ife-long resident “Charlie” Ahner’s love of decoy carving goes back a long way. He fondly recalled his late father attended a decoy carving show in Milwaukee in 1964. He told Charlie you could just as well do something like that ... even better. That’s all it took for Charlie to begin what began his passion for decoy carving. Within four years he developed his technique and polished his woodworking skills. Then in 1968, Charlie entered some of his work in a decoy show in Davenport, Iowa, where he took second and fourth place in his exhibits, which were a pair of teals. “That’s when it (carving decoys) took off.” He added, “It was the only contest I entered.” Decoy carving isn’t the only thing Charlie is passionate about. Although at 82, he doesn’t hunt
2 ░ EXPERIENCE
Story by Lois A. Pflum I Photos by Pat Flood as fervently as in his younger days, he has many fond memories and stories to tell about his early years when he hunted grouse, pheasants, ducks, geese and other waterfowl. When asked how old he was when he first started to hunt, he laughed. “As far back as I can remember.” He continued, “My dad took me along when I was just four years old. My grandmother took army blankets and sewed them together and put a zipper in so I could stand up ... kinda like a sleeping bag.” He hunted with a 12-gauge when he was old enough and started to hunt alone. He joked, “I can’t separate hunting and carving.” Which means he obviously is still passionate about both. Over the years, Charlie also had many successful deer hunts, and still enjoys sharing stories about those adventures.
Charlie grew up in Fond du Lac and graduated from Fond du Lac Senior High School in 1948 — and attended UW-Madison — and later graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics in 1958. In between those years, he served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and received an honorable discharge in 1955. He married his wife, Sandy in 1962. For many years he worked at Mercury Marine; then later drove charter buses for Nichols Five Charter for 15 years. Later on, he and Sandy were fortunate to travel to all 50 states, some of which Charlie discovered when he was driving for Nichols. Charlie’s basement workroom has all the tools he needs for his carving. Some of the tools of his trade are a bandsaw (which he says

is essential), table saw, vises, and grinders, with different types of heads. Charlie explained he starts out with a solid piece of wood, and ends up with a beautiful decorative wood decoy. He uses basswood for the body of the decoy because of the unique characteristics, and it has no grain. The heads of the decoys are done with pine, a soft wood, he noted. He spends about 40 hours from start to finish, making a decorative decoy, completing it with exacting detail and color. Charlie also does working decoy models, which he explained are made out of foam, are waterproof, and not as decorative. It doesn’t take nearly as long to carve these, he pointed out. While he doesn’t have a favorite species, he carves them all, from teals, mallards, pintails, to wood ducks and even the larger swans. He has also done a few shore birds. When he does his carving, Charlie said he always does a certain species in pairs.
Besides the workroom, there is a paint room and a finish room where all his work is completed. “Over last winter I must have
completed about 100 of them,” referring to a stock of decoys. This muti-talented woodcarver has even made duck skiffs and wood
paddles, “mostly out of necessity, due to the prohibitive cost.” One more thing, “I also make shields for deer horns.” ✦
Charles Ahner displays hunting decoys along with showpieces of ducks he has carved. Ahner articulated the duck decoy carving process while showing his wares at the Fond du Lac Public Library.

“After a brief hospitalization for weakness, I was not able to return home. My physician, Dr. Ketterer, suggested I go to Mayville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for an acute rehab stay. I was very pleased with the care I received during my stay and felt safe and secure at the center. The nursing staff was very kind, courteous, and timely in providing my care and medications. The therapy staff was prompt and attentive to the specific rehabilitation needs I required during my stay. Their hard work and dedication helped me to get strong and back home in a few short weeks. Hall of Fame inductee G Baumann ENSHRINED BY Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame
eorge Baumann began an extended career in broadcasting, publishing and writing about hockey when he worked at KOZY radio in Grand Rapids, Minn., from 1970-1974. He did play-by-play for the famous Grand Rapids High School and hosted a twice-weekly Hockey Highlights program reviewing and previewing high school games, and broadcasting interviews with high school and college coaches across Minnesota. Baumann continued his radio career with a move to Waupun in 1974 where he began doing play-byplay of area teams and hosting live sports programs. Expanding his past practices, in 1976 he created the High School Top Ten Rankings and provided them to both the Associated Press (A.P.) and the United Press International (U.P.I.), and to many other media outlets across the State. Baumann soon began a one-page newsletter with rankings, scores and schedules and provided it to any coach who was looking for the information. The newsletter soon grew to become the “George Baumann High School Hockey Report” (HSHR) which was soon expanded to include preseason and postseason results. The growth of high school hockey led to a longer HSHR and more readers, and resulted in Baumann publishing the “High School Hockey Yearbook,” that included schedules and previews of all high school and college teams across Wisconsin. Each season, Baumann provided coverage of both the WIAA and private school high school tournaments and prepared media packets for all the media outlets in attendance. His tournament coverage also included preparation of material to help in selecting the all-tournament teams. In the 1980s, Baumann created the All-State Teams that included players from both public

