Chevrolet’s five-seat Equinox crossover SUV is available with either a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine or a 3.6-liter V-6, and both team with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front- or all-wheel drive is available. Competitors include the Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape. In ascending order, trim levels include the LS, LT and LTZ.

Silverado

eXterior hiGhLiGhtS Perhaps most changed is the profile view of the cabs. The windshield appears to reach forward more, the front door looks a tick smaller, and the crew cab rear doors look larger, with much more glass area. On extended cabs the rear doors are hinged at the leading edge, now independent of the front doors. The roof-mounted satellite antenna is well forward, out of danger from utility racks. At the back is the first new definition of “step bumper” in decades, with a step cut into the corner of the bumper that returns bed access to when trucks were lower and bumpers wrapped around.

neW for 2014 Steering assist has been changed from enginedriven hydraulic to electric, a switch that cuts noise and saves fuel. Brakes have returned to all-disc as they were in 2005. The biggest mechanical changes are under the hood with a trio of EcoTec3 engines. Show models suggest improvements in both materials and fit and finish in the Silverado's new interior.

interior hiGhLiGhtS The new center panel groups controls logically for audio and 8-inch touch-screen navigation, if so ordered. MyLink can link up to 10 devices, includes voice recognition and lets passengers make phone calls, enter destinations, browse media, play music and more by telling the vehicle what to do. It will also store contact information and favorite radio stations.

Under the hood All the engines now use aluminum blocks, direct fuel injection, variable valve timing, a 11:1 or higher compression ratio that works on regular unleaded, six-bolt main bearings, a structural aluminum oil pan rather than steel stamping, piston oil cooling, a mechanical vacuum pump and cylinder deactivation. The base 4.3-liter V-6 is all new. The midrange 5.3-liter V-8 has the same bore/stroke dimensions as last year’s engine and is said to produce more power and use less fuel than the 2012 version. Also the same bore/stroke as last year, the 6.2-liter V-8 is said to be the “most capable” engine offered in any pickup, according to Chevrolet. All engines use a revised version of the GM’s six-speed automatic, and the 4.3 and 5.3 are flex-fuel capable.

neW for 2014 The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is more widely available across the Dart’s trim levels but there are no other significant changes.

DODGE

Dart With the debut of the Dart last year, Dodge returned to the compact sedan segment, a class it hadn’t competed in since it offered the Neon. The Dart is based on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, sold overseas by Chrysler (and Dodge) parent Fiat, and it looks to match the Hyundai Elantra and Ford Focus for style points.

eXterior hiGhLiGhtS 16-inch wheels; 17- or 18-inch wheels available, Grille styling varies by trim level. Under the hood 160-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 148 pounds-feet of torque, front-wheel drive, six-speed manual transmission. Available 160hp, turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder with 184 pounds-feet of torque; 184-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 171 pounds-feet of torque. Available six-speed automatic (2.0- and 2.4-liter engines); six-speed dual-clutch transmission (1.4-liter engine).

Currently, only the sixspeed automatic will be offered with the 2.5-liter, but Mazda plans to offer the six-speed manual at a later date. Fuel economy for 2.5-liter-equipped sedans is estimated to be 28/39 city/highway mpg; it jumps to 29/40 mpg when equipped with the available i-ELOOP regenerative braking system. Hatchbacks should return 28/37 mpg, and the i-ELOOP system bumps that to 29/39 mpg. The i-ELOOP system is part of the $1,600 Touring Technology Package on s Grand Touring models and adds the regenerative braking system, active grille shutters, high beam control, a lane departure warning system and the Smart City Brake Support system. The s package not only adds the more

powerful engine, but also includes sporty features like 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, a piano black-finish front grille, LED daytime running lights, leatherette seats and door panel inserts, and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. It starts at $25,390 on Touring sedans and $25,890 on hatchbacks. The s model in Grand Touring trim starts at $26,790 for sedans and $27,290 for hatchbacks. The redesigned 2014 Mazda3 gives compactcar shoppers an alluring choice outside and in, with a satisfying mix of efficiency and performance in hatchback and sedan body styles. Sedans and hatchbacks come in "i" and "s" versions that signal a 2.0-liter or 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, respectively. Both employ Mazda's SkyActiv drivetrain technology — a first for the 2.5-liter — for EPA combined city/highway mileage estimates in the low-to-mid 30s. The Mazda3 i comes in SV (sedan only), Sport, Touring and Grand Touring variants, while the Mazda3 s comes in Touring and Grand Touring editions.

