BUICK ENCLAVE
BUICK ENCORE
tHE rEPOrtEr
VEHICLE OVERVIEW Near-luxury crossovers, a segment that slots below entry-luxury models like the BMW X3 and Lexus RX, are still in their infancy, but Buick throws its hat in the ring with the Encore. Slotting far below the three-row Enclave, the Encore stretches the limits of entry-luxury crossovers, taking on models that haven't even arrived here yet: the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. Shoppers might also compare it to premium models from non-luxury brands such as the Volkswagen Tiguan or Mazda CX-5. Front-wheel drive, a small turbo four-cylinder and an automatic transmission are standard. All-wheel drive is optional.
VEHICLE OVERVIEW Buick's three-row Enclave is the most luxury-oriented SUV of its GM siblings, which include the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia. In its redesign, the Enclave uses LED lighting and chrome accents inside and out, plus fresh multimedia technology and soft-touch interior materials. Enclave competitors include the Acura MDX, Lexus RX 350 and Volvo XC90. EXTERIOR The Enclave's new front styling has an upright grille, hood accents and front headlights similar to Buick's LaCrosse sedan. LED lighting is abundant, showing up in the front daytime running lights, accent lighting and rear taillights. Exterior features include high-intensity-discharge headlights, 19-inch wheels.
EXTERIOR The Encore is small, nearly 3 feet shorter and 9.1 inches narrower than the Enclave. The overall shape looks like GM's erstwhile Saturn Vue, with Buick cues in the grille, faux hood portals and blue-tinged headlights. Faux vents cut a chunk from the lights themselves, and the lower flanks can have a darker finish. Short overhangs characterize the profile, which sits on 18-inch aluminum wheels.
INTERIOR The most notable change inside comes with the new center stack that houses an Intellilink multimedia system with phone integration including smartphone applications, new climate controls and capacitive-touch controls. The Enclave's interior isn't altered as much as the exterior, but features blue LED lighting bordering the dashboard. Interior features include: ● Tri-zone climate system ● Power liftgate ● Remote start ● Eight-way power driver's seat; four-way power passenger seat ● Chrome accents ● Available navigation system ● Available Bose 10-speaker stereo ● Seven or eight occupants
INTERIOR Active noise cancellation in the Encore is a Buick first. Buick's IntelliLink multimedia system is standard; it can stream smartphone applications through a 7-inch dash display. Like the Verano sedan, the Encore comes with standard leatherette-and-cloth or optional full-leather seats. Other options include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a navigation system and a backup camera. Behind the rear seats is 18.5 cubic feet of cargo room. Fold the seats down and the Encore has 48.4 cubic feet, which is closer to hatchback than SUV territory, but similar to the space in the X1 and Q3, Buick says. The Encore's fold-flat front passenger seat allows for longer, narrow cargo to fit.
UNDER THE HOOD The 2013 Enclave rides on revised front and rear shocks that Buick tweaked to reduce the jarring feeling over bumps. Mechanical features include: ● 288-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 ● Six-speed automatic transmission ● 17/24 mpg city/highway, front-wheel drive ● 16/22 mpg city/highway, all-wheel drive
UNDER THE HOOD GM's turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder is the sole engine. With 140 horsepower and 148 pounds-feet of torque, the tiny four-cylinder works through a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is optional. SAFETY Ten airbags, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system are standard. Forward collision and lane departure warning systems are optional.
SAFETY Safety features include an electronic stability system, traction control, backup camera, curtain airbags, blind spot warning system and rear cross-traffic alert.

CADILLAC XTS
CHEVROLET MALIBU ECO
VEHICLE OVERVIEW The XTS is Cadillac's all-new full-size sedan, which replaces both the DTS and STS and boasts above-average interior volume. The XTS comes in three trim levels: Luxury, Premium and Platinum. EXTERIOR XTS has diamond-like multifaceted surfaces, vertical headlight assemblies and large grille we've seen for years and adds some of the newer elements from recent models: a boat-tail rear end, a red trunk lid spoiler that doubles as a center brake light and 3-D taillights that recall classic tailfins. Perhaps the boldest look is a dark-colored XTS Premium, on which the realaluminum grille is the most dominant. Lower trim levels have less grille bling. Nineteen-inch alloy wheels are standard, and 20-inchers are optional. INTERIOR Though it's based on a different platform, the XTS continues in the DTS sedan tradition with a roomy interior and huge trunk. The main event in the XTS' wellappointed interior is the debut of the Cadillac User Experience, or CUE, which comprises a configurable electronic instrument panel, an 8-inch touch-screen and the buttons that control them — on the steering wheel and dashboard. To mitigate one of the chief complaints about touch-sensitive panels, which have taken the place of mechanical buttons in some cars, CUE implements a tactile pulse felt when the user pushes one of the buttons or even the touch-screen. UNDER THE HOOD Available with front- or electronically controlled all-wheel drive, the XTS is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 300 horsepower. The sole transmission is a six-speed automatic. Air suspension in the rear and Magnetic Ride Control adaptive shock absorbers at all four corners are standard. The XTS introduces a capless fuel tank, a design first adopted by Ford. SAFETY The XTS includes antilock brakes, electronic stability system and frontal airbags. Also standard are front-seat side-impact airbags and side curtains. The XTS offers a slew of active safety features — mostly as options — intended to prevent a collision: radar-based blind spot warning, cross-traffic alert, forward collision alert and automatic collision preparation. There's also lane departure warning and optional front and rear automatic braking.
