“Dad’s special recipe was known as Steve’s conies,” she said. “It is a guarded family recipe, and Dad wanted to keep it in the family and not be sold.” She said in previous years the special Coney Island hotdogs were sold at the farmers market with her dad’s recipe. This past July, Julie was requested to make Steve’s Coney Island sauce for a large family gathering. She humbly stated, “It received rave reviews and was such a nice feeling.” Julie considers herself very fortunate to be loved and supported — not only by her sister Donna, three nieces and a nephew — also her many friends in the community, especially Darlene Oelke. Even though Julie has been visually impaired all her life, she has made peace with herself. “I am blessed with all the special people who make my life so perfect,” she said. “I really feel lucky.”

She is a freelance singer, has sang for weddings and funerals, community events and many times sang as a soloist. “My hobby, my love, my work … all combined,” she explained. Many times, as a little girl, Julie could not deal with her blindness. “It was very frustrating, but thank God, I had very patient parents and loving family and friends around me who helped me accept this, and my faith in God,” she said. Julie has fond memories of growing up and working in her parents’ cafe, Phillips Cafe, on South Main Street, at the same location from 1946 to 1982. “It was a family-operated café,” she said. “Dad did all the cooking, but we kids helped out with some of the cooking, cleaning and waiting on tables.” The Coney Island hotdogs (conies) were their specialty, and her dad was known for the hot works.

FUNERAL & ESTATE PLANNING

Estate Planning

Estate planning and divorce ISABELL M. MUELLER, ATTORNEY

D

ivorce is a painful and overwhelming process, as anyone who has gone through it knows. The decision to divorce generates additional difficult decisions, such as custody and placement arrangements, how to separate and re-title assets, whether to sell the family home or relocate to a new one and how to pay for future child-related expenses. The decision to update the estate planning is often overlooked or put on the “back burner.” Divorce, however, is an event that requires an immediate update to your estate plan It is a common misconception that the divorce nullifies any existing estate plan. It does not. In fact, the effect of divorce on your estate planning documents varies. For instance, if you had a health care power of attorney naming your former spouse as your primary agent and one of your siblings as

your alternate agent, even if you still want your sibling to be your agent, the divorce has actually voided the entire instrument. You no longer have a valid health care power of attorney. However, if you had signed a financial durable power of attorney with your former spouse as your primary agent, and you had named your former brother-inlaw as the alternate agent because he was “good with money,” after the divorce, your ex is no longer your financial power of attorney, but your former brother-in-law still is. Lastly, with regard to a will or a revocable trust, while the divorce may nullify any provisions in favor of your former spouse, it does not necessarily invalidate any provisions naming any of your former in-laws. Because there is no consistency in the effect of divorce on your individual estate planning documents, the only way to properly address the situation is to start over. As always, your life is a work in progress and your estate plan should be as well.
