Through the

brides eyes: The Halloween Wedding of Michael & Tracy Balistreri By Taima Kern | Action Reporter Media photos by Cathleen Warren, owner, Light Source Photography

o

Often, the best advice

comes from someone who has already been through what you’re trying to do. In this case, that means themed weddings, or, more specifically, a Halloween wedding. A Halloween wedding is an interesting way to take the traditional ceremony. It allows the bride and groom to dress up in their favorite costumes, and allows the guest to go wild in whatever theme they like.

On Friday, October 28, 2011, Fond du Lac Bears head coach Michael Balistreri married Tracy Conley, of Milwaukee, and they opted to tie the knot in a wild west fashion. However, that didn’t stop Captain Hook, Mr. Smee, Peter Pan, Belle, Beast, and a gaggle of gangsters and flappers from dropping in.

She would research, plot and plan whenever she got a chance. One thing that she did to make everything easier was to delegate to willing friends and family. “We made sure to designate jobs to people in our families, so we wouldn’t be Tracy and Mike’s ceremony was held at St. Rita’s Catholic so stressed the day of the wedding,” says Tracy. Best/Easiest part of planning a themed wedding:

“I wouldn’t say there is anything easy about planning a wedding, themed or not. The best part is seeing the amazement on everyone’s faces. Even now people still talk about what a fabulous night it was. That was the goal. We wanted a wedding that people would remember.”

Tracy chose a black and emerald green Victorian gown, along with a customized hairpiece, which she switched out for an oldwest hat.

<<< FEATURED BRIDE continued from page 5

it was the location where her parents were married back in the day. The couple also held on to the tradition of bridesmaids and groomsmen, but they clothed them a little different than the norm. The bridesmaids were in blue satin dresses that they discovered at a boutique. The saloon-style cut was perfect for Mike and Tracy’s wild west bridal party theme. The ushers were “bad cowboys,” inspired by the movie Tombstone, complete with red sashes made by Tracy’s aunt. Mike and the groomsmen were dressed in vintage style tuxedos, following the fashion statements of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday. “They spent months collecting hats and boots and holsters for their outfits.” Groomsmen included Fondy Bears players Ryan Blick, Robbie Coleman and Ted Thompson. At this point, tradition was put on hold for the remainder of the planning. Instead of the iconic white gown,

In place of a wedding cake, since neither the bride nor the groom were overly enthusiastic about cake, a traditional Italian dessert table was set up. The couple also skipped the garter and bouquet toss. “I always hated being dragged on the dance floor at wedding for this tradition, I didn’t want my guests to feel obligated to do so.”

Hardest/Most trying part of planning a themed wedding:

“The hardest part was getting people on board with what we were doing. I think a lot of people thought we weren’t taking it seriously because we wanted to wear costumes. That was the only part that was challenging for us.”

If there was one piece of advice that you wish someone had given you that you could give to a bride and groom considering a themed wedding, what would it be?:

A Successful Wedding

In the end, approximately 300 guests turned up, with 95 percent of them in costume. “My father was Captain Hook, and my nephew, Adam, dressed at Peter Pan. My oldest niece, Jenna, was Wendy, my niece Maya was Tinker Bell, and the baby Amira was Princess Tiger Lily. Mikey’s nephew Chase was a cowboy for the guy’s before pictures and then Captain Jack Sparrow for the reception, his niece Isabella was also Belle,” remembers Tracy. Mary Poppins also popped in, and rumor has it the Mad Hatter was there too… ●

“Do it! The hard part of planning any wedding is that everyone wants to give their opinion of what your day should be. It’s hard to not give in and do it the way your family or friends might want you to do it. You don’t want to disappoint anyone. But, you will definitely regret not going for what you want.”

by Joel was opened in Theresa in 2002, but confectioner Joel Bernhard had been interested in the making of chocolate and sweets for many years. It all started in a classroom at MPTC when his class had to make chocolate truffles, and from there, it blossomed into the wall-to-wall candy store that now stands on the corner of N. Milwaukee (Hwy 175) and E. Rock River Streets. As the name would lead you to believe, there are items within these walls for any and every occasion, including weddings. With over 1500 molds that would meet almost any wedding theme, tiny customizable boxes containing two decadent truffles as favors, enough candy to fill a candy buffet , double-heart chocolates that can be engraved with the couples’ names, and a price tag that is on-par with

regular cake and cupcake weddings, a candy wedding might be just the thing for you. “About three of four years ago, when the economy was better, we would do 60 to 65 weddings year,” says Joel. “Lately it’s dropped to 20-25 a year, but it’s starting to pick up again.” Even though many people favor the personalized boxes with a pair of truffles, Joel says that believe it or not, a lot of brides

Pretty much anything in the shop is fair game for a wedding presentation of some kind or another, be it favors for the guests, or in place of a cake/cupcakes. There are little favor bags of wrapped chocolates in the shape of autumn leaves, with ribbons that can have the name of the bride and groom and the wedding date, a variety of taffy, toffees, sixlets, jelly beans, gummy bears, and a ton of other things that you might not expect. The theme of recent years’ weddings has been tending towards “unique” and

what could be more unexpected for your guests than a candy buffet? And Joel adds that the customers shouldn’t be concerned about a candy feast like this breaking the budget. “We can work with the bride and the groom to find something that fits their budget,” says Joel. Confections for Any Occasion by Joel is located at 101 N. Milwaukee St. (Hwy 175) in Theresa, about a half hour south of Fond du Lac. They can be reached at 488-9269 during business hours. and grooms order chocolates made in the cow and tractor-shaped molds. Those forms are just the tip of the ice berg, and just a short stroll through the shop reveals owls, tiny wedding cakes, fish, sports balls, and so much more. Joel says that he’s even had newlyweds who return from a destination wedding and want to have little Eifel Tower or Empire State Building-shaped chocolates. “If we don’t have the mold you’re looking for, we can always see if we can order it,” adds Joel.