tHE rEPOrtEr
VEHICLE OVERVIEW Chevrolet's Malibu midsize sedan received a complete redesign for the 2013 model year and features three new powertrain choices. The all-new Malibu is Chevrolet's first global midsize sedan, sold in nearly 100 countries around the globe. Available in LS, LT, LTZ and Eco trim levels, the five-seat Malibu competes with the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima. EXTERIOR The 2013 Malibu has a completely new exterior. Compared to the previous generation, the new Malibu is slightly shorter but has a broader stance as it's nearly 3 inches wider. Carrying design elements from the Camaro and Corvette sports cars, the Malibu can have dual exhaust tips and high-intensity-discharge headlights. Available active shutters behind the front grille automatically close when conditions allow to improve aerodynamics and fuel economy. 17-inch alloy wheels with low-rolling-resistance tires are standard. INTERIOR The cabin features a dual-cockpit design with optional blue ambient lighting. Noise-deadening glass and materials help the new Malibu claim the title of the quietest car Chevrolet has ever made. A unique feature of the 2013 Malibu is its available 7-inch touch-screen display, which can flip up to reveal a hidden storage area for a mobile device, sunglasses or wallet. Trunk volume is up from last year, as the 2013 Malibu has 16.3 cubic feet of cargo room (13.2 cubic feet for the Malibu Eco). UNDER THE HOOD The Malibu Eco uses a gas/electric powertrain GM calls "eAssist." The mild hybrid system is a re-engineered version of the hybrid powertrain in the outgoing 2012 Malibu. The new system debuted in Buick's LaCrosse for 2012 and combines a 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a lithium-ion battery-powered electric motor. Regenerative braking and engine stop-start functionality also help save fuel, but the Eco cannot run solely on battery power. EPA estimates for the Malibu Eco are 25/37 mpg city/highway. SAFETY Ten standard airbags including knee, side curtain, front-seat side-impact and rear-seat side-impact. Additional safety features include electronic stability system/traction control, OnStar system, available lane departure warning system, available forward-collision alert.
2013 FEATURE
CHRYSLER 300C
VEHICLE OVERVIEW The eight-speed automatic transmission is standard with the V-6 engine, and leather upholstery and heated front seats are now standard. The V-6 in the 300S model makes 300 horsepower. A black roof is optional for the 300S, and the optional Garmin-based navigation system gains improved 3-D-map and routeguidance graphics. A new 300 Glacier model features all-wheel drive, body-colored and glossblack exterior accents, 19-inch aluminum wheels, cloth/leather-trimmed seats, piano-black accents, a leather-wrapped thick-rim steering wheel and Glacier logos.
• We work with ALL INSURANCE COMPANIES • FAST, FREE ESTIMATES Alternate transportation available during repairs • ECO FRIENDLY TECHNOLOGY and Lifetime Warranted Workmanship
EXTERIOR The 300 has a distinctive grille with horizontal blades, though those who prefer a mesh grille can get one installed through Chrysler's aftermarket Mopar division. In back, the bumper angles forward, meeting the taillights without the conventional ledge where the two elements join. Exterior features include: ● Standard 17-inch wheels (18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels optional) ● Optional high-intensity-discharge headlights ● Optional dual-pane panoramic sunroof INTERIOR Light-blue gauges sit behind a broad steering wheel, and a standard 8.4-inch center display houses various touch-screen controls, along with the optional navigation system. With the help of a raked windshield, thinner roof pillars and new door frames, the 300 provides increased outward visibility compared with its predecessor. Dual-zone automatic climate control, a power driver's seat and a USB/iPod-compatible stereo are standard. Trunk volume is 16.3 cubic feet. UNDER THE HOOD The 3.6-liter V-6 works with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The optional 5.7-liter V-8 pairs with a five-speed automatic.

2013 FEATURE
CHEVROLET SPARK
CHEVROLET TRAVERSE
VEHICLE OVERVIEW Chevrolet brings its minicar to the U.S. in the Spark, a hatchback sold overseas since 2008. The Spark boasts city-friendly dimensions and Chevrolet's optional MyLink multimedia system. Slotting below the entrylevel Sonic, which is more than a foot longer in hatchback form, the Spark competes with a handful of minicars in the U.S.: the Smart ForTwo, Scion iQ and Fiat 500. EXTERIOR Where other minicars have two doors, the Spark has four. The rear doors integrate handles near the C-pillars. Like a lot of minicars, the Spark mixes flashier paint colors — with names like Jalapeno and Techno Pink — with traditional hues. Fifteen-inch alloy wheels are standard, which is uncommon for a budget car. Uplevel trims have body-colored exterior moldings, fog lights and chrome details. INTERIOR GM claims the four-seat Spark has more cabin room than its minicar competitors. Power windows and air conditioning are standard. Like the Sonic, the Spark has a futuristic instrument pod with a single gauge and flanking information screen. In back, a cupholder and storage tray separate two outboard seats. Chevrolet's optional MyLink multimedia system has a 7-inch touch-screen that can integrate various applications from a connected smartphone. Other options include heated faux-leather seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. UNDER THE HOOD A 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine makes 85 horsepower. It works with a fivespeed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. SAFETY Standard safety features include 10 airbags, including rollover-sensing curtains, plus antilock brakes and an electronic stability system.
