What to expect when you’re expecting a wedding

Leather or Plush, Rolling in Style for 50 Years Story and Photos By Taima Kern/Action Publications You’ve got your dress, your venue, your flowers, your cake, the rings, and you’re sure you’ve forgotten something.

How are you and your bridal party getting from place to place?

Though Chinese fire drills are an entertaining way to bother other drivers, maybe the answer you’re looking for comes more in the world of chartered services. “It’s been fifty years, and our wheels are still turning,” smiles Lois Nichols, the owner of Nichols Five Star Charters. Nichol’s Five Star Charters is a familyowned charter service, originally based in Eden, but now working out of Fond du

lac. Run by Lois Nichols and her daughter Pam, Nichols’ has several different options for bus rental in the local, state, and even nation-wide area. Nichols can service all parts of your wedding ceremonies, including the bachelor/stag and bachelorette parties, transport to and between the wedding and reception, and even a shuttle service to ferry guests from the reception venue to the hotel. It is suggested that you contact Nichols six months in advance of the wedding, to make sure that there will be a bus available on your date, as well as for the hours that it is required, also allowing time to make an appointment with Lois or Pam, and, as Lois says, “meet your bus in person,” to be sure that it is what you want.

Lois advises brides to organize and plan ahead, so your day rides smooth. Check in a week before the wedding, and keep them involved in your plans in case of changes. “We had a wedding once where they changed the pick-up point but forgot to call us, so they were waiting for an hour at the wrong location,” remembers Lois.

Options: Nichols offers a number of vehicular options through their service including: - The Luxury 57-passenger Coach Bus, with Wifi and 110 outlets, restrooms, AC, a PA system and video equipment, reclining seats, overhead and undercarriage stor-

What to expect when you’re expecting a wedding

Bright and Beautiful , From corsages to centerpieces Story and Photos By Taima Kern/Action Publications

Haentze Floral has been on the map for four, going on five generations, since the mid1800s, and they continue to be a staple of all things green and flowery in Fond du Lac. A full-service all-seasons garden center, it offers many of its services for weddings. Offering fresh flowers, rentals on items such as candelabras, wicker baskets, and archways, set up and tear-down, delivery, and plant rental for large foliage plants at the church or reception, they are a leader in the industry. In an age where more brides are tending towards putting their weddings together by themselves in a pocketbook-friendly manner, Haentze would like to remind brides that their services can be chartered individually.

“We aren’t afraid to work with do-it-yourself brides,” reassures Jeff, the nephew of present owner Tony, and fifth generation. “We would love to be part of your wedding in any function, even if it’s just bouquets and corsages.” Jeff guarantees good flowers and good service, personally inspects all flowers that come in to ensure their quality, as well as passing the savings he receives on flowers onto the brides.

Trending in 2012: The eggplant/dark purple trend that began to grow this spring in wedding colors has hung in here and continued into the fall, though at Haentze, requests continue to land all across

the board, with a slight spike in the larger, fuller, garden roses, as well as sunflowers for the fall season. “These days, flowers don’t really go out of season. If a bride wants tulips in the middle of a late fall wedding, they can be ordered in from Holland. They may be a bit more expensive than they would be when they’re in season around here, but it’s still do-able,” Jeff points out. This leads to brides having a much larger selection to pick from.

How to get started: Flowers should be chosen after wedding colors are set and preferably after bridesmaids dresses have been selected, but other than that, there isn’t a lot of prep work. He also suggests that brides keep an open mind, since sometimes seeing the flowers in real life can alter their perception of them. You might hate roses, and then fall in love with a garden rose, because you had only been considering wine-red roses.

Depending on the complexity of the flower order, 3-6 months is the safe zone for ordering time, but if what the bride is after is something that’s in stock, it could be pulled off in as little as a few days. “I’ve had brides come in on Tuesday for a Saturday wedding, and we’ve taken care of them,” remarks Jeff, but he reminds brides that it will limit their selection.

Sweet and Tantalizing doesn’t always mean cake… Story and Photos By Taima Kern/Action Publications With an aroma that can lure people in right off the street, and a level of presentation that can drive you mad with desire at the very sight of it, there’s magic mixed in with the delights at Bryanna’s Bakery. Bryanna’s Bakery is a full-service bakery, and specializes in many different wedding cake and wedding cupcake designs for brides and grooms with all tastes. They have a wide variety of fillings available: vanilla, lemon, passion fruit, chocolate or white chocolate mousse, and fresh strawberries are some of their highlighted best-sellers. to work with brides and grooms for cake tastings, designs, and deliveries; Jose is willing to work with any bride and any idea.’

An alternative for the edgy bride: Who says you can’t take the cupcake approach a step further? A unique idea for fall weddings is to diverge from the traditional wedding cake, and instead, consider individual desserts, such as those crafted at Bryanna’s Bakery by Jose. It is always possible to get a small wedding cake to cut for ceremony’s sake, with a top to be frozen and saved, regardless of what everyone else at the wedding is having. Bryanna’s offers a number of individual serving pastries and delights, including their layer tiramisu, cheesecake, and a number of other signature sweets that shout irresistibly.