Baumann helped promote the Senior Class Tournament in Waupun and did play-by-play for the championship game. In 1978, Baumann received the U.P.I. In other aspects of his life, Baumann was president of the Grand Rapids Sports Boosters Club; a charter member and president of the Waupun Morning Kiwanis Club; president of the Waupun Trail Days Committee; a two-term president of the Fond du Lac County Chapter of the American Red Cross; member of the Board of Directors of the Fond du Lac Area YMCA; a member of the VFW and American Legion; and Ambassador Club President of the Fond du Lac Chamber of Commerce. Travel guides do make a difference By Valerie and Wayne Graczyk
T To read the blog and see photos from both April and September tours to Italy, go to somedaytravel.com, click on “Our Blog,” then choose the trip of your choice.
ravelling to Italy twice this year has been a ”pinch me” experience for Wayne and I. Rarely do we lead tours to the same country within the same year. The Windhover Center for the Arts approached us after we had already committed to leading a tour to Italy. The tour focus for the Windhover was very different from the April tour for friends and family members of the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes, so we agreed. Reflecting back I was struck by what we learned and experienced on both trips. What I found most enjoyable was listening to the “expert” guides we retain for our trips. They lead our travelers and share their local expertise with us. On the September trip, we had five great guides over the course of 12 days. In Rome, our guide was Maria, who also served us in April. She is fluent in five languages and has been a licensed guide in Rome for 20 years. Amal was our second guide and was from Lebanon. She married an Italian professor, spoke three languages, including Arabic and guided us in Florence. Cinzi was our guide in Pisa; and again in the hill towns of Volterra and San Gimignano. She even gave us a Tuscan cookbook as a gift, because I had mentioned Wayne does the cooking in our

family. She thought he might want to try some of the local recipes. Rita met us in Siena; and Anna was our guide in Lucca. What guides in Italy have in common are their expertise in a specific city or region, and they are licensed. In Italy there are strict laws where a guide can guide. A person has to take an exam and can only lead in their area of expertise. The guides “Someday Travel” retains speak very understandable English. In certain locations we rent what are called “whispers,” which are headsets each traveler wears and can adjust to their own level of volume. This convenience allows a person to hear the guide well and not disturb other groups also viewing the same site, such as the Sistine Chapel. The guides are very enthusiastic about what they are presenting. They truly want the traveler to know and embrace the rich history, art and culture of the area. One of my jobs was to monitor the tour schedule to allow the group time on their own. The guides are entertaining, often funny and the travelers develop a real bond to them. Guides are also helpful in referring the traveler to shopping areas or restaurants for lunch or dinner. When we meet the guides, we ask them to share something about their lives. We are curious about the employment of the area; what the cost of renting or buying a home is; and what is the school day timeframe. We ask them to talk about their families; where they buy their groceries (no big grocery stores are in any of the towns we visited); and
all the ordinary things in life that create community and their lives. We invite our travelers to get a taste of the difference in the culture versus the U.S. We always learn something new and sometimes we even exchange e-mails and correspond after the trip. A knowledgeable local guide can make a real difference in the understanding of the place you are touring. Yes, you can read a guidebook and do a tour on your own. However, from our experience, we believe you gain so much more by listening to a guide who has studied the area; knows the history and language; and is passionate about sharing it. Guides also save you time because they know the best places to see and routes to take. A perfect example was on our recent trip. We had reversed the order in which we were going to visit three major sites in Rome: the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. Fortunately our guide Maria shared that if we followed our schedule, we would be walking uphill rather than walking downhill. Let’s just say we were all very grateful for the experience as she guided us. Valerie and Wayne Graczyk, are tour directors for their company Someday Travel, Fond du Lac. Their column appears monthly in Experience. Send comments or questions to somedaytravel@charter. com or visit www.somedaytravel.com.