VEHICLE OVERVIEW The Chevrolet Traverse accommodates seven or eight people in three rows of seats. Like its siblings, the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia, the Traverse was mildly updated inside and out for the 2013 model year and competes with the Honda Pilot, Mazda CX-9 and Toyota Highlander, among others. EXTERIOR Updates include a new domed hood and a new approach to Chevrolet front ends: larger grilles with the Chevy emblem in the upper grille rather than on a cross-bar between two grille segments. The headlights are also reshaped, and there are more chrome accents. Around back, redesigned taillights improve greatly on the first generation's small, oddly shaped lenses. Between that and the license plate's relocation from the bumper to the liftgate, the rear end no longer looks like the side of a barn. Among vehicles in its class, the Traverse is long, but it pays off in interior volume. INTERIOR The Traverse's second row comes as a three-seat bench or a pair of captain's chairs, both of which collapse vertically and slide forward to facilitate third-row entry. Upgrades for 2013 include improved materials, softer surfaces, contrast stitching, new chrome and wood appliques and optional ambient lighting. A new center control panel on the dashboard improves on the previous generation's look and feel. A 6.5-inch touch-screen optionally includes Chevrolet's MyLink, which communicates with smartphones to stream internet radio stations like Pandora and Stitcher. UNDER THE HOOD The Traverse is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 engine with 281 horsepower. An optional dual exhaust system boosts power to 288 hp. Chevrolet says the standard six-speed automatic transmission has been revised to shift more quickly and consistently. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is an option. The suspension has also been refined for the 2013 model year. SAFETY Standard safety features include side-impact airbags for the front seats, plus side curtain airbags for all three rows. Antilock brakes and an electronic stability system are also standard, as is a backup camera and OnStar (with an introductory subscription). New safety options include a blind spot warning system and cross-traffic alert.

FORD
HYUNDAI
The 2013 Ram 1500 was supposed to be a typical refresh, but Ram Truck had seen the competition rework its trucks to a more thorough extent. This led the truckmaker to make a more aggressive redesign. The Ram 1500 has been the perennial Bronze medalist in the full-size truck sales competition, and Ram Truck has made huge improvements recently with models such as the Tradesman, Outdoorsman and Express. But the 2013 Ram 1500 needed to be
Santa Fe Sport Hyundai redesigned the Santa Fe for 2013, splitting the lineup into two SUVs with separate size and styling: the two-row, four-cylinder Santa Fe Sport and the three-row, V-6 Santa Fe. Initially developed during DaimlerChrysler's tenure, it shares its framework with the MercedesBenz M-Class. A high-performance SRT8 version is available. A new off-road-oriented Trailhawk model debuts for 2013. Offered with either the V-6 or V-8 engine,
Jetta Hybrid A longtime proponent of diesel engines as a way to save fuel, Volkswagen has also begun appealing to consumers' green sensibilities with hybrids, first with the Touareg Hybrid SUV and now the five-seat Jetta Hybrid compact sedan. Available at dealerships toward the end of 2012, the 2013 Jetta Hybrid will get estimated combined gas mileage of 45 mpg, Volkswagen says. That's 1 mpg greater than the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid

special. Ram engineers started by improving the Ram's foundation. Liberal use of high-strength steel allows the half-ton frame to be stiffer, stronger and lighter. Use of aluminum for upper and lower control arms, as well as the massive hood, shaved even more weight off the truck. The new frame was needed to accommodate a new airbag suspension, which is similar to the one used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, to help with a smoother, more controlled ride, as well improving load leveling when towing. The five-position air system drops for better aerodynamic drag at speed and can be raised (for either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive) for better ground clearance. Big news is in the powertrain. Ram gets a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine. Also new for 2013 is a segmentfirst eight-speed transmission, to be standard on the V-6 and an option with the bigger Hemi V-8. The midrange 4.7-liter V-8 gets the 65RFE six-speed automatic transmission only. Other improvements include a significantly
upgraded interior along with an exterior that has been tuned for better aerodynamics. Likewise, new technology like active grille shutters, electric power steering and engine start/stop technology are in play with certain models, as well. Outside, the new Ram may look similar to the previous version, but the changes are significant. Engineers have closed the gaps in the front air dam and bumper to allow more air to get pushed up or around the Ram's big face. The rough edges in the hood and grille have been "sanded" smooth to help airflow. The new Ram also will offer new grille styles, dependent on trim level, as well as a new bifunctional halogen projector beam headlight option. The new headlights and LED accents are said to offer more light, a better pattern, and use less energy doing it. The taillamps also have been redesigned and sport multiple LEDs. There is a new gauge cluster in front of the driver, with a new 7-inch screen between the tachometer and speedometer.