What to expect when you’re expecting a wedding

I Now Pronounce You... Protected from Identity Theft

ARA Content News Service

After the “I do’s” are said, will you change your last name? Brides consider a host of factors when answering that question everything from how a name change might affect a woman’s sense of identity to how having the same last name can make a family feel more bonded.

name appears. Many of those documents and accounts will be of interest to identity thieves, including: - Social Security card

- Call credit card issuers regarding the name change after you’ve received your updated Social Security card and driver’s license. Some may be willing to conduct the change over the phone. Others will ask to see a copy of your marriage certificate. Be sure to find out if they can take a photocopy or if they require an original duplicate.

- Driver’s license - Passport

Our modern world has added a new element for brides to consider - the risk of identity theft.

- Bank account(s)

While there’s no one right or wrong answer to the question of whether you should change your name, it’s important to be aware of how the name change process can increase your risk of identity theft. Hopefully, as a single woman, you have already taken steps to protect against identity theft. These precautions will serve you well as you go through the name-changing process, which is a haven of opportunity for identity thieves.

- Health insurance cards

- Credit card(s) - Investment accounts - Gym club memberships - Vehicle registration and auto insurance

If you decide to change your name, you can take steps to help prevent identity theft, including:

You’ll be changing important documents, like your Social Security card and driver’s license, and sharing personal, identifying information with a host of organizations from credit card issuers to your bank. If you choose to take your spouse’s name, or to hyphenate your maiden last name with your new married last name, you’ll need to make changes anywhere your maiden

- Do as much of the legwork in person as possible. Take your marriage certificate to your local Social Security office and complete the change form there. Don’t fax or email it, even if a helpful agent agrees to accept it in this form. And never leave your marriage certificate with the agent.

- Consider asking the credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on your account for several months after you change your name. The alert will help you detect any attempts to fraudulently use your personal information.

Finally, if you’re thinking of keeping your maiden name to avoid the hassles of changing it, and as a way to deter identity theft, consider this: Keeping your maiden name may not necessarily be a cure-all for preventing identity theft. If you don’t use your “married name,” an enterprising identity thief just might. Since the name the fraud would occur under is different from the one you use, you might not become aware of the theft right away. Ultimately, when it comes to the question of whether to change your name, there’s no one right or wrong answer that suits everyone. However, the need to take steps to protect your identity is universal - regardless of what name you decide to use.

SPECIAL

And, for those who try to balance the desire to maintain their individual identity with showing solidarity for their mate by hyphenating, keep in mind that doing so puts your maiden name out there for everyone to see down the road when your own children need to use it as a security question answer.

- Consider using an identity theft detection, protection and resolution product like ProtectMyID. The service monitors your credit report on a daily basis to help you catch signs of identity theft quickly.

- Likewise, head into your local bank branch and fill out the necessary change paperwork in person.

Upscale or Casual It’s all up to you at Whispering Springs By Taima Kern/Action Publications Overlooking Fond du Lac, mixed amongst rolling hills and grand trees, Whispering Springs Golf Club’s year-round banquet facility offers over 3,500 square feet of space, with elegant architecture, large windows and a welcoming bar area, and can accommodate a plated dinner service of 250 guests.

just waiting to host your wedding.

Trepanier. “Anything goes.”

Whispering Springs provide in-house catering, as well as breathtaking sites for the ceremony itself, and offer levels of service that span from one end of the spectrum to the other.

Back in the 1930s, a 9-hole golf course was built and the name was Ledgeview. In the early 1990s, Bob Lohmann redesigned the golf course and the area became an 18-hole golf course, with the back nine being the original nine holes. Present owners Mark and Patty Trepanier purchased the property in 2008, and in 2009, a new clubhouse was built. Within that clubhouse is a fantastic banquet area,

Event planners Sara Trepanier and Mary Wolfe are ready to help you make your dreams come true, whether you want an upscale formal event, or something more casual.

The venue should be chosen at the same time that the date is set, as venues are often booked up to two years in advance. Whispering Springs suggests scheduling a year ahead of time is preferred, but the earlier you book, the better the odds you’ll get the day you need. That being said, there are sparse openings here and there between now and this time in 2013. “You’ll have to be flexible on your date,” Sara suggests. If you’re willing to shift it up or back a week or two, it will make matching a reservation at a church or other ceremony location, and the reservation at Whispering Springs, or another other reception venue. Remember, after the date is set, and the hall booked, things

“If you book the right venue and surround yourself with people who know what they’re doing, everything else will fall into place, the details will follow,” promises Sara. Whispering Springs has a list of their preferred vendors, people that they’ve worked closely with in the past, as well as experienced event planners. “We don’t just rent our space, we give our advice, conduct free wedding tastings, and ask the questions brides and grooms didn’t think of.”