eXterior hiGhLiGhtS Like in the new 2013 Ford Fusion, the Mazda6's side mirrors are mounted on the door rather than the side A-pillar for aerodynamic reasons. The carmaker says the front wheels have been pushed nearly four inches forward to reduce front overhang, while the rear decklid has been shortened. The rear features a wider trunk opening, and the new ultra-high tensile steel body is more than 200 pounds lighter than the current Mazda6.

VehiCLe oVerVieW The 2014 model year marks the Grand Cherokee’s most substantial update since this generation’s debut for 2011. It boasts a new transmission, exterior and interior tweaks, an optional diesel engine and a new trim level. The SRT performance model also receives some welcome upgrades. The five-seat SUV competes with the Audi Q7, Land Rover Range Rover Sport and Volkswagen Touareg. eXterior Subtle changes for 2014 — shorter grill, slimmer headlights and the bumper has been raised. There are now LED daytime running lights. The taillights have gotten larger, and Jeep says it redesigned the liftgate to improve rear visibility. Greater changes come in the new Summit, appropriately named as the top trim level, above Overland. It gets unique headlights, grill and 20-inch wheels. It also gets the SRT performance model’s rear spoiler and a distinctive rear bumper. interior Upgrades for 2014 include a 7-inch customizable LCD instrument panel and a redesigned center control panel with Uconnect 5- or 8.4-inch touch-screens. The new transmission is controlled via a leather-wrapped T-handle electronic shifter and by steering-wheel shift paddles, standard. The new lushest model, the Summit, has leather seats, suede-like headliner and A-pillar treatments, openpore wood trim and optional copper-colored accents. Under the hood A standard 290-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 and an optional 360-hp, 5.7-liter V-8 with a choice of rear-wheel drive or three separate 4x4 systems. New for 2014 is a 240-hp, 3.0-liter diesel V-6. The Grand Cherokee receives an eight-speed automatic transmission, replacing the previous model year’s five- and six-speed automatics. The new transmission is claimed to boost highway mileage by 2 mpg to 25 mpg for the 3.6-liter V-6 and 1 mpg to 21 mpg for the V-8 (rear-drive versions). The tow rating jumps to 6,200 pounds. When teamed with a two-speed transfer case, the new transmission also lowers the off-road crawl ratio to 44 to 1. The diesel V-6 will produce 240 horsepower and 420 pounds-feet of torque, giving the diesel option the highest mileage — a claimed 30 mpg highway — and the maximum towing capacity of 7,400 pounds. The Enclave was updated for 2013 with LED lighting and chrome accents inside and out, and upscale, soft-touch materials on the inside. It seats seven or eight. eXterior The CX-5 takes the brand’s now-signature smiling grille and shapes it into a five-point scowl. Dual tailpipes, a raked rear window and a prominent roof spoiler distinguish the rear. interior The CX-5’s simple dashboard has white backlit gauges and a vertical panel housing the center controls. The steering wheel has tilt and telescoping adjustments, as well as redundant audio controls. The backseat folds with releases in the seatbacks and cargo area. An optional 40/20/40-split folding seat allows the center section to fold for narrow cargo. Cargo room behind the second row totals 34.1 cubic feet, with roughly 65 cubic feet of maximum space with the seats folded. Under the hood The CX-5’s base engine is Mazda’s SkyActiv 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which also goes in the Mazda3. A new SkyActiv 2.5-liter four-cylinder is optional.