cylinder or a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder. It slots between the smaller Hyundai Tucson and the larger Santa Fe. Competitors include the Ford Edge and Nissan Murano. The Santa Fe Sport looks similar to the Santa Fe but 8.5 inches shorter. The Sport has a similar hexagonal grille, but the beltline takes a sharper angle upward at the rear-quarter windows. Chrome trim along the grille and door handles is standard, as are body-colored mirrors. Seventeen-inch wheels are standard, while turbocharged models get 19-inch wheels. The Santa Fe Sport's interior looks similar to the confines within other Hyundai cars, with plenty of overlapping materials and an angular, sweeping panel that houses climate and audio controls. The standard cloth seats have stain-resistant fabric. Behind the rear seat is 35.4 cubic feet of cargo space, which beats the Edge (32.2 cubic feet) and Murano (up to 31.8). Sliding second-row seats and a heated steering wheel are optional; so is a panoramic moonroof.
Turbo models get keyless access with push-button start. A CD stereo with USB/iPod compatibility is standard. Hyundai's Blue Link telecommunications system with three months of service is standard (a subscription is required thereafter). The optional navigation system has an 8-inch screen with Hyundai's latest generation of navigation. Hyundai says the system's voice recognition can pick up addresses with streets and cities in the same sentence. The Santa Fe Sport's base engine, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder, uses direct injection to make an estimated 190 horsepower. A six-speed automatic is standard. Hyundai expects the Santa Fe to get 33 mpg in EPA highway ratings with frontwheel drive, which beats other small SUVs. The turborcharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is estimated to produce 264 hp. Drive-selectable steering can alter power-steering assist to improve feedback on curvy roads or reduce steering effort in city gridlock. Turbo models get upgraded shock absorbers.
Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda3, Subaru Impreza and Toyota Corolla. A manual transmission is newly available for the Focus' top-of-the-line Titanium trim level and the high-performance turbocharged Focus ST hatchback joins the lineup. The Focus is an exceptionally stylish vehicle in this historically conservative class. It offers body-colored door handles and side mirrors with integrated turn signals. Exterior features include standard 15-inch steel rims. The Focus' interior size compares to the Civic and Corolla, with less backseat room than the Cruze. The Focus' interior quality is notably higher than its predecessor, with standard cloth and, in higher trim levels, optional leather upholstery. Heated front seats are also optional. A one-piece folding bench backseat is standard, and a 60/40-split version is optional. The sedan's trunk measures 13.2 cubic feet. The hatchback offers 23.8 cubic feet behind the backseat and a total of 44.8 cubic feet when the rear seats are
folded flat. The Focus is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that teams with a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic, which uses a fast-acting dual-clutch design. (It has no clutch pedal and operates as an automatic from the driver's perspective.) The Focus is rated as high as 38 mpg on the highway with the automatic and 36 mpg with the manual. The best efficiency comes with the Super Fuel Economy Package, which delivers 40 mpg highway with the automatic. The Focus offers two suspension tunings, tied to wheel size. The base covers all wheel sizes from 15 to 17 inches. The Titanium's optional 18-inchers come with a firmer, sportier suspension. The Focus marks the debut of new airbag technology that Ford says will better protect against chest and rib injuries. Both the shape and a new variable venting feature attempt to tailor airbag deployment to suit the occupant's position.
the Trailhawk features Kevlar-reinforced 18-inch tires, undercarriage skid plates, the Quadra-Lift air suspension and Selec-Terrain technology. The exterior gets special badging; gray, red and black accents; and five-spoke 18-inch aluminum wheels. The cabin is fitted with black leather and suede seats with red stitching and Mopar floormats. Sleeker-looking than the model it replaced, the Grand Cherokee still resembles a Jeep, but it's perhaps the brand's greatest stretch so far. Traditional Grand Cherokee cues remain, including a seven-slot grille and horizontally arranged headlights, but the rear end was completely reworked. The cabin has nice materials, with wellintegrated center controls and genuine wood trim on uplevel models. There's an available leatherwrapped dashboard, something usually reserved for luxury cars. The standard 3.6-liter V-6 makes 290 hp and 260 pounds-feet of torque. An optional 5.7-liter V-8 makes 360 hp and 390 pounds-feet of torque.
With the V-8, maximum towing capacity is 7,400 pounds. The V-6 maxes out at 5,000 pounds. Mechanical features include rear-wheel drive or choice of three four-wheel-drive systems. Available Quadra-Trac I automatically transfers power between the axles without any driver involvement. Available Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II have low-speed transfer cases for dedicated offroading; Quadra-Drive II adds a rear electronic limited-slip differential. With Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive II, the Selec-Terrain system allows drivers to choose among five situations: Sport, Auto, Snow, Sand/Mud and Rock, with the system adjusting drivetrain and suspension settings to suit conditions. Available Quadra-Lift air suspension can vary ride height Standard safety features include front-seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags for both rows. Active head restraints, four-wheel-disc antilock brakes and an electronic stability system are also standard.