Making things easier: Whispering Springs also strives to do away

with hidden charges, like a bartender’s fee, or a cake cutting fee. When the banquet hall is rented, everything is rolled into one price, and easy to understand, and it includes tax and gratuity. There’s no need to make it more difficult than it already may be. To charter their services, call 9218053 or visit their Web site: www. whisperingspringsgolf.com and fill out a banquet inquiry. From there, brides and grooms can answer some brief questions on the event, and the date requested, and you will be put in touch with either Sara or Mary, who will be able to guide you through the rest of the procedure.

everyone dances to something at some point,” remarks Keith. Record Entertainment also takes great care in making sure that they’re prepared to play the reception, with an in-depth questionnaire on their Web site for the interested bride, groom and bridal party. Located on their Web site: www. recordentertainment.com, under the “Pre Event Consultation Guide” tab, they ask every applicable question. Some of their questions include: - How would you like to be introduced as newlyweds? - What song would you like to march into for your Grand March? Time? - What song would you like us to play for the bride and groom?? - What song would you like us to play as the second song for the wedding party to change partners to. - If both sets of parents are alive and together, would you like to play a song for them? If so, what song? But other questions on the list vary from

the basic “must play” and “must avoid” song lists, such as “Is there anything that you have seen other DJ's do that you really DON'T like? This will help us provide the style of DJ you are looking for” or “How would you like your DJ to dress?” All in all, a wedding is your time to shine and your moment. If the bride and groom enjoy crazy, then go crazy. If a more calm, collected, regal gala setting is preferred, that is perfectly alright. “We’ve seen all kinds of things, especially with the grand march,” remembers Keith, “people riding shopping carts, grooms popping out of gunny sacks, some people have a lot of fun with it.”

What to expect when you’re expecting a wedding

Cost-control tips

a must for brides-maids-to-be ARA Content News Service

Standing up for your friend as her maid of honor or bridesmaid is a special experience you’ll both remember all your lives. Yet your happiness for your friend, and your joy at participating in her wedding, can be tempered by concerns about the costs associated with being a member of the wedding party. Just like the bride and groom, attendants often need to use credit to fund their wedding experience, including the cost of a dress, gift for the happy couple, the bachelorette party and perhaps traveling to the wedding location. Still, if you rely too much on credit, you could end up with debt - which is a lot worse than a

dress you’ll never wear again. Careful planning and an honest discussion with the bride and groom about cost control can help ensure no one overspends on the big day.

Before you agree: The first question you should ask yourself is: “Can I afford to be in this wedding?” If the person asking for your participation is your best friend in the world, and saying “no” will harm your relationship, you’ll have to find a way to fund your bridesmaid duties without breaking the bank. But if the invitation comes from a

friend you’re not particularly close to, it may be appropriate to decline, especially if the associated costs will be a financial hardship.

members valuable tools to help them monitor their credit for a monthly fee.

When it’s time to say “yes”:

When the answer has to be “yes,” your next move should be to assess your finances. How much cash can you reasonably set aside between now and the time the bills start to arrive? How much of your participation will need to be funded through credit?

Once you have an idea of how you can budget, it’s time to have a candid discussion with the bride and groom. Let them know what you’re comfortable with, and what will be beyond your budget. Determine what their expectations are for the costs you’ll bear, and what they’ll pay for.

If you know credit will be a big part of your wedding party budget, monitoring your credit for a few months may help you manage your finances. Membership in a product like CreditReport.com offers

If you find that your financial abilities and their expectations are too far apart, give them the opportunity to reconsider their invitation for you to be in the wedding.

Ironing out money matters at the beginning of the wedding planning process will help ensure you don’t have to distract the bride and groom with the discussion as their big day approaches - and their stress levels go up.

When you’re committed: Once you’ve said yes and agreed on expenses, it’s time to put your plan into action. Begin setting aside money right away, even if the wedding is a year away. The longer you have to save cash, the less you’ll need to rely on credit as the wedding approaches. Look for ways that you can cut expenses without impacting the wedding itself. For example, if the bridesmaid’s dress must come from a pricey boutique, perhaps you can find matching shoes for less at a different retail store. If you’ll be traveling to the wedding in another state or even another country - shop

for the best airline deal, and explore the possibility of using reward miles or hotel points to help defray your travel costs. Compromise with the bride: If she agrees to let you wear your favorite little black dress, rather than drop a few hundred on something new that you’ll never wear again, make it up to her by helping out in some other way. Perhaps you’re a skilled crafter who can make one-ofa-kind favors for the reception. Maybe your graphic design skills could help her save money on custom-designed invitations. Or perhaps you can use your flower-arranging skills to help her save money on centerpieces, boutonnieres and bouquets. With some advanced planning and loving honesty, you can help ensure your friend’s big day is as perfect as possible-and that the only thing you’re left with afterward are happy memories.
