing in a museum filled with decorated urns and hearing about the Etruscans from the tour guide, my mom and I looked at each other and said, ‘I feel like I’m home’. If you’ve never travelled and experienced this feeling there is no way to describe it; it’s a gift that is given and felt deeply. We found it together at the same moment in that small village of Volterra. The Graczyk’s were wonderful tour leaders, willing to adjust the schedule when the group was tired or itching
If you love gardens, grand estates and watch the PBS series “Downton Abbey,” Wayne and Valerie will be sharing stories in future columns about their travels to the British Isles and also look forward to returning to England in May, 2013.
to explore in a new direction. Their professional care allowed us to focus on enjoying the trip instead of concerning ourselves with details of transportation, waiting in lines for tickets or arranging our own tours. All common travel issues that can rob a person of time and expense and leave one frustrated and drained were taken care of for us. What a delight and additional bonus to our traveling experience. I took many pictures and notes to share with my students in the classroom and was able to create a presentation that tied in perfectly to the early civilization unit I was teaching. When mom and I first returned from our trip and people asked us about our travels, we found that Andre was right. Tuscany was a sensory experience forever to be held within our hearts. Now, when mom sees a movie or reference to Tuscany she says, ‘Robin, we were there!’ and I could respond, ‘YES, we were there together Mom!’ We invite you to share your travel stories with us. New Social Security online services verification letters in the past year. This new online service allows people to conduct business with Social Security without having to visit an office or make a phone call, and very often wait for a letter to arrive in the mail. It also will reduce the time spent by employees completing these requests and free them to focus on other workloads. People age 18 and older can sign up for an account at www. socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Once there, they must be able to provide information about themselves and answers to questions that only they are likely to know. After completing the secure verification process, people can create a my Social Security account with a unique user name and password to access their information. People age 18 and older who are not receiving benefits can sign up for a my Social Security account to get a personalized online Social Security Statement. The online Statement provides eligible workers with secure and convenient access to their Social Security earnings and benefit information, and estimates of future benefits they can use to plan for their retirement. In addition, the portal also includes links to information about other online services, such as applications for retirement, disability and Medicare. “Given our significantly reduced funding, we have to find innovative ways to continue to meet the needs of the American people without compromising service,” said Commissioner Astrue. “These new enhancements will allow us to provide faster service to more people in more places.” For more information, go to www. socialsecurity.gov/myaccount.