achieves. With the base 2.0-liter gas four-cylinder and an automatic transmission, the regular Jetta gets combined gas mileage of 25 mpg. Unique exterior styling cues are relatively minimal, with the biggest changes at the front of the car. There's a new grille, and the headlights can be accented with available LED daytime running lights. The sedan also has 15-inch low-rollingresistance tires and a small rear spoiler for better aerodynamics. Inside, a multifunction screen in the instrument panel shows hybrid system information. A Power gauge takes the place of the tachometer, providing another way to visualize the system's operation. Plus, there's a "zero emissions" menu in the stereo that uses bars to show what percentage of the last minute was spent without engine emissions. It can track this for up to 30 minutes. Available features include a power driver's seat, heated front seats, a navigation system, a backup camera and Fender premium audio. In a break from other hybrid cars currently
available in the U.S., the Jetta Hybrid has a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine that makes 150 horsepower. Most hybrids have a normally aspirated engine. The four-cylinder works with a 27-hp electric motor. The Jetta Hybrid can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than nine seconds, according to Volkswagen, and drive at speeds up to 44 mph on electric power alone. The electric motor is powered by a 1.1-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack behind the rear seat. The Jetta Hybrid's transmission is different from most hybrids', too. It's a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, which is a transmission design Volkswagen uses in some of its other cars including the GTI, as opposed to the more common continuously variable automatic transmission. Moving the Jetta Hybrid's gear selector to the S position yields greater drivetrain responsiveness. Standard safety features include antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags.

18-inch aluminum wheels and black accents for the grille, fog lamp bezels, headlights and badges. The S Package builds upon it with the addition of leather-trimmed seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The 200 convertible, meanwhile, receives an overhauled suspension that includes a larger front stabilizer bar, revised shock damping and new spring rates for a more engaging driving experience, according to Chrysler. The 200's predecessor, the Sebring, wasn't what you'd call a gracefully-styled sedan, but Chrysler designers updated the 200's exterior to make it a little more like one. The design is sleeker, and it introduced a new Chrysler wing badge that's more abstract than before. The 200's headlights incorporate LED light pipes that give the headlights a high-tech look at night. There's still the stubby trunk lid at the rear, along with the familiar arcing C-pillars, but the 200's revised tail lost much of the older Sebring's chunkiness, thanks to new taillights and trim pieces. Exterior features include standard
17-inch steel wheels with covers — 17- or 18-inch aluminum wheels optional. Standard power heated side mirrors, remote keyless entry. Optional power sunroof. The interior's dashboard uses nice materials and exhibits Chrysler's greater attention to detail in things like the air vents and door trim inserts. Interior features include standard cloth seats (leather optional), manual air conditioning (automatic air conditioning optional), CD stereo with MP3 jack, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls. Options include heated front seats, touch-screen stereo with 28 GB of music storage, navigation system. The 200's base engine is a 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder. Depending on the trim level, it teams with either a four- or six-speed automatic transmission. Chrysler's 283-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 is optional, and it works with a six-speed automatic. Standard safety features include antilock brakes, electronic stability system, side-impact airbags for the front seats, side curtain airbags (sedan), active front head restraints.
The Acadia's face-lift includes a new front end and interior design. The new look includes a large squared-off three-bar grille and a more chiseled hood. The massive grille and smaller squared headlights with non-functional air vents underneath look like the eye black and face mask of a football player. Around back, the model gets D-pillars that are also encased in glass and a new rear spoiler. New 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheel designs are available. LED running lights come standard, too. The Denali trim gets 20-inch wheels, body-colored ground effects, a chrome grille and panoramic sunroof, all standard. In the cabin, the Acadia gets a new upper dash and console design that features more padded materials, and new satin- and woodpatterned trimming. The center console features new switchgear and a touch-screen display with some button-less capacitive touch controls. The radial dials for the climate controls have small LCD readouts for temperature.
The new display comes with IntelliLink, a multimedia operating system that GMC and Buick share. IntelliLink gives access to Pandora and Stitcher internet streaming audio, so long that you have a smartphone tethered to it. Denali models come with perforated leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, a real wood-trimmed steering wheel and a navigation system, standard. Available with front- or all-wheel drive, the Acadia is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 288 horsepower. The sole transmission is a six-speed automatic. The Acadia is the first vehicle to get a front center air bag option designed to restrain the driver and front occupant from colliding with each other or other objects, and acts as an energyabsorbing cushion and hold you in place in a collision. Blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic-systems are also available. Denali blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic systems are standard.
and gets an EPA-estimated 29/40 mpg city/ highway whether you get the standard six-speed manual or the optional six-speed automatic. Available exterior options include automatic headlights, power moonroof, fog lights. Sweeping dashboard lines and a center console that rises to meet the dash lend a modern appearance to the sedan. A highresolution touch-screen navigation system that incorporates a backup camera is optional, and the screen is mounted high on the dash. Interior features include standard cloth seats (heated leather seats optional), choice of twotone interiors, remote keyless entry, CD stereo with USB and auxiliary inputs, 60/40-split folding backseat. Hyundai's four-door hatchback GT replaces the previous Elantra Touring. The GT now looks more like the sedan than the previous wagon-like Touring model did. The GT competes with other hatchbacks like the Mazda3, Ford Focus and Subaru Impreza.