Make history with local historic venue Get married at the Galloway House & Village’s chapel By Taima Kern | Action Reporter Media

With all of the original and unique

venues in Fond du Lac, there is one that is often overlooked. Hidden within the Historical Galloway House & Village is the former Eldorado Congregational Chapel, which stands ready to accommodate small, cozy wedding ceremonies within its centenarian walls. The chapel was originally built in 1891 and was the home of a congregation in Eldorado. The last service held there was in 1968 before it was dismantled and relocated in 1969 to the Galloway house grounds, when it was donated to the Fond du Lac County Historical Society. It was taken apart into five pieces, the four walls and the roof, and transported on

flatbed trailers to its new home on the south-east side of Fond du Lac, where it was reassembled, plastered and painted. Along with it came some other artifacts, including the altar, a pump organ and several original chairs.

We’re Playing Your Song! These Bands are Members of the Fond du Lac Area Musicians Association!

These days it is furnished with the original items as well as a Strassino piano manufactured in Fond du Lac and given as a gift to the chapel in honor of its relocation, a baptismal font donated by Immanuel Trinity Lutheran Church, and a number of pews from other area churches. Trends in the wedding industry have been tending towards the key words “unique” and “retro” and there isn’t a better location to knit those two terms together.

Now picture your big day there: walking up to the chapel through the sun-dappled brick paths of the town, saying your vows surrounded by your closest family and friends, making history in history, and at the moment you say “I do,” a signal is given and all of the bells on the grounds peal in celebration of the union. The signal-giver, event coordinator and liaison to the historical society is Deanna Jacobs, who has been working with weddings for over 20 years, and recently chose to lend her talents to the historical grounds at the Galloway village. “I’m the gobetween,” says Deanna. “I can answer any question and I maintain the schedule of weddings and dates.” Deanna knows what can and can’t be re-arranged, when the chapel is available, and has walked many a wedding through these doors.

Deanna Jacobs There are a number of reasons why the Galloway village is a perfect spot for a small wedding, including the availability of the grounds to the wedding guests, the indoor and outdoor options, the availability for both rehearsals and the ceremonies, and even that the funds used to secure and rent the chapel are considered a tax-deductible donation to the historical society. “The moment you know [you want the grounds for your ceremony] is the best time to call and put down a deposit,” adds Deanna. She is already taking bookings for 2014, and though they aren’t packed, it is best to call early, because reservations are taken on a first-come basis. “With respect to the artifacts, almost any rearrangement of the room is available,” says Deanna. Deanna also adds that though the ground isn’t consecrated, as would be required in a full catholic mass marriage, ceremonies of any religion may be carried out, and if couples are having problems finding an officiant, Deanna knows a list of those too, and is willing to help. To contact Deanna, interested couples can either call the Fond du Lac Historical Society, or reach out to Deanna directly by phone at 382-9833 or by email at deanna.jacobs@yahoo.com. ●

bridal shop in the Fond du Lac area, and it’s offering a unique stock of all things bridal, as a one-stop-shop for the bride on the go. Julie Wiley opened Second I Do’s LLC, located at N7640 Co. Rd. WH in Fond du Lac (Peebles) only a few months ago with one goal in mind: to cater to those women of today who are unable to devote exorbitant amounts of time to wedding shopping. This includes encore brides, brides who are trying to blend families, and the working bride, really anyone who doesn’t want to drive all over the green earth looking for every element of the wedding. A number of misconceptions have already arisen about the new shop, including theories that it is a second-hand shop, which it is not. All of the dresses are brand new, and many are one-of-a-kind. There are usually around 200 different dresses in stock, in sizes running from 0 to 22, with styles spanning the generations from retro to boho (hippie) to contemporary. Many are also offwhite or include colored accents for the encore bride. The best part is that there is a surprise on every price tag, as Second I Do’s boasts very competitive prices. Julie enjoys keeping things interesting, and spends a great deal of time looking for the unique dresses that she keeps stocked, but the store is so much more

EDEN CATERING than just dresses. They also offer a range of authentic Coach-brand handbags, scarves, bachelorette party favors, hair accessories and jewelry, wedding flutes, shoes, unique men’s gifts and so much more. In addition to the variety, Julie also takes pride in the customizability of many of her products. Many of the gifts and favors that are available at Second I Do’s can be personalized to match the customers’ needs, and all of the printing is done in-house on a sublimination ink and heat press system, a process that has been around since the 1950s, but isn’t widely practiced. They can print names, phrases, and even photos on koozies, photo frames, flutes and so much more. Their turnaround time can be as short as three days, and there is no minimum order or set-up fee. Be sure to stop in and chat with Julie to see if customization is available to fit your desires. It is with the custom-printed items and a number of the photo frames and other bits and pieces that you will find at Second I Do’s that Julie drives home one of the ideas

that makes her shop unique. She tries to be very conscientious of blended families, something that is a lot more common a practice these days. She wants to keep it simple for a mom who is trying to get married, and she wants to offer items that honor not just the couple, but the merging of their families, whatever their situation might be. Julie worked at Giddings & Lewis for 28 years, and then after a brief stint in Chicago, she returned to the Fond du Lac area, where she opened Second I Do’s as well as returning to Giddings & Lewis. In addition to the hours that Julie puts in at Second I Do’s, you’ll also come across store manager Kelsey Rickerman, sales assistant Kalila Master, as well as Julie’s niece and graphics wizard Katie Sternitzky.