The GT has rear seats that fold to create 51 cubic feet of cargo room. The cargo space is on the larger side compared with other hatchbacks: The Impreza is 52 cubic feet, Mazda3 is 42.8 cubic feet and the Focus is 45 cubic feet. The same 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine from the Elantra sedan is used with a choice of automatic or manual transmissions. Hyundai is shooting for a sportier driving experience than the sedan in the GT, so a stiffer suspension has unique shocks for improved body motion control. The optional Style Package gives the suspension sportier tuning for the package's 17-inch wheels. Drivers can choose from three steering modes: Comfort, Normal and Sport, which adjusts the power-steering assist for varying levels of steering-wheel tightness. Standard safety features include all-disc antilock brakes, side-impact airbags for the front seats, front and rear side curtain airbags. electronic stability system with traction control, tire pressure monitoring system.
subcompact. As we've come to expect from Chevrolet's RS badge, the car gets cosmetic updates and handling improvements. It should be a little quicker than the regular Sonic, which has the same engine, thanks to shorter gearing for its six-speed manual. Where the front-drive Sonic comes as a sedan or hatchback, the RS is hatch only. It drops the Sonic's circular fog lights for shapelier ones, while the quad headlights and scowling expression remain. The RS adds ground effects around the bumpers and side sills, plus unique 17-inch wheels, a spoiler and darker, painted side mirrors. The RS will be the only Sonic to have genuine leather seats. Larger side bolsters should hold you better around corners. Flat-bottomed steering wheels are becoming the rage among sporty cars, and the Sonic RS gets one that's leather-wrapped with a thicker rim. Aluminum pedals, unique interior trim and an RS stick-shift knob round out the changes.
Chevrolet says it took design inspiration for the headlights from the motorcycle world. The Sonic's hunkered-down, raked stance adds to its aggressive looks. Like the outside, the inside takes inspiration from motorcycles, Chevrolet says. The instrument cluster is one of the more identifiable products of that approach, attaching a digital LCD readout to an analog speedometer. Chevrolet's turbo 1.4-liter four-cylinder makes 138 hp and 148 pounds-feet of torque. Four-wheeldisc brakes should improve braking performance versus the Sonic's disc/drum setup. A stiffened suspension rides less than a half inch lower, but the RS offers neither a limited-slip differential nor a fully independent rear suspension. The hatchback sees added cargo room behind the rear seats. Interior features include power locks, air conditioning, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. Safety features include front/rear disc antilock brakes, 10 standard airbags, hill start assist, electronic stability control.
i Sport sedan in addition to the i Touring and i Grand Touring. The i Sport, i Touring and i Grand Touring add a USB port and a driver information system. The front bumper was smoothed last year, and although the smiling grille's detailing changed, its size remains the same. Most of the changes to the exterior and underbody were made to improve aerodynamics by 7 percent for both body styles. When equipped with the optional SkyActiv engine, the Mazda3 has a blue ring around each projector-beam headlight lens, extra badging and a blue engine cover under the hood. Exterior features include 16-inch steel wheels (16- or 17inch alloy wheels optional). Exterior options include fog lights, side mirrors with integrated turn signals, bi-xenon highintensity-discharge headlights, rear spoiler, power moonroof. Interior changes for 2012 included silver trim on the finer touch points, such as knobs and vent pulls. The gauge markings are backlit, day
or night. The dashboard LCDs are white, though the performance-oriented Mazdaspeed3 version features red gauge backlighting. The fabric seat upholstery on lower and higher trim levels has different patterns. Interior options include navigation system with a 5.8-inch touchscreen, push-button start With the addition of SkyActiv, the Mazda3 now offers three engines: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder base engine that produces 148 horsepower and teams with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission; SkyActiv 2.0-liter direct-injection four-cylinder produces 155 hp and teams with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic; or a 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 167 hp and works with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic. Safety features include antilock brakes, electronic stability system with traction control, front-seat side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags. Safety options include the blind spot warning system, adaptive headlights.

2013 FEATURE
DODGE DART
FORD C-MAX
VEHICLE OVERVIEW Dodge gets its first small sedan since the Neon, an underperformer whose tenure ended in 2005. A small four-door returns to the lineup this spring, and Dodge dusted off an old nameplate to christen it. The Dart is based on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, sold overseas by Dodge parent Fiat, and it looks to match the Hyundai Elantra and Ford Focus for style points. A slate of new engines features Fiat's MultiAir technology; among them will be a tiny turbocharged four-cylinder that gets around 40 mpg highway. The Dart also gets a fourwheel-independent suspension, not the segment norm. Trim levels are the SE, SXT, Rallye, Limited and R/T.
WEDNEsDay, OctObEr 17, 2012 | 9
VEHICLE OVERVIEW The C-Max Hybrid is more of a hatchback than a minivan: The second-row doors open conventionally, rather than slide open. Competitors include the Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight. A plug-in version of the C-Max Hybrid can be recharged overnight to increase the electric motor's ability to move the car gas-free. Dubbed the C-Max Energi, it offers more than 500 miles of driving range on a tank of gas and a full electric charge, Ford says. EXTERIOR The C-Max Hybrid carries upper and lower grille openings. The lower grille has six stacked bars, which, combined with its trapezoidal shape, gives it a similar look to the grilles on Aston Martin's supercars. The C-Max Hybrid offers active park assist, enabling the car to — in essence — parallel park itself. Multispoke wheels carry low-rolling-resistance tires.
EXTERIOR Elantra-like curves up front and a much smaller grille than the Dodge norm. The runaround taillights from Dodge's full-size Charger characterize the Dart's rear, but the whole of it wraps atop a curvier shape.
INTERIOR The five-seat interior has various displays that offer additional eco-friendly information, including fuel-efficient navigation routing, battery charge and gas mileage. Drivers can even see electrical demands from vehicle accessories — the radio, headlamps and air conditioning — that influence battery charge. Ford's new hands-free power liftgate lets you simply wave your foot underneath the rear bumper to automatically close or open the liftgate.
INTERIOR Inside, the Dart's wraparound dash borrows elements from the Charger, with gauges and a center display under the same hood. Higher trims have a stitched hood and LED wraparound lighting. An optional 7-inch configurable display sits between the gauges; it can show digital or simulated analog speed, as well as vehicle information, radio settings and more. Longer and wider than most segment rivals, the Dart boasts a lot of interior room — 97.2 cubic feet, beating the Focus, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Cruze and Elantra. Higher trims include dual-zone climate control, heated leather seats and a power driver's seat.
UNDER THE HOOD Combining an electric motor with a four-cylinder gasoline engine that runs on a more-efficient Atkinson cycle, the C-Max Hybrid will achieve better capabilities than Ford's existing Fusion Hybrid, Ford says, meaning more than 41 mpg in the city and the ability to drive on electric power alone at speeds higher than 47 mph. Power for the electric motor comes from a lithium-ion battery. Total output for the C-Max Hybrid is 188 horsepower. Like most hybrids, the C-Max has regenerative braking, wherein the battery recharges when you press the brakes. Up to a certain threshold, the friction brought on by recharging slows the car, with minimal usage of the actual brakes. Ford's Brake Coach feature helps drivers decelerate as much as they can within the battery-charge threshold, thus accruing the most recharging with the least wear on braking hardware.
UNDER THE HOOD A 2.0-liter four-cylinder is standard, with a turbo 1.4-liter four-cylinder optional. Both engines make 160 horsepower, but the smaller engine is equipped with Fiat's MultiAir valve system and makes 184 pounds-feet of torque, 39 more pounds-feet than the 2.0-liter. It teams with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, while the 2.0-liter gets a conventional six-speed auto. A sixspeed manual is also available with either motor. The Dart R/T, meanwhile, gets a 2.4-liter MultiAir four-cylinder that's good for 184 hp and 171 pounds-feet of torque; it works with a six-speed automatic or manual.
SAFETY The C-Max Hybrid features a standard electronic stability system and antilock brakes, along with seven airbags including one for the driver's knees.
SAFETY Ten airbags, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system are standard.

INTERIOR Interior dimensions are similar to the outgoing model's dimensions. The passenger volume is down 2 cubic feet, but the cargo volume is up 3 cubic feet behind the backseat and almost 1 cubic foot when the seats are folded. Ford's latest tech trick is an optional power liftgate that's activated by waving your foot under the rear bumper. The backseat has been updated to fold more easily, with one-touch collapsing head restraints and single-lever backrest release. The cabin quality has improved, with a soft-touch dashboard, deeper armrest padding and hidden fasteners in storage compartments and the like. Front sport seats are a new option, featuring more prominent bolsters, leather trim and contrast stitching. UNDER THE HOOD The Escape's standard engine is an upgraded version of the existing 2.5-liter four-cylinder, which is projected to generate 168 horsepower. The biggest news is the introduction of two optional EcoBoost turbocharged engines: a 173-hp 1.6-liter and a 237-hp 2.0-liter, both also four-cylinders. The V-6 will not be continued. Ford says the 2013 Escape will increase gas mileage by "up to" 5 mpg over the 2012 model with the smaller EcoBoost option. (EPA estimates aren't available as of this writing.) All the engines team with a six-speed automatic. Although it provides sequential manual shifting by means of a rocker switch on the gear selector, this isn't a dualclutch transmission of the type used in the Fiesta and Focus. It's a conventional design. Driveline choices are front- or all-wheel drive.

MAZDA CX-5
SUBARU CROSSTREK
VEHICLE OVERVIEW A replacement for the Tribute, the CX-5 slots at the bottom of Mazda's SUV lineup. With five seats and front- or all-wheel drive, it's one of the few small SUVs to offer a manual transmission. Mazda's SkyActiv four-cylinder delivers better gas mileage than competitors such as the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Chevrolet Equinox. Trim levels for the CX-5 are the Sport, Touring and Grand Touring.
VEHICLE OVERVIEW The Subaru XV Crosstrek is a beefed-up version of the Impreza hatchback. Subaru says the Crosstrek has the same ground clearance as the larger Outback wagon. It competes with small off-roaders like the Jeep Compass and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. The Crosstrek comes in Premium and Limited trims, both with a four-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel drive.
EXTERIOR The first vehicle to adopt Mazda's "Kodo" design language from 2010's Shinari concept, the CX-5 takes the brand's now-signature smiling grille and shapes it into a five-point scowl. Dual tailpipes, a steeply raked rear window and a prominent roof spoiler distinguish the rear. Seventeen-inch wheels are standard. Fog lights, adaptive xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights and 19-inch wheels are optional.
EXTERIOR An elevated ride height, black side and wheel arch cladding, spoiler and roof rails add to the Crosstrek's rugged look, as do its stylized 17-inch alloy wheels. Thanks to its raised suspension, the Crosstrek's ground clearance matches the Outback's 8.7 inches, beating the Impreza hatchback by more than 3 inches. That's better than the prior Impreza-based Outback Sport, which had less than an inch of additional clearance versus the Impreza.
INTERIOR The CX-5's simple dashboard has white backlit gauges and a vertical panel housing the center controls. The steering wheel has tilt and telescoping adjustments, as well as redundant audio controls. Heated leather seats, dualzone automatic climate control, a power driver's seat and three-stage heated seats are optional. The backseat folds with releases in the seatbacks and cargo area. An optional 40/20/40-split folding seat allows the center section to fold for narrow cargo with child-safety seats in the outboard seats. Cargo room behind the second row totals 34.1 cubic feet, with roughly 65 cubic feet of maximum space with the seats folded. Those are competitive figures, albeit short of the roomy CR-V and RAV4.
INTERIOR The Crosstrek shares the Impreza's dashboard and controls. Standard features include a telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, as well as various power accessories and Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming. Optional upgrades include heated leather seats, automatic climate control, a rear-seat armrest, a backup camera and HD radio. A power moonroof and a navigation system are standalone options on both trim levels. Fold the rear seats, and the Crosstrek has 52.4 cubic feet of cargo room, which is competitive with the Jeep and Mitsubishi.
UNDER THE HOOD The CX-5 is the second car to get Mazda's SkyActiv 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which also powers the Mazda3. In the CX-5 it makes 155 horsepower and 150 pounds-feet of torque, working through a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission in front-drive models. The all-wheel-drive CX-5 gets the automatic. EPA fuel-economy estimates range from 26/33 mpg city/highway with the stick shift to 25/30 mpg for the all-wheel-drive automatic. SAFETY Standard safety features include six airbags, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system. Adaptive xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights and a blind spot warning system are optional.

UNDER THE HOOD The sole powertrain is a 148-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder that works through a five-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission. Though mileage figures haven't been finalized, the Crosstrek's heavy-duty hardware is expected to cost the XV a few mpgs versus its Impreza sibling, which gets an EPAestimated 27/36 mpg city/highway with the CVT. A standard eco gauge should help improve gas mileage; it shows the driver when the vehicle is being driven most efficiently. All-wheel drive is standard. Stick-shift Crosstreks get a mechanical split between the front and rear wheels, while automatics have an electronic coupling that can send up to 100 percent of all power to one axle or the other. SAFETY An electronic stability system and all-disc antilock brakes are standard, with larger front discs than the base Impreza. Seven airbags are also standard.
2013 FEATURE
FORD FUSION
VEHICLE OVERVIEW Ford redesigned the Fusion for 2013 as a global car headed for international markets as the Mondeo. It's a different tack from the prior Fusion, which was distinct from its international counterpart. Relative to its predecessor, the Fusion Hybrid sees improvements of 15 and 22 percent to city and highway gas mileage, respectively. Competitors include hybrid versions of the Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima, as well as the diesel-powered Volkswagen Passat TDI. Ford will also offer a plug-in version called the Fusion Energi. EXTERIOR Design cues mirror the Evos Concept from the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, with thin headlamps that sweep clear toward the front fenders and a low, forward grille. The belt line stays visually flat in contrast to the rising lines on most sedans. The bumper runs flush with the trunk lid, with integrated tailpipes beneath. INTERIOR The Fusion adopts MyFord Touch with a few more physical keys along with detents to help drivers find buttons easier. Thinner seats free up rear legroom, and Ford says it moved the dash closer to the windshield to open up visual space. Three-spoke steering wheel stacks audio controls under five-way directional keys, which control LCD menus that flank the speedometer. Like most hybrids, the Fusion Hybrid's battery pack sacrifices some trunk room versus the non-hybrid Fusion. UNDER THE HOOD The Fusion Hybrid teams a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that runs on a more efficient Atkinson cycle with an electric motor, for 185 total horsepower. A lithium-ion battery powers the motor, which allows the Fusion Hybrid to cruise on electric power at speeds up to 62 mph. Ford maintains performance will be similar between the 2.0-liter Fusion Hybrid and its 2.5-liter predecessor, with overall gas mileage at 47/44 mpg city/highway. Ford redesigned the multilink rear suspension and improved its hood sealing, to help quiet the cabin. Hybrid and Energi models have active noise cancellation, something the non-hybrid Fusion goes without. SAFETY Front, side, dual knee airbags are standard. High-tech safety features with lane departure warning and mitigation systems, drowsy-driver detection and adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning, blind spot warning system, crosstraffic alert and Ford's automatic parking system.
